Austin, now that you’ve reviewed a Gibson Fender style guitar why don’t you review a Fender Gibson style guitar! The Fender Robben Ford Signature Model from the early 1990s is very much constructed like a Gibson Les Paul Standard (double cut). Mahogany body/neck, carved flame maple top and a set neck with a 3x3 headstock w/Holly overlay and MOP inlay! BTW, As pointed out in another comment, at the 11:08 mark you can see the damaged ground shield of your middle pickup. Restoring that broken ground may fix the middle pickup’s output problem. Gibson calls those inlays “split-diamond”. Great review, thank you
I had a M-III that I bought for about $550 (best as I can remember) at an invitation only sale at a local music store in 1993. Sold it in 1998. Checked prices on Reverb after watching your video--if the guy who bought it still has it, he made a good investment.

This made me seriously laugh out loud. Having owned and sunk a ton of cash into fixing Les paul's to be right I will never own one again. 3 weeks ago I was at a GC, picked up a pretty Les Paul to give it a whirl. Was instantly reminded why never Gibson again. Completely missing the binding on the treble side of the neck. How it left the factory, I will never know.
Just cut it in half and see what's inside......it's not difficult. Very cool and unique guitar. Headstock looks awesome and makes the guitar even cooler.
One thing about these 'superstrats' from Gibson is that they always stay true to the set-neck, which is super-rare for this type of guitar. Most are either bolt-on or neck-through. The M-III is really nice because of this, with a really deep cutaway and no heel. It gives you great access to the upper frets that very few guitars can offer.

I currently own one. I owned a Kahler version in the late 80's. Sold it regretted it. I bought another Kahler equipped version 20 years ago, but found the one I currently own in a pawn shop. Had a Kramer case that came with it. Sold it to a guitar shop and reseller for the same price I bought it for. He used to work in the NJ Kramer factory.
You might be able to get that middle pickup working by seperating the 2 conductors with something pointy (it looks like they're shorting) and slip a little piece of shrink wrap or electrical tape between them to seperate them.

I have 2 V's with the same layout, I play hard rock...if you play 80s metal I guess you go for Floyd for sure. I also have a mahogany solid body with Maple neck and floyd guitar to do that 80s thing
Man sucks for the middle pickup because that is a truly lovely guitar. On a different note, please do ol' Jerry's 'Wino' Paul. I don't know if Mr Cantrell is that popular among the Trogly's universe, but that would be a lovely guitar to review and demo.
Crazy how much this resembles my Jackson strat [cheddar shredder] originated from same era. Same pickup config however my middle pickup still working. The shape, style, headstock all very Jacksonest. Still prefer Gibson traditionals but very interesting find from a lost era in Gibson history.
I loved the US-1 super strats. A friend of mine's sister won one in a radio contest. I think it was from an Ozzy tour. I tried to buy it from her, but she wouldn't sell it. A few years later I heard she pawned it when she was short on cash. Pity. She really didn't know what she had.
@@bikerjon8934 to be fair, Jerry has always been a huge advocate and unofficial poster boy for G&L so to see him abandon his actual gear for a corporate sponsorship feels disingenuous at least.. It's as if he one day suddenly announced his signature Marshall instead of Freidman, ya know?
I had a 1990 Fire red Gibson SG, with a Floyd rose., with no pick guard. The guitar played awsum. The action and sound was perfect. The floyd rose was installed so nice. I wish I still had that Guitar. Little did I know, that you cannot even get something like that today. what I had before.
For soft dents like those in this finish you can use an iron or soldering iron over a damp cloth to re-swell the wood fibers that have compressed. Not a big operation but gratifying
Really cool guitar!!!! Almost wish they went for the 24 3/4 scale to make it more "traditional" but man what a screamer!! Even with the bunged middle pickup.
I need you to review the Jerry Cantrell Gibson les paul Custom. My biggest wish is to get any sorth of cantrell's guitars, so if you could do that video ill be very very happy man
The M-III also. They refuse to bring back but some version were just incredible. Have an Epiphone version which is bolt-on neck and that is incredible too...
I can hear that balsa wood body in the clean sounds which is very similar to my pre-production Parker Fly, which I've played for 26 years. It is interesting to see that Gibson pre-dated Parker in the creation of a sandwiched body composite guitar!
These were idea designs taken from the Neal Schon guitar design Aching approached Gibson to make his Schon guitars, which were first made by Jackson, then Larrivee in Canada. The ebony fingerboard, split diamond inlay, Jackson headstock are giveaways, cues. Looks alot like my Schon guitars.
The lead coming from the middle pickup looked a bit rough, like I could see more copper than I'd like to and I noticed that even before some trouble with that pickup was mentioned in the video, so that might be the problem I think the lead is about to come lose from the bobin
I just realized from watching this, I think they styled one of my guitars after this one. I've got an LTD m403 ht. It's got a flamed maple top with a mahogany body. It's the exact same shape, but with a reversed headstock. If they didn't model it after this Gibson, then it just so happens to look a lot like it. Mine is satin finished though. I'm thinking about polishing it to be shiny. I have my strat as my #1 right now, so it might be a fun, low risk project.
Nice guitar! I absolutely agree, the gloss black back body is very meh, with an almost certainly sticky neck finish. The Balsa wood in the body definitely reduces weight (mass), but is not a wood species I would think would be a good choice for a guitar build. I can't see it being suitable for the neck, just due to the softness, and especially due to the lack of rigidity. Still looks good.
Maple neck. My concern would be the tailpiece bolts being pulled out. I've seen a few cheap basswood superstrats with the Floyd posts leaning forwards.
I'm really enjoying your channel. I was wondering if you knew anything about the 08 Epiphone Wilshire? I have one but there's things that don't look right to me.
I'm kind of glad you put up that card at 2:21 that showed the old Norlin corporate address. I never knew they were based in Suburban Chicago, which I'm almost embarrassed to admit considering I grew up less than 50 miles from their office and I've owned a Norlin-era Gibson (1981 Sonex) since I was a teenager. I looked it up, and it looks like the office building that housed Norlin was recently razed, and is now owned by Puig Holdings, an apartment developer, so I think we can guess the final fate of that place.
I just wanted to say that I love your channel. I've learned so much from you. You seem like a stand-up guy and I follow your Reverb feed. I will definitely buy a guitar from you one day with full confidence. Keep up the great work!
I so want one of these, didnt know these existed. I like the feel of a Gibson over a Strat so if this neck feels like a Gibson and it can sound like a Strat im all in ! :-)
The naturals with nice tops are hard to find. Only 2 or 3 typically show up per year. Maybe this video will make more surface. Mine is on my website, but I'm not actively looking to sell it
Neat guitar. I remember these in the guitar magazine ads, but I don't recall seeing one in a store. I'd actually be more interested in the Kahler version to add to my Kahler collection. But not for the $2849 price the one currently on Reverb has.
Would think single coils some kind of fiberglass or nylon resin roughly ground That's from the observation apparently looks like a strat single coil and a tele A real stretch would be that the bobbins was made from some older circuit board material (such) and wound
Gibson have always got rid of old models in Europe. Back in 1960 when the SG Les Paul came out they dumped all the bursts that dealers returned and didn't sell in Europe, and the UK specifically, then all the blues guys picked them up and made them some of the most desirable guitars ever made.

I loved the US-1 super strats. A friend of mine's sister won one in a radio contest. I think it was from an Ozzy tour. I tried to buy it from her, but she wouldn't sell it. A few years later I heard she pawned it when she was short on cash. Pity. She really didn't know what she had.
Great video as always. Can't wait to hopefully see you review the Jerry Cantrell signature that just got announced!
JC “Wino” LPC 🤘
Fuck that Cantrell guitar. And really fuck him for putting his name on anything Gibson. He's always played G&L.
@@mikexxx11
OK boomer👌
@@mikexxx11
don’t you have to yell at some kids to get off your lawn?
@@bikerjon8934 to be fair, Jerry has always been a huge advocate and unofficial poster boy for G&L so to see him abandon his actual gear for a corporate sponsorship feels disingenuous at least..
It's as if he one day suddenly announced his signature Marshall instead of Freidman, ya know?
I have a pretty nice S900 I need a locking nut and a truss rod cover. Any ideas where I can get those parts? it’s a epibennder tremolo.
I remember Gary richrath from REO Speedwagon was on an advertisement for these
I had a 1990 Fire red Gibson SG, with a Floyd rose., with no pick guard. The guitar played awsum. The action and sound was perfect. The floyd rose was installed so nice. I wish I still had that Guitar. Little did I know, that you cannot even get something like that today. what I had before.
I have had 2 of the US 1s one was ebony and the other was sunburst. Great guitars. Had several WRCs as well.
Only the earlier U2 had binding, they were very different from the later ones. I have a 87 and 89 U2 and a really nice m3🤘🏻
I have a Washburn from the 80's that's set up like that. Hss with the toggle switches
Yup...Gibson is typically a decade late out of the gate......and then they stop and go back to an obselete design.
Maybe you can have the middle pickup rewound or checked to see if it has a weak or bad ground.
Gibson making strats always weirds me out 😅
Greetings and well wishes from Utah man!
I'm with you on that, a strange one for sure.
Greetings from Northern MI.
For soft dents like those in this finish you can use an iron or soldering iron over a damp cloth to re-swell the wood fibers that have compressed. Not a big operation but gratifying
in Order for that to Work You must remove the clear coat
Really cool guitar!!!! Almost wish they went for the 24 3/4 scale to make it more "traditional" but man what a screamer!! Even with the bunged middle pickup.
US1's are awesome guitars.
You should definitely check out one of the epiphone pro usa super strats from around the same time!
Bautiful guitar. Have you noticed that the headstock is similar to the one on Schon guitars?
Ohhhh yes! I remember those! Strange-looking things they were, too! 😀
It is a beautiful finish. but beyond that, the headstock is the only thing I really like about this guitar.
@@mightyV444 You bet.
There was also an LP Custom Lite (Lyte?) made with Chromyte and with a thinner body. Was it introduced before this one?
Please dear god, can some one tell me what chords he used it the distortion demo at 27:03, because they sound awesome!
Those Schon guitars are so ugly
The lead coming from the middle pickup looked a bit rough, like I could see more copper than I'd like to and I noticed that even before some trouble with that pickup was mentioned in the video, so that might be the problem I think the lead is about to come lose from the bobin
Dave Mustain models should have this head stock. It could also be reused in Kramer!
That figuring looked beautiful.
Were they doing this in response to PRS that was starting to take off right around the same time?
At 10:54 it looked like the wire going into the middle pickup was kind of frayed.
Did you have the middle pickup rewired ? Isit for sale? what price???
My uncle has one of those it’s bright red with a trem
I want Gibson to rerelease 3 models from the 80’s. This, the Victory, and the Firebrand 335. Correction, would also love to see the M3.
You should do an in depth video on all the "gibson era" years from beginning to present
They basically went from Bad straight to worst.
@@nilswegner2881 wouldn't want a Gibson if it was given to me
@@mikexxx11 you'd have to pay me Money to even Touch one.
I just wanted to say that I love your channel. I've learned so much from you. You seem like a stand-up guy and I follow your Reverb feed. I will definitely buy a guitar from you one day with full confidence. Keep up the great work!
I'd suggest you review a strandberg in the future, I would love to hear your opinions on a headless guitar👍
No wonder everyone changed the pickups. what's up with the Jerry Cantrell "Wino" Custom. I should have heard about that from you.
i think i saw one with a floyd rose or kahler tremolo in an 80's guitar magazine. it was insane !
When gibson advertised the M3 I fell in love with it and wanted to have one...and still do.
Cant find any Natural finished ones for sale. These are nice looking guitars, wish Gibson would re-issue this model.
You should even at that price. You won't regret it. Ii is a great playing & sounding rare guitar that will likely only appreciate in value.
Beautiful guitar, dude. A super strat with all Gibson top quality details.
I have a 92 miii. Almost the most non Gibson Gibson lol but you’ve got me beat
Balsa core lol after the Sonex thing didn't work out so well...
That thing sounds great especially on distortion
That middle pickup sounds like it has a short in the windings. You could get it rewound.
Would think single coils some kind of fiberglass or nylon resin roughly ground
That's from the observation apparently looks like a strat single coil and a tele
A real stretch would be that the bobbins was made from some older circuit board
material (such) and wound
if your settings are as normal this one is the very worst sounding ever, all the pickups sound like junk in my studio headphones. it looks killer
I believe Scotty Young played one when he subbed for Malcolm in AC/DC
Never seen this!!! Its gorgeous!!
Maybe the middle is meant for more acoustic sound with the tone all the way high just the middle
Trogly's in the HOUSE!!!
Wallmart
Gibson have always got rid of old models in Europe. Back in 1960 when the SG Les Paul came out they dumped all the bursts that dealers returned and didn't sell in Europe, and the UK specifically, then all the blues guys picked them up and made them some of the most desirable guitars ever made.
Maybe the US1 will become a Gibson classic? Time will tell.
