    Hi Benjamin, I am from NSW Australia and I have ordered one of your central desert hunter 2.0 in faux desert hardwood. I can't wait to test it out on targets and I plan to use it to hunt rabbits, hares and hopefully foxes. Thanks for making this product, I was trying to find a proper aboriginal throwstick to use when I stumbled upon your throwsticks and I am really impressed with what you are doing and how you present your throwsticks. I wish you every success!!!

      Pierre,
      Thank-you for the kind words. Your CDH was shipped and is in transit. I remember which one it was. It's an amazing stick which is buoyant across a range of velocities. The harder you throw it the farther it goes, but it goes straight at slower as well as faster speeds, which makes it great for hunting. I hope it helps you remove some of those non-native, feral animals from your continent! They cause so much damage! Long range is easy to achieve but accuracy takes a ton of practice. Keep the stick away from sharp rocky terrain as much as possible. The CDH is my premier model! Good hunting!

      Thanks for the reply, I am so happy to hear I will soon be testing out one of your throwsticks! I will let you know how it goes when I have it. I don't expect to be able to hit anything at long range (at least for a while) but often animals jump up when I am walking my dogs and I hope to stop a few with the karli. But I will enjoy just playing around with it either way.

      Hi Benjamin,
      I have received my throwstick, thanks for getting it to me so quickly, as you can imagine I couldn't wait to get it and I am so glad I didn't have to wait long. When I first held it I was really impressed with the simplicity of it. I had to wait until the next day, which is today, to get it out and have a throw and I have to say after a quick play I can see it is much more beautiful than it looks! While I certainly need a lot more time to be proficient with it, the potential excites me to think what I can do with this weapon. I pulled off a few beautiful shots out to about 30 metres, though not with consistency yet but it was a massive buzz!
      I don't want to put it down and I can't wait to get it out tomorrow. Unfortunately I get home and it is right on dusk plus my shoulder is not as strong as it once wad so I am limited at the moment, but I can't wait to test it out for distance and I look forward to improving my accuracy, especially out to distance which I will improve with practice. I truly feel I am going to enjoy this for a long time and it will be useful to me as a tool/weapon for my purposes. I can only imagine the effort you have put into creating this with thought, money, time, energy, tools, machines, experiment, etc but I find it one of those rare things in life that is totally simple and totally awesome. Thank you I could not be happier with my purchase.

      It's great because it provides a lot of places to hang small targets from it. I am making so many throwsticks for customers and doing research on long range tuning that I don't have much time for target practice, but the net is a great way to go. I got it from Memphis Net And Twine.

    I was thinking Ben, maybe you could make some targets to throw at. Like full size cardboard kangaroos, turkeys, Emu etc. Or just a paper outline of it. That someone could cut out the cardboard for themselves.They have some Kylie games like that. It could be s foam target that pops back up. Just an idea. Those fly really well. What material are you using for your back stop? I have some golf ball netting. I thought about using that.

    • @Throwsticks
      @Throwsticks  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Sorry, somehow I missed replying to this comment. I'm using some nylon netting from Memphis Net And Twine. I have thought of making some fun targets but haven't had a chance yet. In fact I haven't had a chance to do any video making in some time, as I've been so busy filling orders. I have a friend who makes nice kylie targets out of durable pipe. When he hits them they explode into 4 pieces on impact.
      Mainly for target practice I like to aim for the center of soccer goals at a park near where I work. I throw out at about 100 meters. Whenever I hit the center area of the goal I'm really happy.

      Thanks for the question and I'm glad you enjoyed the video. It's fantastic that you have original craftsmanship from Australia. Most of my sticks are right handed but we have three models in left. The Stinger, the Whale's Tail and we can also make the Karli in left handed by custom request.

    The maximum range on these throwing sticks is amazing!!!! Do you happen to know the effective range of these weapons against small/medium game?

    • @Throwsticks
      @Throwsticks  5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I have put estimated effective hunting ranges for each model I make on my website in the descriptions. It has a lot to do with tactics. The kylies which are turbulated slip through the air like a knife through hot butter and retain substantial energy out past 100 meters. They also weigh up above a pound in some cases, so we're talking serious energy being thrown around. The overall velocity is about 40-50mph but the wing tip velocity is similar, making the outside impact of the wing incredibly powerful. We bust holes through plywood shed walls all the time. I feel the energy is about the same as a well thrown sling stone.
      So in terms of hunting, accuracy is the biggest issue. With practice one can get quite good, but it takes quite a bit of skill to strike a target consistently at even 50 meters. The stick will fly straight and level, but the thrower may not direct it well. I personally feel that a throwstick is dangerous to small/medium sized game at any range that it travels. At over 100 meters, a flock of geese would be in extreme danger from my long range sticks. However, an individual goose would be an illusive target to hit at even 60 meters.
      So the tactic is long range against groups of animals and short range against anything. A deer's leg is easy to break if struck properly, but we don't advocate hunting of large game with throwsticks due to concerns of animal cruelty.
      A throwstick can slide against a smooth area without weeds, but it does not penetrate through brush and weeds like an atlatl dart can. It is really a weapon that should be used tactically. In a survival situation one would tend to target waterfowl, turkey, rabbits in areas where they are plentiful, small deer who travel in groups, and even large birds in flight.... The other thing they would target is any opportunity where they didn't want to waste a bullet, an arrow or other projectile. The kylie can be retrieved after the throw and so opportunities can be taken which would otherwise not be chanced.
      Thanks for your interest in what we're doing. You're more than a wannabe and I enjoy your channel.

    with the wirlki model, was it shaped that way so that a hunter could use the "hook" end as a puncturing weapon?

    • @Throwsticks
      @Throwsticks  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      This is a fantastic question, so I will give you a full answer based on my own research. The hooked kylie or "wirlki" came from the Northern Territory of Australia and they were traded widely. They performed really well at moderate ranges and were often quite large in size.
      In the case of hard wood, the hook could be fragile and they were known to sometimes break. They were placed on the back of the stick, probably for this reason. When reversed and put onto the front, the flight characteristics of this particular stick are improved but the ergonomic balance is disturbed somewhat. With polycarbonate it is possible to place the hook on the front since it's such a sturdy material.
      It has been speculated by historians that the "langa" or hook was used in tribal warfare as something that would hook onto enemy shields. I'm sure this is true in hand to hand combat, but it does not work when being thrown. Any who have asserted that idea, have been mistaken. I have done those experiments and can confirm that it doesn't work at all. It seems the hook also allowed the Aborigines to mimic Emu and thus achieve a closer stalk on any prey who could be tricked by that tactic. Aborigines were experts at animal mimicry.
      My own view is the langa allowed the Aborigines to make a very stable throwstick and quickly tune it for practical use to moderate ranges, by adjusting the carving or warping on the hook. The hook is very sensitive to this and thus a powerful tuning tool. As long as the throwstick was being used at distances below 50 to 60 meters, small adjustments to the langa could be used to control the way the throwstick traveled. These adjustments are crude and less than ideal, but they are possible. If a throwstick were made green and its tuning changed as the moisture from the instrument evaporated, the langa could be adjusted to keep the stick in tune. They were made from tree trunks with the langa being formed from one of the roots of the tree. Also, in the common case where the tree did not have an adequate bend in its to allow one to make a stable flying throwstick, by adding a langa to the stick from one of the roots, the stick would be stabilized in flight and allow the hunter to make throwsticks from trees he wouldn't otherwise be able to use.
      I personally find this variety of throwstick to be really beautiful. When made in polycarbonate the langa is very sturdy and I have pierced it through plywood. It forms an effective piercing and trapping weapon like a tomahawk. I do not like this style of throwstick for ranges beyond about 60 meters because it lays over to the outside (curve it's flight path) at long ranges. I feel it's not an ideal design for long range use, but I sell it because it's something that was used historically, and at shorter ranges it really is amazing and effective. Historical throwstick artifacts of this sort are highly prized and can fetch thousands of dollars when sold in auction houses.

    I can see the difference in the one that is shaped like the emu. What are the differences between the others... is it the art, weight, tuning, or overall shape? Just curious.

    • @Throwsticks
      @Throwsticks  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      This was our starting lineup in 2017 and we've continued to develop and retire models since then. The main differences at that time were historical/regional inspirations leading to a range of prices and performances in keeping with the originals from history. In terms of performance we differentiate models based off the amount of labor to make them resulting in a range of prices. The high end sticks perform magically and the lower end sticks are still impressive. Listing all the details would require a visit to the product pages at www.Throwsticks.com but there are differences in range, weight and overall philosophy for the models. The Central Desert Hunter now does 120+ Meters straight flights and we have a war club, survival multi-tool which is skull shattering. Depending on your application there are better and worse sticks to choose from but each one has its specialty and niche.

    I always wondered what the difference was between using one of those versus just throughing a stick sideways.
    Is it just added distance or is it also the ability to keep up it's rotation to still get that wack as well as that broad hit or was it the Foil shape which dose offer more of a penetrating effect when it hits.

    • @myperspective5091
      @myperspective5091 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      It would be nice to show a head to head video with some ballistic jell.
      Throughing a stick sideways is good for hitting wings and legs of fast moving prey but is it also good for hitting small prey like rabbits or gofer.

    • @Throwsticks
      @Throwsticks  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Robert Swift,
      I'm not sure how we'd do against ballistic gel, given that the kylie kills by blunt force trauma and not penetration. I don't think it would penetrate very far because the ends are blunt and large. A baseball bat wouldn't do well against ballistic gel either, but I wouldn't want to be struck with one....
      So in answer to your other question. Yes to all three - the wing's shape adds distance by allowing it to fly. It also allows it to hold its energy by reducing drag to a minimum so that forward and rotational energy are maintained at as high a levels as possible out to long ranges. The wing is specifically designed to be very low drag and utilizes turbulators to maximum advantage for this. The narrow edge provides a sharp penetrating blow which can break bone by concentrating the impact of the weight of the throwstick into a small area of the target. It does not draw blood, it just breaks things badly.

      Those always seemed to me to be a take down or tripping tool like a bola, or at best a knockout or stunning tool and not a killing tool.
      Mostly used for fast running medium sized prey, or also for large sea birds when they are on the ground.
      My assumption was that a spear, knife, or club would be used to deliver a death blow.
      Those must be good at a specific hunting range of between 50-150 feet in mostly open terrain.

      This video is out of date in terms of the performance of the models. The most versatile model in our lineup is the Central Desert Hunter 2.0. • @Throwsticks
      @Throwsticks  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@michaelswart490 Yes, the Central Desert Hunter and the Whale's Tail would both take deer or antelope by breaking the legs. They have a lot of power and can easily break bones. Probably some of the other models as well. We also are able to custom make an extra large Central Desert Hunter that weighs almost a full pound and would be more than adequate. Historically throwsticks were used for deer hunting in both America and India. But we only endorse doing this practice in survival situations. While leg breaks can prevent the animal from getting away (unlike with firearms and archery), they do not kill the animal and so another weapon such as a knife would be needed to finish. This is not a humane way to hunt when other alternatives are available, and it is not legal in most places.

      Just checked it out. Great work. Good to see videos on kylie golf finally make it to the web. I wanted to film Gary Broadbent doing this, since it seems he invented the sport, but we didn't have time. He made 2 eagles in a day. One at 270 ft and the other at 260 ft. I think it was like hole 7 and 14 at some park we went to. The G-10 beak nose kylies will do more than 200 meters. They are small, lightweight, and very thin and dense, but it requires a really snappy hand speed. Gary's never found a disc golfer who can beat him. He's always well above par on every course he throws. He can curve sticks around trees and do whatever he wants with them. Really amazing.

    is the rabbit stick good for squirrel hunting too?

    • @Throwsticks
      @Throwsticks  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Matt,
      If you sneak up on those little buggars and hit your target then surely it will destroy them. I have ground squirrels around here that eat my orchard and my garden. They always have a guard posted and I've never hit one with a throwstick. I guess it would really depend on your environment. We have thick weeds that get in the way. In an open plain, or the side of a tree, the shot would be good. But it depends on the behavior of the specific animals. If you threw a stick at a group of them from 100 meters away, would they startle by your throw? If not, then I doubt the stick itself would scare them until it was too late. For close range, I've heard of tree squirrels being hunted with a tomahawk successfully before.

      Well..., to not directly answer your question..., I just got back from the World Boomerang Championship in Albuquerque, yesterday. I am friends with multiple world champion boomerang throwers and I know most of the others. Many of them own my work. I have also been taught how to make boomerangs by my good friend and multi time world champion, Gary Broadbent. But I have purposefully avoided making and selling boomerangs in order to focus on kylies as weapons. I want to avoid the confusion between the two items. Boomerangs are toys and kylies are weapons.
      There's a slim chance I may make boomerangs for sale some day, but I really prefer to just point people who are interested in boomerangs towards my friends. I enjoy throwing boomerangs sometimes and my favorite type is the MTA. My friend Logan Broadbent's website is www.loganbroadbent.com/ where he sells boomerangs. He just won 2nd place at the WBC. He's an amazing athlete and great guy.

      I felt like the answer to my question was obvious but at the same time I didn’t see any boomerangs when I checked your website. My next question would have been inquiring about what you have in stock for southpaws. Thanks for your response, you have been very helpful!

    • @Throwsticks

      We make our Whale's Tail for southpaws and have a few of those in stock. I am also able to make the karli model for southpaws, but it's not featured in the order options so would need to be made to order. If you order a karli then just send us an email stating you want it left handed, and we'll do that. That would take a few weeks.

      Until I found you, I never heard of a karli, I definitely would like to buy one. Which one do you make (for southpaws) goes the farthest? The thing I need to work on is to get over the temptation to throw them at people, lol.

    • @Throwsticks
      @Throwsticks  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The karli is going to have the longest range of the two because its turbulated airfoil eliminates form drag entirely. I should be able to get you something that beast 100 meters straight. It is difficult for me to tune left handed sticks, but we hope that in the future we can hire a left handed thrower to work with us and allow us to produce all of our models in left handed versions. For now, this is the highest performing model we can produce for a southpaw.
      If you order it, just order a karli in the color option you wish and drop me that email and remind me that I chatted with you on youtube ;)

      Thanks for the hypothetical. They have taken down deer and kangaroos but those hogs are quite tough. If you got a good leg shot and were willing to finish off with a knife the way they do with dogs, then it may be possible. But check with local regulations and stay safe. We don't really advocate hunting large game with our products unless in a survival situation.

      Definitely. When we first launched our business I threw this video together by myself (no camera crew) in just a day or two. I was pleased I was making sticks that performed so well by that time, but most of the footage needs major updates as the current sticks we produce perform far better than seen here and after now half a decade of practice, so do I.
      I have been able to show some accuracy skills since 2017, maybe particularly in the Wedge video and Stinger vidwo, where I hit small targets at 25-50 meters, but it will take until future film projects to fully showcase what's possible. I've been too busy to produce more films for the last year but hopefully next year we can get some together. I will need to get together a film crew to do it right.

    (bare)bow vs Boomerang, pro's and con's

    • @Throwsticks
      @Throwsticks  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Great question. An overview I can think of off hand for use as a hunting tool. As a weapon in battle the boomerang is inferior to the bow and arrows. But as a hunting tool things are different.
      Bow Advantages
      Deployed well from cover
      Deployed in heavy brush.
      Accurate on stationary targets
      Penetrates flesh, allowing for take down of large game
      Bow Disadvantages
      Relatively short lethal hunting range (only about 30 meters max in most cases)
      Arrows difficult to match spine and weight to achieve consistent accuracy, and very fragile and easy to lose.
      High level of accuracy needed to kill instead of maim game.
      Bow and arrows are not multi-tools, having only one purpose.
      Arrows can only take out one target at a time so not good against groups of animals.
      Wounded game can escape and die while they bleed out.
      Wet weather can make bow non-functional depending on string material.
      Boomerang Advantages
      Deployed from long ranges (60-100 meters hunting ranges possible)
      Weapon readily available/deployed rapidly on targets one wouldn't even try to engage with a bow.
      Good against running targets.
      Good against groups of animals and capable of capturing multiple targets in a single throw.
      A multi-tool useful for many other purposes in the field besides hunting and thus carried in hand constantly.
      Breaks bones, often stopping game from escaping or killing more instantly than an arrow.
      Boomerang Disadvantages
      Accuracy depends on finesse of thrower and is more difficult to maintain than with a bow.
      Not as reliably accurate or lethal on single stationary targets shot from cover as a bow.
      Not deployed from cover very easily.
      Gets caught up in heavy brush, limiting use in some terrains.
      Deployment at close range can startle game due to thrower's movements.
      Does not penetrate flesh and larger game must be taken through breaking the leg with the boomerang.
      These are an overview of my thoughts on this question. Hope that helps.

      @@Throwsticks wouw thanks. Comment on the bow part. Pretty mutch all modern (barebows) (fast flight, B50 and B55 flamish twist) bowstrings can handle rain quite easealy. Archery takes allot of practice to master, especialy the draw weight is tricky. But with my 60" and #60 recurve takedown I van still hit a human sized target 8/10 easialy. I think I'd rather get hit by a Boomerang than a bow. I'd rather get Both my legs and a few ribbs broken than a broadheaded Arrow sticki'n trough my guts.
      Bows can be used to hunt small game like Birds and rabbit but it's better to use FLU-FLU arrows with large feathers and sometimes even wide (Putin) broadheades to increases impact surface. The con of this however is that a FLU-FLU Arrow is quite useless beyond like 20 meters, so the Boomerang definitly winns the rabbit hunt + searching for missed arrows from tall grass is a true pain In the arse.
      About the spine, you can tune your arrows by shooting it without feathers. And with bamboo your arrows Will be quite concistant. And with even cheap carbon it's almost exact. But in a bushcraft situation I'd rather make a non-returning throwstick than a bow, a bow has to be more refiened to function at it's best. However, if I'm goin hiking I think I'ma Just pack Both in my quiver ;).
      Thx for commenting and also thanks for checking out my channel (I got the notification). You keep doing what you do best!

      @@cherno2232 Totally agree with what you said. My comments were aimed primarily at the historical hunter/gatherer situation with use of sinew bowstrings and primitive examples of each weaspon. Modern bows like you're using are a different story compared to making bows and arrows in the field. Comparing modern hunting boomerangs to bows, I think it's best to have both on hand as you said. A boomerang such as our Karli Model can fit into the quiver beside the arrows quite easily, and be available for that rabbit on the run. We've had bow hunters add one to their setup.
      Have fun!

      Yeah I agree. I'm able to do a great job of tuning the Karli model on a back hand throw and so that has worked, but I haven't developed a good left handed throw yet and so I can't handle the heavier models. The Stinger is a truly ambidextrous stick so we do those two. These are our two most popular models so that's good, but I love some of the others and will keep working on developing my left hand throwing.

    G'day Mr Scott,
    Please reflect on the following which I quote from 'Jean Kearney, Aurora Intern and Terri Janke' with respects to Australian Indigenous Cultural and Intellectual Property Rights.
    "Indigenous Australian arts and cultural knowledge has been passed down in cultural practice (including ceremonies, on country transmission, paintings, songs, dances, stories etc.) for many generations. In recent years, the demand for Indigenous cultural products has grown rapidly: Indigenous artworks are in high demand, Indigenous imagery is reproduced on all manner of products (e.g. on T-Shirts), and Indigenous words and motifs are being used as brands and logos by Australian companies. There is similar demand for Indigenous Australian cultural knowledge for use in medicines, foods and technology.
    Consequently, Indigenous cultural heritage has often been distorted for commercial gain. Indeed, the commercialisation of Indigenous Intellectual and Cultural Property (ICIP) has often been done without respect for Indigenous cultures, without consent or Indigenous legal authorisation, and without benefit sharing with Indigenous communities. This is leading to the gradual erosion of Indigenous cultural heritage. Indigenous people call for adequate protection of Indigenous Cultural and Intellectual property rights to enable them to protect their culture and to share in the benefits from the use of their heritage where appropriate."

    • @Throwsticks
      @Throwsticks  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks for the respectful note and concerns Joe. We share the same concerns for tribal people's rights and the positive celebration of their heritage and genius. We donate a portion of profits from every sale to Survival International to support tribal people's rights, and so we are giving back to indigineous people globally for the heritage of primitive technology we share in. Many of these people are being murded and having their ancestoral lands taken from them. The problem is particularly bad in Brazil right now and they could use all of our support. When we neglect the human rights of those with no voice, we create a society in which we may become the next to lose our human rights.
      I have never been to Australia and I learned throwstick making and tuning through independent reseach. This is a childhood dream for me and a life long obsession. I have sold many throwsticks to Aboriginal peoples and offered to sell their own work through my website whenever there was interest. Unfortunately in Australia what I am doing is now nearly dead.
      On a broader scale, I do not consider any primitive weapon's technogloy to belong uniquely to any one people group, including this one. It was Egyptian, Indian, European, and of course Australian. These things are inherently dispersed throughout history beyond their borders, and belong to those who are masters of them. It is respectful to pay homage to heritage and the Aboriginal Australian work is ingenious and deserves to be honored and credited as the the inspiration of much of what I personally do. The pragmatic spirit of the indigineous Australians allowed them to blend form and function together in ways which cannot easily be surpassed. Anyone who admires it has every right to imitate it. To say otherwise I think is to divide people. I would consider it a crime to not honor the traditions I am inspired by, as much as if I pretended that I was actually a part of them.
      We market our products as function and beautiful but not as authentic, and never as artifacts. In any work I do in hard wood I brand in my logo just to prevent it from being sold as something it is not.

      Yeah, more like a rushed production. Raw personality but not much of a script. I was running the camera and the whole show on a time crunch, by myself. The point was to show the flights not the accuracy of the thrower and it didn't even show that very well for half hte products.. Quite simply, I missed my mark. I was aiming at the net. This film is out of date, representing only the product lineup in 2017. It's now legacy film and yet I still haven't had time to replace footage for some of the items, which perform much better than their demos. Namely the Whales Tail and Rabbit Stick. Videos have been updated for the others, with some products being obsolete as well.

      @@dp7933 My initials are BS. More of the dry humor, right? I was trying to hit the net, not go over it, mate. That was my only goal and I failed even at that but the flight was adequate so I went with it. My time crunch was an established business launch time had been set already, a limit of daylight and weather was available, I was standing on my neighbor's property, working for a company at the time as well 45 hours a week plus commute. So days off to film were very limited altogether. I wanted a continuity of cloud cover and light for a matching film across all products, if possible. I was filming solo. Besides this I was coding my website, developing and manufacturing my products, doing my video editing and posting, doing my social media promotion, going to my day job and eating and kissing my wife and kid when I could. I went with the quality of video I could produce at the time with plans to follow up later on. If you want to see my small target accuracy check out our Wedge War Club video or Karli Goals video for longer range on soccer goals. The point here was just to launch a fledgling small business into flight and that I did. Enough said. There's nothing really here.
