John Deere 1938 Model A Antique Tractor Restoration

- I restored my John Deere 1938 Model A antique tractor (on steel wheels) that my grandfather gave me when I was back in high school. It took me working on it off and on for over 20 years. I finally realized I was in way over my head and enlisted the professionals. Regardless, an antique tractor restoration for the ages! Literally! I think the restoration turned out great! This is a video about my journey with the old John Deere and my grandfather, Pipa. I also talk about growing up at antique tractor shows, antique tractor pulls, Tennessee / Kentucky Thresherman Show, wheat threshing, mini rod tractor pulls, antique tractor plow days.
My grandfather was cooler than your grandfather! I didn’t get the tractor finished in time for him to see it. As we come upon Father’s Day it is nice to have the tractor finished up and to be able to reflect on all the good times with my grandfather. I think I’ll go out and drive it around on Sunday. Lucky Guy ........back in the late 60's early 70's I got to ride around on our Oliver 60 and 15 years ago I got a John Deere 1948 Model A but I sold her so some other guy could restore it but I never saw it again.......now just mowing the 3 acre lawn with a new John Deere 380 rider.
At least your current tractor is still green?!? Additionally, it would be hard to mow 3 acres with an old John Deere. I'm just trying to help with some positives! LOL
Great job on restoring the tractor , I bought a 1958 John Deere 420 w wide front end a couple months ago, I'm using it on our hunting grounds. Fixing a little at a time that needs mechanical work , maybe one day I will restore this one . Leroy
It'll be there ready (and probably working fine) when you are ready to restore it. These old tractors will just go forever.
Great restoration. He would be very proud to know that the tractor now has another life. Sometimes people don't let you know how they're feeling. That's ok too. You can sometimes tell by the expression on their face. There's something about machinery from the past that puts a smile on you're face.

I can get behind that. John Deere and the good Lord for sure. I might substitute Peterbilt or Kenworth and a RAM truck. But other than those minor 'upgrades' (ha) I don't see any issues here!

Ahhh...so nice of you to say that. I took it to a show I'd not been to with it in a couple of decades a few weeks ago. I've been working on that video. It is almost ready to go (and turned out great). It was so fun!

former neighbor has A #9, one of first 12 prototypes that did the Nebraska state test! It. was "lost" for 68 years on the way back from Lincoln but you can almost see Waterloo production from where the tractor was stored. so many more stories.
Mine is just an old run of the mill A nothing that special. It is amazing how many treasures like the one you describe are sitting in barns unknown around America. Future restorations! Thanks for watching.

Very nice. I use to live in clarksville tn. Actually 37 years. Now I live in Georgetown Tx. I’m restoring a Ford 9n. Yeah it’s a lot of work.
Worth it in the end though. All in I have spent about twice what the tractor is actually worth (but with things like this it isn't about the money). My grandfather always asked me why I wanted to spend so much money on a tractor that wasn't worth what I was spending. Maybe more money than sense!?!? HA! The grin on my face when I go start it up and run it is worth every penny! To me...not my wife! LOL

My granddad did both. I used to pull when I was a kid (back in high school). I'm going to goof around with this one on my property but no pulling anymore.
Joey, this is way cool. #1 seeing a former classmate, #2 seeing the stuff from the threahermans show from the days when I grew up. A couple years ago I got to carry my son to enjoy it, one thing hasnt changed, still scorching hott. Love seeing the hometown stuff. Ty for sharing

I found a jd 830 trying to buy it we had all jd tractors we had a and g and a 730. I love redoing the old jd
Those big two cylinder diesels are like listening to a music box for me. Love the sound of those things. I like the G's too but the A is about the right size for me.

What was the total cost? I have always found it way cheaper to buy a restored machine than to do it yourself. Family tractors not withstanding.
Absolutely cheaper to let someone else sink their money into a restoration (and then buy it after the fact). I've done a couple of different vehicles and you ALWAYS spend more than the end vehicle is even worth. The only exception might be if you do everything yourself (and I don't know many people who have all those skills). I spent about $17k on this restoration and the tractor is probably only worth $10k fully restored.
Thanks for the reply. I just bought a full resto 36 A for $5500 at auction the other day, and it was painful to spend that much. In the process of a fanshaft conversion on it from rubber to clutch fan. I plan to run her hard on my 40 acre farm, just as it was intended. No parades for this one. I just enjoy seeing them work. Thanks for sharing your journey.
@@derweibhai Good luck. Mine was used around middle TN hard for years. About every part I pulled off it was broken/worn out. Maybe one day somebody will buy yours after you wear it out. It'll still work fine! LOL
I don't know if anyone with respond, I want to restore a 1935 farmall, all the seals leak from front to back, where do I find seals and parts.
Well John Deere is still in business and they still make/supply tons of parts for the old tractors (especially gaskets, seals, etc.). So we ordered almost all the things like that from them directly (from a John Deere dealership). I'm not sure if anyone still does this for Farmall parts. Other stuff were supplied by aftermarket people who re manufacture parts. I'm sure people do this for Farmall (as they are still very popular). Get a parts catalog for your tractor and start looking the parts numbers up on e-bay and it'll lead you to right people/places.
There are usually 1-2 keck-gonnermans at Ky-TN are they one of yours ?
I went a couple of years ago and sat beside one that was running the Baker's Fan. I could listen to the sound of that motor under load all day. I might have teared up a little bit (turns in man card). My granddad stopped going to that show in the 90s (but yes up until then). My uncle has the tractor now and is restoring it. So maybe it will show up there again soon. I'm planning to take mine there when they have the show again (hopefully this year).

@@Coltonm8994 We thought about doing the same. Funny thing was my wife wanted to buy it more than I did. We could have done it. But I learned during the tractor restoration that I need to stick with what I'm good at...and it isn't farming stuff. Ha! Good luck on getting yours!
