We fished the rocks in southern Ireland like that, except we would use a small raw potato with a small slot to pass the line through as a weight, if the fish dives in the rocks you don't get snagged, the potato breaks off, had some big wrasse with this method !!

Really good to watch this! And good to see Fish Locker giving things a go on the lighter side....fair play to him for not dismissing this kind of fishing and taking the time to learn and appreciate a kind of fishing that is totally alien to him. I've actually gone and bought some really light braid and a jig today....so hopefully...after learning all this from yourselves....will catch something unusual. It's not about the size...it's all about fishing...just that...fishing...and getting out and about with other lads who enjoy the outdoors and the thrill of the hunt. By the way....that Gurnard was stunning!

So much of what you guys are doing reminds me of how we ice fish. Using the lead to make a disturbance on the bottom is what we call ground pounding. The pen grip is also our preferred grip method.

Thank you John I never knew there was such a club or type of fishing, don't tell anyone but it is how I got my kids into fishing, we were river fishing and the kids were getting bored, I noticed there was a large shoal of Minnows just under our feet so lightened the tackle and bait and within seconds they started to catch quite big Minnows and they were hooked they loved it because they were catching not watching, I have to admit there were a few flying fish, the poor Minnows never knew until my kids hooked them that they could fly, seamed the fish and the kids could learn, they are now serious fishermen and women, now teaching their kids how to fish and a couple of them have had some nice sized trout switching to sea fishing now, this might just be a good introduction for them.

Its mad when i think back we use to fish with very light freshwater gear off the rocks and the older lads would say thats no good for shore fishing the rods n that are too flimsy but would catch loads off mini species and to see lrf take off is great if ya see where im coming from we were lrf fishing back in the early 90s and didnt even know it lol

That was epic! I have never seen a man look so happy to catch a tiny fish! Well done John it's been a long time coming! Be interesting to see if you could implement the same method off the boat anchored on sand.

Interesting stuff, unfortunately I'm about as far as you can get from the coast east and west as you can get in my country. Would be nice to have the tackle in the boot when I go for a day out with the family 👍

I’m sure it can’t be good to target tiny fish.
Might be fun but do you think they survive? What size hooks are you using?

Personally I would never use the 'pen' grip. Here in Germany anglers habitually use it when drop shotting. I've seen rods yanked from the hands of three different anglers probably hooking up on decent chub, perch or pike. Apparently it's not uncommon for Ice fishermen to loose rods and reels due to them using the same grip. To me, having the leg of a fixed spool reel between my middle and ring finger creates a naturally supportive rod rest. I think the 'pen grip' (and yes I have given it a good go) doesn't offer the same security and in fact places the rod in the hands weakes position in terms of resistance to a sudden and unexpected downward pull. Sorry, this is not a rant, just my thoughts based on my own experiences.

That guy is gona cause himself some serious issues fishing with his hand like that. Doesn't matter what type of fishing you are doing biomechanics is biomechanics. Not good for your wrist, ulner or hands.
