Danny this is how I'm using my sketchbooks. I'm not well at the moment and everything is difficult from sitting to standing and moving about with no known time when this will end for me. None the less I use your videos with your calm reassuring unpretentious encouragement to spur me on and excite me again about being with my array of tools and continue. I'd just thought I'd say you really help me to keep trying. Even though I might be knowledgeable about paints, materials and drawing with a background in art your videos have me appreciating how the connection with fellow like minded people even if only remotely can transform ones experience. Thank you. I wish your videos on occasion were much longer sometimes.
What a great comment! I’m going to copy it into my journal to remind me to have fun and not criticize what I’m doing. Thank you for putting it out there. ❤
Ok, I do this often. I have a watercolor book, a pencil book (for just colored pencils) and another book where I do thumbnails, write other notes and experiment. After this video, I think I need to put it all together. One Book to rule them all! That way I can really get the most of what I'm doing. Great video!
While I rarely use my sketches as a source for paintings I think the very fact that I have done them ultimately feeds into what I produce. They become part of my vocabulary and journey
Danny, I've really appreciated your series on illustrated journaling a lot! I struggle with both journaling and drawing for most of my life due to trauma (one parent reading/stealing my things without asking and then judging me for the contents). I'm 31 and just now able to work to reclaim being able to have a visual record of things for myself. It's almost embarrassing to talk about, because visual records are so ingrained in the human experience. Combining them into a single fun book could make things easier for me to work on both things at the same time! Plus my best ideas tend to come from poking at a concept and seeing how it changes, so having a space where I write AND play around with media may be what I need to help me find my creative eye again.
I’ve been using trace to do my sketches on and regret not being able to go back through the things I’ve worked on for further evaluation. This makes me want to use a sketch book more
..I recently went through old sketchbooks..good memories..alot of them have blank pages SO I decided I would the sketch the people on all the TH-cam channels I subscribe to..I froze the screen & sketched in pen..if they had a cool color I might add that color to the sketch..I have finished one sketchbook that way! I really looked forward to doing this most days if I could!..the portraits are not perfect for sure..I nailed alot and not so much on others..date & sign for sure!
I have a bunch of sketch supplies. I am in school and the teacher makes us use different mix-media in our projects. I have swatched out my crayola markers and color pencils in my sketchbook. I had to draw each day of the semester.
My sketchbook journal is an amalgamation of brain dump, memory keeping , scrapbooking and keeping my hands busy. Every page is different, messy and full of personality and i will not have it any other way
I love this video and I love seeing all the different art. I really love these styles. I didn't realize how much information I was storing about art supplies until he talked about the use of making a swatch page and filling out first impressions. I don't think writing it down would free up any space in my noggin but this was inspiring regardless. Especially writing down project ideas. I'll make a list. Crossing it off will be a lot of fun too!
I love this idea - not just a simple search but all the other things that go with it. Thankyou for producing such great content - you are so soothing to listen to as well as knowledgeable b
Wonderful! The very reason I have far more multimedia and drawing sketchbooks than watercolor (which I use solely for out n about urban sketching now). I need lots of pages for a variety of mediums in my artistic endeavors. Pencils, crayons, markers, paint ... doodles, ideas, scenes, text ... all together.😊
Hell yeah, I'm currently using my sketchbook as journaling for my superhero story. I can sketch out ideas, plot points and fun ideas. Also personal reflections. I sometimes write on tracing paper.
Hi Danny and viewers, I love sketchbooks but I've never felt comfortable with the usual sketchbook format because I can't edit out or insert pages, also if I do a great drawing/painting it is not protected. I also like to keep all my swatches/art material tests together in one reference folder. So here's what I do: I buy the most interesting/artistic/brightly coloured lever arch files I can find and insert clear punched pockets. And that's all. This enables me to insert any type of paper/card I want, from tracing paper to thick coloured card, even felt or fabric, photos, stickers, etc. I don't like to keep all my work indiscriminately because some is really bad so I don't see any point in keeping uninspiring work. The other advantage of this type of sketchbook is that I can move pages, for example group together those on the same topic. I don't like to hoard bad work so when I have time I go through my past sketchbooks and declutter uninspiring work that doesn't serve my style anymore. Not to mention the fact that I'm getting on in years and live alone. I don't want to leave behind so much stuff that whoever inherits will throw the lot away because there's way too much to sift through. My sketchbook method allows me to be selective so hopefully only my best work will be kept and possibly put to good used by the animal charities I'm leaving my estate to. And my best efforts will have been protected from stains and smudges by the clear plastic pockets.
I tried travel journaling on a recent 3 wk tour trip to Turkey, Greece, and Italy. I ran out of pages! Plus needed more room for notes. What was I thinking? I loved the small unobtrusive sketchbook I could carry around in my hand or pocket just with a pen to add color to later but next time I’ll know! Bigger one or another one. Thank you for the good thoughts and ideas.
Great video, Danny! Very inspired as always! I appreciate you talking about this side of the sketchbook practice as so many artists feel the pressure to make their sketchbooks “Insta-worthy” and perfectionistic. Also I love making “squatches.” 😜
Good morning Danny, Ebony from Perth Western Australia. Danny, I'm hoping you can share how your sketchbook practise converts to creating art that sells. I do love my sketchbook... but I guess I'm also wanting to produce art to sell also.
That’s not my focus in making art, I’m afraid. For me art is a process that brings me peace and perspective. I’ve rarely sold any of my art. I don’t have much useful advice for you.
Do you keep a separate sketchbook for these tool pages? I often test current or new tools in the back of my sketchbook, but this may not be useful 20 sketchbooks in the future.

Art can be such a healing practise. Wishing you all the best with your health, and sending healing thoughts your way 😊
I hope that you feel better and art always brings you comfort.❤️🙏
I’m sorry to hear that you are ailing and I do hope that art can serve as a medicine for you. Feel better!
@@puppyandthefly3347 Wow thank you so much. I think it may be helping already.
@@jude1515 Thank you as it happens I have been a little better today it must be in part folks like yourself wishing me well.
I love using my sketchbooks like this. I feel like a mad scientist 😂

@elizabethbarnes3969 I love that!
Sounds interesting 👍🏻
Oh same. I

I needed this video today! I have eight or so unfinished sketchbooks that I plan to finish up, no matter how "ugly" the drawings are.
I’ve been using trace to do my sketches on and regret not being able to go back through the things I’ve worked on for further evaluation. This makes me want to use a sketch book more
Good video. There is rarely a time when I don’t think of art. It exhausts me in a happy way.
I know what you mean.
Danny, thanks for the healing.
Good morning , just draw during my breakfast , I always call my sketchbooks my library , love the lab makes it more magical
Love that!

Very good advice as always. Thanks for showing Hopper's Journal, what i would give to have a closer look
It’s on display in the lobby of the Whitney
I’ve begun a ‘Sketchbook Database’ sketchbook like Danny described in this video…very useful and very fun!

Such great ideas for art journals. Thanks!
Thank you! ❤
Hi Danny, I recently bought a set of watercolor markers and I think I will try this. Thank you very much.
Go for it!
Hi Danny, your audio is changing the volume constantly, it's not the big problem, but perhaps you can check it? Love your work! Best regards.

What do yiu think about digital sketchbooks such as Samsung notes?
Thank you
