I'm sharing my experience in the hope that it benefits others. My furnace was exhibiting a frustrating behavior-it would start but immediately shut off. In my case, I have two furnaces, and the problematic one was located in the attic. This issue occurred during extremely cold weather, around minus eight degrees F outside.
Initially, I attempted to address the problem by cleaning the flame sensor, even though it didn't appear dirty. This seemed to work temporarily, as the furnace ran for about 20 minutes before cutting out again. Frustrated but determined, I stumbled upon your video suggestion that proved to be the solution: cleaning the condensate trap.
Upon inspection, I discovered that the condensate trap was frozen. After thorough cleaning the condensate trap, the furnace started working again seamlessly. A heartfelt thank you goes to you for this video. It's incredible how such timeless wisdom continues to assist and benefit so many people, including myself. God bless you!!

Perfect!!! some of these air switches has two contact - one on the front one on the back check both! On my Carrier unit the yellow jumper powered both switches - then there was a brown (signal to control board) and orange (signal to control board) two different outputs signals. Inducer housing pressure and collector box pressure (check all 3 tubing- green, black, and black square tubing vacuumed sensing signal). Blow them out (toward the inducer housing) and you can check them with a OHM meter by gently sucking on the hose and hearing them click. Make sure the hoses are good and tight - a very small vacuum leak can cause them to not work!

It was the old P-trap! Half a gallon of condensate drained from HX. Dirt & debris plugged it. Thanks! Saved a service call on Christmas Day with the forecast calling for highs in the single digits.

Thanks! It was -4 out and the furnace failed with error code 31. After watching your video I was able to diagnose that it was a clogged drain. After draining the water that was backed up I was able to clear the drain. Problem solved! You saved me an expensive service call and hours in a cold house. :-)

I was getting 3 error codes: low pressure switch (31), high pressure switch(32), and draft inducer(42). I was thinking failed part of blocked flue. Well, I ran a fish tape down the venting (short length), and it didn't do anything. Then I watched the first minute and a half of this video: you said blocked trap. Sure enough, that was the issue.
I now have glorious heat so much my wife said it was too hot and could I "stop playing with the furnace". :D
    Thanks! :)

I cleaned the drain trap and hooked up a shopvac blower to both tubes and let it blow for a bit and BOOM! it worked thanks for the tips Ed you saved me hundreds. When I blew out the tube connected to the fan it blew out some water so I think that is what fixed it.

Just thought I'd say thanks for the video! I had a code 31 and replaced the pressure switch with no luck. Your video helped me identify a drainage issue with the trap. I took it out and cleaned it up. Everything works perfectly well. To anyone who might have similar issues, make sure to blow air through all of the inlets / outlets of the trap to remove debris. I simply used my mouth (forming a barrier with my hand). I soaked it all in hot water / dish soap as well before blowing it out.

      Hello Ed, Thank You
you just saved me $1800, the tech that came last week indicated that I needed a new secondary heat exchanger.
He did not spend much time and could not explain why I needed it. These 90 percent bryants had a class action suit with regards to the Heat exchangers, (that's another email). In an case I followed you direction and in addition, I disconnected the intake and exhaust pvc an attached a shop vac and blew air through the system. System has worked fine since.

CHEERS to you, Ed!!! Thank you for your very helpful video. On a freezing and snowy April evening our furnace threw a code 23. I read somewhere it had a connection to a code 31. I checked the drain tube as you suggested and found it to be full of water. I disconnected the condensate trap to rinse it and found it was clogged. Some hot water and tapping on the kitchen sink cleared all the dirt and crap from the inside. After putting it all together and crossing my fingers we are a warm and happy family again! Thanks for the help and many blessing to you and yours!

I have the 31 and it gurgles or sloshes when turning the motor that should spin freely. Mine is a similar newer model you have on the floor. However, I don't have the hoses going to the trap. It appears to go from the back casing into the trap. I removed the trap and cleaned it well. Some gunk but not much. I believe I identified the clog in the drainage hose going to the sewer drain. So long story, my question is how do I get the water out to stop the sloshing when turning the motor? I don't see any hose to drain. Hope you have a moment and know how to fix...

    • @EdPelto

Sorry I missed this. You need to take the little rubber elbow off the housing if you have water in there. That needs to come off to clean the trap.

Thank you so much! I had code library 31 flashing on my Carrier furnace. After struggling to diagnose the problem myself, I turned to TH-cam. My issue was just as you described; clogged condensation line. I also appreciate the heads up on using a bucket. About 1/2 gallon of water came out.
My model furnace had the drain line assembly inside the furnace which made it harder to clean. I took some flexible pvc tubing I use for home brewing beer and used it to blow out each inlet. Lots of junk came out.
Again... thank you. You saved me a weekend service call to the HVAC company!

my Bryant plus 90 gas furnace was installed in April of 2005 when house was built. I had trouble with it starting and then stopping after 5 - 15 min. then it would blow cold air. This video diagnosed my problem to a tee. It flashed a 31 code and I found the condense lines were clogged. Did as you suggested and cleaned all lines out and no more problems. I will tell you that after cleaning water drain lines I heard a noise coming from the inducer motor but it cleared up after running it a couple of times. At first I also thought the inducer motor was bad but I now think it was the backed up water in the collection box. Anyway thank you for the insight and how to repair this common problem.

What if the inducer doesn’t come on and isn’t getting power but it’s not a bad board? Drain is cleared as well

    • @EdPelto
      @EdPelto  3 ปีที่แล้ว

Do you have 24 volts at w and c on the board? Are the batteries good in the thermostat? If you have 120 volts at the inducer and it's not running the inducer is bad.

AWESOME! My central heat Carrier had error code 31. With a lot of doubt, I went straight to cleaning the drain trap. I should have gotten the bucket first. About a gallon of water came rushing out as I took off the first drain line. The first few flushes of the drain trap gave nothing. Then a bunch of black junk came flushing out. I re-installed the trap and the unit has been running ever since.
    THANK YOU !!!

Hi Ed, thanks for your tips with the 31 code issue. I taped the blower cover panel switch down so I could look things over and still run it. Can I expect to know if I've fixed the "31" problem if that cover panel is off? I won't be back at the furnace location for a few more days and was just curious. Thanks a lot.

    • @EdPelto

That door switch has to be held down. Every time you take away the power it resets the fault code . So reinstate the high voltage and wait for it to fault out again.

Question?? I have the Bryant plus 90 I been having this 31 code played with the drainage think I freed that up seem to work fine for a couple days. Now she will not fire it will got through the process then when the inducer starts and the igniter lights the gas it will quickly shut down. Is this pointing towards the pressure switch?

I have the same model furnace but get intermittent code 14 "ignition lockout" and have to reset the furnace. Two service companies cannot find the problem despite cleaning, inspecting, testing all potential issues. Vents, air intake, exhaust, ptrap, drain, even changed gas valve, same intermittent problem. Anyone have the same problem or solution ?

Excellent video. I found it at 2 in the morning when I had no heat in the house and the temperature outside was 2 below zero. I was getting the LED 3.1 Fault so I followed your video and cleaned the drain trap. Within 15 minutes the furnace was really blowing out the heat. I have a Weathermaker 9200 but I think it was a little newer that the one you worked on. My drain trap was not located on the outside. If you feel like make any more videos and happen the be working on a Carrier Weathermaker 9200 Furnace could you make one on how to locate and clean the Flame Sensor. Thanks again you saved me a couple of hundred dollars. Jeff

Add me to the clogged drain trap. Furnace kept going on and off, couldn't get the pilot to kick on. Went through everything and drained the trap. Still nothing, Then I watched your video again and Although mine was far worse about a year before I flipped it over and another couple of ounces came out. Hooked it back up and then the furnace kicked back on. I think mine just needs to be replaced soon. Years and years of build up may not completely fix the problem. Thanks for the video!

I was on one of these about a month ago. Cleaned it. Back a week later to find that I did not clean it well enough. You have to hear the air sloshing with water through the trap to insure it has been thoroughly cleaned. I am still learning.
