I believe SY used a Ludwig Phase II. The Blue Dinosaur Interstellar Watermelon is inspired by the Ludwig. EHX's Talking Machine and the EQD Interstellar Orbiter (unrelated to the Watermelon) also do the yoy-yoy-yoy sound. Some other wahs and phasers do this, but those are probably the 3 best, if someone was wanting to nail a cover down.
"An obscure pedal you can't buy..." Why can't it be bought? They've been on Reverb for years. How is the GG Rendezvous better at yoy-yoy? Let's see you explain how its yoy-yoy is the best yoy-yoy.
Badass man. Sonic Youth have all their tunings to most of their songs on their webpage too. Even though they split up or whatever. Great job figuring all of this out.
Apparently, an incredibly creative spouse, lovely child, and the world as your oyster are still not enough to keep the earth turning. Stick with the alternate tunings, man, they won’t let you down.
Mary Chain is easy (at least the classic "Psychocandy" sound). Shin-Ei Fuzz/Wah pedal into a cranked spring reverb. Step on the wah into toe-down position when needed for extra noise. Use semi-hollow guitars.
as someone not familiar with the band, im interested as to how their live shows would go. either five minutes between each song just to tune or like 10+ guitars on deck
They used to have a rack with guitars tuned to a lot of songs. I have seen them 7 times. Lee and Thurston always had a big rack with like 20 guitars pre-tuned. Alot of songs share the same tunings.
Thank you, Thank you, Thank you, Kim Gordon, Steve Shelley, Lee Ranaldo, and Thurston Moore for making this world bearable, and interpreting it in a way that makes sense to my soul. Life is better with more GABDEG. Hey, CME, how about selling some more strings, and sharing what the best gauges are for some of these tunings.
Sonic Youth website gear page on specific guitars notes exactly what string gages they used for specific tunings... be prepared to buy them in bulk! ;)
Andrew Pappas use differnet instruments strings you can go as heavy as youd like. Ever seen jack white talk about it in that deleted scene from it might get loud? He talk about just finding a guage so heavy you basically cant play it. Really fun too gets a cook sound
The biggest aspect of their tunings is unison strings. Produces that chorus effect. A simple tuning that is easy to start with is go to drop D and tune the 2nd and 3rd strings both to 'A'. This D-A-D A-A-D. SY doesn't use this but it is an easy way to get the unison sounds
Did not know they used all these tunings how do they keep it all straight? My brother was even more out there- he played guitars with like 19 notes to the octave & stuff
The Beatles Video 59 danelectro (any guitar with lipstick pick ups), Clean, Fender Amp Holy grail Reverb, Vibrato pedal. That will emulate it near perfectly of his Rock N Roll Night, 2, and Salad Day Era tones.
if you watch the rig tour video with Daniel Johnson who works for him, you can see his pedals and guitars and amps i know he uses: EHX Big Muff Boss OC3 Boss PH3 Boss PS5 Boss TR2 MXR Ten Band EQ a fuzz wah i think that's called the Nu-Wa fuzz EHX Q Tron Earthquaker Devices Gloven hoof Earthquaker Devices Tone Job Earthquaker Devices Terminal and there's some other pedals too but i don't remember what they were
Not a bad attempt... However I think on Daydream Nation I think maybe only Lee may have used a dedicated chorus effect pedal. Thurston's guitar sounds like a post-mix chorus effect, probably something Nick Sansano added as live Thurston never was known to use a chorus (until very recently when I noticed he was using a tc electronics mini chorus pedal with his "solo" band). The band's website is where to go to find all of their tunings, and gear. Its no secret what they were using gear-wise from 1994/5-ish thru to 2009-ish. Alot of their pedals are not exactly rare, with a few exceptions (Ludwig Synthesizer used to get that phasing wah wah sound on The Diamond Sea and both Lee and Thurston using Mutron effects: wah/vol and the bi-phaser). I think the Reverb folks could've used a few of the more exact pedals used as noted on the SY website...

Edit: don't get me wrong, I absolutely adore the production, just some context I suppose
You can tell a real sonic youth fan worked hard on this
Their main effect was their tunings.
I love your video too!
I agree, and thank you for your awesome videos.
And the drum sticks lol.
do more ween covers

I can trust you better than this video!!
from japanese young man who loves 80/90s alternative guitar rock musics and your videos.
Those tunings are a massive "Fuck You" to my guitar string budget.
What’s funny is that most of their stuff they used was just pawn shop junk and anything they found cool 😹
The phaser on Diamond Sea needs to be much more yoyoyoyoyo
I believe SY used a Ludwig Phase II. The Blue Dinosaur Interstellar Watermelon is inspired by the Ludwig. EHX's Talking Machine and the EQD Interstellar Orbiter (unrelated to the Watermelon) also do the yoy-yoy-yoy sound. Some other wahs and phasers do this, but those are probably the 3 best, if someone was wanting to nail a cover down.
The EQD Interstellar Orbiter is also pretty decent for Diamond Sea. Check it out: th-cam.com/video/L8yGmL2s7Ys/w-d-xo.htmlm32s
I'm sure you're convinced of that, because a $600 yoy-yoy has to be better than a $300 or $200 yoy-yoy.
"An obscure pedal you can't buy..." Why can't it be bought? They've been on Reverb for years. How is the GG Rendezvous better at yoy-yoy? Let's see you explain how its yoy-yoy is the best yoy-yoy.
Yep, I was going to say Interstellar Orbiter as well.

They have a million guitars in different tunings already prepares
Imagine being their guitar tech...
Thurston Moore and Lee Ronaldo have put out amazing stuff since they broke up. Steve Shelly, too. He's an amazing drummer and has played with both.
They used to have a rack with guitars tuned to a lot of songs. I have seen them 7 times. Lee and Thurston always had a big rack with like 20 guitars pre-tuned. Alot of songs share the same tunings.
Early on, 5 minutes between songs. Later when they had more guitars, the latter.
less chorus.
more drumsticks.
And, occasionally, baseball bats
I know what you mean. Hats off, however, to Steve Shelley, who’s been massively underrated as a percussionist. He’s awesome.

sonic youth guitar tunings are always mystery to me
Sonic Youth is a cool band but I've always wondered how the hell they get those weird tunings without breaking a string?
Andrew Pappas probably just reallllly heavy guages. Like 14s at least
Andrew Pappas they used different gauges of strings probably
you won't EVER break a string if you know how to string you guitar correctly. you only break'em if you string it wrong.
TheAmazingMeagher 14s? Wow, and I thought Stevie Ray Vaughan used heavy strings.. The heaviest gauge I have are 11s

Up
Most of the tones would be the same thing. That being said, still up for it.
Just buy a chorus pedal
Buy a guitar with a single coil in the neck, and use that with a chorus pedal with the mix knob all the way up on the clean channel of your amp
The Beatles Video 59 danelectro (any guitar with lipstick pick ups), Clean, Fender Amp Holy grail Reverb, Vibrato pedal. That will emulate it near perfectly of his Rock N Roll Night, 2, and Salad Day Era tones.

EHX Q Tron
Earthquaker Devices Gloven hoof
