Don't Try This At Home - How Tough Are Polycarbonate Throwsticks?

  • This novel, cringe worthy and extremely boring video was recorded in one take. It features the destruction of a granite boulder by the use of a polycarbonate throwstick. The boulder aside, no throwsticks were apparently harmed in the production of this video, although the thrower got very tired....
    Spoiler alert: After more throws than we want to go back and count, the stick didn't ever break.... If you have the patience to do the count for us, please leave the number in the comments section below.
    But how tough are polycarbonate throwsticks? After making and selling many hundreds of them internationally since 2017, with many subject to significant abuse, only a few have been reported broken in that time.
    Every piece of polycarbonate is unique. We've had reports of a few sticks breaking when coming into sharp contact with hardwood trees, where the edge is captured and stopped abruptly at whatever the sweet spot is that over stresses the material for a given mass distribution. Also, sub freezing temperatures can make polycarbonate more fragile than otherwise and make breaks more common when throwing in that weather. Although the stick in this video didn't shatter, we have been able to shatter one particular stick in other tests in as few as 11 throws in extreme conditions. These tests were conducted as hard as we could throw against large boulders, at point blank range. In any case the durability results are extremely impressive.
    The bottom line is that polycarbonate throwsticks are very durable. In spite of this they can possibly break and we don't warrant that they won't or encourage our customers to abuse them so that they would. Don't try this at home. Be safe, sane, and respectful of your throwstick. Throw at softer targets. But whatever you do, have fun!! With a product this durable, it's meant to be thrown!

    I received my Wedge War Club. 3 days ago. It is so tough. Took a few small branches off a recently downed tree, landed in rocks a few times on accident. with proper technique I can reach out to 75 yards, and already throwing with precision at 35 yards. no dents or scratched in mine at all. the products are the real deal, he is really chucking that thing at the rock!! customer service is best I have delt with in a very long time. Thank you for the fun I'm going to have in advance.

      Glad to hear you enjoyed it and that you own one of our finest products. While breakage is possible under the extreme stresses that throwsticks are sometimes subjected to, the material is incredibly tough. In any case impacts are best avoided. Be aware that a finished Central Desert Hunter has some finer edges that won't take impacts as well as some of the other models with thicker edges. It can dent deeply in some places in these finer areas. This is a refinement to the aerodynamics specific to this one super high performance model.

      Yeah it's interesting and very complex. The outer rim on the outside of the spin has the forward velocity plus the spin velocity as a part of its impact on target. So very high speed shock value plus a tangled mess of mass rotating through the target! We've made sticks that weigh over a pound and will fly 100 yards straight out! Really devastating, bone breaking blows they deliver.

      You know they are quite gentle to throw compared to a ball or a rock because they have all that leverage to them, but when I was first learning to tune I did pull my biceps near the joint and created a chronic problem there for a while which I had to resolve after some time. I was throwing maybe 7 hours a day all weekend long. Also winged my scapula at one point later through a serratus anterior palsy which I overcame as well. It imbalanced my shoulder for a while but that wasn't actually a throwing injury, it just affected it. I could still throw boomerangs horizontally but couldn't pitch a baseball for a darn! Thankfully I'm healty as can be now and throw a lot every week.

    Would it be possible for you to design a throwstick based off Krieg’s buzz axe from Borderlands 2?

    • @Throwsticks
      @Throwsticks  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      We can't legally copy designs from videogames and movies, but in theory, if we did, from a physics standpoint we would have to modify it to make it perform well. It isn't adequately curved and obviously steel is too heavy to fly at speeds the human arm can throw. If made from polycarbonate with the sharp breaks the design removed, the form simplified, bent more, and more weight and length distributed out across the curve, something like that would be possible but less ideal than the traditional forms. Drag is important to achieving long flight ranges, so aerodynamics favors simple designs.

    Do you have a version of throwing stick that is designed to be thrown upwards and diagonal? Not forward and horizontal. Because i throw sticks to walnut trees. when stick hits the walnuts they get down on the ground and i collect them.

    • @Throwsticks
      @Throwsticks  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Lift is produced by the wing at any angle. If thrown diagonal by a right handed thrower, a lift producing wing will curve slightly to the left as well as maintaining some lift against gravity. We can also make such a wing rotate from diagonal to horizontal in flight, but generally this would take 40 yards to do and wouldn't happen at the short distances you are speaking about. If you're just wanting symmetrical lift then any of our sticks fly well up hill when thrown horizontally. No wing will produce absolute vertical lift on a diagonal throw. At best we can only steer this direction.

      @@Throwsticks
      Well, the target (walnut trees) is 21 meters high and i am 7 meters or less away from the tree. i want a stick than can reach the top of the tree and hit the walnuts with minimum efforts with lowest chance of getting stuck on the tree, with maximum impact on the walnuts. I need stick that can get the job done. So i am looking at various designs all over internet. I am i right handed thrower and have mainly two styles of throwing. Overhand vertical and diagonal 45 degrees angle. My right hand goes at my left hip and throw using hip rotation and arm swing. So how your sticks will perform at 45 degrees throwing angle? 45 degrees trajectory i mean. I like that your sticks spin a lot.

    • @Throwsticks
      @Throwsticks  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@LORDVADER357 They fly up hill like this, just as well as flat and level. It's harder to throw at that angle because you're throwing in a way less natural for the human body and fighting gravity, but the wings will produce lift at any angle and go a long distance regardless. As far as a stick that doesn't get stuck, something not very bent and still heavy would be best, with no swell in the head. But there are always risks on any stick in a tree. Wind will eventually bring them down if nothing else does. I would probably recommend a Karli for your needs. You can find it here www.throwsticks.com/karli View the second video on this page for more info about how the sticks will behave when thrown at angles, and particularly soft tuned sticks. The up hill throwing is not a problem but you may curve the shots in if you throw at 2 o clock. When thrown on the vertical at 12 o'clock or 1 o'clock, the stick will pull towards the inside. A plain piece of wood is better for throwing at these angles since the lift will cause travel to the side. A hard tuned stick is designed to produce just enough lift to overcome gravity when thrown at full force. A soft tuned stick will do this on a much softer throw and will rise and climb on a hard throw. It is actually possible a soft tuned stick could allow you to throw hard up into trees while throwing lower than your target. This may increase the power of your throws. Overall I realize that you must account for specific branches and angles so the hard tuned may prove more versatile for you. It's difficult to say on that.
