Hi Rus
I love your videos , I watch them while i’am on the exercise recombinant bike at the ymca during our cold and snowy days in New England . Watching your ride videos really make the time past very quickly. I ride the Electra Ponto Go moped style bike . I’am 67 with horrible knees and back issues and able to go on 30 mile rides while peddling the whole time . Keep up the good content very helpful.
Hello Russ! Glad you getting better!
I know a person who lost weight. His diabetes went away! Great news Russ
For what it’s worth Russ, I got my A1c down to 4.7 by virtually eliminating carbohydrates. It takes 3-4 months until you get a complete red blood cell replacement. I lost 55 lbs over 6 months doing this, and it was easy and fun. 12:34
I bought an 82 pound beast - the Okai EB50 previously "Ranger" - 82 lb torque on a 750/1000 peak Bafang. It's a tank, but fast (30-31 on throttle!) Good component's, Shimano Techtro Brakes. Nothing exotiic but the frame has a built in display over the headtube. Looks really cool 😎 I love it and ride every day its not pouring rain.
Im over 65, I ride a 20 x 4" fat tire folder. Small, fast, good range, fun. The 26" are too big for me. Especially a fat tire 26". Im 5'8 160. I live in Arizona.
When I was in school way back in the last quarter of the 20th century we actually had class presentations on bicycle etiquette. I am sure there is something that can be exchanged for the time to learn life skills. Maybe some stories or presentations can be suspended to make time to learn about how to interact with streets.
To quote the great American poet Jimmy Buffett “Growing old isn’t for sissies” good luck Russ 👍
And so are Brackes 🚲🚳
Hi Russ. Good to see you wearing your glasses again. Yay, that the diabetes is doing better. Yes, I think all ebike riders should know the rules of the road. But only regulate the younger kids who do not drive yet. That makes the most sense to me.
If I ever decide to get another e bike, it would have to be a 24" wheel.
Russ i have hand built 3 E bikes so far, regarding age, i made the wrong choice 3 times, cause trying to get my leg over is hillarious trying to get a step through frame here in the UK on E-bay aint cheap, cor me bloody hip needs aid ... And remeber with age come Beauty or was it Wisdom ? lol
Hey Russ, I subscribed to your channel and I went back in your TH-cam history and saw that you sing and play guitar. I think you're pretty good! Yeah very good information about e-bikes and I listen.
Thanks!
The thing i have to remember is with an ebike i pedal but i dont necessarely exert myself but on the exercise bike i can make it harder to pedal and that's probably the issue to fix that i put no pressure on the wheel so basically just turning the pedals for me with my knees that's enough
Glad to hear you’re doing better with the diabetes.
Oh Russ Yout're a wild and crazy kinda guy...
.. with regulations it´s more or less always similar unfortunately. like with drones for example, restrictive regs without making sense are mostly not necessary for reasonable people but are made because too many idiots don´t know what they are doing. and this problem seems to be growing.
ps: nice to hear the reason for the glasses being back 😉
Yup, IT band. Have had issues with that for years and im only 30 haha. Its because we dont stretch enough. look up IT band stretches and that will be feeling better tomorrow!
Russ- Glad you’re getting better. Regulations pretty much only benefit the originator, and usually actually hamper the regulated. 20” e-bike are generally not-so-much good for trails, and 26” is too hard for this 80 year-old, 5ft 7 in guy to wrestle around. Bought a 24” Heybike Horizon in December. Carefully evaluated many 20 and 26 inch models. Wanted to stay legal (750/1,200 w motor, all lights, step-thru). Down to Engwe x24, and the Heybike Horizon-and would have gotten the Engwe because of the range, BUT the 1,000/1200 w is not actually legal for CA streets, which knocked it out of the running.
As an older California Gen X'er, I couldn't agree more with some form of certification for younger riders (16 and younger). Basic classroom education on road safety that can be applied to regular bikes, e-bikes, scooters, and skateboards. It would probably make it easier, without the need to get everyone registered and ID'd, to make it a part of the curriculum (like driver's ed was back in the day in HS). One or two hours, in your junior high (or late elementary school) years, would go a long ways to awareness and safety...and make as a good lead in for those who will eventually apply for drivers permits and beyond.
As for 18 and older (like myself in my mid 50's), that isn't required. We're adults and are held responsible for our own actions. Ignorance of the law is not a defense.
Russ, I purchased my Marantz from Macy's, New York store. But I was just a dumb punk and did not know any better.
Thank God you're feeling better but remember to warm up your body before any exercise regimen. Regulations for young people and adults because safety first. And to know the rules of the road, after all it is a motorized vehicle. And that goes for the motorist also!
Re the Cal regulations: Who is gonna enforce them? They have drag races and take over the local streets for drifting and the police seem unable or unwilling to stop it.
Easier to stop an old guy on an ebike than a hot rod drifting?
@@injuredtabletennisplayer1474 And a stiffer punishment.
And lines of looters allowed to wheel carts 🛒 of merchandise out of the store . 😂
@@EBikeBuilder_ So you can steal an e bike, but then if you it ride too fast you get a ticket?
🙁
How about using the schools and teaching a biking course. Once they pass that course they get a certificate to ride an e-bike. Just a thought.
Hey Russ seeing you in glasses is a great sign getting back to normal👏🏻CA won’t enact these regulations soon as they’re in a budget deficit. Area 13 addressed this a few months back stating the CHP would oversee it. But with other more pressing issues in my state I don’t see this being implemented for a while. I think height has the largest determination in deciding between a 20” or 26” ebike. Great video Russ as always 👍🏻
Good to know.
I believe Illinois limits ebike to 16 yr old or older. Best Buy had an Aventon on clearance for $600.
Hi Russ, love the video. After spending a year riding on what can best described as s medieval torture device-the Judas Cradle, I purchased a new seat that will give more cushion to my tush. It is easily three times the saddle it is replacing. My first year of riding was short distances around the neighborhood. Now I am going a lot further, twelve plus miles, and the last three quarters of a mile is on washboard gravel road. So, comfort took the slot for the first upgrade. I also ordered a pannier for the back rack. After my last ride, I am thinking, it may be prudent to bring along a few basic tools in case of a breakdown. Not for a major roadside repair, for minor things, like a flat tire, blown fuse, or tightening something that has vibrated loose. What do you think about sliming the inner tubes for flat tire prevention?
Try using Flat Out instead of slime. Many people report it as better than Slime.
@@RussIsRight Flat out is on my Amazon wishlist, but couldn't think of the name when I was writing the comment. The premise of goo filling the hole to plug the leak is the same. I'm thinking a little prevention is better than having to pull the wheel and tube to patch it miles from the house. Anyhow, it is on my list for my next purchase.
Hi Russ, I'm glad you are getting back to your old self, quick recovery we all hope. I have a question or two for you, I am wanting to raise my handlebar stem on the Ocelot Pro, do you know what size spacers I need to buy to do this, how far up can I raise the stem without putting a strain on the Hydraulic Brake Lines?
Next question, the chain ring that you replaced on your Cruiser "Wanna-Be", can I do the same thing to the Ocelot Pro even though it sits lower because of the 20"wheels? If so, I would like to know again, what and where to buy the part. I'm going to have my local bike show do this for me, they have changed tires on the ebike and a few minor repairs, I trust them.
Thank you...!
Sorry, I don't have an answer to any of these questions! I sold my Ocelot Pro and so I can't even measure it. But, I think if you put a handlebar stem riser, it could put more distance that perhaps the pre-cut brake line might have an issue with.
Good Morning my friend, I remember you saying that you sold your Ocelot Pro, but isn't the DEER-20 an Ocelot Pro on a suspension frame? I thought you raised your handlebar stem on one of your many Magicycle ebikes? i could use your expertise on where to buy the spacers, and what size spacers to buy.
Could you just take a tape measure and roughly check if the 52 teeth chainring will fit on the DEER-20? Is the DEER-20 frame very different that the Ocelot Pro Russ?
Hey, I owe you a couple of Florida Bike Trail rides if you ever come down here, lunch too! Thanks Russ.@@RussIsRight
@paulshaar4187 While the Deer 20 is an upgrade compared to the Ocelot pro, I am not sure it is the same dimensions on parts. The upgrade I made on another model from Magicycle was the handlebar adjustable stem, not a riser, on the Commuter ebike. That bike is totally different from all other Magicycles and has different sizes for everything.
Russ, I enjoy your videos. Not much riding happening in michigan in February!😮 you take me for virtual rides. Thanks
I remember retail stores and malls. I shop online for everything except groceries. I live in California and I'm glad that they want to regulate ebikes and younger riders. The fast Surron type bikes (> 28mph) should be illegal and confiscated. All riders regardless of age should wear helmets. I see so many college students riding bikes without helmets, safety vests, and bike lights.
Dual motor is better for hills. No doubt. Like your show
Hi Rus, Could you help with a after purchase online warranty claim , Love my rad bike and have a valid claim with bell broken its a small claim but is attached to brake lever so its a $25 replacement, this is my only claim owning it after 6 months , they sent me a handle bar bell and told me that's all they will do, i cant remove old bell as it is part of lever. never again will a buy a bike without doing my homework on after care. i will buy the rite one and fix myself. by using one they gave me 2 bells on bike but only one works its a safety hazard id rather have one that works just 1
Sadly, I don’t have any pull to get warranty issues resolved with companies. 🙁
For hill climbing, the more torque the better as you need a certain amount just to overcome the total weight of the bike, rider and cargo.
For the same hub motor (and the electronics that supply the motor), a smaller wheel will provide better mechanical advantage as they do for braking with the same brake setup. Torque is simply force acting at a distance (radius) from the axis of rotation. Divide the torque by a smaller tire radius and there is more force acting at the contact patch.
For mid-drive motors, divide the motor’s torque by the gear ratio (chainring/rear cog) to figure torque at the rear axle (we’ll ignore friction losses to keep it simple). After that, it’s the same calculation.
Good explanation. Thanks!
Russ...you make excellent points about regulations...and I'm OK with it at 16 since that's when you can get a driver's license in most states. And education HAS to be a part of it. There should be parental consent, too.
The ones whining about regulations are the ones most likely to CAUSE those regulations to happen.
I'm reading of a LOT of people (mostly younger...some older and still dumb) looking for eBikes that do 30mph...and more. The more the lines are blurred between eBikes and motorcycles...the more eBike riders will suffer.
Hey Russ! Have you seen the new Helmet and lights called Aura from Unit 1 just coming out of production stage on Indiegogo? They made the Faro with the LED array at back. This is simpler with LED lights, directionals and wireless connected lights like Lumos, but MUCH lighter, with suoer ventilation (I hate hemets on hot days) the lights are magnetic strips, much nicer than Lumos IMO, -its expensive at nearly $500 for all of the gear, but is survival abd staying alive valuable to people? It is to me! Still waiting for shipment of my Backer kit, over 4000 people invested in it.
I have not seen this.
RAD bikes sent me a paper advertisement with a discount code...post card...first ebike to ever do that...to me....
I got one from Lectric, but bought the AiPAS A6.
I'm a 67-year-old Berkeley, CA resident. My daily rider is a white, 2019 RadCity 3 Step-Thru with panniers and a few other mods. Berkeley is an outstanding biking space. Anyway, I agree that eBikes are still so new that we need to deliberately add some ground rules for appropriate use to our collect common sense. As a kid, I had older kids and adults around who modelled responsible riding, there were posters on the walls at school about safe riding, and we need to reintroduce those messages about concern for the safety of others and responsible riding back into the culture.
A1C is easy to control. Intermittant fast and cut out most of your sweets and starches.
I disagree with California regulating e-bikes and I am an e-bike riding resident here. First, although most regulation sounds good, what ends up being law is generally something altogether different. There will be fees associated with regulations and that will be used to establish a new branch of State government. Let’s call it the e-bike safety department. It won’t be long before it becomes obvious we need additional staff to properly administer this regulation because kids are still kids and are still getting injured while riding their e-bikes. And so are older people so we need to start regulating them too. Not only will that make the e-bike world safer, it also expands our fee base so we can hire even more staff. I hope you can see where this is going.
Regulating what should be covered by common sense never works. And suggesting regulating someone else because it doesn’t affect you or your age group is very short sighted.
I'm against regulations, even for kids. In this case, the problem e-bike "hooligans" aren't going to pay any attention to rules/regulations anyway.
Concur 100% 👍.
I was born & raised in CA & started riding bicycles @ 4 yrs old. A Class 2 Ebike is not a motor vehicle as defined by Federal Law. So bicycles are not regulated except for visibility @ night on public roads period.
Yes If I can clearly see up and down the road at a stop sign and there is nothing there I speed through it non stop LOL 🥳🚴🚴♂🚴♀
I'm completely okay with e-bike regulation for people under 18. I saw on a different channel that New Hampshire is thinking of regulation if not outlawing e-bikes. The human brain isn't fully developed at the age of 18. The pre-frontal region isn't fully developed which is the region for judgement and discrimination. It's why kids do dumb and risky things before they get a few years older. It's why insurance rates are higher for young male drivers than female drivers of the same age. Then we have to ask, "What is the going to be the upper age limit?" Bikes of any kind can present a danger to motorists but I think bike riders are going to lose out in a bigger way than two cars crashing into each other at 40 MPH. This risk is higher for bikers, scooters, or even motorcycle riders. I like California but there's a huge culture war against anything Californian. One sure way for it to not happen here is for California to make a law, any law around an issue. Our goat roping legislators will do the exact opposite.
That doesnt explain people driving before all these laws and no issues.
@@Trillville43 Slower cars & a whole lot fewer people might explain it.
Gotta be 18 in Illinois to legally ride an ebike on roads.
If you are over 180 pounds or come from a background in mountain biking, you'll probably be a lot happier with at least 27.5" wheels, mid-drive motor, and front suspension. Get a step-thru frame if you have balance issues. Small-tired overweight ebikes with poor steering geometry and no front suspension are miserable beasts on anything but glass-smooth paved surfaces with no transitions (i.e. street to sidewalk, gravel to pavement, curb hopping, etc.)
The conformation of styles between the producers of ebikes is a result of a financial issue being solved. By utilizing similar frames with battery compartment and controllers built in to it a huge costs of manufacturing is reduced utilizing standardized components. Batteries made for these frames are about a third of the price of a specialized design construction and the controllers standardised to fit are dirt cheap as well. Motors are getting stronger and less expensive as well due to standardised construction, commonly running 48 volt systems of various wattages. What's happened is that ebikes got way better and much less expensive in the process, look back at the initial offerings they were under a 10 mile range with a 15 MPH top speed, a 24 volt system from heavy lead acid batteries and an external chain driven fork or stay mount. These prototype toys were commanding thousands of dollars for their purchase new, if you could even get your hands on one. I think the tiny 12" to 16", "little kiddie" style folders that are available for a few hundred dollars might become the economical mobility solution for those needing to get around huge outdoor events, exhibitions or shopping centers, all they have to do is put on a setting where the maximum speed with the throttle or assisted is only 6 MPH for crowded or indoor situations, I'm sure people would get used to folks puttering about the street and mall walkways and in the stores and shops.
Larger wheel diameter makes for more traction and smoother ride, especially over rough terrain.
I from California and most of the kids here drive reckless . And i think its because they don’t know any better. So I agree that there should be some sort of educational program for them .
I love my Catrike Dumont Trike and will never go back to sore neck, sore shoulders, nub wrist, lower back problems and Brusing between the legs.

Can you review a trek ebike?
Have not been offered one.
I like 26” (inch) wheels, and I would say the resale value of 26”is undeniable.

Just one. Go to www.russisright.com. You must pick up in the Chicago area.
Cars were trying to run over me during the 2020, 2021, 2022 and the onlookers were laughing. lol I also saw an ambulance and police cars were all around. lol.
Bikes (bike and a gang on bikes) rammed hard into my bikes 3 times. lMany onlookers and police cars were around. They all ran away very fast. lol
The gang on bikes rammed into my bike 2 times. One rammed into my bike, my bike fell down, then I picked it up, and the 2nd one rammed into my bike. lol .
And the 2nd time, a bike rammed hard into my bike from middle of the street behind cars. lol
😳
I meant a video on aftercare lol
Watch the slippery slope. Before you know it buying a bicycle will be like Japan. A purchaser can not take delivery until it is registered.
If you are noticeably a foreigner on a bicycle you are very likely to be stopped and asked for papers.
Glad to hear that your eyes are getting "worse" again!
Don't be mean m8 damn dude.....
He’s just joking. Getting back to my glasses is like getting back to a prescription, so it is technically worse.
New bikes?? Are you ready to sell your Deer?😂
Not yet. Sorry!
California's thinking is you can't have an ebike but here is some dope paraphernalia to smoke meth and do fent
Won't comply to criminals ever. Period
Just another means to tax citizens. Calif needs money
Less cars on the roads and more bicycle 🚲🚲 you won't have to make rules up just to get more more from the people wake up and standup to these people that are trying to run your life vote them out of office wake up people kids can do better than most adults and learn faster than you all think.😊😊😊😊😊❤❤❤ Take a stand people bike to work. Vote against this religion and vote for your bike rights .😊😊
The only regulation should be on the maximum speed and motor power.
Only regulate speeds not the wattage of the motor
The government now regulates flying little toys and has basically shut down the hobby. Imagine what they are going to do to e-bikes. But don't you worry, criminals with guns are not enforced.
Regulations are a slippery slope. First start with the kids, next thing registration fees , special liscensing, speed restrictions. Thats how it is in Europe 😢. I vote no new laws.
If you live in California then I do not feel sorry for you.if I lived there I would leave on a skateboard if I had too.😲
You Commifornian's love your gov't regulations! You people couldn't survive without them.
You can tell when an ebiker doesn’t have a drivers license 😂 i see lectric kids riding the wrong way down the wrong side of the street. If they don’t know how to drive a car, or ride a bicycle, they probably shouldn’t be riding an ebike in the street with traffic 😂😅 i don’t have a problem with drivers license being necessary to ride e-bikes on the street with cars.
Why are you blowing STOP SIGNS???????????????
It is safer for me than stopping constantly. I slow down and look. If nobody is there, I keep going. If cars or people are there, I stop. Asking my local police about this, the officer said he understood why. This question has been asked many times before so long time viewers know why I do this. But new viewers don’t. So there you go. 😊
I feel like a person should have a driver's license before riding an ebike.
On a daily basis I see people driving vehicles who have a drivers license, and can't drive worth a crap, or obey the rules.
If you’re going to be posting videos of riding your bike please follow traffic laws. Almost every video shows you blatantly running stop signs. If you’re trying to educate people this isn’t the way you should be doing your job videos. Remember safety is paramount we as e-bike riders are already under attack. Your videos of violating the traffic laws isn’t doing us any favors.
Watch this video and read the comments on it: th-cam.com/video/-j_PAEg6s0E/w-d-xo.html
A basic mantra to follow: If California is pushing to regulate something, just do the opposite. 😉
