    • @isisvda
      @isisvda 3 ปีที่แล้ว +110

      I definitely agree with you, but I do think that it was a way to show support for people who didn’t really know what else they could do. For example: I posted the black screen too (when I learned why people found it pretentious I deleted it), it was in the middle of the pandemic and the advice was to not travel unless absolutely necessary. Unfortunately all the BLM protests where in the big cities and I was far away from those. It was difficult for me because I really really wanted to do something for BLM but I just couldn’t. The black screen was a way that I showed my support. Nevertheless, I completely understand your point of view!

      @@isisvda it’s the fact that people posted black squares and said “i hear you...” yet haven’t spoken, donated, petitioned, posted, etc. since then. at that point you did it as an aesthetic. not knowing what to do is too easy to say when the internet is always at your disposal, it’s about actually wanting to use those tools and change the narrative. also i do understand that people can do these things off social media and not have to post about it, and that’s totally okay. but again, there is no excuse to post a black square and not follow up with some sort of education/activism.

    "Before social media I just thought I was a masculine girl"- I don't know about this person's case but sometimes I feel like this is actually one of the most detrimental parts of social media. People thinking they must be trans because they don't fit stereotypes. Social media shouldn't be your source of information on such topics. If you think you might be trans you should go to a doctor and get diagnosed with gender dysphoria, not believe some random people on the internet.

    • @somewhereinspace2166
      @somewhereinspace2166 ปีที่แล้ว +191

      I follow Alex and he's definitely a real trans guy but I agree on the overall point. Being trans has honestly become an internet trend and that's why we have so many detransitioners who end up dissing the community later. These days you don't need to see a doctor for evaluation before medically transitioning, and that's a problem. Even saying that you need Gender Dysphoria to be trans will get you cancelled these days. So people transition on a whim hoping that they'll be 'hip' and it will solve all their problems only to find out shortly later that they ruined their life. You don't even really get clout for it anymore because just about every kid claims to be trans or queer now. The whole mess of it all is just very sad. There's nothing wrong with being trans, but the glorification of it is toxic. It's a very difficult life to lead, even for those who do suffer from dysphoria and actually are transgender. Regret is a whole nother' layer for those who transitioned without dysphoria.

      For a lot of gay and trans people the internet provides us with a lot of freedom and information that we don't normally get in the outside world due to the danger of homophobia. You can go to a random doctor, but you don't know if they are safe or not for you. But with social media we can share our experiences and help eachother find doctors that are accommodating.
      I truly believe the only reason that we have more resources today is because we found eachother through the internet and were able to form a community far beyond the gay bars.

    I love that there's discussion about all of this and that so many people are able to see that their own social media use hurt themselves much more than it was helpful, but as someone that grew up in a very small town with horrid neighbors, a school full of people that didn't care to talk to me, I'm thankful I got into TH-cam at such a young age since it gave me a way to actually feel connected and find lots of great friends that I never would have otherwise.

    As someone has been on TH-cam almost my whole life, social media should most definitely be restricted to children under 13. The appropriation of adult habits in the youth is getting out of hand. I first discovered Nicki Minaj and Lady Gaga when I was a TODDLER. I remember first watching the Anaconda video when I was like 5... And there are other things a child of my age should have not been watching. And YT at the time did not really have demonetization or as many restrictions. My parents also didn't enforce YT kids on me as a child so some videos were literally just p()rn anddd. Unfortunately I was exposed to that. Nobody knows this. I share more things on the internet than I do with my own family because I have grown up on it and my brain has completely saturated it. When TikTok got famous that didn't help either. I have probably spent a total of a year of my life on the internet and devices. Parents. Please protect your children.

    Proud to say the only social media I have now is TH-cam. I was a social media addict and sold my body, met the worst most harmful people, and suffered so much emotional damage. I deleted all of it last year during PHP (treatment facility) and will NEVER look back. I am 19.
