    Poor white men; they have to actually compete with only major advantage instead of automatic and unquestioned dominion. My thoughts and prayers are with them. ❤️

    for the age issue, i feel like he’s trying to co-opt an actual industry issue where (mostly minority) creators (in writing, animation, comics, etc) are hired more frequently because they’re less experienced and easier to exploit for overwork and underpay. that is its own issue and not the same as “young people have it easier getting into the industry” when “young” just means “cheap easy labor” to many of those hiring.

    That slow laugh was hilarious 😂 Honestly though I wouldn’t be surprised if people like James Patterson looked up the stats and said “75 or 85%? That’s not enough!” 🙄 It reminds me of this study where men and women were talking or even being in the same room. When it was 95% men and 5% women the men thought it was equal. Then, I think it was 40% women and 60% men the men thought women were dominating. “When you’re accustomed to privilege, equality feels like oppression.”

    Story time. When I worked with B&N James Patterson had his own display. It was not an end cap either. It was a whole bookcase next to the new releases so his books could be faced out. So, yes, his publisher/he paid for that but he would come in to the store on occasion and check it out! So even though his books weren’t for our area’s customer base it always had to be filled in and looking neat because all displays had to look nice but he would come in and admire? It. Now, fun part if you went up to him and asked if he was James Patterson he would always say no. Even if you were a fan.
    Also, he was a successful advertising executive before retiring and devoting his time to writing. He has always had the money and time and resources. Like ummmm, no.

    • @anne-marie339
      @anne-marie339 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Most Chapters and Indigos also have full bookshelves or bookcases dedicated to his works too :/ (Thankfully not always next to the new releases)

    • @MarjorieQuinn
      @MarjorieQuinn 2 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      @@anne-marie339 yes, true because his publisher pays for that Real estate in the book store. It was just funny that he would come into our store, stand in front of it and scrutinize the display. But he was not James Patterson if you asked.

    I’m not sure how a person can go from “Woody Allen (a person with a long history of scandals and problematic accusations) didn’t get to publish his memoir with one company” to “must be racism”. Of all the possible reasons, racism wouldn’t even be in my top 50.

    James Patterson doesn't even write his own books, he has a lot of nerve😒 His books take up 2 whole sections of the Fiction area in the library that I work in. How I wish we could slim it down alot!😖

    As someone with white 70+ family members and in-laws I can say there is a very irrational and ridiculous fear of "what will happen to white men" in the future. 🤦🏻‍♀️ Hopefully for everyone else they will step the F out the way and shut up in the room already.

  • @WildeBookGarden
    @WildeBookGarden 2 ปีที่แล้ว +25

    YES, exactly what Alyssa Cole said. This is ridiculous but it's also frightening because this is the attitude that feeds into so much violence - it's not "just" about publishing (although who gets opportunities to tell stories is also hugely important by itself!)

    This is why some authors should be seen and not heard and I totally agree with what Alyssa Cole said. My mom said the books he co-writes he doesn't actually write them he just puts his name on it, she says she can tell because she's read a lot of his books before so she can tell the difference.

    Being a middle aged white woman, I agree that white men have never and probably will never be discriminated against in almost any industry, especially in the arts. James needs to shut his mouth and just retire into obscurity. Let the authors who have "co-written" with him go on to do their own books. Some of them had unique voices instead of being clones of him. I hope to see them shine someday on their own.
    An author you didn't list that is a really good read is Regine Abel. She writes science fiction romance.

      @UCSNjo7QNLWH3CC1mQ8nBulA Ironic? It shouldn't be but I understand why it would be unusual. Jess' video above put the situation into a succinct summary in a way that made sense to me. I appreciate her willingness to talk about these issues and link to others who also discuss these things.

      Agree. And what’s weird is that only recently has the publishing industry actually started lifting up other voices, and he clearly feels threatened by this. Very ignorant of him to not understand the hardships minorities have faced to get their stories heard. History is written by the winners, and he should know this.

    I hate that "happened to be black." It feels like it's implying that blackness isn't allowed to be a significant, important aspect of a person or character. It feels like something those "I don't see color" people would say, like "I'm gonna write a character where their race is irrelevant and then toss in a throwaway line about them being black to pretend I'm Not RacistTM"

    Also just read Chef's Kiss by TJ Alexander - super cute slow burn romance with a bi and nonbinary couple (by a nonbinary author).
    Currently reading The Strangers by Katherena Vermette - a really great novel following the women of the Stranger family. It's by a Métis author and I recommend checking the content warnings for those interested.

    I must say, I have never liked J.P anyway, and from what I heard, he isn't a very nice guy at all and can be a bit of a bully when he wants something done. There has been loads of questions on how he treats his own ''staff'' (shadow writers). Not much came from it, but it is just rumours and anything else. Sometimes he has a habit of taking credit from someone else, steals ideas and gets other people to write it and even has an army of paid buyers at the ready. His sales, his information come from some group he has hired. He has bought his way to the top. The only books of his was good is Maximum ride series, but a couple of latest books of his was bad and still outpreformed somehow and made top lists. And.....there was one recently where he won 'best book award' for something that didn't come out yet. There is a lot going on here.

    I am not sure what is going on here, it feels like someone told him to say all this for a distraction. I know in my library, I have TWO bookshelves that is entirely dedicated to him, nobody else. Mr 4 books a month thanks for the army of Shadow Writers.....yeah, his books are terrible and sometimes his own publishers pull him up on it. But yeah, I am not sure why he would say that, as there are loads of adult males in that industry. I guess he had a falling out with them or something. But yeah, he is everywhere, I book in Waterstones, they have an ENTIRE SECTION with his name only. He has a HUGE number of works everywhere. So far, he has 400 million books to his name in total spanning 30 years. He holds the world record for most books written and sold. He alone is single handly keeping the industry going, while most of it has shut down.

    Okay so I did not know the full context of the story until. I only heard of the headlines on the internet so I only heard that he thought that white men were being discriminated against that's it. And I'm like okay that's his opinion as it pertains from his point of view it's lame but who cares. But knowing the full context that he felt that about a Woody Allen memoir. WOODY ALLEN, for him to think Woody Allen, a guy who has allegedly sexually abused his daughter and who went on to marry his other daughter (and I'm not getting into the debate of whether it's okay to court your adoptive daughter I'm not getting into that debate I'm not going to get it into the semantics of she's not blood related to him so it's okay no it's f***** up. He abused his daughter and he went on to groom and marry his other daughter.) So we not just got the racism, we got rich and just the warping of moral gymnastics here wrapped in the statement of "well Woody Allen's memoir wasn't published so I think that's racist." James Patterson Does not understand the fact that this pedophile this groomer does not need any positive attention he needs to be at the very least wiped out into obscurity at the very least because apparently he's never going to face Justice for his actions, for the abuse he caused his two daughters whether his other daughter that he's currently married to admits to it or not she was groomed by her dad.

    I've only ever read two books by James Patterson (one was mainly just to get inspiration for my own stories) and had to DNF both of them. This is just wild, outrageous and disgusting. The fact that he can say that with how things are going in right now is just...wow.
    Some book recs: Blood Heir by Amélie Wen Zhao, The Last Namsara by Kristen Ciccarelli, Iron Widow by Xiran Jay Zhao, With the Fire on High by Elizabeth Acevado, Gilded Ones & Merciless Ones by Namina Forna and Pride by Ibi Zoboi

    I honestly did my best not to drown myself in the damn bath when this popped up on my screen as I was reading my screen. Honestly, I literally so sick of this sort of nonsense. Honestly. How can a white man for whom the industry is literally catered, be oppressed? It is so easy for white writers to get into this industry. The only reason I can think of older white men not breaking through would be because the books they write are shit. Like full-blown, steam-curling-off-the-pile dollop of shit shit. But hey ho, that has not stopped publishers from publishing trash of that sort. As a writer, I am aware of the advantages I would have that most writers of colour don’t have and who actually deserve the opportunities to break into the industry, just as any other writer of worth deserves. It is grossly unfair to writers of colour and insulting to writer who have never had the opportunity to receive the attention they deserve. Fuck James Patterson. Fuck his brand.
    Fuck his books. I shall now get myself into the sun. Hope you’re doing well though Jess!! Lots of love from Scotland

    I've never read one of Patterson's books, but I have bought them as gifts for my mom since she enjoys them. I did notice that most of them had a coauthor. I always wondered how much he wrote and how much the coauthor wrote.
    But yeah, he is an idiot and a racist. Most of the people published in the West are white men. And a publisher deciding not to publish a book is not someone trying to shut down free speech. Publishers also have free speech rights too.
    For recs, Iron Widow and Zachary Ying by Xiran Jay Zhao, the Peasprout Chen series by Henry Lien, the Rick Riordan Presents imprint (I've read the first Aru Shah book by Roshani Chokshi, and the first Tristan Strong book by Kwame Mbalia; both were so good), and Honourbound by Rachel Harrison.

    I know that most libraries have workshops for older people about using computers or devices to read ebooks. Maybe someone should do a workshop about publishing indie books so that these poor old white men can start their writing journey without the discrimination they face in the industry. Sarcasm aside, I see Patterson's books in German grocery stores so I have no idea what he's talking about :')
