      Well spotted! The clearance in that part of the video is for a touch & go, the landing shot is from one lap later. Combined the better explanation with the landing shot in editing. Actually have quite a few bloopers that were cut out 😉

    At slow speed flying, like at landings, as you said you use pitch for controlling airspeed and throttle for altitude. What about direction? Let's say you drift a bit from the center line, would you correct with ailerons or rudder?
    Just started to learn landings and I feel a bit goofy :)

    • @FromtheHangar
      @FromtheHangar  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Good question! On approach you would use ailerons as primary way to correct direction, but that also means using a bit of rudder at the same time to stay balanced like in any normal turn.

    Nice landing. Question, that's a Piper right? My Piper's POH says not to engage the carb heat during landing, my understanding is that is a cessna habit. Your thoughts?

    • @FromtheHangar
      @FromtheHangar  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      This Piper's POH says the same, use carb heat when icing is suspected. And don't use carb heat at full power. But the school procedures require carb heat on on downwind and turn it off for a go-around (to avoid the full power issue). So I fly this one the way they want it flown.
      Cessna is indeed different, they recommend carb heat on at almost any power reduction, because the carburettor is placed differently making them more susceptible to icing than the Piper.

    Hummm, I have been pulling power out once I think I can make the runway. You waited to do that at level flight over the runway...any particular reason why? (Long runway etc...)

    • @FromtheHangar
      @FromtheHangar  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yes, I've seen people pull the power when over the threshold. It works fine for typical small training aircraft, but it's not a great habit. You get a more controlled landing (and easier to teach) if you break it down into steps: 1 approach, 2 round out, 3 slowly reduce power and flare at the same time. After a while steps 2 and 3 go very close together if you get a bit more experience.
      Another reason to not just close the throttle over the threshold is that if you do it in something slightly larger like a Cessna 182 they tend to drop the nose, or a DA42 will create lots of drag from the two props automatically going to fine pitch and practically stop flying. So for students that want to move on to bigger things later it's better to have the throttle in their mind not linked to crossing the threshold but linked to the flare.

      @@FromtheHangar thanks for that detailed explanation!!! I think also the fact that you fly a better and more consistent pattern from base to final than I do. There are some points where I am super high and need to get down..and I just learned how to slip..Thanks for your response!!!

    It would be great if we saw the controls as he explains things, instead of his face. If he articulated a little more it would be helpful too.

    What’s with the Playtex Living Gloves?

    • @FromtheHangar
      @FromtheHangar  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      😂 Those were mandatory during the Covid lockdown here when renting a plane, also had to disinfect all the controls when returning it. Recently we're allowed to fly with more people again, but now it's mandatory to wear a face mask which really doesn't work for recording videos.

      @@FromtheHangar well that answered my question. Lame rule. I get it… but, still lame. Surprised they make you wear a mask too. Wow, strict! The gloves need to go, the covid doesn’t spread well at all from surfaces, especially if the plan is disinfected every time.
