If you're wondering how to see the northern lights or how to see them from your DJI Mini 4 Pro or other drone, watch on. It's actually easy to see the northern lights once you know how, but it's not so easy to see them with your eyes; you need a trick or two to get the best results...

Thank you, Ian, beautiful foto and video 👍
Thanks. My experience here in Holland was pretty much the same. I did the same things except : fly my mini 4 Pro ! I thought it wouldn't be any good in low light like that. Your footage is great.
Great tips, Ian, concisely delivered as always.
Was amazing last night, was so clear to the naked eye here in Cambs. Now I did not fly the Mavic Pro 3, maybe tonight.
30sec, f/4, ISO 800, sunny WB. BOOM!
Thanks for the video. I am in Northern Maine, near New Brunswick, Canada. This was my first ever sighting, I have been rained out EVERY SINGLE OPPORTUNITY in the past. Last night, stepped out my front door of my new house, looked up and saw a faint cloud in all direction. Took some shots on my iPhone and I can’t believe the show we had here for 2+ hours. Ready with DSLR and Mini Pro 3 tonight. 😀
Thank you for the tips , Ian. We won't be seeing them down here in Texas. However, my daughter experienced the lights with many fantastic photos from her iPhone up in Seattle, WA, USA.
Last night was incredible in Aberdeenshire, the colours were visible to the naked eye and in all directions.
dark sky needed then you can see it with your eye, in Cornwall last night we had red and green columns above us and all around me,,it is stronger when using a camera with longer exposures but clearly visible with your sight
Makes sense; amazed I got anything in a town...
Good shots Ian
Interesting to hear they’re still grey in Iceland. Only seeing the linear bands was it clear it wasn’t cloud and only occasionally the pink or green. Wide angle night mode on my iPhone worked well, but I didn’t do any post processing and it looked great. I was using a tripod phone mount to enable longer exposures, but too long and it will blur the image as the aurorae do move about quite quickly.
If you're in dark skies and they're really strong, you'll see colours, but not as bright as a camera
Here in central New Mexico, it has been cloud city, with thunderstorms and even tornado warnings east of us. So much for the high desert climate we have here. It isn't even monsoons yet. We drove 9 hours east into Texas for the Total Eclipse, and brought two of our drones with us, the clouds cleared out and we got some incredible photos with the drones and our Nikon. We have seen the Aurora many times when we lived in Ohio, we saw it pretty often. Last night, it was totally socked in. We couldn't even see the mountains that are very close to us! Hoping the clouds clear out tonight. We will be using our DJI Mini-4 Pro, and perhaps our largest, the Matrice 30T. Just stepped outside, and it has every indication of clearing. Even a small rainbow was on the buttes to the east. No pollution up here in the East Mountains 7000 feet, and we have a Dark Sky Ordinance so stars, planets, and the Milky Way is so bright you can almost read by it! Thanks for the great tips! Makes so much sense that your eyes can't see it all. Hope everyone is able to catch it. We may not be able to see it as often as the lucky folks way up North, but sometimes Mother Nature will give us a special treat! 🤠🐴🌞🌎⭐🖖❤
You got to see the eclipse..... That's a brilliant result 👍🏻👍🏻
I went out at 10 local time Omaha Nebraska USA pretty spectacular. Went back at 12 and 1 am looked like a flickering candle flame!
I was in the middle of nowhere, sky was a deep red with the naked eye. Managed a few drone pics, 3-second exposures was all it would manage due to wind, any longer exposures had image blur.
Thanks for the advice hopefully I will get better results tonight 👍👍
Its been epic in the Yorkshire yesterday! Also couple of drones flying.
Good luck tonight! Trying your recommendations here in the Carolinas. Let's get some photos and videos!!
Unfortunately I went out on the second night and waited until 12:15 at night and give up 🤦♀️ as a load of drunks tuned up after the pubs shut 😢 great information as always Ian ❤
Great reminders Ian! Thanks 😚🤟
Good informative video.
My local FB group is full of these colourful photos but no one mentions that the colours are NOT seen by the naked eye. An expert on the BBC agrees with what Ian says in this video.
Well if the BBC said it’s true it must be! 😂🤣
Cheers ian for the tips going out tonight here in Edinburgh mini4pro on charge keep up the great work 👍 👏 😀
Mk1 eyeball just fine thanks
Lots of great info there Ian - thanks for that 👍 Clearly visible last night down here near Mapua NZ.
Have been seeing great pics from some kiwi mates.....
Thank you
Saw them last night but did not take any pictures. Tonight I have setup my DSLR on a tripod and there is nothing in Surrey at midnight. 😳I think I have missed that boat. Oh well at least I saw them yesterday…
Gutted; nothing tonight either.....
Cheers Ian 😎👍
I live 5 mins walk from Morecambe Bay beach... didn't help as I was at work 07:30 a.m. my app was pinging like crazy all day yesterday....left the promenade at 11:00 . I use the Aurorawatch from Lancaster Uni.
It sure was awesome on may the 10th, I actually got some nice shots of the aurora as well, just on my phone. I gave it another try just now (the night after) but there was nothing that I could see. There was a thin layer of clouds as well, which didn't help. Did you get to see anything?
Nothing before bedtime at 1am 😐
Could you see the colors on your monitor while flying the Mavic ? Thanks for the awesome information. Your the man!
Yes I did....
Good information.
I use my phone camera when driving in the fog, it cuts through and lets you see 5 times further than the naked eye.
You can see about 3.5-4 times further in rain/snow as well.
I assume because it doesn't catch all the reflected/refracted light from the water droplets that make up fog/rain/snow, the way your eye does.
Intrigued.... Need to try this but in a stationary vehicle......
No offence, but that's one of the stupidest things I've ever heard. Not recommended!
@@giotto4321 no different than backing up with a camera. Or piloting a drone. Both of which society does all the time. But it's a fair opinion if you've never done those things.
/EDIT. And it's not like I'm looking down and only paying attention to the phone, it's held up parallel to my regular view via a mount and I scan both. It's real no different than checking your three mirrors.
@@Hat_Uncle Understood, your original post suggested (to me at least) that you were constantly watching the screen rather than the real road. But I'd still have thought that incorrectly relying on the view on the mobile has potentially much more serious consequences if something does go wrong, compared to flying a drone or using your reversing camera.
I was worried about launching a drone as the KP level was 8 !!!! Do lot of chance of complete GPS loss or interference
I'm so fed up. I looked out at 10.30 and nothing. I went to bed as so tired and missed it all. Looked out all night last night Sat night UK and nothing. Day late dollar short. 🙁
Yeah, Saturday night was not great.....
Few mention (realise) the downside of all this geo- magnetic interference, is a real chance of loss of GPS lock,(flyaway).
Only 1 of the 5 global commercial licences I have covered this in any depth (Australia).
Mind you, 10hrs of atti mode flying under observation is mandatory there for the entry level (RePL) Licence.
Oh, what of the sky
-and all it holds.
[. . .] never till tonight, never till now,
Did I go through a tempest dropping fire.

Alas, for tonight it is the Eurovision Song Contest final, and my cup overfloweth at present with highly questionable performances from much of Europe.... Too much to compose a suitable response my friend 🤠
@@IaninLondon I will enjoy the lights. They are but lights and no forebodings within them.
where abouts are you Ian you said South Coast East Sussex. I am the same near Eastbourne
Near Lewes 👍🏻
@@IaninLondon near me then. I am polegate
Taiwan is 25/24 degrees North so I'm not optimistic about seeing them.
Or Dam I couldn't care less category
