Not only that, the cars were light and sports oriented, and actually affordable to run. But most importantly, they were under 1 ton with the driver and fuel 😂😂
@breathoffreshair7314 bro, we are talking about cars you could afford to buy as a 20 year old kid, F1 cara in the 80's ran 1500hp when qualifying 💀💀💀💀💀💀
I had a 1999 vtr as my first car, back in 2006. The insurance was £1800, with no years no claims at 19 years old. Also had the vts a few years later. Great little cars, surprisingly nippy!
Ur right mate great wee cars a have a vts a have owned for 13yrs and was ma brothers car before that just waiting on the prices going up and Al cash it in🥳😂
Mate at college had a VTS , brand new, when they were released in ‘97. Felt like an absolute missile compared to the usual 45-55 bhp novas , metros, polos and the like the rest of us had!
My Mate had one too, and drove it like it stolen, had a bit of a body kit on it, dropped and i think it had a bit of engine work, He said to me, when we last had a drink, that he would have another one as an old school Toy.
My mate had the phase 1 VTS and drove that like it was stolen, it was the very 1st car to introduce me to a hot hatch, Was quite a vicious thing. He had the all the ICE in it, and the CD changer. Which ended up going in my 1st car! Still got the original loom for it in my 306!
can remember buying these for £40 - £150 back when I was younger can't believe current prices I fancied one the other week and looked cpuldnt find a clean one less then 4k
I think the VTS was the 16 Valve one...Standard VTR was 8 Valve....The VTS engine in the Saxo was the same as the GTI engine in the Pug 106 GTI I believe.
The Saxo was such a great car back in the late 90’s-00’s, it felt so ahead of its time and I know so many people who had one and it was such a great era to be part of. I would love to drive one again to bring back so many happy memories, especially the VTS that I always wanted but they are a lot rarer to come by!
Hated these when they were common, when i was a teenager. I decided to own one recently and actually found it a fun little car. Was really surprised by it. The free insurance when new helped make these a popular choice.
My first car was a 99' T reg so pre face lift Saxo VTR, absolutely loved it and it was bright blue and had blue clocks too! So thanks for the trip down memory lane 👌🏻
Love them, was desperate to get a vtr when I was 18, but ended up with an astra. Guy down the road from me had a blue one on T plate with skirts, a splitter and rear valance, was obsessed with it. Such a cool car, but one you never see anymore
Always wanted a Saxo, growing up and seeing the old AX in France it looked much better than what other brands offered in my mind. When I was 17 ended up with a '03 fiesta, I love these cars and think they are miles ahead of their modern equivalents for new drivers or for a city car.
I used to have one of these in the 2 tone silver and grey at the bottom I loved it literally lasted for years no service or nothing like you do when in your first cars as a teenager 🤣🤦🏼
1st car I've ever owned was a Saxo VTR 1,6 8V. Loved it I put it into a field and survived so not the worst motor! Cost me a grand and was 1,5 to insure lol. Being 17 was fun! I knew what I was doing... Put a K&N induction kit and it was on coils so basically built to kill
Take that wee car up the backroads and attack them until the brakes go soft lol, you don't need 300bhp+ to get a real buzz from driving and these era cars prove it. Sister had a black vtr and it was great fun. I've a friend who has a 2019 M5 that has become an ornament due to the acquisition of a 182 Cleo, that speaks volumes about the lightweight small old skool hot hatches and the enjoyment they bring when you take them out and drive the wheels off them. Four branch and a cheeky cam maybe Calvin ?🤔🤣
That was my second car, really pulls on all gears. Only downside I didn't like about it was the windows, always felt cold in car even with heaters on full blast.
Great video Calv... I had an identical one back in 2001 from new... sold it 3.5 years later to a "new driver" thanks to his mum and dad... it never was MOTd again.. :-(
Saxo’s was ace back in the day, i drove a VTS from Scotland to Germany for laps round the Nurburgring 😅 rear axles were also a common problem on these cars. Great video great memories
I wanted one when I passed in 2005 but I couldn’t get insured but as I got older there were better cars to have but I didn’t miss out on the fun because mates had them and we were always thrashing about or up hams hall in them.
What a beaut. Used to go out in me older cousin's, had a cam, spicy exhaust, intake and a chip. Lit up in 1st 2ns and 3rd, it was unreal at handbrake turns haha. Cracking little beasts
❤️ My Saxo vtr FP02 MGY! Sold it for my Clio 182 FF, which sadly was written off this Jan. Now I have golf r mk7. Miss my French hatchbacks. Hot hatches will never be the same again 😔
Great to see a little VTR. My first car was a mk1 VTR then upgraded to a MK2 VTS. They were so much fun and had a big culture around them too. Glad this one is still driving, they did have lots of a problems though. They rust a lot, the gearbox bearing go and the rear axel bearings go. My VTS went through 3 rear axels. But I love seeing them out and about still.
I had a mk1 Saxo vtr 1999 and it was a very nice car back in the days I had four 6 x 9 on parcel shelf and two 12” kickers and rockford fostgate punch and Phoenix gold four channel amp and for head unit I had a kenwood dvd player and brought a Freeview box to watch tv on it with a little aerial on top loved mine
fuckin hell that's a rare beast, the Citroen AX! It was said that if you put the full nosh from the VTS saxo into a AX. The AX was a bad tempered bastard due to the weight ratio. Do remember from my metro days, on the forum. when the Rover metro GTIs and the AX GTs were about. The metro lads were thinking the GTi was the king kong, I was looking at an AX as a 1st car but ended up with a metro. ( metro was cheaper to buy still a great little car) anyway a AX GT and Metro GTI had a race off the lights, and the AX beat the metro. The lads on the forum were going ape! I remember having a right giggle at the time reading the replies.
I had both VTR 90hp 8v (wrote it off 9 months old🤣) then replaced it with the VTS 120hp 16v main difference was u could hit 60mph in 2nd gear making the 0-60 quicker. Great car for the time and probably getting on for 400kg extra weight for a modern car but then we have more toys. 12k roughly for new one back in the day for a vts I think.
Always wanted a vts when I was 16. By the time I was 18 and could get one though, the type r was affordable to me, so I skipped the vts. Honestly, I would have one now just for nostalgia. Set of neons, exhaust, sub, an aftermarket headset, then throw your chip in and you're good to go.
Bought C4 Vts 180Bhp, 2L petrol, brand new in november 2006 and still have it . The car has less than 100K miles and I kept it as spare car which I never needed. The only problem now is lacker peel. I don't use it during the winter at all but after d winter, I occasionally drive it . and service it b4 the winter. I kept it totally original except for the radio 📻 which I upgraded to dvd music centre within 2days of purchase, but still have the original one. I was very happy with the car since day one and I haven't changed anything under the bonnet except the service and this year I had the timing belt changed. I really don't know what to do with it now at my older age. Sometimes just dusting down and run the engine for 3 to 5mn or quick spin around the house brings back a smile to my face. AND I hate citroens except this model.
Saxons VTRs and VTs, and Nova SR and GTEs and Gsi”s and xr2i and RS turbos was all the lads had when I was 17 and I’m now 38 😂 Happy memories, my friends had both VTR and VTS, Vts I think had a 0-60 in 7.2 or there abouts if I remember (ain’t looked 😂) very nippy. Insurance was insane for a VTS
I remember those days too, i am 37. I think the Nova may have been on its way out then, and the XR2 too. I think people started with the early corsa, and the mk3 and mk4 fiestas. I had the Rover metro, that i bought for 180 quid at the time, and it was fine car. ( try picking a car up for that money now!) the MOT tester said, get the handbrake on it sorted, and that was it. He has got a fine little runner. Later switched to the 306, had the turbo diesel, and then the HDI which i still own now, had it for 15 years. Getting a little rough now body wise,
@@procta2343 I remember you could pick up a XR2i at auction for around £500 haha CANT buy much for that now 😂 I had one and a 306 GTI-6, a MR2 Turbo (paid £2200 and was Mint 😂) then had a Suberu Impreza WrX Turbo Jap import which I paid £2400 for on a M Plate 😂 before them I had Nova GTE and a Calibra 2.0 16v. Two GTI Escorts, and a Fiesta Turbo that had a Escort RS Turbo Engine in it and run under Cosworth Management. Boy do I miss the old cars 😂 Had many since them, think I’ve had about 38 cars in total when I paste counted 😂😂 I always wanted a BMW 325i Sport but never did get one, used to be able to pick up well cheap, but you need £15,000 plus now 😭😭 We should of kept them all, would of been Rich now 😂
I went for the one of the other French hot hatches of the era for my first car. I had a 106 GTi in Blaze Yellow. I was £2500 a year for insurance at 18. It felt like a rocket ship when I first got it.
A few months ago, an article in the paper, states that these are on the verge of vanishing from our roads in the uk, But then again i think these ended been the most scrapped car in the mid 2000s. I remember seeing a load of them in, and not one had the standard rear lights at all!
Done a vts conversion on a 1.4, all the bolt ons Newman cams, pug sport exhaust, pug sport air intake 421 manifold stripped it out and it chipped on right up until it hit a wall, then it got stripped to a shell the same night before the insurance could ask questions lol
Had one, lime green, with cheap monthly payments, and for some reason, I loved it. Great fun, but looking back now, it wasn't brilliant, i did roll 6 times and lived 🙂
Remember test driving a vts back in 99’ when my current car was a 59hp rover metro, felt like the fastest car in the world and pedals tiny for my size 12 feet 😂
Wouldn't trust a saxo, recently there was a fatality in my area involving a saxo, they hit a transit at 40 mph and both the driver and passenger were killed instantly. Their ncap ratings are shocking.
I’ve loved my VTR tried to locate my old one to no joy, I would love one again as a weekend car such a fun car to drive and back in the day off the mark they surprised a lot of cars! you should keep this Chuck 5-6k at it and a turbo and make it mint and make some content on it only going to go up in value
Mate I'm not surprised it beat all the other more powerful things. I have a citroen c3 VTR as a car to get to work & back. Similar in weight n power to the saxo and its a little go kart!. Love throwing it around
My first car was a 1.1 Saxo Desire. Man it was SO slow. These VTR and VTS models were like £900 at the time, but I ended up moving to a MK5 Golf instead. Kinda wish I'd grabbed a VTR for a laugh.
Loving the little Citroën mate an old car now but what a little hot hatch. I've got a few quid spare for a few months so you know it I've become a dreamcatcher. I don't expect anything back but I hope it helps the giving back cause abit.
surprised no comments from the top has mentioned the irony that the £1709 listing in your autotrader search is your own and that very car 😂. anyways saxos were all the rave back in the early 2000s, i never had one, but i did have a metro which was also the rave. mates had novas. good ole youth moments. bring all the nostalgia back.
This car and the Yaris T Sport show the benefits of light weight. Modern A3 needs a remap to 144 bhp to match the little Saxo! Yaris beats 270 bhp Rangie!! Crazy !!
Remember those cars well. You either had them where I live , a corsa gsi or what I had which was a Renault Clio 1.8 16 v. Hope you can get one of those on your channel mate 👍🏻
Vts should sound better than a vtr. I've had both with a saxsport exhaust and the 16v are one of my favourite sounding hot hatches. Proper little cars these
First car was a 03 saxo, in silver, just a 1.1 desire model, one of my mates sold it to me for £300 thinking it was going to fail it’s mot, it passed with flying colours, only 32k on the clock. It was slow, but it was great fun, like a little go kart around the town 😂
I bought a VTR brand new back in 1999 and it came with 2 years free insurance. It was a nice fun car to be fair and the free insurance was great for someone fairly young. 😎
I built a pug 106 basically the same thing as a saxo only using standard parts from lots of different Peugeot and Citroen's it was still only a NA 1.6 8v and it did 0 to 50 in under 6 seconds
I was like he's bashing Citroen he clearly hasn't drove this car yet lol the vtr is a top car and back in the day nothing could beat it off the mark fact.
Seats in them are very marmite. We’ve had a lot of them in stock and alot of people walk away because of the hard seats and bolt upright seating position 😂.
cool video, not surprised it didn't finish last, they were nippy little cars, though I am surprised it lost out to the Yaris T Sport! keep em coming Calvin!
👏Love it, takes me right back, my 2002 black Saxo VTR was the first “decent“ car I bought, about 18 years ago. Had forgotten about the pedals until you said 😂
Yep, I'd get cramp in my knee on long drives from having to twist my knee sideways 😂 great fun cars, don't make em like that anymore. Shame they had very little rust protection from new and rotted like crazy.

200bhp was Cosworth territory. Now my Volvo diesel estate has more than that 😂

Saxos have almost disappeared in my opinion.
I don't see any

Back in day when I was a youth 😂🤣😂 I can remember some funny times in a saxo.. . Calvin 🤣😂🤣 loving the power of the saxo beast
The calibra and the rover tomcat were my favourite cars back then. My mate had a yellow vtr and it was brilliant down the lanes, lots of fun
I used to have a blast with these in my XR2i back in the day, was a close race lol niceone Cal, haven't seen one of these for a while in the wild. ✌🏼
Always fancied a VTS saxo for years, I’d like to think as they’re getting rarer they will one day be appreciated as a classic!
I've a 306 with this engine in. Amazing fun, very reliable.
I have a 306 HDI, the 306 is a very strong car! owned mine for 15 years.
Bought a good one a few years back, there just going up in value
Calv, thats more than good enough for POD! I would love a whippet like that to get me to work and back and save my car for good :)
9:20 LOOL Calvin just remembered there’s a camera recording him
absolutely loved the VTR, light fun and simple...
Enjoyed this video, had a VTR and VTS when I was younger
These are great little cars, i had one when i was 20 wish i still had it tbh.
This car and the Yaris T Sport show the benefits of light weight. Modern A3 needs a remap to 144 bhp to match the little Saxo! Yaris beats 270 bhp Rangie!! Crazy !!
Does this manifold have air intake temp sensor on throttle body or elsewhere?
Remember those cars well. You either had them where I live , a corsa gsi or what I had which was a Renault Clio 1.8 16 v. Hope you can get one of those on your channel mate 👍🏻
Don't see many saxos around anymore. Be a modern classic soon
Vts should sound better than a vtr. I've had both with a saxsport exhaust and the 16v are one of my favourite sounding hot hatches. Proper little cars these
👌 u heard a s1600 Saxo? Class!!
In Northern Ireland. These were sold new with 3 years free insurance, vts was £140 a month, vtr was £130 a month, with £500 deposit. Mental
Max power build 4 Planet of dreams 👍
I still got a x plod head unit In my 05 ford ranger
First car was a 03 saxo, in silver, just a 1.1 desire model, one of my mates sold it to me for £300 thinking it was going to fail it’s mot, it passed with flying colours, only 32k on the clock.
It was slow, but it was great fun, like a little go kart around the town 😂
Amazing little nippy cars such a shame they don't make little fun cars like that now
I bought a VTR brand new back in 1999 and it came with 2 years free insurance.
Everything these days is disposable old is for sure gold
Had a cracking VTS many years ago
Get a vts on and lets see the difference in times.
Had a 1.4 Saxo Furio which was a VTR lookalike. More expensive to insure than my RS 2000 MK5.
Ahh brings back some childhood memories grandad had this car taught me to drive in it
Had a Y reg Vts in metallic green in my youth, loved that car. Raced my mate in his Vtr and destroyed it lol
Saxo's and Peugeot 106 such a cool cars
I loved my saxo VTR awesome little things.
I was like he's bashing Citroen he clearly hasn't drove this car yet lol the vtr is a top car and back in the day nothing could beat it off the mark fact.
I wanted the yellow one back in the day. Couldn't afford the insurance lol.
I had a gold saxo vtr loved it had it 7 years was 4 years old when I got it. Was immaculate.
I'm kicking around in a 2009 Suzuki Swift sport... 120ish bhp. You cant beat an old school light weight warm hatch for smiles per miles.
Seats in them are very marmite. We’ve had a lot of them in stock and alot of people walk away because of the hard seats and bolt upright seating position 😂.
@@winzfeld1 oh really, I wonder if people expect a go kart to be comfortable, if so... get a lexus.... and if its upright, recline it a little😁
cool video, not surprised it didn't finish last, they were nippy little cars, though I am surprised it lost out to the Yaris T Sport! keep em coming Calvin!
👏Love it, takes me right back, my 2002 black Saxo VTR was the first “decent“ car I bought, about 18 years ago. Had forgotten about the pedals until you said 😂
Yeah I remember the pedals are so close to each other lol 🤣
Yep, I'd get cramp in my knee on long drives from having to twist my knee sideways 😂 great fun cars, don't make em like that anymore. Shame they had very little rust protection from new and rotted like crazy.
I used to have a saxo vtr and paid my mate £100 for a Citroen c2 vts engine fitted! 😂 went like shit off a shovel! Good old days 🤙🏾
VTR 8 valve VTS 16 valve what a blast from the past my mate had a C2 vts was a wee rocket
Just don't see saxo on the roads there was loads of them now wondering how much my 106 quiksilver vts conversion is worth? Mine on 62,000 miles
