Thurston and Lee were voted the 33rd and 34th best guitarists of all time by Rolling Stone. Make of that what you will, but I am sure glad Thurston does what he does.
Would the tuning have any appreciable effect? This reminds me of Nigel Tufnel playing the guitar by rubbing a violin across his guitar, then interrupting himself to tune the violin.
true, but they had plenty of shitty choices the first time too. I mean, David Gilmour in the 70s. that's criminal. Kurt Cobain was put higher than him. I can agree that they had just as much, if not more, crappy choices in the new one too
From a technical standpoint, absolutely not. Jimi played much more mechanically challenging stuff than Thurston, who's always been a "more with less" kind of guitarist (much early SY is just an open tuning being strummed with some added noises and maybe half a chord change). Plus, like Thurston, he had a real knack for exploring sounds in and of themselves (controlled feedback, new effects sounds like the Octavia, etc). As for the music they play, it's so different as to be an impossible comparison. Jimi played Blues-driven Acid Rock, Thurston plays Drone and Minimalism-influenced Soundscape Rock. They're totally different players and I love both for entirely different reasons. It's like saying a violinist is better than a pianist, they don't serve the same roles.
The thing is I don't think he is trying to make music, but then I don't understand why he is holding a guitar just grab some exposed electrical wires if you want to make random arbitrary noise.
Still waiting for him to actually "play guitar". It's said that in art and music that you must know the rules before you can break them. I'm not convinced Thurston actually learned the rules.
This shit cool as hell idk what you're on about. If people like him weren't willing to push boundries, then more popular artists would probably have never come up with some of these techniques.
Thurston Moore created some of the most seminal and acclaimed alt rock and indie recordings ever, as well as inspiring other seminal groups like My Bloody Valentine. If he doesn’t “know the rules” clearly he doesn’t need them That said, he’s always had a killer sense of rhythm and wrote so many great riffs. I think he better technique than he’s given credit for
Please, do not say that this guy "knows exactly what he is doing." It is a huge disgrace when this guy gets put on stage with some of the great improvisers and noise makers. This is absolute bullshit.
aethertornado 1. you don't have to know anything 2. everyone is welcome to their opinion 3. his outlook on art alone makes him a welcome addition to that stage let alone what he has accomplished musically in his life...
“Some of the great improvisers and noise makers” How can you criticize him for “not knowing” how to make noise and improvise when he’s literally doing exactly what that entails

@RolodexEnigma I don't know what list you're looking at, but the one I saw had Thurston at 34 and Lee at 33.
it's like scratching nails to the blackboard.
I prefer him to Steve Vai;)
An abrupt ending.

Man I got it right away, but I spend too much time in modern art galleries.

File under "more purist about what is noise than thou..." every scene gets these guys, even the scenes that are about ignoring these guys.
