    SHE LIVES! Nicely done! Mice can do more damage than people could ever imagine to a sitting vehicle or piece of equipment. Luckily old iron has very few wires on it. haha I'm mostly a Massey guy to but all old iron has some sort of story and sentimental value to it so I don't care what name is on it...love seeing them brought back to life!

      I agree with each of your statements above. Some of the tractors here I have very special connection to and some I do not. This one, I surely do !! Wait until I get around to the Allis's. LOL. There may be an interesting story on one or two there as well. I'm like you...mainly a Massey guy. I've got my Dad's favorite tractor in the other shed. A '41 101 Super. Its got a SUPER story that goes with it. LOL. Its not original, but that's part of the story...

    Hi Wendell! Once again you’ve brought a long-sleeping old tractor back to life. 24 years is a long time and yet you didn’t have to do a whole lot of work to get it running. And the work light came on too! Very nice job, my friend!

    • @tractorman4461
      @tractorman4461  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      This WAS surprisingly easy for one having sat idle for so long. The best answer was that its location had to be just the perfect conditions minimizing the drawing of condensation inside the cylinders. On the other hand I have had monstrous problems in some that had sat only a few years. Conditions in their surroundings while sitting makes or breaks an easy resurrection !!

    When I was 18 I had a job skidding tie cut loags out of the woods out into the field where a guy with a 52 chevy with a homebrew side loader could get to them. The tractor was a JD 50.

    • @tractorman4461

      Hahahahaha....then I assume the sound of that motor rung a familiar bell didn't it ?!! We loaded tons of logs onto the log wagon with a tractor....but no loader. We used the tractor in reverse and a cable hooked in the shape of a "V" to roll them up ramps. We backed up because the operator (me) could see the action of the log easier while the old man cut 'em this way or that with a cant hook to keep them going straight up the ramps. Good comment about the logging Randall...don't you kinda wish there was these fancy I-phones and TH-cam to upload to waaaaaay back then...?? Thanks for the comment and have a great weekend !!

      @@tractorman4461 The side loader had two arms that dropped down on the ground and using cant hook the logs where rolled up on them. they where made from a drag type breaking plow beams. had two cables that lifted them up and catapulted the log up on the truck had a log bunk to catch them.. the cables where winched by a car rear end, the trucks PTO was hooked where the driveshaft was on the car rearend . he had a master cyl hooked to each brake. he would lock one brake and the other axle spun and wound up the cable. and he had a throttle and was expert at giving it the correct amount of gas to make the log land where he wanted. the other master cyl locked the brake that powered the cable drum and controlled the speed that it returned to the ground. And It was amazingly fast. He had a trip on the far side log bunk to unload the logs. I was really interested in that contraption.

      @@thecollectoronthecorner7061 Man...that sounds like one heck of a creation !! Wouldn't it be nice if somehow it could have been filmed back in the day. There are some amazing things that come out of a home shop and this sounds like one of them. A rig like that can only be run that smooth by the guy that built it !! Great story Randall.
      We too have an old home made winch that operates similar to the one you describe here. Only one master cylinder and hand lever though and it stops the one drum. With the axle housing cut out and a pipe reel welded to it, the opposing axle becomes the cable drum. I just used it about 6 years ago when a neighbor ran a 4000 Ford loader tractor and 12' bush hog into his lagoon. It was sunken in to the top of the transmission housing and the bush hog became a huge suction cup !! But the old winch pulled him out. Nasty smelly job though....

      Well...I've never claimed to be a big JD guy and haven't in 60+ years of working with tractors had the opportunity to work with either JD's or tractors with hand clutches to any extent at all. It makes sense to disengage the hand clutch just like you automatically disengage the foot clutch. I've not even driven this 50 yet either. Waiting on a radiator and a re-wiring. Thanks Jeff for the input.

    Great story 💚
    I'm too late but the first thing you do is READ the Owner's Manual. Its a repair manual showing every maintenance job that you should do yearly. Alot of Condinsation collects in the cast iron cases. You'll find A LOT of water in the trans/diff, engine, powr-trol, and side gear case that the clutch is mounted. Remove the lower coolent hose and you'll find a ton of rust and dirt collected there.
    Air filter oil bath is always a treat when you drain that cup. Get the Owners Manual!!!!
    God bless 2 cylinder John Deeres 💛💚✌️

  • @johndeere1951a
    @johndeere1951a 8 วันที่ผ่านมา

    The clutch should always be engaged and spinning when running to save the bearing inside the clutch.
    It should be cleaned and repacked with wheel bearing grease every year per the owners manual.
    Change and flush all the oils. A ton of condensation builds up in those cast iron cases, even if it has just been sitting.

      I strongly suspected it would've been stuck from sitting so long. Condensation internal of the cylinders is hard to avoid, but the old barn was loose enough that it didn't create a big difference in temp between the outside air temp and the temp of the cast iron of the tractor. No extreme differential means no sweating and that's what superb ventilation does. At least that's MY suspicion. But hey...I was wrong before !! But no matter, it wasn't stuck and that DOES matter !!

    Wendell, that old 50 sounded pretty good, and as mentioned in a few previous comments here, it amazing didn't take a lot to get it going after sitting for 24 years. There is a 50 and an A just south of that Kubota dealership you visited a few weeks back. They're sitting at the 4 way intersection where 32 heads back east towards St. Gen, at a car dealership. BTW, the JD 50 was made from 1952 to 1956.

    • @tractorman4461
      @tractorman4461  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's good to know. I wrote the serial number down but haven't checked into it yet to find out what year it is but I figured mid-50s. I know where that dealership is and didn't notice them there the last time I passed through. We took the scenic tour and went past all the wineries and came in the back way.
      About the start...so much has to do with where a tractor is left set. I drove a smooth running MH 30 into a lean-to after it was picked up very reasonably. It sat there 10 years so I thought it'd be an easy start because after all, I DROVE it to its parking place....ended up it was seriously locked up from a roof leak that went straight down the exhaust pipe for years !! A TOTAL engine rebuild later, it is one of the better smooth running 30's now...but...its throw out bearing is going bad... Oh well. See you later Terry. Be Safe and stay warm !!

    That tractor was 12 volt when new and was positive ground. It is incorrect to say that any 12 volt tractor is negative ground. They generally switched to negative ground when they started using alternators. Most 12 volt tractors from all brands with generators were positive ground.

      Yes, I found out quickly that I misspoke in the video but I immediately corrected the statement in the first line of the description. I've never been into the JD line very heavy and I just did not research before I made the improper comment. Thanks for the clarity.

    Oil pressure to seidment bowel is a emergey shut off , if you roll the tractor. If you pop the little round cover off the big fly cover. You can start the tractor by hand.

    • @tractorman4461
      @tractorman4461  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Good to know. I'm not a big JD guy. Heck I even thought this was a negative ground at first. I got factory wiring diagram and found that its a positive ground. But no matter, I'll change it all over because one of the relatives of the PO had installed the battery backwards at one time or another and burnt up the wiring anyway. Smoked 'em !!

    I sure like the look of the tractor with the old generator, I know you can make that work. Would the right amount of stop leak be worth a try?? I'm surprised the oil pressure fuel shut off still works. Have fun.

    • @tractorman4461
      @tractorman4461  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      The leak is in the middle of the radiator. I think it froze and swelled the run. It's a pretty large burst and to get in to it to solder it, I'd have to remove at least an inch of fin or more. I may do that and keep it as a spare, but I was lucky to find a good radiator cheap enough. Thanks for the thoughts though. I appreciate the input. Yes, it is surprising that the diaphragm isn't dry rotted away for sure !!

    When I was a kid, you know how long ago that was, my Dad had an MT John Deere. It was only produced in 1949-1950 OR 1950 -1051, I can not remember. We had a 6" sickle mower for it and a two-row cultivar for it that we used all the time. My Dad used it until he quit farmed that was until about 1972 or 1973. Good little tractor.

    • @tractorman4461
      @tractorman4461  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I've seen MT's at shows, but the closest I've been to running one was a JD 330. They look to be a great all around utility tractor. I'm thinking the reason you like the old two cylinder JD's is because they have a lot in common with that Harley you're so fond of. LOL Thanks Dave for the visit this morning sir.

  • @aldenbanniettis431

    I have the JD Model 50. The carb bowl is giving me grief. I found that the bowl was missing its gasket (part # R-10171-R); that is, the gasket that seals the bowl to the carb. I have cut a new gasket from a gasket sheet. But it seems impossible to keep the gasket centered properly when remounting the bowl to the carb. The bowl has a rather thin lip and the mating surface on the carb is about 1/8". I suppose I could take off the carb and get the gasket properly set- but it is such a pain to remove this carb. Any ideas? Also, when remounting the bowl, the locking nut has a slight shoulder- which side of the nut is supposed to be up when installing the bowl? What might be the purpose of such a shoulder on the nut?

    • @tractorman4461
      @tractorman4461  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Is there a chance the original gasket was made of cork ? It's a much thicker material and most all my old tractors have that as a gasket material on the sediment bowls. I just do not remember specifically what was on the JD. Usually the flared out side of the nut, (the shoulder) goes towards the indention in the bottom of the sediment bowl. It's supposed to spread the pressure of the nut to a larger area of the glass bowl. Make sense ? On securing the gasket during assembly a small amount of grease should do the trick of just holding it flat and in place for the few seconds it takes. If that fails for you just apply a thin ring of Form-a-Gasket. It'll be tacky and do the same thing, but know that it will probably cause the gasket to be destroyed the next time it has to come apart. And with today's blended and oxygenated fuels with a little ethynol added, it WILL have to come apart again....especially if it has to sit a few months between use. Of course that is my opinion based on my own experiences. Good luck and thanks for taking the time to watch and comment on the video. Btw, I admitted to a few others that picked up on it, but the JD 50 came out 12v POSITIVE ground and not negative ground as I indicated in the video.

    Hello Wendell, I have the same tractor at home i can't get to run. Does it need a resistor between the coil and the points? Somebody has changed it to 12vdc already.

    • @tractorman4461
      @tractorman4461  ปีที่แล้ว

      I'd check and see what voltage you have on the distributor, then work backwards until you find where the voltage has stopped. It'll be a bad wire or faulty connection I bet. Also check the polarity. I mistakenly said in the video that this tractor was negative ground from the factory but it was actually positive ground from the factory. Oh, and if its this same model, they came out with two six volt batteries in series to give a 12 volt electrical system. I think the actual wiring diagram is available on the internet. That's how I found out I was wrong about the negative ground. So to answer your question, it probably never had a resistor if it is still original. It did come with a 12v generator and not an alternator though.
      Another thing...you can start at the battery and work forward in the circuit until you find where it stops just as easy as working backwards from the distributor. And if you don't have a meter, you can use a 12v auto taillight/plug with two wires on it. Ground one on the frame and just touch the other end to the wires to follow the 12v to where it stops.
      Hope this helped you Tom !! Harbor Freight has a 2 or 3 dollar Chinese made digital voltmeter that works quite well too.

In case you didn’t know, it is good practice to engage the clutch (pop handle forward) with transmission in neutral when you are sitting around idling the engine. Looking forward to more. Keep up the great work. I have a JD A and JD B, among others in my collection.

      You know, just the other day, while running my brothers '37 Massey Harris Challanger he told me that that was a good idea and I've just got to commit that to memory. Thanks for reminding me. The only hand clutch I have is the old '39 A so I'm going to set both of them like that this morning. The beer can could be there to act as a brake for the throttle to keep it from moving. Beware of the diaphragm in the sediment bowl. When, (not, if) they go bad, gas ends up in the oil. Wixs makes a fuel filter that will fit in the sediment bowl, number 33039. That way you don't have to have an in line filter. But the best investment I've ever made in my distributor type tractors is an electronic ignition.

      Well I am not a John Deere guy at all and as a result I found I made a wrong assumption that it was negative ground. It is definitely positive ground. I strongly suspect the relatives of the gentleman that owned this mistakenly hooked up a battery reversed and that's what melted the wiring off the generator. It's going to be changed to an alternator and changed to negative ground permanently. I'm not even going to check out the generator...its probably toast anyway. Thanks Brenda for the input.

    I got my 520 in 1972 and still have it
    they were all built as positive ground
    My experience is changing them to negative ground didnt work as well
    they usually like to start lean, as soon as it hits give it some choke my two like full choke at that point then half till they warm a bit
    On my tractors if they rollover 4 times 8 revs and dont hit they are not going to start, check the points and plugs fuel is usually not a issue unless you are using the wrong lead substitute (see below)
    they were built with 6 volt coils with a 12volt by pass from the starter so on start they have 12 volts at the coil ( there is a resistor under the dash to drop the voltage)
    A sliver of emery cloth works as good a points file, some times better
    you can short the points with the screw driver to makes sure you have spark and by pass the points when testing
    be careful with lead substitute the grey stuff can plug/gum up the whole fuel system

      @@tractorman4461 Like I said I have had a 520 for 50 years and a 620 for 40 (used to have 2 620s) so if you get stuck let me know, both mine still run and can go to work, we just don't drive them much as the parts are getting harder to find and the newer diesels are easier on fuel. one of the things you will want to do before using a lot is replace the 90w in the gear case and first reduction gear. it gets water in it and lots of use can cause it to foam and get in to the breaks or clutch. in the breaks it can make them grabby and break either the break spindle housing or teeth of the brake shaft that runs against the bull gear, those broken teeth can if they fall right knock a hole in the gear case if they get between the bull gear and the case.
      another thing I would do is find the lowest point in the fly wheel cover sheet metal and drill a small drain hole in it. those old tractors can leak water into that space and if it starts to fill with water it can mess up the starter

They really aren't a true 'hand' clutch. This old 50 is going to be put to work as soon as I get the radiator problem straightened out. I found out AFTER I got it running that the tractor is 12 Positive ground instead of my thinking in the video that it was Negative ground. But that tid bit of information explains the melted wiring off the generator if one of the old guys family hooked up a battery backwards. Thanks again for the comment and if I run into an issue I can't figure out I'll holler for help !!

    note: that tractor is a positive ground.

      Like I said, I'm not a big Deere guy, but that might explain the wires on the 12v generator being smoked before I started on it...that's why I disconnected those wires before I put in the battery. I'll have to ask my buddy if someone tried to get it fired up back in '96 when it was relocated 30 miles away because then that would explain the melted wires on the generator. But no matter, because that's all going to go away anyway when either a Denso or a Delco one wire alternator is going to go back on and I'll maintain the now negative ground. Thanks Michael for the heads up.

      @@tractorman4461 If you go to Neg ground dont overlook having the coil properly
      polarized. The main reason is a properly
      polarized coil produces a Negative voltage
      pulse going to the plug center electrode.
      So the spark jumps from the center electrode to the outer electrode. The
      hotter center electrode emits electrons
      much more freely than the colder outer
      electrode so that you get a better spark.

      @@michaelcates9042 That's great information. I knew the steps required for the change, but didn't really know why. I know a lot of purists argue against any changes beyond original, but I like to keep all the ones around here the same, because there's more than one guy using them. Replacing the battery with them all wired for negative ground minimizes the potential for damage due to improperly connecting a battery. Thanks Michael for the more technical input.

      Thank Byron. I really though I'd get this one in the shop over the winter, but I just didn't make it. At least it'll be an easy one to get back for use as a daily driver once I solve the radiator leak.
