It’s work but kinda easy too. Just like how you sketch buildings, Parka. looks like a lot of work when you add in all those details but you do it so often I think it’s almost easy for you now:)
What you said about that little watercolor "blemish" near your head looking good, but if it was done in digital it would look like a mistake, is absolutely spot-on. I appreciate you pointing that out.
It's always a small debate in my head when colouring. Digital or natural. Digital is easier and give me more control. But I do get away with more thing with natural. And once the painting is over, the piece is pretty much complete. That's a nice feeling.
This entire exercise will probably have multiple benefits for the creator who is making the journal. Not just to clear one's mind, and to record little fun things to remember on a future rainy day (or for family members to cherish a long time from now), but putting down these images and words most likely helps the brain to focus and clear itself of any "cobwebs" or stress-inducing things that might be annoying it at that moment. So, basically, you are choosing to focus on the specific thoughts for the diary entry, focusing on the template, on the art work ... and it all can bring some semblance of peace and clarity, I reckon. Just a hunch on my part. It is a good idea.
Ordinary made extraordinary. That's a nice way of seeing it. I guess it's like framing a drawing. I seem to like capturing the mundane. Also the exciting parts of life. But the mundane everyday life moments can be meaningful when I look back on it later on.
I love this! I have been using the cartoon format to keep a daily drawing practice (one square per day), but your idea is so much more engaging and stimulating. Thanks Drew, I always get so much out of your channel!!🙌🏽
@ No, not now, but I am interested in that direction. I just feel happy that I have kept up a daily practice for 3 years now. Your videos have really helped me stretch and try new things! 🌟
Loved it! What a great way to document your day/week/recent. Thanks for sharing this, I will try it too. BTW, you have a nice soothing voice to listen to. 😀
Fun to watch, and good suggestions. And yes, let the watercolor do its thing... Other kinds of comic diary structures can be found in Lynda Barry's books and videos.
This is such a good idea, and I always forget about it. But I also like how you see it as your "journaling". I write 5 lines every evening about the day, maybe I can turn it into something pictoral which would add to my goal of wanting to draw more.
Thank you for sharing your process, it's such a great gift to us who are watching, thank you! I have recently started an illustrated journal after living my whole life loving drawing and being creative but somehow I was too afraid to put my pen on paper 75% of the time. I'm finally not afraid anymore. I switched to loving the process instead of the en result and started believing in my own ability to draw what I see. So now I'm searching for all different techniques I can try out now that I'm not afraid anymore. Thank you so much for sharing 😊
Thank you. Yes there are many small nuances that can improve how the comic turns out. But that just comes from doing it often, observing what works and what doesn't, and just trying different ways:)
Thank you Drew. I'm so glad I came upon your feed tonight. I followed right along and did my own in a few minutes while watching...so helpful. I will use your template and try variations. Thank you !
OH wow... yeah I too am thankful that you came up in my feed. I love this... very relaxing but also it's something that I not only want to do but now something that i have a guide on HOW to do it... good job sir... and that watermelon did look good-n-yummy.
Yep I didn't know how it would pan out. But not caring too much about it turning out perfect or awesome, and not worrying that it might be just a bunch of mundane things, it usually works out haha.
Love the laid back, made for you style. I have found that I always have a pressure to preform so it is very nice to see othwr artists do something for themselves.
Yes I've to fight that pressure to perform too, especially when recording for youtube. And I think keeping it meaningful for myself is a good way to do art, even if no one else cares:)
This really helped me!! I became to not watch most drawing videos because they doesn’t fit to me. Your way is just how I like it. A sketchbook is personal and it doesn’t matter how it looks. (I’m kinda sick of all the super beautiful sketchbook tours). I’ll try your way because I like the idea of a comic journal :) thank you sooooo much! (It almost motivates me to make videos on my own, but I’ll start with the comic journal. )
Haha. I know the feeling. Seeing really amazing art by artists can be awe-inspiring, and also intimating. I sometimes wonder if I will get to be as good. But then I tell myself that art isn't about comparison. It's about doing what I love, finding meaning in that, being open to keep learning new things, doing my own thing. And usually when I'm doing that, I find that I've improved some more:)
I love the idea! This will help me improve my drawing and motivate me to journalize in a more exciting way instead of the chicken scratches I do when writing.
Yeah it's kinda more interesting to read journal entries like these. The challenge is to make them communicate clearly (but simply) so I know what's going on in them years later.
And it’s a good meaningful way to use up inks and paint. Thanks for sharing your experiences in Iceland. I’ve been there years ago. It’s a wonderous place.
I love your template! I'm going to try this. By the way, I tried the idea in your previous video making random color shapes and then making characters from those...it didn't go well! 😅 I think something more reality-based like this idea would be better for me. We'll see. Thanks for sharing!
Well done on trying! If you post it online, I wanna see it:) I suppose there are quite a few things to take note and balance when putting it together so it’s readable. It can get messed up pretty easily too. Kinda like juggling many things perhaps. But that’s what makes it fun too:) yes this one is more down-to-earth haha
Hi! I use a Hahnemuehle grey sketchbook with 190gsm paper. But for quick washes and fountain pen ink, most sketchbook papers above 100gsm should do the job. I don't usually use serious watercolour papers as my sketches are pretty loose and casual:)
Yes and no. When I try to make it polished, it’s a bit more work. But if I do it quick and loose, and not worry about perfection, it can be pretty easy-going. Even relaxing:)
I'm so glad this came up on my YT feed. Such an organic, liberating, and fun way of recording with art and words! Thanks for sharing.
Welcome:) and thanks for watching! Yeah just one way to deal with daily stress!
You make it look easy but I know it is a tonne of work

@@Drewscape-art It's easy when I'm out urban sketching. Very difficult at home when there are so many other things to do
@@teohontech7141haha i think I know what you mean, with kids, noise and stuff to do at home.

Such a wonderful way to record memories! ❤️
So cool and simple. I know a lot goes into this kind of Journaling but a great way to get started. Thank you. Really nice. ❤
delightful and uplifting, you're giving us great gifts with every pen stroke
True❤his videos inspired me to go back to illustrating again😊🙏
My pleasure to share what’s good

This really made me happy and hopeful somehow! ❤ Lovely indeed. Will try this. Great ideas.
Happy and hopeful👍
Watercolors always give me that comic strip feel. I love the idea of journaling that way. 😊
Oh thank you for sharing this…. this is such a beautiful concept. I love the way that the ordinary is made extraordinary in the small boxes.

Ah. Easy. I use waterproof fountain pen ink in the fountain pen. Here, I used platinum carbon black. That’s my go-to waterproof ink for fountain pens.
