  • UTSAV (translated in Hindi, as festival and celebration), transformed from the concert ‘Back to the Blues’, is born from the first collaboration between legendary Carnatic songstress Aruna Sairam and leading sarod artiste and composer Soumik Datta. Our concert, presented in association with Soumik Datta Arts, premiered on 15 March 2018 at St John’s Smith Square.
    Here is an additional song to their 'Utsav' playlist which weaves together Carnatic music, jazz harmony, Hindustani ragas and Sanskrit chant. Accompanying Aruna and Soumik are an astonishing trio of musicians: piano played by Al MacSween, mridangam, ghatam, morsing and kanjira by Pirashanna Thevarajah and bodhran and percussion by Cormac Byrne.
    Now available for touring in 2018/2019! For bookings contact: soumikster@gmail.com
    Music composed by: Soumik Datta. Commissioned by: the Bagri Foundation
    Sound: Camilo Tirardo Filmed by: Nick Morchang & Luis Veloso

    A story told:
    Krishna the little cow-herd has danced and stamped the great and feared snake, the Naaga Kaaliya, into submission. The snake lies squashed and tired, its venom squeezed out of its fangs with the ferocity of Krishna’s feet drummimg on its head. Krishna looks compassionately at the defeated serpent and says “ If you had not poisoned this beautiful river Yamuna and the creatures who lived and bathed in its blue waters, oh Kaaliya, why would you have to lie here like this in pain, with your life nearly squeezed out of you?”
    To this Kaaliya replies, “ Oh, Krishna! You are the Creator, the Doer, and all that is Done. Krishna, you are not just You, but You are also me and the creatures I poisoned to death. Krishna it was You who put this venom in me, as well as my nature to spit it out. If you had only filled my sacs with Amritham my fangs would have flowed with that life-giving elixir instead. So, why do you ask me why I did, or did not do? Ask yourself that question!”
    It is all the Play of that Paramaathman Krishna.

      That is why for me hinduism is so politically confusing and there is no proper answer to any particular sector.

    • @chandraravikumar
      @chandraravikumar 3 ปีที่แล้ว +17

      S roy Politically? I do not understand why “politically”. But I am sorry you find the philosophies of Sanaathana Dharma (aka Hinduism) so confusing. To me it explains every question, or doubt that arises, not just in understanding the what, how, why etc. of this manifested/created universe, but also all its parts and processes. The limitation is only my capacity to ask the questions, and to work at it and to wait till the answer reveals itself.

      There is no concept of Devil or demons in sanathana dharma .
      What ever happens is just Gods Will and play. One has to transcend all dulaities to understand God/Self. The Self is no different than God.

    Western society is so impatience to clap as soon as there is any moment of silence, instead of actually listening to the complete piece. It's not necessarily something bad, but something to consider.

    • @nictharpa
      @nictharpa 5 ปีที่แล้ว +53

      This is actually really traditional and common even in India, the audience will clap in the middle of the piece if one of the musicians does something really noteworthy, which is I think what they were doing here too.

      @@juan.orduz.musico Yes, it can be really thrilling sometimes, on a few occasions I have been in audiences where the musicians have played something so astounding that we all jumped to our feed to applaud, right in the middle of the piece. This continues to be one f the most vividly descriptive compositions. I've heard this thillana in the classical carnatic kutcheri format too, also by Aruna. Like the "flight of the bumble bee", you can literally imagine the scene in front of your eyes as you listen to the music. This version is creative, playful and takes the composition to level where more musicians are having a ball with it! Kudos to all fo them!!
