    I tried this flight in Microsoft FSX in a DC-3, with almost identical results. It's doubtful that any recip-powered passenger aircraft of the Martin's generation could have climbed out of that canyon after enterering at a ridiculously low altitude.

    Nicely done. I flew Hueys in the Colorado mountains and had a great respect for the challenges in flying safely. Planning was key and not carrying more
    weight than was required for the mission plus a fuel reserve. Thank you.

  • @AvgDude

    Football players are big guys. 40 of them weigh quite a bit. If it's a hot day in the Rockies, then the density altitude would be really high, and with a plane flying heavy, it likely just couldn't fly.

    • @boneseyyl1060
      @boneseyyl1060 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      It crashed because by the time they realized they could not climb out they also could not turn around.
      The thing is though, that plane should not even have been flying OVER the mountains. The reason why, is because if they were flying above the mountains and lost and engine, the plane would not be able to maintain enough altitude to avoid impact.
      "Mr. Skipper, by his own testimony, was aware of the "drift down" safety practice employed by airlines and most operators of large aircraft when operating over mountainous terrain. Notwithstanding, he flew the aircraft in the mountain valley below the mountaintops at an altitude higher than the aircraft was capable of maintaining in the event of an engine failure." -Case Study: Martin 404 N464M
      The correct choice was to fly the route the other aircraft took, which landed safely.

    Speaking of flying into a box canyon, a Cessna 150 flew into the large meteor crater outside Flagstaff Arizona, and couldn't get out. Its remains are still on the side of the crater. Also, the planes pictured here are nothing like the plane that crashed. It was a very old Martin 404 that hadn't been flown for several months. It was originally a late-40s airliner similar to the DC-3.

    • @AutoReport1
      @AutoReport1 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      He does actually say that. The 404 is shown in an inset screen but the Beechcraft was required for the simulation.

    • @tonyunderwood9678
      @tonyunderwood9678 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Early '50s actually, and the 404 had quite good performance for its time and it was Not a DC-3 equivalent, it was a much more modern successor with twice the horsepower, was considerably faster, and was pressurized. The majority of them entered service with Eastern and TWA in 1952, followed by most of TWA's 404s being sold to Piedmont about 10 years later, who flew them up through 1970. Mohawk, Allegheny, Southern and some others also flew 404s which eventually would be sold off and went on to fly with a variety of smaller regional carriers, and with private owners. Only a couple or so remain airworthy today and to my knowledge these don't fly anymore (too expensive to operate without deep pockets), and are static displays now. Shame, they make "airplane music" on take-off, marvelous sounds. The 404 is my favorite airliner.

    I read about death in the mountains and WW2 OTU's when I first got fascinated by aviation in the 80s. Even hills and mountains of very moderate height can pull an aircraft out of the sky and inexperienced crews & their low powered, fairly obsolete aircraft were totally overwhelmed by unexpected downdraughts. The Rockies are the real thing, and no place to be sight seeing at low level, in an overweight aeroplane.

    Totally unnecessary. The Captain had a very cavalier attitude towards safety which was seen even before they left the runway when he failed to properly monitor the weight of the aircraft before taking off. He must have felt how sluggish the climb rate was as a result, and even the tower noticed it. With that known about the reduced climbing performance of the airplane, who in their right mind would risk the lives of all on board by flying into an unknown mountainous region and without proper navigational information to alert them of the geography.

    This is the third video I watched from this channel. I thought the other two were excellent. After watching this one, however, I suggest for your future videos that you spend more time checking your facts and writing your narration more carefully. You state that the Martin 4-0-4 was "only briefly produced in the '50s to be used by the Coast Guard and the Navy, before becoming obsolete." This is misleading. And, hopefully, not intentionally in order to add drama to your video by implying the 4-0-4 was quickly taken out of service by the Coast Guard due to a flawed design. Eastern Airlines purchased 60 Martin 4-0-4's, and TWA purchased 40 of them. Only two were purchased by the Coast Guard for use as "executive transports". The Coast Guard used theirs until 1969, when they were transferred to the Navy, and then retired the following year. It is true that Martin did not continue making 4-0-4's after their initial production. Eastern Airlines and TWA operated their planes from the early '50s until the early '60s, when turbine-powered aircraft replaced them. The Martin 4-0-4's were sold and remained in service until about the mid-'80s. They were operated by 11 other U.S. airlines and 7 other countries. The 4-0-4 was known as a strong, sturdy aircraft. Captain Eddie Rickenbacker, WWI Ace and first CEO of Eastern Airlines, is reported to have said that the 4-0-4 was the best airliner available. Eastern lost only three of its sixty 4-0-4's during those ten years of operation, all due to pilot error and with no fatalities. From the data I found, it appears that TWA also lost three 4-0-4's during its ten years of operation, two involving fatalities. Two of the losses involved pilot error as the primary cause. The other plane changed course for unknown reasons and crashed into a mountain. (Sources: Wikipedia and The Mid-Atlantic Air Museum). You could have found this information easily. The Wikipedia articles I read were well-documented with many references. I looked at several other sources that corroborated what I read on Wikipedia. Another point is that you could have made the purpose of the use of the photos of the two planes that were not Martin 4-0-4's, more clear. I did not notice the on-screen text about their use for simulation purposes until, after a shot of the interior, I went back to reconcile how 40 passengers could possibly fit in a plane that looked capable of seating only half that many. It would have been better to make mention of this in your narration. Overall, from what little I have seen, the channel has much promise. However, if I start to suspect that errors and confusing information are used to draw comments and extend "minutes watched" for the purpose of padding TH-cam stats, I will bail on this channel in a heartbeat.

    I have no idea why the Martin 404 was not pictured for the flight. The substitution of the Beech 99 is a disservice to the viewer. If they can computer generate the Beech they can generate the Martin, far as I am concerned. We ought be seeing climb per minute capabilities of the aircraft at MSL and AGL at whatever temperature was the case On the Day.

    A typical CFIT accident due to losing altitude during a high banking turn, especially with their already questionable climb performance. Had they closely favoured one side of the valley they may have been safely able to execute a backtracking circuit, but if close proximity high terrain caught them by surprise unless they had the power to perform a steep climb they were doomed, entirely on account of appalling airmanship and a complete absence of flight planning with an effective briefing.
    The unqualified non-endorsed company CEO had ZERO business being on the flight deck much less as an operating crew member.
    That in and of itself highlights his extreme arrogance combined with his total ignorance of aviation safety exacerbated by his portentously cavalier attitude.
    Mountain flying is extremely perilous under the best circumstances let alone blindly buzzing about valleys with lamentable climb performance. Illustrating even further their aviation safety ignorance.
    Within proximity to elevated terrain weather changes rapidly without indication quickly becoming remarkably treacherous, invisible air current phenomenon are just two of a myriad of considerations for mountain flying which is amongst, if not the most challenging aviation operations of all.
    There was an extremely steep flight deck gradient in the opposite direction of capability vs authority.
    Despite CRM not being conceived at that time this is an example of its total absence and demonstrates its vital importance.
    This accident is similar to to a 2004 CFIT accident in Afghanistan that claimed the lives of all 6 occupants onboard a CASA C-212 aircraft, as a consequence of civilian charter pilots flying a non-standard route through unfamiliar mountain valleys 'for fun' while operating on behalf of the US military ferrying military personnel and equipment out of Bagram Air Base.
    The CASA C-212 aircraft involved was one of a couple on charter from Presidential Airways in the United States.
    There are innumerable GA examples of mountain flying CFIT accidents particularly due to rotors that roll down with tremendous forces involved, along with flying centrally up an unknown valley discovering higher than expected terrain with insufficient climb performance, ultimately complicated by flying centrally through the valley rather than safely preferring one side or the other to facilitate an effective turning circuit to backtrack.

    I am really struggling with this visualisation given the Beech model used and how vastly different it is to the accident aircraft, surely there’s more comparable aircraft available for this sim? I actually tuned in because of the thumbnail which highlights the Beech aircraft which for anyone who follows aviation accidents would raise a question since the model you chose is well known for being involved in very few fatal crashes. The 404 however has a less impressive safety record. It is inaccurate and misleading for a channel professing to report accurately on incidents and events in aviation - with respect.

    • @TranscendianIntendor
      @TranscendianIntendor 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I would have preferred some sort of notice saying that there was a substitution since the aircraft are quite different. I believe a Convair 240 would have been comparable, though in that case they are still right different with the Martin having required a replaced wing after some significant crashes if I remember correctly. The substitution did bother me throughout the video.
