Hello Tobi, Big compliment for lacing the wheel yourself. I can screw a few things on the wheel but I don't dare to put spokes in there. I think you captured the transition from Argentina to Australia in the video. Best regards Bernard
A very warm welcome to Australia! You started your journey in my current home of Salzburg and you have now reached the town where I was born and grew up :) I hope Australia treats you well
Probably the scariest part on this leg of the journey would have been the Qantas Flight. 😅😂 But all jokes aside I’m glad you arrived safely and enjoyed your visit down under 🇦🇺🫶🏻
Well welcome to Australia, it's been a long haul since those days when you left Germany. You should find Oz pretty easy with no mountains like in South America, however now you've got thousands of klms of flat road ahead of you and no great problem finding places to bush camp. One word of advice when you've found a place to camp in the Oz bush always do a through search of the area before you pitch your tent for Bull Dog ants. these ants grow up to 40+mm long. They have a large set of nippers at the head but its the sting they carry in their tail which is extremely painful. Years ago there have been human deaths from receiving too many stings at once. They can vary in colour having black heads and bums but the body could be red, or golden, or all black. They're extremely aggressive and can jump to a metre in height. They have exceptionally good eye sight and can track your movements. If you find one move your camp, cuz if there's one there'll be 101 close by. They're extremely active of a night. I was stung on my jaw when I was camping at 9 years old. It took several days for the swelling to go down. Fingers crossed for a tail wind across the Nullarbor. 👌👌👍👍
100% agree with this, everyone talks about the snakes and spiders, but bullants are just as much a threat if not more so due to how common they are and sometimes you dont notice them until too late
@@BasicStealthcamping Yes, Never leave your tent doors or screens open - even for one or two minutes as there are critters crawling around ALL the time and you DON"T want them inside you sleeping bag.
Wow, that was neat using a zip tie to true the wheel! I'll be honest I would've just bought a new wheel - good for you for relacing one! Have you laced/built wheels before? Cheers from the 'States! Can't wait to see more!
Firstly a Very Big Welcome to Australia, wishing you a very safe and enjoyable tour across our huge land. Australia is usually pretty flat so no huge Alps to climb except for the Snowy Mtns South of Canberra, not safe to go there now due to thick snow. It may be dry in the outback but it gets really cold, well into the minus C's overnight but at the same time on a clear night, the sky is a theatre of the Galaxies. Really looking forward to watching your trip across Australia.
Thank you! Yea, we've already cycled through parts of the mountains around Canberra and it was very nice. No snow though luckily. 😅 The sky & silence in the bush / Outback really is amazing... already had a few incredible nights now! 😊
Fantastic achievement the significant milestones are mounting up! Your enthusiasm for the adventure is infectious too. Tobi, you’ve inspired me to tackle upgrading my rear hub myself which I was putting off doing.
Willkommen in Australien! Andreas & Barbara
Hi guys great trip. Very inspiring. If you get a chance, you may want to check the end screens so they all line up along the route. The next video off this video is Peru vs a continuation of Australia for example. All the best.
Snakes are pretty much hibernating this time of year, almost mid winter. Sharks only in Ocean or in some ocean bound Rivers but inland rivers are ok. You'll probably find more spiders around the house than in the bush.
what an amazing couple you are .i greatly enjoy your adventures ,music and smiles. in 1990 i almost got picked up by ivan malit ( back pack murderer) while hitchhiking south of sydney. luck was with me that day ,and i barely escaped a horrible fate.
It's increasingly apparent that being an A++ bicycle mechanic is a must not an option when comes to bicycle touring... that kind of worries me because so far all I have done were fixing flats (replacing tubes), replacing pedals and a little bit of derailleurs adjustments! It's a lot of fun watching your videos great job!
It really depends on where you're cycling and what kind of bike you have. If you are in more developed areas you will always have a bike shop close by and should be able to get it fixed everywhere. If you have a more basic bike, with more basic components, you will generally be able to do more yourself as compared to bikes with gearboxes, for example, where it isn't really possible to fix them yourself on the road. In our opinion it makes sense to know some basics, but you don't need to be an expert. We generally enjoy bike maintenance and like to do certain things ourselves which we could also get done at a bike shop.
Loving your adventure guys. Yesterday my sister and her husband crossed into Spain after cycling from Scotland, they are one month in and loving it. Also if you find yourself in Melbourne and want a room for a night or two I’ve got a spare room and plenty of space for your bikes.
My son rode from Adelaide to Perth, he just said the big trucks are nothing compared to the Grey Nomads retirees and their caravans, he had a few close calls.
Hi fellow bikers! we were also sad because of the many dead animals we met during our bike our in Tasmania. I'm watching your interesting trip to Santiago, that's exactly what we want to do in the next few months. Love from Italy
Enjoy this country. I've finished austalia last november! And this coutry is for my the greatest experience! I love it! You didn't go down to melbourne? You goes inland?
Hallo, Ich habe die ZDF Doku gesehen. Super toll eure Leistung!!! Louisa, welche Regenjacke kannst du empfehlen? Du bist ja absolute Expertin: was hält trocken und ist atmungsaktiv? Wäre für deinen Rat sehr dankbar!!
Y'all thinking of New Zealand? There is the Tour Aotearoa along with another handful of routes like Te Kopiko and the Shaky Isles. Yell out if you do, wouldn't mind catching up!
This time we won't make it to New Zealand unfortunately. We were back and forth for a long time but decided against it mainly because winter just wouldn't be the nicest time to ride. It would be even colder and wetter than southeastern Australia already is right now. 😅 But we really want to come back at some point! The trails in NZ really look amazing. 😊
Great video! I hope you’ll enjoy cycling Australia. I heard the traffic can be pretty bad with little respect for cyclists, so I’m curious to hear from you guys how you experience this.
Yea, we've really been enjoying it! We also heard a lot of bad things concerning the drivers, but to be honest it's really been ok so far, even on the pretty busy Eyre Highway.
Most likely the "pawls" of the freewheel broke, at least we would think, but we / the bike mechanics didn't disassemble it to check as it wouldn't be something worth fixing anyway. Usually you would just replace the whole freewheel on the hub. ...parts break over time, and in our opinion it's not something worth spending a huge amount of time talking about.
Thank you very much for the offer! We will definitely keep it in mind when we get closer, although we already have some people we want to visit there. 😊
They are Germans. Yes, German passport holders must have a valid Australia visa to enter the country. For short-term visits, the required type of travel permit is the eVisitor visa. The eVisitor is the quickest and easiest type of Australia visa for German citizens to obtain, thanks to the modern online application service.
Exactly! 😊 It would also be possible to get a "proper" visa to stay longer than 3 months at a time, but that is more expensive, and then there are also "Work & Holiday" Visa options.
And that is why I am not fond of the Cassette type hub and gear system. I've had the same problem, and had to get a whole new wheel. The old style gearing was better.
Generally, despite the many stories around venomous animals in Australia, it is very rare to encounter, let alone get bitten by one. Especially in winter many potentially dangerous animals are either hibernating or less active, meaning that encounters are even more rare. That being said, the primary first aid for any bite (snake / spider) is a pressure immobilization bandage, which we carry, and to call an ambulance (we have a local SIM card). Also, as in some cases an allergic reaction to a bite can be more dangerous than the actual bite, we carry an EpiPen for emergencies.
