I don't recall everything about this episode back in the day. (I do remember when Jenny told Tobor he couldn't smoke in the theater, however.)
But this is the only episode I can recall when the Chief made some tough remarks and acted like a real detective. I like the contrast between that and his usual bumbling persona.

I used to like buying a Mountain Dew and a small bag of barbecue potato chips coming home from school, sitting down in front of our portable TV in the kitchen and watching the after school cartoons. I watched these Eighth Man cartoons along with those pseudo-animated Marvel cartoons with Captain America and Incredible Hulk. Sugar and after school go together like peas and carrots and diabetes.

This was my favorite show when I was just 4 years old. I'm 61 now. Wow. I never got to see many of these because my two older sisters always got to watch "Leave it Beaver" instead. It seems as though the show as on around 5:30pm or 6pm daily in St. Louis back in the early '60s.

I had no idea 8-Man fought against evil clowns as well...

I wonder if they took out the scene where the Clown crushes that cigarette out on the Doll Maker's hand, not exactly something you'd see on American TV.

Using a cigarette as a power-up is so strange and contrived -- I have to wonder why they did it. My guess is that smoking was such a significant part of the archetype of heroic characters they felt it should even apply to their robot.

+James Firmiss (IznbranahlGoose) The AMA used to tell you it was healthy to smoke. It was rooted into the culture. They had candy cigs and bubble gum cigs for kids. This is a totally different time. I think it was just part of the culture and was seen as a good thing. It's because of that culture that today cigarettes are viewed as the "great evil" it's from 1 extreme to the other.

Shame that these days, you have a cartoon hero smoking, all hell will break loose as the parents and politicians will start complaining.

Bear in mind, in those days, everyone in Japan smoked!
This series was never intended for American distribution.
