Social media is extremely toxic. The internet used to be a fun and exciting way to escape from reality, now reality is the best new escape from the internet.
My word. Social media used to be my escape from reality. But social media has become SUPER and I mean SUPER toxic, that reality doesn’t seem like a bad place anymore.
That's so true. Like when social media was first a thing I used it to escape from my harsh teenage years with a single parent household. But now I even have to force myself to go outside for exercise or socializing. With Covid its even worse now, cause the situation forced me to be isolated longer. So I see where you coming from.
Tiktok is extremely toxic. You'll often see hundreds of people cyberbullying a single person with the minority of people trying to correct them and it's sad :/
I absolutely agree with you, nowadays someone can be going through a hard time whether it may be a loss, discrimination, disability, etc, the majority of people on social media have no empathy whatsoever and treat them like a joke and it's not even funny. Social media is also damaging them and they can barely pay attention to anything in general.
when emi brought up how people were performative during the blm movement and how the black squares were a product of that......... finally someone called it out
I definitely agree with you, but I do think that it was a way to show support for people who didn’t really know what else they could do. For example: I posted the black screen too (when I learned why people found it pretentious I deleted it), it was in the middle of the pandemic and the advice was to not travel unless absolutely necessary. Unfortunately all the BLM protests where in the big cities and I was far away from those. It was difficult for me because I really really wanted to do something for BLM but I just couldn’t. The black screen was a way that I showed my support. Nevertheless, I completely understand your point of view!
@@isisvda it’s the fact that people posted black squares and said “i hear you...” yet haven’t spoken, donated, petitioned, posted, etc. since then. at that point you did it as an aesthetic. not knowing what to do is too easy to say when the internet is always at your disposal, it’s about actually wanting to use those tools and change the narrative. also i do understand that people can do these things off social media and not have to post about it, and that’s totally okay. but again, there is no excuse to post a black square and not follow up with some sort of education/activism.
@@alw_9911 totally agree. I myself constantly advocates on social media and I took a bigger step when I went to a protest in my city. Anyone can post a black screen but that doesn’t mean your intentions are genuine,

There are so many studies that prove social media causes depression and anxiety, and it ruins our attention span. Yes it depends how you use it, but 99% of people use it in a way that makes their life worse in some aspect.
school does all of that stuff more than social media yet nobody talks about it. social media made me realize who i was and made me feel valid. you know what did the opposite? school.

@@luciadawnwater272 i agree but I also agree with the comment above. I feel like in general we are getting very limited in life and its almost like everything is planned out since birth. can you stop with the social media = mental illness narrative? yes it’s harmful but to directly list it as a cause is ridiculously invalidating to people with mental illness. it’s a different thing to have anxiety related to social media and to say it causes it
This is hard to watch it really is. The one girl Emi is pouring her heart out over her experiences about her dance class and the one guy responds by saying "yeah tumblr is pretty bad I guess". And then they literally roll their eyes and smirk when asked if kids under 13 shouldnt be allowed. There's a very key difference between the 2 groups here, I know which group I would want to be friends with I don't know about you guys.
I noticed that too when Alex and Alexa were the only 2 who didn't go sit. I did see them laugh when Emi was talking about her experience. I think that they out of everyone there had the most amount of followers, and because of that made them think in that way if it makes sense.
Y'all are assuming a lot tho. You don't know whether they were laughing about Emi or just talking about something else entirely, lets not make things negative out of nowhere.
I think I'm missing something....there was the should kids under 13 have social media question...then there is this research information talk...I'm not sure how well a 6-12 will understand that..they don't get enough credit but they are also just cogs in the wheel...so who cares..defiantly not older people who are benefiting

I can not put into words how wrong this truly is. I tried and ended up on a rant I’m sure no one wants to listen to. I’ll just say I’m objectively pretty and have gotten much worse bc I am pretty but it’s not from the girls or women it’s the men. You become nothing more than an object that can never be perfect to them all the while they rape you and remind you of how close you were but not quite there. I’ve had a lifetime of backlash from so many different guys it makes my head spin. Everyone is so obsessed with perfection the uglier I try to look the easier my life gets and the less hate I receive. I’m sure what she has is hard I’m not downplaying that but your statement is ignorant
I think it’s because adults are trying to get something out of the conversation (as in be proven right and stuff) whilst these kids are actually trying to discuss the issues with social media
Killer D im sure there’s also some sort of agreement that they all make to be civil and have an actual discussion, rather than argue. this is what debates should be like, and im sure the argument mentality does come into play and you get into the “im right youre wrong stage” but i would assume the people filiming acted as moderators and also cut parts where they talked over each other
When she said “It’s really scary to see my friends disconnect with me and connect with these people they’ve never met” that hit me because a lot of the time I’ll be on FaceTime/ on the phone with friends and do this but never saw it this way and it’s scary how normalised this has become and a lot of things you realise you miss as a result.
I am not the type of person to facetime/videocall, and I've been calling a lot of my friends lately... most of them answer other calls, scroll through instagram, play games, etc when I'm on a call with them... and it's insane to me. They don't see a problem with it, not even just how it can be rude, but really how disgusting it is. I cannot believe that's normal. I cannot believe it. If they do those things and I ask them to and they won't stop, I refuse to call them. It's disappointing that's what most people do nowadays.
Same... I try to finish my schoolwork early so I can catch up with my friends if I go to see them they’ll be on there phones scrolling through insta or snapping random boys, and I kinda take that personally like they don’t wanna hang out w/ me or something, but honestly it’s there problem if they think snapping and scrolling is more important than our friendship... let it be that way then (they prolly don’t even need me anyway) but the thing is I feel like I couldn’t live without them but they could live without me.....
Lmao exactly as people grow older they won’t care to be in these online societies. There’s a shelf life on being an influencer unless you can recreate yourself
"Before social media I just thought I was a masculine girl"- I don't know about this person's case but sometimes I feel like this is actually one of the most detrimental parts of social media. People thinking they must be trans because they don't fit stereotypes. Social media shouldn't be your source of information on such topics. If you think you might be trans you should go to a doctor and get diagnosed with gender dysphoria, not believe some random people on the internet.
I follow Alex and he's definitely a real trans guy but I agree on the overall point. Being trans has honestly become an internet trend and that's why we have so many detransitioners who end up dissing the community later. These days you don't need to see a doctor for evaluation before medically transitioning, and that's a problem. Even saying that you need Gender Dysphoria to be trans will get you cancelled these days. So people transition on a whim hoping that they'll be 'hip' and it will solve all their problems only to find out shortly later that they ruined their life. You don't even really get clout for it anymore because just about every kid claims to be trans or queer now. The whole mess of it all is just very sad. There's nothing wrong with being trans, but the glorification of it is toxic. It's a very difficult life to lead, even for those who do suffer from dysphoria and actually are transgender. Regret is a whole nother' layer for those who transitioned without dysphoria.
For a lot of gay and trans people the internet provides us with a lot of freedom and information that we don't normally get in the outside world due to the danger of homophobia. You can go to a random doctor, but you don't know if they are safe or not for you. But with social media we can share our experiences and help eachother find doctors that are accommodating. I truly believe the only reason that we have more resources today is because we found eachother through the internet and were able to form a community far beyond the gay bars.
It's the opposite for me, I used to think I was trans because of the Internet but I came to my senses and realized I'm actually just a masculine girl lol
@Edgar Gomez, I don't think it's his last name; it sounded to me like he was simply emphasizing that there is indeed the "s" at the end of his first name.

100% agree. even 13 is way too young even. those are kids. they don't know when to stop, when to block someone, if someone is a predator, what that person really looks like, it's just so dangerous. i don't even think kids should have phones unless it is for calling parents like just a cell phone. makes me really terrified for the future generation
I was also on the internet when I was younger but I’ve never experienced any of those things. The internet teaches a lot of things, such as English for example. I think that I’m very lucky to have a better experience on the internet than most people. I’m grateful
Honestly, I agree. As a 11 year old, I'm exposed to things that I'm too young to know about. Now, I have a more of an advanced brain due social media. Luckily, I don't get sexual or predatory messages like you did. Even kids in my class have Discord, Instagram, Snapchat, Tiktok, Facebook, and have the newest I-phones. Not to mention, wear clothes that aren't for their age. And are also completely different from years ago. Such as crop tops, extremely short shorts, scrunchies, and even makeup!! To remind you, these kids that I'm talking about are ages 10-14!!! We also know about aesthetics like cottagecore, vintage, vaporware, ect. In 5th grade, we were doing a project in which we had to present ourselves. It would be later showed to the whole grade at the last day of school. One girl in my class asked someone to put an aesthetic background for the project since she didn't know how to. I know this might sound hypocritical, but I hate children in our generation. I doubt we can change it which is the unfortunate part, sadly...
@@ravenpotter4004 But fortunately I know how to do all these things for my surprising age. This doesn't apply to everyone my age though, which is worrying.
This is coming from a 16 year old teenage girl - I deleted all of my social media accounts, except TH-cam. I couldn't be happier and simply don't think that social media is necessary. I feel more confident since then...
i did it before and i felt so good but then my friends were like annoyed i wasn’t on it (it was only for a week) and like now if i do again i feel like they’ll just be annoyed but i’m honestly considering it
i feel for Emi. she’s so sweet and beautiful but hate in the world has attacked her out of insecurity and anger. i see so much love and potential in her, and i agree that tiktok is absolutely SO toxic. however, i believe that other forms of social media can be used positively
“I’m afraid If I search for that validation, I’m not going to find it” ooof that hit hard. I think so many people feel this way. I just want to hug her and I hope she realizes she’s valid no matter what anyone else thinks! ❤️
I wish they’d talked more about how perceived levels of attractiveness shape your social media experience. I’m sure Alexa works very hard on her page but she’s also conventionally attractive by society’s standards and that plays a part in following and the kinds of community that you get
Yes! Especially after TikTok was caught pushing conventionally attractive people in their algorithm. People who are conventionally attractive have it more easier than somebody who is not in social media
No, its the content too. There's alot of people who aren't good looking some don't even show their face. And create good content and have alot of followers. BUT if someone is attractive, and just dances, then ofcourse people will go with the attractive person because they want to SEE more of that attractive person. If 2 people did the same thing, just 1 is more attractive then the other, the attractive person will get selected.
yes. I once was on social media (TikTok, snapchat, insta) but just because I deleted them all and am against their usage doesn’t mean I’m suddenly incompetent
yeah, also how they were laughing about how tiktok is easy to enjoy and that it’s because they have short attention spans. tiktok legitimately is the thing causing their attention spans to shorten, they are so used to the instant dopamine rush that comes from those 15-60 second videos that their brains arent able to enjoy long-term enjoyment/activities such as reading a book or having an actual real life hobby for entertainment. social media and mindless scrolling pretty much rots their brains in that way.
literally, theyre assuming they dont know what they talk about even thought the anti social media kids definately know what tbey are talking about more than the pro social media ones, they think they know what theyre talkjng about but they need to reasses that.
Imo, TikTok can be fun. I rarely use it, but when I do, sometimes it is fun. Ofc, as with other social media, a lot of bad content exist. Actual bad content, not the cringy content.

Regret is a whole nother' layer for those who transitioned without dysphoria.
exactly! you really get it
For a lot of gay and trans people the internet provides us with a lot of freedom and information that we don't normally get in the outside world due to the danger of homophobia. You can go to a random doctor, but you don't know if they are safe or not for you. But with social media we can share our experiences and help eachother find doctors that are accommodating.
I truly believe the only reason that we have more resources today is because we found eachother through the internet and were able to form a community far beyond the gay bars.
It's the opposite for me, I used to think I was trans because of the Internet but I came to my senses and realized I'm actually just a masculine girl lol
gender dysphoria doesn't automatically mean that youre trans though

I've had periods where I'd go months never using it. My routine and feelings remained relatively the same. Not saying some people don't benefit from deletion, just that it doesn't effect everyone.
To be fair I only use like 2ish social medias.
LITERALLY!! I got my phone taken for a few months and when I got it back I ended up deleting my TikTok account and instagram main. It was the best thing ever, I get so much more work done and I’m not constantly comparing myself to other girls nor seeing people who I don’t really care for posts. notice how the only ones who said that social media doesn’t make you anti social are the big creators with PLATFORMS 🤨
Yeah. It’s a detriment to the social skills of a lot of ACTUAL teens. Online friendships and relationships don’t even come close to the real thing, even over FaceTime calls you aren’t developing crucial social skills in the way you normally would.
I have no platform. Yes i’m anti-social but I have been since before i was on social media. It depends on the person. I actually find it easier to communicate with people online. I wouldn’t communicate if I didn’t do it online first. Social media doesn’t forced u to be antisocial if anything it has helped me be more social. Who cares if it’s through a screen? okay correct me if i’m wrong. i’ve only ever heard someone say social media made them more confident, if they have more followers than the average. i’ve never heard someone who just has a normal account say it’s made them more confident. the popularity is what makes you more confident and that’s sad; it’s shouldn’t be that way. you shouldn’t base your confidence off of your audience, you should base it off of yourself. work on self love. 💜

I have a normal account and it's made me more confident. Having access to social media allowed me to educate myself on topics ranging from body positivity to history and politics, and ultimately has allowed me to become smarter and more rational, hence increasing my faith in myself, and therefore my confidence. Also, posting online makes me feel happier and more secure regardless of the levels of engagement.

children really shouldn't be on the internet. i was on the internet when i was a child and i saw so many things i shouldn't have. creepy strangers trying to get my information or sending me sexual messages or photos. posts ruining my body image. children just don't need that. and even young toddlers nowadays are GLUED to phones, it's really sad. they should be playing with toys and learning the alphabet and learning colors and animals and shapes, but instead their eyes are stuck to a cell phone. it's depressing honestly.
100% agree. even 13 is way too young even. those are kids. they don't know when to stop, when to block someone, if someone is a predator, what that person really looks like, it's just so dangerous. i don't even think kids should have phones unless it is for calling parents like just a cell phone. makes me really terrified for the future generation

In 5th grade, we were doing a project in which we had to present ourselves. It would be later showed to the whole grade at the last day of school.
People who are conventionally attractive have it more easier than somebody who is not in social media
exactly
great point
I agree 100%
No, its the content too. There's alot of people who aren't good looking some don't even show their face. And create good content and have alot of followers. BUT if someone is attractive, and just dances, then ofcourse people will go with the attractive person because they want to SEE more of that attractive person. If 2 people did the same thing, just 1 is more attractive then the other, the attractive person will get selected.
Disturbing that the pro social kids assume that the anti social media kids just don't understand how to use social media. Lot of ego with those kids.
yes. I once was on social media (TikTok, snapchat, insta) but just because I deleted them all and am against their usage doesn’t mean I’m suddenly incompetent
True there's my one friend who is a pro social kid I told her to barely use social media she said that's very bad you must use sm 😂 I said ok idc
yeah, also how they were laughing about how tiktok is easy to enjoy and that it’s because they have short attention spans. tiktok legitimately is the thing causing their attention spans to shorten, they are so used to the instant dopamine rush that comes from those 15-60 second videos that their brains arent able to enjoy long-term enjoyment/activities such as reading a book or having an actual real life hobby for entertainment. social media and mindless scrolling pretty much rots their brains in that way.
literally, theyre assuming they dont know what they talk about even thought the anti social media kids definately know what tbey are talking about more than the pro social media ones, they think they know what theyre talkjng about but they need to reasses that.
I agree. When it comes to stuff like social media, not liking it doesn't mean that one doesn't understand it. It just doesn't suit them.
TikTok is by far the most manipulative and addicting social media platform, I really don’t understand why it’s so widely accepted/consumed.
Imo, TikTok can be fun. I rarely use it, but when I do, sometimes it is fun. Ofc, as with other social media, a lot of bad content exist. Actual bad content, not the cringy content.
Phillips felt the most genuine to me, he was not sided to one idea, just like most of us
I love an open-minded person who isn't stuck in their thoughts. Learn the facts and go from there lol
