This actually almost made me cry. My own mother believes in this and for years I've been trying to talk some sense into her which has put a permanent stain in our relationship. These people are horrible.
When my grandmother died, we began getting threatening collection calls. They were saying my grandmother was not paying her $1000 a month pledge. We learned she had given her life savings to these clowns, and we also owed thousands to the old folks home and hospital and funeral expenses. This 100 year old woman was not competent at the time, but we never recovered a cent of the $200,000 that this criminal trash had stolen.

Of all the horror stories I've read here today I am commenting on your because my maternal grandmother was a born again Christian from the 1930's into the early 1980's but poor, and yet she forced her children, my mother and aunt, to grow up in even more poverty and even hunger because she had to go to church and give them $. When television came and those televangelists she gave them $ too. These criminal trash as you called them steal from families, not just the person being duped into their lies. You made that point so well.. and I am truly sorry for what this did to your grandmother and you and your parents.
Jesus stated about the small muster seed becoming a big tree. In fact, Jesus talked a lot about doing great thing while having just small faith. We should start labeling the Prosperity Gospel as cult.
Well this story hits home, my dad started following an evangelist and instead of receiving treatment for his prostate cancer he went to one of this guy's services and had him place his "healing hands" on him for a cure. With medical treatment he had a 90% chance of living but you can guess how far prayer got him, it got him buried. I'm still furious about it 7 years later.
For someone who has Lupus and grew up in church, this hit on such a level. I had so many people lay hands on me after I was diagnosed in high school and it jaded the hell out of me. Also these type of preachers are EVERYWHERE and they are bastards.
Do you know the Epic channel of 'Genetically Modified Sceptic'? He studied the Bible SO WELL, its amazing! His videos on Christianity overall are so good. Full of facts; great comment-sections also!
The saddest part of this well-researched episode is that the people who need to hear it most probably can’t afford HBO or are too conservative to ever watch it.
Is that really sad when JO actively ostracizes conservative viewers by misrepresenting them and attacking strawmans? Either conservatives are the enemy to be dehumanized or the human beings to be listened to and aided, but not both.
Darth Bart bang on the nail👍 makes you wonder if the religious zealots have read the Bible at all, if so they must be exceptionally selective about what passages they read.
.Upon seeing said Whip, Lupus Larry exclaimed, "Hey, Mr. Roper, Mr. Furley; Look what Jesus made. A Whip. It is a miracle!" To which jesus replied; "That, is not funny. Just wait til' my Dad, i mean myself, hears about this!" Then, he flipped the table and everyone lived happily ever under. End
I actually have lupus and, believe me, I would throat punch any televangelist who says this. Most people with chronic debilitating illnesses live in poverty because they can no longer work or afford the medical help they need and become desperate to be well. Preying on the desperate is unconscionable.
Don't take this the wrong way. But the first thing I thought was; 'Oh god, the amount of House-jokes that Mal Lock must endure....' I seriously wish you strength to deal with those. Assuming that they make them.
Okay, that cancer bit made me really mad. I was diagnosed with a rare form of ovarian cancer at the end of last year. For the first few months of 2020, I went through an awful regime of chemotherapy which, even tho it’s over, is still affecting my hands and cognitive abilities. So knowing that someone tried to turn the horror and fear that goes with facing a cancer diagnosis into monetary profit, preying on someone so vulnerable, makes me immensely mad.
It's a fairly common practice to pray on the weak and vunerable, they are like vultures, if you see a wealthy preacher you are looking at the Devil. You know he's in it purely for the money, the worst kind are the friendly, warm, amiable and cheerful kind, conmen.
I'm a Christian. I've been receiving chemo for bowel cancer. I've been praying that the treatment is very effective. Sometimes the struggle is part of God's plan to build character. But it's still for my good. I will give money to God but it's not payment, not purposely for selfish gain and while faith can move mountains I trust God will lead me along paths, even difficult ones, for my good. Even in death I will be in his loving hands.

I was a victim of some of those preachers in Metairie, Louisiana. They instructed me to give money for tithing to gain god's favor. After a few weeks, I was asked to talk with one of the head preachers on a Saturday. They had not received my tithing yet (church members had to write a check, or put 10% of their income into an envelope, write their names then sign on the back of the envelope) I told him that I had been giving my tithing money to charity. He shook his head and then told me that if I wanted to gain god's favor, I would have to give my tithing to the church before donating any of it to charity. My heart sunk.

From an athiest's point of view, your faith would have to be pretty weak if you believe your best chance of winning God's favor is bribing him. If God was real, I'd imagine he wouldn't approve.
ManiaMac1613 A) Don't be a douchebag. B) From their perspective, they aren't "bribing" God. As was said in the video, these televangelists preach that money is a symbol of God's favour, and that sowing a "seed" will result in your contribution coming back to you many times over, thus giving you God's favour. I'm not saying that it's a totally logical belief, nor am I saying that the entire thing is anything less than despicable. But the way you're portraying these people (those who send money to these televangelists) is completely disingenuous.
These people weren't trying to "bribe him" to cure their cancer!!! Donations to (seemingly) good causes is bribery??? No! God will reward acts of generosity and selflessness. I don't think the woman in the video thinks that donating will "bribe God" to cure her cancer.she believes in doing the right thing. I doubt any money she had could have helped her cancer, so she decided to instead give it to what she thought (correctly or incorrectly) was a good charity, who needed it more than she did. Maybe she believed that by doing the right thing, she'd likely be rewarded after life. It's not like she was giving money to God "bribing him" for anything, she was doing the bight thing, selflessly donating her money to charity (not directly to God: lol, a bribe has to be payed to the bribee to be a bribe, not donated to a charity). God rewards actions of selflessness and generosity, just like he rewards countless other good deeds, but doing good deeds because you believe you will reap (Cont.)
(Cnt.) ...reap later rewards is not bribery. What Christians believe is that good deeds on Earth, making sacrifices for the greater Earthly good, will result in rewards in heaven. If you want to look at THAT as bribery, go ahead. God asking people to make the world a better place in exchange for the prospect of a good afterlife is not a bribe. And if it was, it would be a good bribe, what harm can come from making the world a better place?
hWhat're Yedoinson Stephen Malacaria He isn't being a "douchebag", he stating the obvious. Let's be real here, the people who fall for this sort of thing are some of the most gullible, shallow-thinking, desperate people alive. These are people who lack any sort of critical thinking skills and are easily whipped up into a frenzy just by spouting a few flowery words. These are the same types of people that could be made to kill and strap bombs to their chests just by extorting their faith. Anyone who has read the Bible knows that it is absolutely meaningless to give money for blessings. ManiaMac1613 is absolutely right in saying that these people are trying to bribe God for favors. While they might not be directly "giving money to god", what they are doing is giving to "charity" so God will do them favors. This is just a round-about sort of bribery. It's the whole, "if I do X number of good deeds, God will give me X as a reward" mentality. Virtually all major religions preach against this way of thinking. This way of thinking is greedy, shallow, and spiritually vacuous. The Bible encourages charity, it does not encourage charity for reward. THE ENTIRE PURPOSE OF CHARITY IS TO DO GOOD WITH NO EXPECTATION OF A REWARD. If you are giving your money away for the sake of curing your disease, getting more money, etc, then you are doing the exact opposite of what charity is meant to be about. This sort of thinking uses God as nothing more than a slot machine where you put good deed tokens in and get rewards out.

Bold of televangelists to call themselves Christians even when Christ on several occasions said to not make money off of faith. They are pretending to believe in God, but they worship money.
There are multiply ways to interpret those old, old texts. It's how extremists work, they twist the original meaning of these holy books to suit their own narrative. But the "original" meaning is still up for interpretation, really.

@@atorsionx9406 Yeah. All churches twist it to fit their own narrative. Some of them just do it to try to be nice, helpful, honest, and good, people. Mind.. their narrative doesn't always "result" in any of these things, if they hold to idea that are untrue, and actually hurt people. Problem is, for religion, its real hard to only accept that which you know *is true*, instead of just *wanting to be true*, and still follow religion. Why? Because people place value on what they "want", even if its not actually possible, practical, or even particularly plausible. There is a difference between wanting a new car, which is at least plausible, and exists, vs. wanting the moon, which even if it exists you can't have, or wanting to be like Harry Potter, which is neither real, nor attainable. Personally, I find much of what "faith" offers to be somewhere between wanting the moon, and wanting to be a wizard, in way too many cases.

Also, considering that crucifixion kills by suffocating you by weighing your body down upon your lungs as you hang by your outstretched arms, it doesn't really matter whether your hands are tied to the cross or nailed to it. The Romans practiced crucifixion by nailing and/or tying. Inasmuch as tying didn't cause puncture wounds that might marginally contribute to blood loss and shock and got infected (thus hastening death), getting tied to the cross is actually worse.

My grandmother had Alzheimer's and after it was obvious it was getting worse the whole family went for a visit to grandma's. My mom and her sister had the uncomfortable conversation about her not living alone anymore. While we were there they discovered that she had lost thousands on a crap-ton of things like over 100 magazine subscriptions, many of which had as many as half a dozen copies of the same magazine. She had also lost a ton on donations to some preacher who they later discovered had promised to cure my grandmother with prayer, a tactic which worked because my grandmother apparently knew she was getting worse and was desperate to get help. Anyway, they quickly realized that many of these people knew full well that my grandmother had dementia when they took advantage of her. But the really crazy part was when my mom was on the phone with somebody from the preacher. She was canceling the monthly "donations" when she suddenly gasped and started crying. I was too young at the time to know what was happening, just that my mom was crying when my dad went over and talked to her. Then suddenly he was angrier than I'd ever seen him, grabbed the phone, and unleashed a torrent of profanity that was positively shocking. Years later I heard from my mom that when she tried canceling the payments the preacher or their representative had told her that if she did god would punish her with the same disease and that she "wouldn't even recognize her kids." When she told my dad he went absolutely apeshit on that person, to the point where they tried to file a police complaint after my dad threatened to track them down and do some things to them that were...anatomically unlikely.

They misuse the bible to make false promises to exploit sick and poor christians in need! This is serious fraud and a shame for christianity and the name of Jesus! In my sight they are like parasites on the body of christ. All the bibleverses they misuse from the new testament to build their false "donation-seed-faith", their false "give-to-receive"-teaching (Mt. 7,2, Lk. 6,38, Mk. 4,24-25, Mt. 13,8, Mt. 13,23, Mt. 19,29, Mk. 4,8, Mk. 4,20, Mk. 10,29-30, Lk. 8,8), all these verses have nothing to do with donating money to pastors or churches in order to receive something from God! There is 1 verse in the new testament that says something in this direction: 2 Cor. 9:6 - but as you can see in verse 9, it is about supporting poor (Christians). And its also illegal to use the old testament promises on tithing, because tithing was old covenant (Jews) only, in the whole new testament tithing is not mentioned once as a duty to christians. And what they don't want you to know is, that in the old covenant it was not possible to tithe money, only animals that were born on the land of israel and food that grew on the land of israel - fishermen did tithe nothing! Servicemen did not tithe anything either! And they did not have to tithe money instead. Christians did not receive any tithes for serveral hunderd years after Jesus. But then the catholic church adapted tithing from the old testament in the 7th century in order to financially stabilize their new form of monologue-type church, when it were originally just personal meetings at peoples homes. One of the oldest and deepest problems of christianity is, that many people want to live off the faith, to earn their money with it. This always brings negative consequences. For this reason, to be independant, Paul worked as a tentmaker. But as christians it is also not our call to produce or attend some kind of monologue spiritual entertainment. Our call is to believe and trust in Jesus, yes, and to live in mutual love with our christian friends (1 John 3,23), being there for one another (Gal. 6,2), entering more and more a satisfying life of togetherness (Phil. 2,1-4), and in this life of love together God will give real gifts to the people to mutually serve each other even better (Eph. 4,16, 1 Cor. 12,31, 1 Cor. 14,26).
Of course it does. These people are insane and greedy evil people. Who only care about themselves. Greedy, yes, and constantly using religious fears to maintain power and prosperity, but many have the intellectual capacity of armadillos . Codie Osteen’s healing of cancer shows that while faith can be a vital element to recovery, it’s important to take the advice & treatments of medical professionals into account: They can often serve as the vessels for God’s healing to come through(every case is different though, sometimes). I think the “I want it now, my way” flair that’s wrapped around society over the decades has made us sometimes see spirituality as an ala carte service for miracles & prosperity, but we have to remember why we say”Patience is a virtue”. God knows us better than we do & gives us what we *Need*, when we Need it.
Maddening thing is, there was no Jesus or Lucifer. This is all so stupid. Every church rakes in money, not just televangelists. The Catholic Church is rolling in money. The Bible is an old myth that so many people have jumped on and used for their own means. Funny too, because even what Jesus was supposed to have said, "Leave your belongings and follow me," was TERRIBLE advice and would have been the worst thing the men he wanted to follow him, could have done. Their wives and kids would go starve and who cares? Back then women and children were belongings, chattel, like slaves, y'know, property. They didn't matter. So, it didn't matter if they died. Fuck the bible, fuck religion, fuck these B.S. gods. Grow up people and use your brains.

Black Hippy as someone who went to catholic school from kindergarten till the 7th grade one of the first things we are taught in religion class is if someone claims to have God speak through them, they must first prove its true without a shadow of a doubt, if they are found to lie to you they don't deserve your trust.
The reason is the very thing you said. It's because these people are so very gullible. These self proclaimed preachers know just how to work the system.
99.9999999999% of people that give money to these scammers are right-wingers. It's because they've been brainwashed into thinking that the repubes are the party of god. @Derek Nah. People will always want something to look forward to after this s### existence. Some way to justify living, and some way to justify telling others that suicide is bad. After all, if your life is hell, what's the point in living it unless you believe there's some reward for persevering, and some punishment for those who are making it hell? And even though science can explain a lot, we will never, in any single lifetime, be able to explain with absolute certainty how and why the universe even exists, why faith and human psyche seem to affect the physical world (they do in subtle ways that we don't understand but have documented), or other things. Religion will always be around, but recognizing BS would at least reduce predatory religion and cults, and make people more willing to do what's necessary to survive (as opposed to saying "God will take care of all of my problems, and if he doesn't, then I just wasn't faithful enough, or else it is part of His plan) and thrive. Not exactly the same outcome, but better than what we have going on now, certainly.
Derek Along with a lot of the other bad sh*t that often goes with it: gullibility, misogyny, racism, homophobia, lack of awareness of the “other”, lack of awareness period/lack of worldliness, shying away from new experiences, exploration, & education, etc, etc, etc.
unfortunately televangelists arent the only ones preaching bs about cancer (thanks conspiracy theorists), and it is also unfortunate that our society is not good at holding people who preach bs accountable
That's the PREACHER'S WIFE. They still do that nowadays. Not just by Kenneth Copeland and that wife of his, Gloria, but also by those other Christian evngelical preachers. Their religions are scams with the sole purpose to grift.
It's Gloria Copeland, Kenneth Copeland's wife. Well, I had chemotherapy and it did a great amount of good - and they got NO money from me! But seriously, Gloria Copeland should be held accountable, along with all the preachers who said you shouldn't wear masks etc during COVID-19. One (Greg Locke) even said he'd send anyone wearing one out of the church! These people are evil.
He just used that jet to save a lot of people from Afghanistan. What have you done besides judge others? God works in mysterious ways and this may be a moment in which the Lord provided a jet not only for him, but for others so that their lives could be spared.
That philosophy that extreme wealth is a result of moral living is funny, reminds me of good old Calvinism, which kind of boiled down to “your fate is predetermined, f*ck the poor and unfortunate, because they’re clearly destined to be evil”
I tried to convince my Mom that the evangelist she watches on TV, and sends money to, was caught driving a Ferrari, but she did not believe me; Her own son. She thought the show I had watched was lying.
My mom was the same. She spent her entire life watching these guys, sending them hard earned money and confessing and 'claiming' money, cars, and mansions - that never came. She died penniless, senile and alone at a shabby seniors home. People get addicted to these schizophrenic preachers the same way kids get addicted to candy. Because the false promises of power and wealth taste sweet, and give a rush. But in the end the people who consume it are sick with a pseudo-biblical kind of mental illness and superstition. I have absolutely NO IDEA why "churches" are exempt from paying taxes!!! Maybe it made sense back in the days when the pastor lived in poverty in a tiny house behind the church, and virtually every cent given by the congregation was used to feed the poor. But alas ... those days are long gone!!
Those days never existed. I mean, sure, there were and still are pastors like this but they were and are the exemption not the rule. I'd also posit that those pastors would be like this wether they were pastors or not.
It just shows how unaware you are, and were not listening to John Oliver either! At the beginning, he said there are churches that help the poor, feed and clothe them! There are many, many churches and Christian Charity Orgs that operate medical clinics in other countries, have half-way homes for those battling addictions, feed and shelter the homeless, help orphanages in other countries, support poor African Villages, etc etc etc! But then, there are Pentecostal Faith and Prosperity Churches and there are super - rich mega churches such as those listed in this show! Even these, most probably, do some charity work, also! The 'Faith and Prosperity doctrine,' by the way, started in Africa!
'Those days' are not 'long gone'! Just because you are unaware and no longer participate in a church, does not mean there are no churches that continue to struggle to pay basic bills, help their charity and pay something to their Pastor!

ManiaMac1613 of course an athiest would think god is a man, world doesnt revolve around you kiddo

I may not be religious, but didn't Jesus drive people like this out of a temple with a makeshift whip made of rose stems?
To subsequently get to wear a crown of stems with much larger thorns.
What was driven out were money changers (Roman money was considered unclean, so other nations currency was changed for a fee) and animal salesmen for sacrificial animals. Turning a temple courtyard into a bizarre.
Not to mention, Jesus was all about that stoic lifestyle and preached heavily against a life focused on wealth alone.

@@atorsionx9406 I mean, given that he flipped a table and started whipping people cause they were selling and money changing in a temple. He definitely wouldn't appreciate these church-mall hybrids that exist
Yet, an overwhelming number of professed bible-believing Christians voted for a man who worships money and said he has nothing to ask forgiveness for. Explain that.

The UK has a series of laws around churches, it's called the "Public good" test. you have to prove that you do ACTUAL not for profit work. For example, there's no disputing the Salvation Army does charitable work, hence the tax exempt status. The Church of Scientology is taxed, because they operate like an MLM, and don't do anything "not for profit." If the IRS finally got their shit together and crack down on these crooks there'd be a whole rank of people in Club Fed. Could even be an Evangelists' Wing of a prison.
@@ravenandstar It's one of the reasons why they say Australians and Britons are "over taxed," when in reality our living costs are a lot lower. A tiny percentage of those taxes fund universal health care. Never do you hear of people in either country going bankrupt or losing their house because of a "medical debt." We have a fairer system of deductions, and neither is perfect, but much better off than the average American overall. Those GOP morons have people convinced that anything "socialist" is "on the slippery slope to communism." The quickest way to shut them up: "imagine for a moment that your mum has cancer, but you have to let her die because you can't afford the treatment. Now imagine that everyone contributes to a fund where everyone gets treated with no out of pocket bills. Your mum gets treated, and you don't have to pay ANY bills for it." That's the reality of universal health care, but these morons keep saying "I don't want to pay for someone else's hospital bill."

www.mirror.co.uk/news/world-news/expert-claims-jesus-christ-wasnt-7591220
Duck Face okay, you said researches. The link you posted was a newspaper article about one "research" that wasn't even peer-reviewed.

I agree
@@sstaners1234 I also agree. It's surprising though, that they're not all "greedy geniuses". Greedy, yes, and constantly using religious fears to maintain power and prosperity, but many have the intellectual capacity of armadillos . The history of evangelical-types coming to the New World is tarnished from the get-go. The "pilgrims of Plymouth Rock fame are a revealing example. Yes, they did flee persecution by the Church of England , seeking the freedom to practice their beliefs 'as they saw fit. And, they found such freedom, ........
in Holland !! Bu6t Holland had religious freedom for all faiths , and they were not about tolerate that , believing themselves to be the only true form of Christianity . So, they headed to the New World, (to the chagrin off our First Nations people. Jumping ahead to fairly recent times, various evangelical brands are as bad as one might expect from knuckle draggers with a unique and especially vitriolic hatred. Following the mass murders at a gay night club in Orlando, Florida, Baptist preacher Rev. Jiminez of Sacrament, Ca., stated publicly that he was disappointed that more hadn't died and expressed the wish that those hospitalized , not recover. His sentiments were echoed by numerous evangelical leaders across the nation.

Jesus... "Leave your material belongings and follow me"
Televangelists... "Leave your material belongings with me"
🤣
The accuracy on this comment lol

Why are people so gullible and why are these scammers not facing criminal charges
The reason is the very thing you said. It's because these people are so very gullible. These self proclaimed preachers know just how to work the system.
Mostly old people or very desperate people that have issues seeing reality due to trauma.
99.9999999999% of people that give money to these scammers are right-wingers. It's because they've been brainwashed into thinking that the repubes are the party of god. This particular type of preaching goes on nowhere else in the world, with the possible exception of India (on a much smaller scale). Yay Oligarchs, Libertarians, & pure Capitalists! 🤢🤮🤬
Derek Along with a lot of the other bad sh*t that often goes with it: gullibility, misogyny, racism, homophobia, lack of awareness of the “other”, lack of awareness period/lack of worldliness, shying away from new experiences, exploration, & education, etc, etc, etc.

that woman preaching about cancer is a danger to society and needs to be held responsible.
unfortunately televangelists arent the only ones preaching bs about cancer (thanks conspiracy theorists), and it is also unfortunate that our society is not good at holding people who preach bs accountable
Ah yes, as Jesus famously said: "get to heaven by buying a private jet, see you there bestie ❤️"
Yes, it's in the gospel of Judas
Well it got to be faster than angel wings.
I mean, when they crash, they will certaintly be in either heaven or hell.
He just used that jet to save a lot of people from Afghanistan. What have you done besides judge others? God works in mysterious ways and this may be a moment in which the Lord provided a jet not only for him, but for others so that their lives could be spared.
He also gave $15 million in aid for them as well.
That philosophy that extreme wealth is a result of moral living is funny, reminds me of good old Calvinism, which kind of boiled down to “your fate is predetermined, f*ck the poor and unfortunate, because they’re clearly destined to be evil”
yep. it has it roots in calvinism.
I tried to convince my Mom that the evangelist she watches on TV, and sends money to, was caught driving a Ferrari, but she did not believe me; Her own son. She thought the show I had watched was lying.
That's really sad, clearly your mom has been brainwashed. I wish you could at least stop her from donating money, what a waste!!
And the only thing I could ever do is let her go, and learn the hard way. But you're not alone. It helps so much to remember that you're only accountable for yourself.
