It’s been almost 2 years since you posted this video and I told myself several months ago after I started watching your channel that I would eventually buy a bottle of green chartreuse and make the famous last word and when I did I would rewatch this video and sip it with the one and only Anders & Az. So cheers to an amazing video and yet another beautiful cocktail! Thank you 🖤
I am enjoying a Czech version of the Last Word called Larkwood, using Becherovka herbal liqueur instead of Chartreuse. Becherovka is a yellowish transparent liqueur, with bold ginger and gentian flavours. It's excellent (of course with the lemon juice toned down to 5 ml and gin toned up to 40 ml)!
While traveling I finally found a bar that had chartreuse and was able to try this drink after 2 years of searching. Then went down the street and found a bottle of chartreuse at a liquor store. Happy days!!
I have just grabbed a bottle of green chartreuse and made this cocktail. It is so wonderful, refreshing, with a lot of herbs and a hint of sweetness and a little bit of tartness. If you have a bad day as I have just had, make this cocktail and be awesome. Love it!! Keep up the good work Anders 💪💪💪
I was so excited to try this. Used it as an excuse to finally add maraschino to the bar cart. However, for my pallet this came across too sweet. My wife absolutely loves it, so I'll keep making them. But as always it's fun to try a new cocktail recipe!
This is our favorite cocktail and we use 1 oz per. Then we float Laphroaig (about 1/8 oz) on top which adds a smoky flavor. I have not added the cherry before but will try it. Make a couple right now.
I find that the Botanist is a really good gin for this drink, probably my favorite, because it compliments the Chartreuse's herbaceousness. If you want another good gin alternative, try Roku to really compliment the maraschino.
It was hard to find Green Chartreuse but did. Also tried to find a substitute and ended up grabbing the Dolin veritable genepy which I think is closer to yellow Chartreuse. Definitely liked it better with the substitute but enjoyed the kick of the green chartreuse
Very late weighing in, but I just wanted to say I really enjoyed this one. Anders at his peak, in rare form (well, not rare for him)... He's funny, endearing and knows what he's doing. Its a great drink but its also fun to watch. I would watch this one over and over...great.
Anders has the final word on the Last Word. A loving punch in the face! I'm co-opting this line. Thank you both again for giving me a reason to continue today.😘
A lovely drink for the connoiseurs out there. The Last Word is like the big brother of Aviation - kinda similar built but vastly different taste. Also both drinks are much more costly than your regular cocktail.
I can hardly think of any cocktail made at home as being expensive. Where I live, you’re going to pay $14-16 plus tax and tip for this drink. These three bottles will run you $160. I can make a heck of a lot more than ten of them with that gin, Lucado, and chartreuee. As in, with these three 750ml bottles, with spillage, I can make 30 of them. $5 apiece. Is that math right? Or have I had too many Last Words tonight?
So, since I haven’t been able to find Green Chartreuse in forever… I got some stuff called VER Liqueur and made a Last Word with it. Gotta say… VERY nice! I don’t know what a Last Word tastes like with Green chartreuse… but this tastes really good!
I have the Luxardo Maraschino Cherries and use only those!! They are so delish and are perfect for cocktails. You use high quality ingredients in your drinks - all the way! I have see YT channels post videos of great drinks mixed but the posters always comment on how the low cost (economic) ingredients taste the same after drinks are mixed. I tend to disagree. It is the same with cooking.
The Last Word is maybe the most interesting cocktail I have ever tasted. As you know, there is a big Chartreuse shortage. I go to big box liquor store website, they say Genepy is good substitute and in stock. I go to customer service and no Genepy to be found. The lady asks what for? She says we just got this one bottle of Chartreususe for $75. So I mixed the Last Word, and it was a gin slammer. In my senior years, I don't throw down that much liquor anymore. But we are serving them to guests from Vietnam. And it should be a very interesting conversation piece.
I imagine this drink with all the herbal sweetness would taste great in a tropical/tiki version.... Perhaps over some crushed ice, with mint (to build on that herbal), perhaps a couple of grenadine drops for color... Or a sour version (w/ egg white)... So many options.
Love this cocktail but I have a variation if Green Chartreuse is hard to come by. Replace it with 1/4 oz Campari and 1/4 oz maple syrup, lemon twist for garnish. Not the same drink, it’s pink for a start but very nice nonetheless. I call it the Lost World
I love watching these videos. Anders is precious, charming, and humble. But I'd never try to make this cocktail at home. Not because I can't; it's childishly simple. But I don't have all of those ingredients at home, and I'd never go out to buy them just to make a cocktail. A cocktail like this is the perfect justification for the existence of cocktail bars with friendly, experienced bartenders. Visit one today.
So I found out today that Green Chartreuse is not currently available; at least around here in the Portland area...dang supply chain issues, eh? A locally-made liqueur was recommended, and actually was quite nice. Then I decided to experiment a bit since the 1-1-1-1 ratio is pretty rad to work with and came up with the Örtpirat (Herb Pirate in Swedish, roughly translated). I initially wanted to only swap out the gin with the acricole rum from the Last Word to keep it simple, but I wanted a bit more sweetness without requiring a simple, hence the Swedish Punsch. 3/4oz Rhum Agricole 3/4oz Swedish Punsch 3/4oz Maraschino Liqueur 3/4oz Lemon juice Shaken, Up, cherry on the bottom of a Nick & Nora. Delightful!
I had an absolutely Insane dream the other day and I made pretty much a huge batch of last word. I was a happy soul and added blueberries and strawberries and everyone lived happily ever after. But it was a true testament to me bartending die waaaay too long
I have been traveling to Chicago for business lately. Where do you recommend downtown for unique cocktails? I grabbed dinner at Petterino's and they had green chartreuse so I had my first - Last Word ;)
I've have a Last Word at your bar, although it has been, alas, too long. Just made a version with Genepy, since I don't have any Chartreuse. Delicious.
Oh snap!!! I totally missed the glasses. Daddy, I want the Nick and Nora!! I want them now! (I know you're too polite to say you see the resemblance.) The ultimate pro.
What gin would you recommend for this drink out of these: Amass gin, Monkey 47, Roku, Nikka Coffey, Dyfi gin pollination, Nolets dry silver? I would like to create the best version of this without having to buy all these bottles so would really appreciate your thoughts on this.
Is this one similar to the corpse reviver? Because man do I miss sitting at the bar sipping on a ward eight corpse reviver. Maybe if I'm lucky you'll add that to your list of possible videos.
I most certainly will add that one to my list! And yes, I think you’d like this one, Farhana. There’s definitely some similarities between the two cocktails. Cheers!
Hi, Anders! It would be interesting if you'd make a video for the Dublin Minstrel too (i guess you know it) comparing that to a cocktail i made, a little twist on the Minstrel, with scotch whisky and bergamot juice (i called it The Cloudy Highlander, ahah)...a comparison like you did before, i'd like to know what you think :-)
I used Jagermeister in place of Chartreuse and Plymouth for my gin. Honestly not bad in my opinion. I’m really curious as to what others or even Anders would think of it. Recently I had my first last word at a nice cocktail bar in Boise and really loved the drink. The mouthfeel is not the same with Jager, but the herbal-ness is there.
So what would you call the prettiest cocktail? Can you make one for this series? You could even make several that you think are extra pretty and we could vote on it!
Great idea! Really good question. I’m not sure what the prettiest would be. I think it depends so much on the glassware. I love a simple looking cocktail with minimal garnish, but also enjoy a beautifully garnished tiki. Two ends of the spectrum that can both catch your eye. Now you’ve got me thinking 🤔 Thanks for the suggestion!

The magic combination. Equal parts spirit, sweet, sour and herbal
Herbal Monk Punch was the name of my band in college
Old post, but by chance are you a friend of DeSoto? Either way, got a good lol outta me.

Our favorite cocktail! It definitely packs a punch. I definitely do 1oz of all the items.
Not a spirit recommendation but I’m sat with a last word and have some 70% choc on the go - holy moly what a combo - try it, it’s super good!
I really enjoy your approach to making cocktails. Knowledge combined with humor. I subscribed of course 🙂👏🏻

100% agree, Roku is fantastic in this drink!
Great videos Anders
I made this today. Recipe looked not tasty but the cocktail was delicious. Praise Be!
These videos deserve far more views. Please keep making them!

I got chartreuse for christmas and made this. Love it!

Another great vid. Love them!
Thanks Anders. Delicious!
I just made a last word with Plantation OFTD as the base. amazing! Stick to one!
Thanks for this video. I just made it and dang its good.

Love it! Thanks, Lindsay!!

My FAVE 🍸❤
I had this last night. Delicious.
This got me to order Chartreuse this week
What gin do you recommend?
OMG that sounds fanststic!!!!!!
By far the most suggested cocktail to try green chartreuse!
I understand this drink was invented in my hometown of Detroit. It's one I can no longer have due to a bad experience with it.
These videos are fantastic
Thank you so much, Dominic!

fantastic content per usual, after watching more than a few of these vids I think I need to get some Maraschino Liqueur as it's a recurring theme.
Just picked up a bottle myself, at Anders’ recommendation!
Cheers.
Very nice!! Loved the history.
Any suggestions for a substitute until we can get Green Chartreuse again? Would you use Genepy?
Just tried this - love it!

We just got a set of Nick & Nora too! A great addition to the glassware 👍🏻😊
I like to make the classic formula, but with absinthe as base spirit. It packs a punch, delicious and dangerous.
Line em up!
Anders, you're the bomb

A lot of people don’t know but this drink was created in Detroit Michigan by a bartender who worked at the famous Detroit Athletic Club.
We were just saying that we want to purchase Nick and Nora glasses! Great video!
Thanks, Marley! Definitely get some...it's how you know you've "made it".
Glad I stumbled upon this video. Reminded me to replace the ones I had that broke

Is there a site with all your recipes ?
Omg before your joke at the end I always thought it was the last World, as in the end of the world
Hey Anders, have you tried a version of the Last Word called The Laphroaig Project? Both green and yellow Chartreuse in one drink!
Given the Chartreuse shortage, could you redo this cocktail with chartreuse alternatives.
You should create a cocktail called the Herbal Monk Punch
My wife calls this The Spicy Christmas Tree, and as a result I think we've found our new Christmas Eve tradition.
Sounds like a good way to go in my mind!

Maras-K-ino is the correct pronunciation as it is Italian :)
Chartreuse is a product of the Carthusian monks; support their contemplative vocation by buying some.

That's almost the same recipe for a Naked and Afraid just with Aperol instead of Maraschino.
How to Make a Martinez
Change the gin, better profile with the original choice- that's why it was made.
So WHY do you like the Botanist Gin with this drink? WHY??
