You had it right the first time: once NG has reached 14, you push it to the low idle, not high. And you should really leave it in low idle during taxi. You only push it to high idle just before you enter the runway. You can watch just about any of Missionary Bush Pilot's videos for this.
I almost thought I made a bad purchase because I've only watched pre-patch start up videos on this plane and always blew it or had no thrust so this video saved me! Thank you so much!!!!!!
Thank you for this guide I managed to start the Kodiak first time without destroying the engine 😂. I have only had some short test flights in the Kodiak so far but WOW what a truly fantastic add on. The sense of immersion flying this has far exceeded my expectations. The way it handles on the ground and in flight is truly off the scale from any other flight sim add on I have tried so far.
Great Video! I was having issues starting but you have cleared that up for me. By far my favorite plane. My favorite real life flight channel is Missionary Bush Pilot.
The Kodiak is on sale this weekend, so the temptation was too much for my credit card. After wiping out 3 engines, I found this video - THANK YOU!! Subscribed! :)
i wondered what was happening and what that awful sound was, why i wasnt getting thrust lol. thanks its just what i needed. really glad to see it becoming even more realistic.
Just got this plane today. Looking forward to learning the specifics about it. Slowly getting my favorites in each class together. Airliner is fenix a320. Bizjet is Cessna Longitude. Bush plane is kodiak 100. Still havent decided on a small plane, but likely just the cessna 172. The first three will keep me busy for awhile. Lol
This is the aircraft I love to use. I have arguably better or more entertaining or better performing aircraft, but this is the one that feels right, particularly when I go exploring (usually because I underestimated terrain or weather!). I really hope this can be updated to study level someday. Thanks again, JB.
Great aircraft, one of the best ! I appreciate the amphibian version as well, so you can land on the water…not much extra to pay. Thx for sharing your knowledge Jon !
Thanks for sharing this info. This plane was on my to buy list for quite sometime and i just bought it. I struggled with it for a couple hours (mostly cold and dark starts and also low engine power after starting) and wondered if it was buggy at first. NO, this was certainly not the case it is not buggy, it was ME that was buggy.😂 Turns out, it is a very realistic and detailed aircraft and the developers put a lot of effort into it and it shows. Definitely one of the best deals on the spring sale right now. I just took a flight in it out to the great barrier reef. No doubt, I'll be putting a lot of flights on this one.
Yes nice that the accuracy is improving. Fairly new to turbines and being the keeno to do it right that I am I download the POH before searching TH-cam. The TBM POH is over 900 pages! 3rd flight I ended up flying the trip manually as AP wouldn't engage. When I landed and was going through shut down procedure I realised I had forgotten to engage the AP auto trim switch!! With regard to hot start - haven't seen a POH yet that doesn't insist you check throttle quadrant for emergency power lever, throttle, prop lever and fuel condition lever all being in right place as part of before start procedure. Should be standard for all turbines
The fun thing is that each aircraft differs slightly in terms of procedure, because the hardware and systems are always different. And of course we jump between aircraft, and often struggle to remember "how does this one work again?" :)
@@jonbeckett yep exactly! Tbm starter switch goes off automatically. Caravan you have to switch off yourself. Like you say - it is great when they model failures accurately. Loving this sim just want the flight models to be more accurate on stock aircraft. Can't wait to test flight model on xplane 12
now wonder. I was thought what is wrong with the kodiak. I thought the program was got some error. So it become more realistic now. thanks for the tutorial.
Interestingly the Pilatus porter POH has you engage the starter before you turn ignition on to make sure you get oil pressure Only when you see oil pressure do you turn ignition on Thought that was quite interesting
Yes, you watch engine oil pressure come alive when you are on the starter, but you want the engine turning on a PT6 when you turn the igniters on. You don't want to turn the igniters on if the engine isn't turning in case there is fuel in the engine. You always want an turbine engine turning when you do this. Some turbines with fadec just require you to hit the start button, and the computer takes care of everything, and I have to assume some of the newer PT6 variants, specifically those in helicopters have this. I have run PT6's in ag airplanes, and have flown some Air Tractors with a Walters turbine conversion on them as well.
Just saw your video, and I have a veto. The reason for the Hotstart is NOT that you forgot to start the fuel pump. It even starts with fuel pump in the standby position very nicely. The true reason is, when you switch the red cutoff-left to early from off to low (or high) position! This gets the famous Hotstart, because you inject fuel before you have a proper airflow thru the engine. This burns your turbine instantly, which is maybe half a million to repair for the Kodiak.
I’ve blown a few engines lately, so I’m revisiting this tutorial :) Should be good now :) I’ve been editing sound.xml file, to stop annoying lower the gears message in the amphibian version of Kodiak, unsure if successful…time will tell
Please tell me what is ignition for? I just saw a 2 min video showing " how to start engine" and that guy started this engine without using ignition why?
It depends on the situation in which you are starting the engine. If you read the documentation that comes with the aircraft, it goes through the various scenarios and when you should and should not use ignition.
I've seen some people start the engine with the propeller at high RPM. Would that damage the engine? From what I've read, the reason you don't want to introduce fuel too early is that there wouldn't be enough air moving through the engine and thus cause a hot start. It's crazy how finicky and unforgiving a turbine engine is compared to a piston engine.
If you introduce fuel too early, it will build too much pressure when it ignites. If the engine is turning over, the fuel that gets injected and combusted is burnt and gone.
Hiya John Firstly love your channel and all the GA videos. Soft question, could help me out how to configure my tca trust controller to use the second lever for the prop. Have tried and just can't get it right. Thank for the kodiak videos ya had the engine problem thanks again
All you need to do is remove the existing prop assignments, then add the correct one by choosing the axis - don't bother wiggling the levers to detect them - it will get it wrong. L Axis X is the left stick, L Axis Y is the right stick.
Despite how nicely this plane turns, I find it difficult to taxi. It's very similar to the Cessna 208B which Microsoft has improved over time but this is plane is worth the price especially after the last two updates.
Hi, can anyone help? No matter what I do, including going back to the main menu and creating a brand new flight, my previously cooked engine keeps starting hot from cold and dark. The SWS site now mentions "residual" engine behaviour, but not after completely going to main, I hope???? Needless to say, I follow the proper starting procedure.
As far as I understand, there is a problem with the simulator itself with certain types of aircraft failure, where the only solution is to go right the way back out to the main menu.
I have both Kodiak & Sim updated but I cant get engine started. The ITT is too low - 8° and does not increase. I have set everything correctly, even the BEACON lights and required bypass... Still nothing.

That's down to the aircraft developer to do that. In most cases, MSFS does not model damage for the same reason that Gran Turismo doesn't model damage.
