I was 6 in '95....I can't believe I saw this in theaters (twice) when it released. My mom was very young as well and raising two girls by herself (we didn't understand any of the innuendos at the time of course). Yeah, I don't think she's a snob. Sure, she's blissfully unaware of her wealth and privilege. But you get the sense she doesn't see herself as better than others generally. That's what gives this movie it's charm really. She's not vindictive, like say Regina George is, and is actually well meaning in a lot of her things. And when something mean happens it's blatantly shown to be so, like when Tai calls Cher "a virgin who can not drive" which was CLEARLY a mean verbal slap.

The movie is based on the classic novel Emma by Jane Austen. In that the main character ends up with her sister's husband's brother who has known her since she was a baby and is 16 years older than her (shes 21 and he's 37).

Saaame. Sometimes they're defending the honour of the female characters more than I am as a chick.
Whereas there are too many male commentators who just aren't fun to watch at all. They either spend way too much time creepily lusting after female characters, take their "manhood" too seriously to enjoy a chick flick... Or worst of all.. they're just completely dismissive of female characters in general.
I think male MCU commentators/podcasters are the worst. Most of them practically drool when talking about the male characters but treat the female characters either like eye candy or second-rate side characters no one cares about. And a lot of them are blatantly sexist too. Never found a single one I liked at all or who actually respected the female characters.

Cher (like Emma in the novel) is basically super sheltered and naive. Here it's mostly because she's a privileged teen, as in the novel, but you can add a very protective father in the book as well. In the 2007 (maybe 2008?) mini series they leaned into it very hard, but it's there in the text as well, that Emma's father basically kept his daughters near him out of fear that they'd die or get ill. Which keeps Emma very ignorant of what's actually going on.
In the background you can often see students walking around with plasters on their noses as if they'd just had a nose job. :D

The reason why this movie is so overlooked today is because now almost everyone is clueless. She's not dumb, she's clueless, but now that concept is lost. This movie is brilliant because it's a simple idea done so well: teens being clueless, in everything they say and do. Judging it as if it's serious, is also a very clueless thing to do, which is my point 😋
Also "step-siblings" is not a thing. Brothers can be either siblings (at least one common parent, thus blood-related) or step-brothers (not related). It creeps me out to hear people say that...

Clueless was a 90s version of Emma. Someone spends too much time thinking (superficially) of others’ and meddling in their lives that she oblivious to her life, her problems, her love life. Not until she really pays attention to others that she begins to change and see that these superficial projections are insecurities she sees in herself. I think that it’s a classic because it was able to translate the themes of Emma in a more contemporary setting, well, the 90s without veering too into the expected cringe and formulaic recipe of the typical rom-com vehicle. It wasn’t too deep, too superficial, but had charm, wit, characters, and it’s accessible.
