    Excellent filter design and I can't believe people are whingeing about the look of it since it is a totally functional, easy to clean solution to many water quality issues - obviously not one for a 'show tank' but for breeding set ups it is really really good.
    Nice one.

    Hi Mark,. This is a great little filter. It will definitely do the filtration needed. If one can not find pumice another great filter media will be lava rock. That will also work nicely. I would also think if you put some Kaldness K1 media in there to create a moving bed filter for the tank. Great video. I will definitely try some of them.👍👍👍👍😀👍

      @MarksShrimpTanks  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes you can use this for fish, this size holds a good 2-3 liters of material which I would imagine would be good in tanks upto 100 liter plus , for pigger tanks just add more bio media and a bigger container :)

    Thanks for sharing, Mark! Amazing diy! I have a question for you. I have 24 tanks in my garage. All of them are 30x35x30cm and I use two air pumps to power my sponge filters. One of the pumps makes 30l/min and the other makes 65l/min in a total of 95l/min. My question is do you think it would be possible to power 24 filters with these two air pumps, I mean, without using single powerheads in each tanks? If you think it's possible, how do you suggest it to be done? Thanks in advance and please keep up with your amazing work ;)

    • @MarksShrimpTanks
      @MarksShrimpTanks  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      You only need 1liter per tank per minute so you are way way over powered, I would use the biggest one and keep the other as a back up.

    • @RicardoMonginho
      @RicardoMonginho 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Marks Shrimp Tanks you are absolutely right. The 65l/m pump is more than enough. But I'm still thinking if it would be possible to use the air pump to power something like those diy filters you focused in this video. It would be a great help if it was possible. I always feel like my sponge filters could use some help like the ones you put inside the botles and small ikea boxes... If you think that would be possible please tell me how. Thanks :)

    • @MarksShrimpTanks
      @MarksShrimpTanks  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      oh yeah you could add a uplift tube to the filter you see in this video and run it on air for sure, th eonly reason I dont use air is because my pump had broken twice now and I dont have a backup but you do so use what you have :)

    Hello Mark!
    I love this ideae! Smart, effective, no fuzz and specials, just plain smartness!
    I have an ideae I want to test on you.
    On the inside of the filter I thinking of using the pipe (clear pipe) and the right angel and connect 2" (5cm) of the pipe and the angel at the end pointing down at the bottom and if neccesery extend with more clear pipe to have the end of the pipe a few millimeters over the bottom of the IKEA-box. What do you Think? Then you have the flow all the way through all the media. Just my five cents. I will build it and I can send a Movie to you.

    • @MarksShrimpTanks
      @MarksShrimpTanks  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thats a very good idea actually for a more even flow, I have more material here so I might do a filter upgrade with the materials and do something with like a base plate in side the filter , we will see and thank you for the great input :)

    Hey Mark,
    You say that you wil see improvents in for example breeding rate and shrimplet survival rate. But my ammonia, nitrite and nitrate are all already 0 and i have hardly any debris floating around in my water column. How would an increase in filter volume help my situation? (Because i reckon it won't). As i already have a thick layer of akadama on the bottom of my tank i reach different oxygenation levels right in the substrate. I still do something similar to you, but instead of pumace, i use akadama, so if my akadama is exhausted i Just replace the akadama in the filter, so i don't have to replace the substrate. Please tell me what you think about this. Could you do this for one of the filters you're going to make?

    • @MarksShrimpTanks
      @MarksShrimpTanks  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I could in the future, More filtration is always better I think because its not just about filtering the large debri you see floating around ..you want to give a home to all sorts of bacteria because some require oxygen and some dont so its pretty hard to do that if you only have one type of filtration.

    • @handemhan
      @handemhan 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's a really interesting point you make about the active substrate. I wonder if that could save you from rebooting your tank every couple of years, by instead of relying on active substrate as "substrate", you could fill a canister filter with it instead? Guess it might exhaust quicker though with all that water flow, hmmm

    • @MarksShrimpTanks

    • @MrPicaso72
      @MrPicaso72 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      So if I build one of these filters and have it in my tank during my fishless cycle, will the bacterial colonies shrink down to match the bioload of the shrimp? I like the fact that it's a submerged filter that will live for a while in the case of a power outage. I've also heard that if you give pumice a boil, it will no longer float, never tried it though. Nice tutorial.

    Can I use internal filter for shrimp tank?

    • @MarksShrimpTanks
      @MarksShrimpTanks  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      You can use most filter but you have to make sure they are baby shrimp safe, what I used to do is get the filter and put it in the the leg of a pair of womens tights,cut of what you dont need and tie it at the top.

      @@MarksShrimpTanks I have Beannie Baby containers that I have left over when I was keeping bettas. I have been thinking of using one of those to make something like yours. I think it will work perfectly since it's rectangular and can fit in a corner nicely. I don't have a youtube channel but maybe I can send you a video or picture of what it looks like when I'm finished. Also found something similar to your power head. It's 60 GPH. I got two.

      The reason I switched from air to powerheads is my compressor failed and I had no air for 2 weeks ..its safer for me to have a powerhead in each tank and replace the one single pump if it fails ..just a FYI my electricity bill is 1200 this month which is about £150 for Norway thats cheap hahaha
