To all the people saying that this is hurting the horse or that it’s abuse, no, it’s not. The nerve endings aren’t on the outer sections of the hoof where the farrier nails on the horseshoe. So this in turn will not hurt the horse as long as the farrier does it right.

Fun fact: horses aren't hurt by their shoes because there are no nerve endings in the outer parts of the hoof where the nails go in. Its essentially like their finger nails. Some horses actually need shoes for stability and comfort when riding, working, and just running around. Not all horses need shoes, but that depends on the horse, where it lives, what it does, the environment, ect. Each shoe is custom for to the specific horse and its needs. Farriers know what they're doing and if what they're doing ever hurt the horse the horse could EASILY fight back, get free, hurt the farrier, or worse. Please do not claim putting horse shoes on horses is abuse when putting shoes on them is primarily for their well-being.

It's amazing to see that no matter where in the world it is, the tools and techniques for trimming and re-shoeing horses' hooves remains pretty much the same. I guess that, for horseshoeing at least, there really is only one way to do it, and that is the Right Way!

Also, for people wondering why farriers burn hooves often in these videos - it's actually pretty integral for the health of the hoof in the long term, and a really important step in a trimming! Let me give you a bit of horse anatomy 101. (Also, for any horse experts out there, if I get anything wrong, please feel free to correct me!)
A horse hoof is made up of many little parts, and one of the parts that is integral to the structure and strength of the hoof are things called horn tubules. Horn tubules are like a lot of tiny microscopic cylinders nestled together that help reinforce the hard outside of the hoof. When the hoof is trimmed, these tubules get exposed, which leaves them vulnerable to drying out in dry climates, or to softening from moisture in wet climates. Both of those would result in the structural integrity of the hoof being compromised, potentially leading to problems in the future. Burning the recently cut surface of the hoof seals these exposed horn tubules, helping ensure the strength and integrity of the hoof in the long term! It's completely painless to the horse. It also helps provide a smooth surface for the shoe, which lends to a better fitted shoe, which lends to a more comfortable gait for the horse. So it's a win-win situation!

Foal hooves are a good way to demonstrate the importance of a strong hoof capsule, before it's fully formed around the soft tissue and everything has strengthened. Also a great way to observe how hooves have many different parts, not just the hard hoof capsule we think of!

I have dual screens on my computer so I can watch things like this and run searches at the same time. Hooves are made of Keratin which is similar to human nails and there are no nerve endings so it doesn't cause the horse any pain.
The hot horseshoe is placed on the hoof to help level the hoof to ensure a better fit for the shoe and while I didn't Google this one I learned from the video that the nails don't go straight into the hoof but in fact come out the side of the hoof.
    Really interesting stuff.

    • @lionel2405
      @lionel2405 2 ปีที่แล้ว +10

@@AnneDalton82 Yes and no on this. If you trim too much frog (i.e. too narrow or to shallow compared to the hoof wall), there's no support at the back of the hoof. There are two points of contact with the ground, the frog and the hoof wall, just like the ball of the foot and the heel on a human. Frogs need to be trimmed because a) they will wear from contact with the ground and form wrinkles where moisture, bacteria, and fungus often get trapped, and b) a frog that's grown outward will try to keep growing outward instead of growing down, where it's needed.
The reason people say that frog trimming causes lameness is because lots of farriers don't know what they're doing with the frog and will take WAY too much off, which is the same as taking off part of your heel and asking you to walk! Frogs DO at least need the ragged edges and wrinkles tidied up a bit every so often to prevent the buildup of bacteria and fungus.

As someone who has never been anywhere near a horse I am curious about two things:
    1. How the heck did evolution decide it would be a good idea to walk with all the weight focused on the toenails? 😅
    2. How do you determine if the material removed or added would be sufficient to keep the leg still comfortably flat and also be leveled with the other legs in length?

I can only answer for the first one and I will let someone else give a shot for the second question.
Evolution doesn't "decide" anything. The general idea is that random small modifications in the DNA between generations produce (usually) small modifications in the shape of the "feet". If a modification is not too bad, the next individual will survive and reproduce. Even better if the modification gives an edge.
Through generations and the accumulation of these small changes (each of those being at least "not too bad"), structures like the hooves can appear.
If your question then is : "what are those intermediate forms? Do we know them? How do they give or not an edge?", these are awesome questions to which I would like to know the answer.
      Does this help?
