    I've always assumed the physic being strong against poison was a "mind over matter" thing. You could get sick, but with a strong enough will power you can continue going through life as if you weren't.

      Also, if you're psychic, you can detect poison.

    • @themurmeli88
      @themurmeli88 ปีที่แล้ว

      It could also be that psychic is the "mental" power, as in intelligence, and intelligence has created antidotes.
      Also, it could be related to the "purging" your body of toxins -thing.

    • @RaynmanPlays
      @RaynmanPlays ปีที่แล้ว +26

      I think it has to do with poison being kind of an "unseen enemy"/assassin thing. The whole idea seems to be that psychics can detect assassins. While the Dark type took over this role in some respects from gen 2 onward, they seem to be specifically anti-psychic assassins, which is why they're weak to fighting.
      So poison type implies physical assassin whereas dark type implies psychic assassin.

    If you think about Psychic type as "Mind type" or "soul type" and Fighting type as "Body type" then the two's relations with bug and poison start to make more sense. If poison is a substance which destroys the body, it wouldn't be very affective against the mind/soul of a person. Bugs on the other hard are piddly and inconsequential when it comes to hurting the body of a human or animal of similar size, but they are quite terrifying, destroying the mind's concentration, rendering psychic type a poor match for bugs.

    My theory of why Psychic is super effective against Poison is, that back in Gen. 1 the Psychic Type may have been intended to be something of a Light Type, countering Poison, which was in part a stand-in for the yet nonexistent Dark Type. The Marsh Badge's Japanese name means "Gold Badge" probably because gold as a color is sometimes associated with psychic powers.
    Then in Gen. 2 they appear to have changed their mind on that, making Dark immune against Psychic.

    I'm sure there have been other hard Pokemon Tower Rival fights, at some point in gamer history.
    The reason that fight is seen as super easy is that you can't progress in the tower until you get the Silph Scope from Celadon City, so most players go there first, but the Rival's team is balanced around the player facing him as soon as they reach Lavender Town, which makes him a lot weaker.
    Also, No Guard only comes with Gen 4, Machop line only has Guts in Gen 3. Lots of people have difficulty remembering the various changes between the generations.

Essentially, it was a baked clay biscuit with a stamp on it that supposedly imbued it with anti-poison powers. They actually did work against an ingested poison if someone ate it soon after: much like activated charcoal today, the clay would absorb the posion in the stomach and let it pass through without absorbing into the bloodstream.

    Okay, I'm no linguist, but Bulbapedia says the Japanese psychic type translates more accurately to "Esper," or "ESPer" I think, which is someone that has "extrasensory perception." I think the reasoning for psychic being strong against poison is that an ESPer would sense someone sneaky with a poisoned weapon coming after them or be able to perceive the poison in a poisoned food/drink item and thus be able to stop the poisoning before it happens.
    Just look at Espeon: it’s not just the Psychic Eevee, it’s quite literally the ESP Eevee.

    To answer your questions about poison types strengths and weaknesses:
    Poison vs Ground. Sand filters are used to isolate and remove toxic substances from water.
    Poison vs Psychic. A lot of people will say "Mind over Matter" though this is a bit misleading because psychic doesn't resist poison, it's just super effective against it. Still a good short hand though. That being said, the better explanation would probably be that psychics are able to detect and neutralize the poison before they have a chance to infect something.
    Poison vs Normal. The true answer to this is likely just that GF wanted to have a type that was just general overall with basically no weaknesses and strengths. You could make an argument for basically every type having a reason for being super effective against Normal. For that reason, if you're weak to everything, you're weak to nothing except for stronger Normals (aka, Fighting) XD.

    I have been summoned with questions about poison type matchups. I don't remember where I heard this but supposedly, psychic is strong against poison because the mind is stronger than what can affect the body. Poison is weak against ground because hazardous wastes (which make up part of the poison type) are buried underground to neutralize them (even though the ground itself isn't stopping them, they're put in sealed barrels).

    To your type question:
    Psychic types put up barriers and manipulate over distance, so it's obviously good against smog, acid etc.
    Ground negates poison, it sucks it up and it slowly vanishes. Over the contamination course the ground can't grow plants.
    The other type interactions that you mentioned aren't picked for balance reasons. It makes sense, that flying should also be strong against poison and weak against psychic, but they are really picky with their type balance. Don't overthink that part too much.

    Psychic has a few theories: it can "foresee" the poison to avoid it, mind over body, psychic shield, or it "knows" how to detox it. Ground = charcoal, which is the original antidote to many poisons (I think there was an interview where they confirmed that).

    My theory with Psychic type being strong against Poison was because during conception, Psychic types possess mystic and curative powers. Most Pokémon that learned Recover were Psychic types (or evolve into one) in Gen I and II. And Rest is a Psychic type move as well. I kinda understand how Ground RESIST Poison, but I don't get how they hit them Super Effectively.

  • @lockdwoods6665
    @lockdwoods6665 ปีที่แล้ว

    Seen a couple people answer but in regards to the type matchups:
    Ground is strong against poison because sand/graphite filters can be used to remove toxins from water and even the human body. (Many accidental poison consumptions are treated with graphite pills that help to absorb and insulare the toxins so your body doesnt absorb them)
    Psychic is strong against poison because of "mind over matter" philosophy. If i remember correctly a more literal translation of psychic type from the Japanese is "mystic" which is why its used for everything from ESP to Wizard themes (Alakazam vs Braixen). Aesetic Hermits and Darmas were said to be able to cure and filter poisons from their body simply by being so intune with their own body they could choose not to digest or absorb them.

    My take on the „psychic/poison“ thing was the idea of overcoming a poison or disease with sheer will power. That kind of thing.
    In „Dungeons and Dragons“, monks get resistances to poison eventually, because their extreme mindfulness allows them to just overcome this kind of stuff through their strong will.
    I think that‘s kinda the justification.

  • @bodyzergcasting

    The explanation of psychic and poison interaction is that with knowledge and study (which are the characteristics of psychic type) you can discover antidotes to poisons

  • @unremarkablechannel8194
    @unremarkablechannel8194 ปีที่แล้ว

    2:56 I think of it as sort of the same reason that Psychic is strong against Fighting (brains over brawn). If you take Psychic to be the "smart" type, then Psychic-types would have more knowledge than most Pokemon about what something should or shouldn't smell or taste like, so they would be more able to detect poison in their surroundings or food. Also, Psychic-types can mostly read minds, so they would be able to spot someone thinking of poisoning them from a mile away.

  • @rositchi5889
    @rositchi5889 ปีที่แล้ว

    It's funny you mention that about poison. In Temtem, poison is super effective against water types due to the contamination reason. That is an interesting question though. I like Hazama's explanation on it. They say "mind over matter". Now, when I think of Psychic, I think of normal people in real life with abilities like reading minds, seeing into the future and being able to commune with ghosts. This is to explain why dark and ghost are super effective to them. I can't forget about bug though. Maybe they're weak to parasites?

  • @dariusdrake7515

    @3:15 I believe that the logic behind "Psychic beats Poison" is that Psychic is the power of the mind, and stories of things like the placebo effect reducing the detriments of minor poisonings. Either that, or it's supposed to be that the Psychic Power manipulates the poison in the Poison Type's body to attack themselves, which is also reasonable.

    In hindsight, you may have wanted to use the moves Brick Break, (Or high jump kick with wide lens), Shadow Ball, Meditate, and Recover. The limiting factor to this move set would’ve been an opponent you could set up against, and while tough, you probably could have set up against lances Gyrados earlier using this method.
    That does remove the psychic against Agatha, so I’m not sure how effective shadow ball would’ve been against Arbok and Golbat, but it would still have likely worked in your favor.
    Still, you won regardless. Congrats.

    1. Shadow Ball is a Physical Attack in Gen III, so that means you could have basically used it to rip through the Alakazam every time you face it once you get it in Celadon City. Buggy early games were buggy lol
    2. Psychic beats Poison I believe because it takes great cleverness to outwit and heal or will out a Poison, hence why a Psychic type could easily overwhelm it. No idea why Ground does though, lol

    Hey MDB, great Challenge again.
    I have two ideas for some challenges. How about a Vulpix only run, this one in gen 4. It can learn some decent moves and fire is decently strong in Sinnoh. I think, you might get an interesting run out of it. The second one would be an Eeveelution run. Not to hard i guess, but you need some easier runs from time to time as well. If you want a harder one, you should go for gen 2. You get at maximum 5 and in crystal you should be able to evolve all before the league. The easiest should be gen 4 in Sinnoh. You can get 7 in total with a wide variety.

    Pure Power/Huge Power definitely are great abilities, but to get the most out of them, you have to intentionally EV-train in Attack, and you probably want to also reset for good Attack IVs. What makes the ability so broken is that it doubles not just your base Attack stat, but also all the extra points in Attack that you get from EVs and IVs.
    And yeah, Bruno's Machamp doesn't have No Guard... because No Guard was introduced in Gen 4.

    As a poison type fanatic, I can tell you that Psychic being good against poison is because they interpret Psychic as a “mind” type and it’s like meditating/having a healthy and strong mind can dampen a poison in your body. It’s kinda weird to explain, but that’s how I’d explain it. Also poison should 100% be good against Normal and Water, the type needs the buff

    I always assumed psychic representing the mind, hence why things people are scared of are super effective (ghosts, the dark, bugs) meanwhile it is strong against poison because the mind is what finds cures to poisons and diseases, it is also strong against fighting because brain > brawn and that sort of thing.
