    My uncle Joe. Even though he lived in the states for most of his life I did get to see him with my dad once in London. Brilliant. Made this track his own. My dad said when Joe released it, Paul McCartney and John Lennon wrote a letter to him saying he did a better job than the Beatles did.

      stefan cocker, that is true plus they put a full page thank you to Joe about this performance. Ringo sang it on the Sgt Pepper's album but nothing like Joe did. Joe's version was full of soul. Leon did the arrangements for this tour. I got to see them at their first show in Detroit. They brought down the house. Literally, they almost brought down the balcony.

      @@chlynn13b92 WOW thank you so much for that info. Did not know that. Brilliant to find out any fans memories about him. It keeps him remembered, treasured and loved. One story I've got. My dad was driving me home from university via Sheffield. As we got into the steel city it was snowing like Yorkshire can. Dads car broke down. As we are making our way on foot to my nan's house. We passed where Joe grew up. For whatever funny reason, bare in mind Joe probably hadn't lived there for some 50 some years. My dad started to pelt it with snowballs and I joined in. As we ran away laughing. Asked my dad what was all that about. He said it reminded him when he was young growing up with Joe and doing that as they did when they were kids 😊

      Billy the dog - Haven't you ever noticed when people sing in English, you can hardly ever hear their usual accent? Sometimes a little bit comes through, but the majority of time everyone sounds American. I actually looked this up once and the explanation involved using American vowel sounds and rhoticity which is pronunciation of Rs differently than in England where Rs are often dropped. The article I read also talked about singers trying to imitate original songs, but that doesn't make sense to me because then US artists would be sounding like Brits if that's where the song originated. The other explanation is that regional dialects get lost because intonation is superseded by melody, vowel length by duration of eac note and vocal cadences by a song's rhythm which makes the most sense to me. Not exactly a fun fact, but I always wondered why someone like Adele loses her native accent when singing or Keith Urban sounds country and not like Australian or New Zealander when he sings for example.

    Oh India, I'm so glad you finally got to hear the great Joe Cocker. I'm also sorry no one turned you on to him sooner.
    I remember when my son was young and in love with Guns and Rose's and thought no one could compare, I was there to play him Tin Lizzie, Deep Purple and Led Zep. I couldn't believe he had not heard Led Zeppelin. I was also able to play lots of varied kinds of acts from the 60's and 70's that he didn't know existed.
    The last time we talked music, he said he now owns more recordings than me and they are not just head banging stuff.
    Enjoy.

No serious rock fans ever thought of the original version of this song as anything more than another one of McCartney's silly little ditty's, which he would sometimes give the lead vocal to Ringo for, because... well, why the hell not ? To most rock fans, myself absolutely included, Cocker's arrangement and gut wrenching performance turned a goofy little McCartney throwaway or space filler, into a classic, powerful rock anthem, with all the energy, soul, and passion one could ask for. There is nothing PRETENTIOUS about that, my sad brother. You've witnessed one of the greatest live vocal performces in rock history... and couldn't even hear it. Pity.

Russell was recruited as the tour's musical director. A gifted musician, songwriter, and producer, Russell quickly assembled a band that included a stellar roster of musicians, including Chris Stainton (Keyboards) from the Grease Band, several alumni of Delaney & Bonnie's band (Claudia Linear and Rita Coolidge backup singers, future Derek and the Dominoes Carl Radle (Bass) & Jim Gordon (drums), Taj Mahal's drummer Chuck Blackwell, and the future horn section for the Rolling Stones, Bobby Keys, and Jim Price. I love Joe Cocker! Yes it was a Beatles tune...until the moment Joe did THAT! And the way the music would enter his body, he truly was an instrument to the moment. Thanks for sharing. And, I'm glad you could experience that.

      Daniel Bruns all true. It's not often a cover adds to or some people might say is better than the original. It's was even said by Bob Dylan that Jimi Jendrix made "All along the Watch Tower" his own. But these examples are pretty rare.

      Leon Russel was the guy in the top hat playing the Les Paul. He was the musical director for that tour. Between the cost of paying the band (four drummers, really?) and the cost of producing the movie, he returned home after the tour having to ride couches at friends or at his parents for a year so.

    • @chlynn13b92
      @chlynn13b92 5 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      @@Just-a-Guy1 No, not Leon. Joe was the one under contract to do this tour. He didn't want to tour and was going to be banned from the US if he didn't. Not to mention probably having all kinds of lawsuits thrown at him, from the promoters. He asked Leon to help him and he put the band and choir together basically and also arranged all of the music. They all did this without being paid. But the expenses were deducted out of Joe's money. But the movie and album made money so he got the royalties from that. It was said that after this show (which I saw live) Joe could have done concerts for over $50K which would have made him a top draw. There are lots of articles on this online.

    I know that Ringo, the Beatles drummer, released it after this version and I love that one too. the lyrics get me emotional, miss my old friends and still get by w/help from my newer ones, he also does "she came in through the bathroom window"
    the guy in the blue top hat is Leon Russel, another one you should look in to, Tightwire is one of his best songs. I am so glad I was a teenager during those times. so glad to have lived then. keep doing what you do India, I love the blasts from my past and today's youth needs the exposure/education these artists gave the world
