Social media is extremely toxic. The internet used to be a fun and exciting way to escape from reality, now reality is the best new escape from the internet.
My word. Social media used to be my escape from reality. But social media has become SUPER and I mean SUPER toxic, that reality doesn’t seem like a bad place anymore.
That's so true. Like when social media was first a thing I used it to escape from my harsh teenage years with a single parent household. But now I even have to force myself to go outside for exercise or socializing. With Covid its even worse now, cause the situation forced me to be isolated longer. So I see where you coming from.
Tiktok is extremely toxic. You'll often see hundreds of people cyberbullying a single person with the minority of people trying to correct them and it's sad :/
I absolutely agree with you, nowadays someone can be going through a hard time whether it may be a loss, discrimination, disability, etc, the majority of people on social media have no empathy whatsoever and treat them like a joke and it's not even funny. Social media is also damaging them and they can barely pay attention to anything in general.

when emi brought up how people were performative during the blm movement and how the black squares were a product of that......... finally someone called it out
I definitely agree with you, but I do think that it was a way to show support for people who didn’t really know what else they could do. For example: I posted the black screen too (when I learned why people found it pretentious I deleted it), it was in the middle of the pandemic and the advice was to not travel unless absolutely necessary. Unfortunately all the BLM protests where in the big cities and I was far away from those. It was difficult for me because I really really wanted to do something for BLM but I just couldn’t. The black screen was a way that I showed my support. Nevertheless, I completely understand your point of view!
@@isisvda it’s the fact that people posted black squares and said “i hear you...” yet haven’t spoken, donated, petitioned, posted, etc. since then. at that point you did it as an aesthetic. not knowing what to do is too easy to say when the internet is always at your disposal, it’s about actually wanting to use those tools and change the narrative. also i do understand that people can do these things off social media and not have to post about it, and that’s totally okay. but again, there is no excuse to post a black square and not follow up with some sort of education/activism.

Can we talk about how teenagers can have a peaceful and deep conversation even if they don't agree with each other but adults start yelling and get angry and violent...?
I don't wanna say all adults but most adults. I feel like social media has given us a sense of community and understanding allowing some of us teens to mature more than most adults. But yeah it is crazy
I'm glad social media exists, but don't let it take over your life. You don't NEED it. It's a great place to meet people, but you NEED moments with your own thoughts.
When she said “It’s really scary to see my friends disconnect with me and connect with these people they’ve never met” that hit me because a lot of the time I’ll be on FaceTime/ on the phone with friends and do this but never saw it this way and it’s scary how normalised this has become and a lot of things you realise you miss as a result.
I am not the type of person to facetime/videocall, and I've been calling a lot of my friends lately... most of them answer other calls, scroll through instagram, play games, etc when I'm on a call with them... and it's insane to me. They don't see a problem with it, not even just how it can be rude, but really how disgusting it is. I cannot believe that's normal. I cannot believe it. If they do those things and I ask them to and they won't stop, I refuse to call them. It's disappointing that's what most people do nowadays.
Same... I try to finish my schoolwork early so I can catch up with my friends if I go to see them they’ll be on there phones scrolling through insta or snapping random boys, and I kinda take that personally like they don’t wanna hang out w/ me or something, but honestly it’s there problem if they think snapping and scrolling is more important than our friendship... let it be that way then (they prolly don’t even need me anyway) but the thing is I feel like I couldn’t live without them but they could live without me.....
I think it’s because adults are trying to get something out of the conversation (as in be proven right and stuff) whilst these kids are actually trying to discuss the issues with social media
Killer D im sure there’s also some sort of agreement that they all make to be civil and have an actual discussion, rather than argue. this is what debates should be like, and im sure the argument mentality does come into play and you get into the “im right youre wrong stage” but i would assume the people filiming acted as moderators and also cut parts where they talked over each other

"Before social media I just thought I was a masculine girl"- I don't know about this person's case but sometimes I feel like this is actually one of the most detrimental parts of social media. People thinking they must be trans because they don't fit stereotypes. Social media shouldn't be your source of information on such topics. If you think you might be trans you should go to a doctor and get diagnosed with gender dysphoria, not believe some random people on the internet.
I follow Alex and he's definitely a real trans guy but I agree on the overall point. Being trans has honestly become an internet trend and that's why we have so many detransitioners who end up dissing the community later. These days you don't need to see a doctor for evaluation before medically transitioning, and that's a problem. Even saying that you need Gender Dysphoria to be trans will get you cancelled these days. So people transition on a whim hoping that they'll be 'hip' and it will solve all their problems only to find out shortly later that they ruined their life. You don't even really get clout for it anymore because just about every kid claims to be trans or queer now. The whole mess of it all is just very sad. There's nothing wrong with being trans, but the glorification of it is toxic. It's a very difficult life to lead, even for those who do suffer from dysphoria and actually are transgender. Regret is a whole nother' layer for those who transitioned without dysphoria.
For a lot of gay and trans people the internet provides us with a lot of freedom and information that we don't normally get in the outside world due to the danger of homophobia. You can go to a random doctor, but you don't know if they are safe or not for you. But with social media we can share our experiences and help eachother find doctors that are accommodating. I truly believe the only reason that we have more resources today is because we found eachother through the internet and were able to form a community far beyond the gay bars.
It's the opposite for me, I used to think I was trans because of the Internet but I came to my senses and realized I'm actually just a masculine girl lol

There's something in human psychology that tends to turn people into attention whores, it becomes an obsession, and that doesn't make us happy. And you don't learn the important skill of how to ignore what other people think and focusing on other things apart from getting attention.
i agree with all this, but as someone who has basically no following i gained lots of self confidence just from making fulfilling friendships with people online, which kind of reminded me that i was someone worth being friends with in a way? which is obviously a different point, as i just made friends in the kpop journal community on instagram, but that really helped me gain happiness in myself (and it's only like 3 friends lol and i have 60 followers) but yes i do agree with all your points made
exactly, they might label it as self confidence but it's not self confidence if it's depending on outside approval. Something that not many people get tbh. Like sure it feels great if other people like what you're doing and give you attention but that's not what your self worth should depend on. True self confidence means being happy and content with what you're doing even if other people don't like it
I quit Instagram when I was 17, best decision I could’ve done. Growing up without it added so much color, time and mental freedom so now I have joy in the simplest things in life.
Same!! I quit using Instagram when I was 15 and it's made my mental health much better I had much more free time to do my hobbies and not worry about likes or feel the need to post all the time qwq
I felt so sad when emi’s voice was almost trembling and she was like almost crying, i could relate with emma but felt really bad about how emi was treated and when she talked about the aquarium thing i really cried cause she really seemed like a victim of everything wrong with social media It’s more like influencers vs non influencer maybe bring someone who’s not at all in social media next time
okay correct me if i’m wrong. i’ve only ever heard someone say social media made them more confident, if they have more followers than the average. i’ve never heard someone who just has a normal account say it’s made them more confident. the popularity is what makes you more confident and that’s sad; it’s shouldn’t be that way. you shouldn’t base your confidence off of your audience, you should base it off of yourself. work on self love. 💜
I have a normal account and it's made me more confident. Having access to social media allowed me to educate myself on topics ranging from body positivity to history and politics, and ultimately has allowed me to become smarter and more rational, hence increasing my faith in myself, and therefore my confidence. Also, posting online makes me feel happier and more secure regardless of the levels of engagement.
I love emi’s voice and energy. I feel like she’s just one of those people you can talk to for an hour straight and walk away from that conversation feeling good because you just vibed with her so much.
emi, if you’re reading this, i’m so incredibly sorry for how u were treated by those dance girls. the way that they treated you was absolutely disgusting and unacceptable. i know i don’t know u, but i love you so much and i am sending you love and peace. you are so strong ❤️
ppl, primarily new gens, have horrible self-control and coping mechanisms so all that toxicity just gets spewed online like scorpion venom. ever heard of a journal?
I totally agree, I can also sympathize with her suffering. PD: I was about to "remove" the "hair" on your profile pic but then my meditation reflex stopped me lmao. In a weird way you helped me realize my practice is working out. Thank you, Namaste.
i feel for Emi. she’s so sweet and beautiful but hate in the world has attacked her out of insecurity and anger. i see so much love and potential in her, and i agree that tiktok is absolutely SO toxic. however, i believe that other forms of social media can be used positively
Imo, TikTok can be fun. I rarely use it, but when I do, sometimes it is fun. Ofc, as with other social media, a lot of bad content exist. Actual bad content, not the cringy content.
The line that Emi said, "I'm afraid of if I search for that validation that I am not going to get it", really stuck out to me because it's pretty much the same reason I don't really use/post on social media. It's a little comforting to hear there are people that have the same thoughts about social media validation as I do. Also, this social media validation impacts my self image of others acceptance towards me, which has unfortunately been negative at times in my past. Great video however!
i hope you find your happiness🙂just know someone understands you and will be there for you no matter your struggle you are a powerful and amazing person
yes. I once was on social media (TikTok, snapchat, insta) but just because I deleted them all and am against their usage doesn’t mean I’m suddenly incompetent
yeah, also how they were laughing about how tiktok is easy to enjoy and that it’s because they have short attention spans. tiktok legitimately is the thing causing their attention spans to shorten, they are so used to the instant dopamine rush that comes from those 15-60 second videos that their brains arent able to enjoy long-term enjoyment/activities such as reading a book or having an actual real life hobby for entertainment. social media and mindless scrolling pretty much rots their brains in that way.
literally, theyre assuming they dont know what they talk about even thought the anti social media kids definately know what tbey are talking about more than the pro social media ones, they think they know what theyre talkjng about but they need to reasses that.
I wish they’d talked more about how perceived levels of attractiveness shape your social media experience. I’m sure Alexa works very hard on her page but she’s also conventionally attractive by society’s standards and that plays a part in following and the kinds of community that you get
Yes! Especially after TikTok was caught pushing conventionally attractive people in their algorithm. People who are conventionally attractive have it more easier than somebody who is not in social media
No, its the content too. There's alot of people who aren't good looking some don't even show their face. And create good content and have alot of followers. BUT if someone is attractive, and just dances, then ofcourse people will go with the attractive person because they want to SEE more of that attractive person. If 2 people did the same thing, just 1 is more attractive then the other, the attractive person will get selected.
Younger me would’ve residing to the pro social media group before i dedicated my life for psychology and studying how lack of exposure to complex human-to-human socializing could decrease our visceral/analytical empathy and empathetic attitude, which explains why the internet in general has become so unhealthy and toxic if we’re not cautious
Exactly ! and I think that’s what scare me the most for our and younger generations… especially since our futur won’t get brighter (I think). Because what kind of human are you if you cannot feel and show empathy ?
“I’m afraid If I search for that validation, I’m not going to find it” ooof that hit hard. I think so many people feel this way. I just want to hug her and I hope she realizes she’s valid no matter what anyone else thinks! ❤️
Alexa kind of contradicted herself by relying on We're Not Really Strangers (Social Media) in order to have conversations. Why do teens have to rely on social media to have a basic conversation?
Exactly. There was always the same type of discussions WNRS offers in real life. In fact more. The issue is that all of these social concepts were transferred to social media and the proportions of people encouraging these conversations is lower in social media then in real life, hence why nobody even heard of WNRS other then Alexa. The fact that merely one page on IG exists isn’t enough to make up the burden of less communication over the past decade as our social lives have been transferred from being almost entirely in real life to being majority wise online
they should’ve talked about child predators on social media! that’s a big thing. also 30k-40k a month?! it’s really sad to know that ‘influencers’ get paid more than doctors.
It’s not the teens fault. It’s the system. It’s not the teens who decide how much they get paid. Blame the way the world is, blame governments for deciding that doctors only get a certain amount.
Yea but u also gotta keep in mind how short fame lasts..u can go viral and itll last for a few months but as soon as ur irrelevant or cancelled u lost so much money over such a short period of time..its not a very reliable career unlike doctors and most other jobs
@101 Influences make a lot of money because of their popularity, they make a lot of money for other companies, that's why they deserve the money they make.

when emi brought up how people were performative during the blm movement and how the black squares were a product of that......... finally someone called it out
I definitely agree with you, but I do think that it was a way to show support for people who didn’t really know what else they could do.

Regret is a whole nother' layer for those who transitioned without dysphoria.
exactly! you really get it
For a lot of gay and trans people the internet provides us with a lot of freedom and information that we don't normally get in the outside world due to the danger of homophobia. You can go to a random doctor, but you don't know if they are safe or not for you. But with social media we can share our experiences and help eachother find doctors that are accommodating.
I truly believe the only reason that we have more resources today is because we found eachother through the internet and were able to form a community far beyond the gay bars.
It's the opposite for me, I used to think I was trans because of the Internet but I came to my senses and realized I'm actually just a masculine girl lol
gender dysphoria doesn't automatically mean that youre trans though

100% agree. even 13 is way too young even. those are kids. they don't know when to stop, when to block someone, if someone is a predator, what that person really looks like, it's just so dangerous. i don't even think kids should have phones unless it is for calling parents like just a cell phone. makes me really terrified for the future generation
I was also on the internet when I was younger but I’ve never experienced any of those things. The internet teaches a lot of things, such as English for example. I think that I’m very lucky to have a better experience on the internet than most people. I’m grateful
but to be fair, I was on the internet in its early days. Everything’s a lot more toxic and fragile now
Honestly, I agree. As a 11 year old, I'm exposed to things that I'm too young to know about. Now, I have a more of an advanced brain due social media. Luckily, I don't get sexual or predatory messages like you did. Even kids in my class have Discord, Instagram, Snapchat, Tiktok, Facebook, and have the newest I-phones. Not to mention, wear clothes that aren't for their age. And are also completely different from years ago. Such as crop tops, extremely short shorts, scrunchies, and even makeup!! To remind you, these kids that I'm talking about are ages 10-14!!! We also know about aesthetics like cottagecore, vintage, vaporware, ect. In 5th grade, we were doing a project in which we had to present ourselves. It would be later showed to the whole grade at the last day of school. One girl in my class asked someone to put an aesthetic background for the project since she didn't know how to. I know this might sound hypocritical, but I hate children in our generation. I have a feeling that as a generation people born in the 90s and early 00s are well more open minded and have grown in a space where talking and listening and having your own opinion out no matter what other people think has been given more importance. I'd normally see my parents not telling some things to other adults just because of the "it is not convenient, what would they thing of me" whereas i have the feeling that this generation has overall enforced dialogue and communication a lot as a base for our human relationships. It's just like I have this feeling that we have more awareness about how to deal with psychological and social issues publicly than older adults do. Maybe as people grow older they just become more comfortable with their own ideas and beliefs and stop sharing them publicly, but I feel like this won't be the same for us

Yeah. It’s a detriment to the social skills of a lot of ACTUAL teens. Online friendships and relationships don’t even come close to the real thing, even over FaceTime calls you aren’t developing crucial social skills in the way you normally would.
I have no platform. Yes i’m anti-social but I have been since before i was on social media. It depends on the person. I actually find it easier to communicate with people online. I wouldn’t communicate if I didn’t do it online first. Social media doesn’t forced u to be antisocial if anything it has helped me be more social. Who cares if it’s through a screen? It’s still a conversation and that’s a huge step for some people.
Exactly like practically all the pro have platforms and loads of fans like... obvious they would like it they have fans.
and it’s not being social to comment back to ppl
i think the question should have been looked at with the perspective of how it effects social lives in the real world, where you have to talk and hang out.
because social media has done nothing for me in that aspect, if anything it has made it more difficult to have social interactions because i do not have the comfort of being behind a screen
@@generationfutureproduction9233 but does it help you make friends in the real world? do you actually hang out with and do things that are productive for your social health with these people?
I could never understand when seniors were saying the typical phrase "It's that phone." After months of lockdown, and glued to my phone, becoming slowly more miserable and depressed, I realized what they meant. Social media can be used in good ways, but the apps are designed to make us scroll, endlessly, and mindlessly, as we disconnect from the true outside world, slowly becoming dumber and sadder. I have since basically deleted all social media on my phone, and use youtube only for a little bit on my laptop every day. I truly see how evil, and mentally destructing social media and our phones are, whether you can see it or not.
@japanische agreed my phone literally is a computer. It’s so good for alarms, calculators, reminders, GPS, fast instant texting, communication, etc etc etc. I think especially as teenagers we abuse this power that generations ago would die for
@japanische same here I’m like the only one with no social media in my grade and in my friend group. Without Snapchat, it’s hard to communicate with everyone since it’s their primary texting platform. Nice pfp too

Emi is the realest one there. probably the only one I could see myself relating to in a meaningful way on the topic of social media
They missed the obvious fact that the "self-confidence" they speak of is largely dependent on your personal experience on the platforms. Lots of likes and positive attention will make confidence a lot easier at first, but when that positive attention suddenly goes away then what? It's a known phenomenon that people quickly adjust to their current level of attention and start to obsess over getting more and not losing what they have. All of a sudden 50k followers doesn't make you feel better if you used to have 100k and you lost half of them.
I dont have any photos and social media made me happier about my future and myself
I got Instagram recently. I’m glad I didn’t get it when I was younger though. I could have easily seen myself falling into a giant pit.
Tik tok has made me more confident and I dont make or post anything on any platforms. Just thought I would share that
I love emi’s voice and energy.

Even tumblr in the early 2010s was less toxic than tik tok and Instagram
And that says it all. Oh gosh it was terrifying and I was already on my mid/late teen years.
ppl, primarily new gens, have horrible self-control and coping mechanisms so all that toxicity just gets spewed online like scorpion venom. ever heard of a journal?
Emi is actually so beautiful, she seems like a kind soul.I wish someone would have hugged her, just seeing her sad made me feel so bad.
I totally agree, I can also sympathize with her suffering.
PD: I was about to "remove" the "hair" on your profile pic but then my meditation reflex stopped me lmao. In a weird way you helped me realize my practice is working out. Thank you, Namaste.

She looks smart and charismatic too
oh shes a SHE nvm.

TikTok is by far the most manipulative and addicting social media platform, I really don’t understand why it’s so widely accepted/consumed.
You should think more about the reason behind your need for comfort instead of stopping with acceptance/validation.
i hope you find your happiness🙂just know someone understands you and will be there for you no matter your struggle you are a powerful and amazing person

Disturbing that the pro social kids assume that the anti social media kids just don't understand how to use social media. Lot of ego with those kids.
yes. I once was on social media (TikTok, snapchat, insta) but just because I deleted them all and am against their usage doesn’t mean I’m suddenly incompetent
True there's my one friend who is a pro social kid I told her to barely use social media she said that's very bad you must use sm 😂 I said ok idc
yeah, also how they were laughing about how tiktok is easy to enjoy and that it’s because they have short attention spans. tiktok legitimately is the thing causing their attention spans to shorten, they are so used to the instant dopamine rush that comes from those 15-60 second videos that their brains arent able to enjoy long-term enjoyment/activities such as reading a book or having an actual real life hobby for entertainment. social media and mindless scrolling pretty much rots their brains in that way.
literally, theyre assuming they dont know what they talk about even thought the anti social media kids definately know what tbey are talking about more than the pro social media ones, they think they know what theyre talkjng about but they need to reasses that.
I agree. When it comes to stuff like social media, not liking it doesn't mean that one doesn't understand it. It just doesn't suit them.
People who are conventionally attractive have it more easier than somebody who is not in social media
exactly
great point
I agree 100%

Yeah exactly. It’s contradicting
Exactly. There was always the same type of discussions WNRS offers in real life. In fact more. The issue is that all of these social concepts were transferred to social media and the proportions of people encouraging these conversations is lower in social media then in real life, hence why nobody even heard of WNRS other then Alexa. The fact that merely one page on IG exists isn’t enough to make up the burden of less communication over the past decade as our social lives have been transferred from being almost entirely in real life to being majority wise online
that's a sweeping generalization girl
We don't but its useful and convenient
I thought it was a card game?
they should’ve talked about child predators on social media! that’s a big thing. also 30k-40k a month?! it’s really sad to know that ‘influencers’ get paid more than doctors.
It’s not the teens fault. It’s the system. It’s not the teens who decide how much they get paid. Blame the way the world is, blame governments for deciding that doctors only get a certain amount.
capitalism bro
Yea but u also gotta keep in mind how short fame lasts..u can go viral and itll last for a few months but as soon as ur irrelevant or cancelled u lost so much money over such a short period of time..its not a very reliable career unlike doctors and most other jobs
@101 Influences make a lot of money because of their popularity, they make a lot of money for other companies, that's why they deserve the money they make.
@@dib327 doesnt change the fact that its sad that life savers who spend so many years in school get paid less than teens who are popular

i’m 24. ive been on social media since i was about 10. it ruined my brain. it ruined the way i see myself. i understand alex and the tik tok girl, but they’re deluded. it will wear you down eventually. their brains are developing. as there is positives, there is a lot of negatives. emma is extremely well spoken and emotionally intelligent for her age. i want to give emi the biggest hug. it tough out there. i’ve deleted my insta this year after being disgusted my screen time was 7+ hours every day during quarintine. my spirit feels lighter and my mind is clearer.
Yeah, I stopped going on TikTok when I saw that I was spending 4 or 5 hours on it everyday during the Spring. I would just spend my whole afternoon just scrolling thru TikTok. Eventually I was like “why am I wasting my time? Do I really wanna spend my whole summer on this?”
Yeah me too, my trigger point was Twitter, like a war-zone in a virtual society and then when you go outside you are lost... then I quitted
I had breakdown because of twitter. literally gave me social awkwardness. because it's such a rabbit hole and as a kid, 7 yrs ago, you don't know what kind of "community" you're falling into and you can't turn back because you lose followers. never going back
