    I just found this channel, I'm an electric guitar fanatic since I was a child, but because of my country, I can't get a good one, I have an old selder right now !
    And this channel literally is my comfort watch now.
    You can't imagine the joy I find in these. Seriously, your imagination won't let you imagine how much I appreciate and enjoy these videos. Trogly, you're amazing. Thank you!

    IMO that’s a killer Les Paul. It’s light (for a Gibson LP) it sounded great and I love the color. I have a black Fender Tele that is double bound with white binding, yes they get smudges on them but when I change my strings, oil the fret board and clean it up even with play wear it looks great. Certain black/white guitars look awesome and this is one of them. Great video and axe Trogly!

    Catalina island off the coast of California known for it's elegance too, and is a perfect name for this elegant Les Paul, like a fine tuxedo,this beauty stands out in this LP, definitely a keeper.

      There was also a sea plane that was used during WWII as a scouting aircraft. with the name Catalina, they don't have traditional landing gear they have pontunes instead for landing on water. and the fusolodge is boat shaped on the underside. they were an important factor in the Pacific theater of WWII. in the US winning against the Empire of Japan. which was a hard fought battle. because of their scouting purpose. they could fly in the clouds and peek out. and report ship movements of Japanese war ships. especially aircraft carriers. but they were somewhat slow flying aircraft so they were no match for fighter aircraft. which meant they depended on flying above the clouds. they were sorta Funny looking aircraft because of their unique shape. which earned them the nickname ugly ducklings. but surviving aircraft are still appreciated today for their unique capabilities. but many of them are too old to be flown safely today.

    Beautiful guitar but I must say I do prefer the split diamond on the headstock although they’re far more common obviously. The binding on the headstocks definitely give them a touch of class too and set them apart from a Standard and what not.
    I’m glad you pointed out the details regarding the tailpiece / bridge as well, I see so many tailpieces set way down with that ridiculous string angle pitching upward towards the bridge more times than not too… maybe this will shed some light onto the tone chasers chasing smoke 😆🤙
    Love your show man!

      It's actually a surprise that the Gibson demo shop is selling that guitar? with their reputation for headstock breaks. especially with the other options they have. such as gutting it for parts, and tossing the husk. or replacing the neck among other things. it must be a near invisible repair?

  • @SamuelMurrish
    @SamuelMurrish 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Is there not a massive crack in the neck/finish? 14/15th fret on the top side of the heel during the blacklight portion? @ 19:48
    I’d be more concerned about the heel joint than the video leads onto at this point. Especially with the touch up on the back joint...

    Great Vid. The 1996 Joe Perry Les Paul, custom shop version, is also chambered, probably like the Catalina. Same pickguard/truss rod, similar real MOP inlays.

  • @clarkbabin9799
    @clarkbabin9799 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    This one that your reviewing just looks so classy. With the pick guard the headstock custom shop logo and pickup rings. With that finish just makes it all look like fantastic. I know it doesn't have the sparkle finish but I find that just cheapens the look. I understand the issue of having the tailpiece slammed down to the deck putting way to much pressure on it. But I think that kind of break angle affects the strings also. Not only for ease of playing but I'd bet the possibility of a string or two popping sooner than it would normally is higher.

    True the stop bar should be bottomed out for sustain, so top wrapping is the solution.
    Also, top wrapping minimizes the pressure on the bridge for easier thumbwheel adjustments.
    I enjoy your show. Always good info.

      Another person in the comment section. said that it was the first time in history. that the demo shop was selling a guitar with a headstock repair. and was curious if Trogly was going to buy it? I left a reply stating that was strange. that it had to be a near invisible headstock repair?

    Gibson decks the tail pieces down to the body from the factory. I’ve bought 3 new Les Paul’s between Nov 2020 & Nov 2021 and all 3 the tail piece is down as low as possible. I raised it on the 2021 Standard I bought because she played a little stiff (it worked to fix the stiffness) but have not changed/raised it on the 2020 Standard or the 2021 Custom Shop Custom…

  • @windward2818
    @windward2818 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

    The guitar is wired in the Modern style with no metal pot plate, and includes a grounded tailpiece.
    It is interesting the slight changes in some of the wiring techniques from Gibson over the years even though they follow the same basic schematic. The schematic tells you how to connect components as per nodes or netlist, but not where, the where is important because it established how currents actually flow. For example, the output from the selector switch using the three Gavitt wire technique, which this guitar uses, is usually established at the switch. If this guitar used this popular technique you would see the insulated Gavitt wire, covered in tubing or sleeving, from the output jack to the switch. The guitar in the video solders the output Gavitt wire to the neck pickup volume pot rear cover, and then insulates it from the pot to the jack. To me that pot solder connection is not necessary or wanted.
    You really should insulate (cover with sleeving all of the bare outer braid Gavitt wire as it routes through the guitar. So, the braid grounds only connect at the volume pot rear cover and no where else. This way you know how the ground currents will flow. Also, you should sleeve the tinned bus wire as it route within the control cavity. You can see how the bus wire is touching the braid and the braids touching each other in the control cavity which is complicating (unwanted) the ground connections.
    The ceramic tone caps should be replaced if the guitar is going to be a player and not purely for original guitars in a collection.
    Done correctly is the ground bus wire connect from the tone pots to the volume pots (first) and then bridging across the volume pots (last), with no ground connection across the tone pots, which would form a loop, which is undesirable.
    The pot rear cover soldering is poor quality, and for the price of this guitar when new, the flux residue should be removed.

    Hello Trogly! I comment from London, thank you for putting up the vids everyday just before I go to sleep so I can have sweet dreams :D Do you think there is a Guinness burst Lest Paul out there somewhere? I work in a pub and when pouring a pint, with Guinness you have this phenomenon when after filling it up to 2/3 of the glass, you wait for it to ''surge'' and then the magic happens. That cloudy beer you poured starts settling and there is a fine shift of colours when the bubbles surge down the sides of the glass and up the centre to form the head. Seeing this process really makes me think, that would look amazing on a Les Paul. Do you know if such guitar exists?

      The 2008 LP standards have that same chambering. At least some of them do. They aren’t that well known. Some people didn’t like the locking output jack with the red button or the quick connect electronics system with the circuit board. Honestly, they are incredible guitars though despite the little critiques like that. I don’t see a lot of them come up for sale.

    From a burn mark on the headstock. I suspect that the fresh owner of the instrument had heard the expression "lemon oil" somewhere and went to perform maintenance with culinary lemon essence? In normal concentration, this liquid does not affect the PU coating, but it dissolves nitrocellulose varnish perfectly!

Just solder the connections from a guitar cable to a pair of the input connectors used on multimeters, or solder a guitar 1/4" phone plug onto a pair of multimeter test leads. This little tool is a great way to go when you need to quickly check the pickups without taking the control plate off the back.

    Can you do another episode on Gibson cases sometime in the near future? It looks like Gibson is currently offering the Canadian cases(style anyway as I think my Custom Shop case is made in Central America) but with the square Chinese style latches, they’re also offering these insane $1,200.00 cases, a modern take on your favorite “chainsaw case” and the historic reissue Lifton cases. But, I think an episode outlining the differences would be interesting as again I think Gibson has mixed & matched specifications from different manufacturers and to me that’s kind of cool.

      The Custom Shop does a pretty good job recreating the original top carve. That top carve alone is reason enough to spend the extra for a Custom Shop instrument. The Gibson USA tops are better these days however Gibson will always keep the Custom Shop carve a little better. In the '50s much of the top was shaped by hand with simple templates to guide the craftsmen. As such there are some surviving examples that have a really extreme carve and dish. Personally I think the top is one of the best parts of a Les Paul.

    I remember the guitar center by me had these in stock for a long time... I really wanted the yellow one but I didn't like the headstock logo.

    The paper rick to measure string angle is unlikely to work if the bridge is bent ...

    What about the Les Paul Elegant? It was chambered and I have one.

    I think the binding on the headstock looks great as well. What looks tacky is that round logo and that ugly truss rod cover.After all, les pauls customs have binding around the headstock. What's tacky is that red les paul with the Christmas volume and tone knobs.🙄

    He forgot to call the M.O.T. guard! Not a bling fan, but enough appointments, no overkill. I think Coral would look great on these. Oxford or Rhino Gray too. Nice axe, Mr. T. Ü

    Pickups matter. The 57 classics in this guitar and the purple one Austin just reviewed outshine the 490’s typically in USA models. To my ears, they are much closer to the tones in the classic rock recordings we all know.

      Regular Gibson USA models have come with Burstbuckers for the last 20 yrs pretty much, whereas it's the LPC's that come stock with 490R/498T's. Personally, I like the 490's but then most of my Gibsons are from the 90's so they're what I'm used to. I'd say there's very little difference between a 490R & a '57 Classic neck pup but obviously the 498T is quite a bit hotter than any of the '57 bridge configurations. Horses for courses I guess.

      @@jubei7259 I over-generalized. I remember Studios and Customs came with 490’s so I assumed it applied to those in between. The hot 490T is more “modern” to my ear (not bad, just not “classic/vintage”).

    This LP indeed looks great but it's hard ro get an accurate idea sound wise since everything, especially when distorsion is on, tends to sound exactly the same in your gear. Give this Gibson a Marshall JCM-800 and you'll hear it come to life…

    I noticed on my gibson lp, the bridge is closer to the pickup. On my epi lp the bridge is further from the pickup. I was like aha! Thats why gibsons have a more slinky feel but why the difference?
