    I like how honest this video is. I don't think any of us viewers really minded that you postponed the video (I for my part didn't) but as a fellow creator I know how frustrating it is not being able to keep your own deadlines. So thank you for showing your very human moments as well♥️

    Once you started struggling, I started thinking, Maybe she could just recommend which is best to use on different mediums? I got teary-eyed when you admitted your frustrations, having felt similar pressures to deliver and feeling like I was coming up short. I’m so glad you had the same thought, being able to break down what works best on different papers, different paints, etc. Your videos are always a joy to watch, and this one weirdly hit me in the heart (in a good way) ❤️

      I was thinking the same thing, it might be good to have a “what pens best for each surface”, although I know the idea is so that people esp newbies don’t have to go out and spend a lot on buying lots of pens. But I think this is a good idea for artists a bit further along in their journey

    I was thinking there probably isn't "one white pen" that works on everything. It's great you found one that works well on most things, but I will likely still have several white pens to use on different surfaces or mediums. Still, it's really interesting to see how some reacted to the different surfaces. Thanks for grinding this out for us.

    (FOR WATERCOLOR ARTISTS!!!) My favorite actually is the Dr.PH Martin ink white! It works better than any other paint pen or gel pen when using it overtop watercolor pieces. All the other stuff tends to reactivate the paint underneath and you never get a perfect opaque white, HOWEVER the Ink white does not reactivate the paint! I usually use it with a dip pen and it’s incredible ! Just a tip for anyone who struggles to find White ink for Watercolor pieces that will STAY white!!!💖💖💖

    • @SarahRenaeClark
      @SarahRenaeClark  ปีที่แล้ว +34

      Yes! It stayed a true white above all the other pens. It’s such a shame it reacted with the pencils.

    • @imaginaryguide1895

      This is what I use (the Bleed Proof White, specifically). I've found it looks clumpy/feels heavy when compared to the watercolor underneath it, but that might just be the nature of whites that are that white. It also separated from its solivant a bit, like unstirred yogurt.

    I discovered Posca pens a while ago and have been using them a lot, mostly to paint on the cover of my sketchbooks. White poscas are a safe choice, but you're right, the smaller sizes really somehow don't hold up to the larger ones

    • @jobr380
      @jobr380 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      Surprisingly enough my small white posca works better than my large one. I feel like there are a lot of manufacturing irregularities with all of these white pens and you gotta buy a few to have a good one which sucks.

    • @Nic0Dr4ws

      There ok, the problem I run into is that it just soaks into the paper too well ig because it ends up being clearish and not matte

      I also love Posca BUT have had a handful of times when it unexpectedly spit out a big white blob which ruined my painting. If anyone knows a way to ensure that doesn't happen, I'd be back to Posca in a heartbeat, but for now I don't trust them.

  • @JayofallTrades

    I love how you tested them all with dedication and not letting them defeat you. I actually have a signo and I find it scratches my art. I prefer using a white paint pen for highlights. I love the posca fine point.

    The correction pens we used in school covered pen ink mistakes very well and stayed stark white. I loved using the Pentel with metal tips, they were great for small details and should work on oil or wax pencils easily including different surfaces and types of paper. You should try that too.

    • @riverAmazonNZ
      @riverAmazonNZ ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Yes, the metal tip ones! Pentel fine point correction pen. An amazing smooth white. You have to frequently clean the tip but it’s not a problem.

    I struggled to find a really good, opaque white pen as well for my mixed media art. My usual go to gel pen was wonderful at first, but for some reason, I then tried several brands after that, finally switched to a chalk pen, and stuck with that, it worked wonderfully, very opaque and smooth application. I use mine over acrylic paint, watercolor paint and markers.

    • @gloriafry7028

    • @bodyofhope
      @bodyofhope ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you for the tip! I need a paint pen that goes over my mixed media, and the pens like the uniball and posca that everyone love don't write over gesso, hardened glue, modge podge and other varnish very well. I'll try chalk pens. Thanks

      Totally agree. Watercolor is another medium that it’s really hard to get a good white sometimes. I mostly use Posca or Copic White - it’s not a pen. It’s hard. 😅

    • @TheHopperUK
      @TheHopperUK ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@ilustralilian_ I've found the best way to add a bright white to watercolour is a white gouache, once the painting is really dry! It takes some practice but it's worth a try. Don't water the gouache down at all; use it straight from the tube.:)

    I had a thought that may be helpful. Adding a sealant, like hairspray, to your artwork before applying your white pen may help it be more opaque, more vibrant, and apply easier. I don't think there is a white pen that is overall better than the rest, because as frustrating as it is, it truly does depend on the type of paper, the type of medium, as well as if you burnish, how many layers of your medium you apply, What type of white pen you're using, or how many layers of the white pen you apply. That being said, this video was extremely helpful because obviously there are some that are better quality than others, just maybe not a "one white pen beats all" type deal. It just depends on what you're using it for.

  • @cyndih4720
    @cyndih4720 ปีที่แล้ว +43

    It's great to find more than 1 great white pen since sometimes they're out of stock locally and we'll be able to maybe get one at the store when the other is gone instead of driving to another store to check or wait on shipping. Please don't work yourself into exhaustion!! We appreciate your tests to help us, but if your brain gets too tired, it saps you of your creativity.💞 Thank you for doing this for us

  • @merchantarthurn
    @merchantarthurn ปีที่แล้ว +9

    Your stress in the middle of this video was so relatable! I struggle with suggesting art supplies because everything needs context and it means a lot to know you want to consider things from every angle. The details of what works well on what and a range of pens (for accessibility!) is a great conclusion and I'm definitely glad to hear the "winners" are on the cheaper end - adding them to my list of pens to grab :D
    Ive been frustrated with fine-tip poscas on cheaper sketchbook pages, and with colour changes on alcohol markers, so it's nice to see that it's not only a me-problem! One thing I will say for anyone who scans their work - the colour change doesn't always translate to a scan. I did WANT it to translate in one work I did so it was funny when it didn't! But it means if you're okay with the on-paper version looking a little off, a version that you post might not be messed up in the same way.
    This was a lot of work and very impressive!

    great review Sarah! the multitude of white pens out there is crazy and you did such a good job of working through your process to find the one that best suits you and many of your viewers. I can sympathise over struggles to find the right one... its never as simple as it seems, i use mixed media and find that different whites have always reacted differently especially when dealing with water, polymer or wax bases. I do not think one size fits all and using different whites on different mediums is part of experiencing art in different ways and that can be wonderful and equally frustrating. You are always so lovely to watch and thank you for your informative research.... Happy Arting xx

    my favs (not just white!) (that still work after years of non-use) are molotow one4all acrylic based pens. And the edding paint markers are way up there too and hold a nostalic value cause they were the first ones I ever discovered. the super-fine nibs have always been an issue for me though, regardless of what type of pens/brands/whatevs. I prefer angling a broader nib to get a fine line over those metal nibs that will clog the f up no matter what. oh, and of course there's always nail polish too. (plus tip for keeping nail-polish fresh over years, that I learned from my grand-aunt: keep em in the fridge! Sounds ridiculous but does actually work!)

      It's a marketing strategy to get us to spend more money. If consumers stopped buying them, they would be forced to cater to their consumers needs/desires or lose business/money. I refuse to buy anything from Arteza until they stop marketing some of their outlandishly priced productss as "budget-friendly" and "professional/expert/artist-grade" at the same time. I hate all the deception.

I have been struggling to find a good white pen that won't require me to abandon everything and fall back to using regular acrylic paint to get the white im looking for. So glad I found your channel through Chloe and def looking at your 2023 planner and the color boxes. 💜

    As a big fan of yours, who loves watching comparison videos and using your recommendations!
    I have to say its actually best for me, when you cant pick a single winner!
    I am based in Denmark, and some brands just cant be bought here or have exorbitant import fees, both for me and the stores here.
    Take prismacolor, only ONE danish based webshop sells them and they have to price them nearly as high as the Caran D'ache Luminance 😱 So from my viewpoint, a selection of great pens from various brands, allow me to actually try some without the import fees and postage, that add up if I try to buy from America.
    Also, if the white pens havnt broken you, this video 100% needs a complementary guide for HOW to use the winner(s) on coloured pencils.
    Thank you for you and your content from a fan who hopes some of the big pencil companies would develop white pens specially for using on their pencils 😁

    Sharpie used to have several sizes available for their water-based white markers but, for whatever inexplicable reason, they decided to phase out the extra fine a few years ago. This really ticked me off as the extra fine was a pen I used all the time and LOVED!! It was perfect for my use (which was mostly over black India and acrylic inks). I guess they've now decided to phase out some of the larger sizes, as well.

    I use Winsor & Newton white calligraphy ink for the highlights in my watercolor as well, of course, gouache. For the ink I use a dip pen with a few nice fine tip nibs. Highly recommend that for watercolor paintings. But for wax/oil colored pencils I'm not sure.
    Anyways, loved the video Sarah! You did a fantastic and very honest and open review process for all the white highlight options.

    Minimize color changing by waiting longer between "finishing" a piece and adding those final white marks. I use ohuhu markers specifically, and can prevent/avoid color changes entirely if I wait at least 3-5 hours

    Here's my cheap alternative and very long lasting: white tempera paint and a tiny brush (like a 10/0 round brush). It requires a steady hand, but I use this for highlights on my watercolor, colored pencil and chalk pastel art projects. I just can't with the clogged tips of white pens!

    I swear I have been through this. I have probably 30+ types. I am SOOOO sick of fighting with white pens. I've taken a ton of advice and read reviews and they always end up crappy. I've even taken my FAVORITE white paints and tried to turn them into paints that will work in empties. I like the liquitex white ink but it breaks down in a lot of mixed media.

    this again is a very insightful video. you proofed a wide range of ideas for choosing the only one. and you said one important thing "maybe there isn't the only one". bc it depends on what effect you like. so I would choose a thin one and a thicker one.
    to reach your goal and find the only one is great 🎉 bc as you said for beginners it is often a problem of costs.
    thank you for your work and your will to reach your goal. 🌸

    Hi Sarah, thank you for this thorough review. I was quite surprised with the results. If you feel like you want to test more white in the future there is also the Acrylograph pens by Archer and Olive. They are sold with sets of pens, not individually. I think they would probably compare well to the two finalists being a kind of acrylic based pen but it still water based. Thanks again!

    I feel like smudging or draging color around would be something to consider. Also if you use it on a surface previously covered by the same thing, will it clug or stop working? this is a problem for some light on dark projects. I would've try on pastels maybe? dried gouache and watercolors.

    I have used art supplies for over 40 years and I have never found any one solution that works every time! I use some supplies for watercolors and another set for acrylics and oils are a completely different choice too! Going from paper to canvas to metal or glass! You must adjust your expectations and techniques as well! This was a great video and you have done quite a bit to justify your conclusions! I have used several coats on some surfaces even more at times! I do not believe there is 1 winner but it was nice that you gave it a go!

    Every art tool is different and after watching so many reviews I have come to learn that there is NO such thing as a number one. For example my main purpose in using a white pen is whiting out the heavy black coloring lines (which you didnt even test here) and you eliminated the one I like in the first round-Faber Castell Pitt Pen 1.5-I never use white ink on black so I really don't care about that test-I want it to cover black lines on coloring books. Tombow Blender Marker dipped in professional white gouache is what I use for most of what you do in the test and it requires layers. POCA is a piece of crp as far as I am concerned and I am annoyed at how much money I have spent on them over the years due to everyone "just loving them".

      @@PensAndAPlan yes you can color over them that is why I like them. I use them on my underlayer and then usually have to apply at least one more time. I don't use them for highlights, but they are perfect for my needs for covering up lights
