    I adopted a cat in August. I'd heard that you don't choose the cat; it chooses you. This is so true! As soon as I picked her up she started purring and kneading me with her paws, then fell asleep in my arms. I found my perfect cat.

    I just adopted my first cat ever from the shelter she is a 5 year old blue. she is perfectly trained and ended up in the shelter because her previous owner died. it has been a wonderful experience.

    Yes, there is an adoption fee. The fee goes to support the shelter, for food, prescriptions, surgery b/c they are spayed/neutered when you adopt them, often times they are micro-chipped as well. They usually send you home with a certificate for a free complete exam by an independent Vet and probably a supply of the food they have been eating so you will have some to mix with whatever you plan on feeding them. The fee they charge is not making anyone rich, it is just maintaining the shelter.

    • @elizabethe9510
      @elizabethe9510 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The fees here are 300, I don't have that for a cat. They used to have a $20 fee.

    I brought her home and she hid alot from me for 4 months but I didn't give up on her then one day she finally came out of her hiding place crawled on my lap and she has been my best bud since

    We have 3 cats adopted from a shelter. It is a wonderful thing to rescue an animal who is waiting in the shelter sad in a cage ...and give them a good loving forever home. adopting an adult cat is very good advice. They are more mellow and will be less work especially for a first time adopter or someone who is at work all day. Plus it is always harder to get adults adopted since people are always looking for kittens. Cats are great companions.... ours are part of our family!

    I'm just 12, I live at Abu Dhabi. A year ago one cat a male Ginger Arabian Mau at the park caught my eye, and he just ran up to us, he was very friendly and would ask for food. We notice that he doesn't have cuts on he's ears just like the cats owned by the park, we suspect that he was abandoned there by he's original owner. The next day we found him waiting at the same bench. We fed him first and took him home with us and he's the best cat we had. Cooper is having a lot of fun playing with his friend Thinky who is a white Persian cat. Someday we will take them home in the Philippines and meet my other 4 cats there.

    I adopted my cat from the local humane society in January 2006, and she's still with me now. She was already grown up when I adopted her, and I think this made the transition easier on both of us. A kitten can be very stressful if you're not prepared for one, they're just as demanding as a human baby!

    Oh, don't necessarily pass up the kitties with more, shall we say, "challenging" personalities. I have 4 cats and while 2 of them are very placid and I think they would fit in fine anywhere, the other 2 consist of a very shy cat and a bitey little jerk. Their difficult personalities don't make them any less loving or playful but are the result of having a bad start -- my latter two kitties were found living as strays. It takes a bit more work (it was nearly a year before my very shy kitty felt secure enough to sleep ON the furniture, not under it) and certainly a lot of patience but it's almost more worthwhile when the formerly damaged ones return the love you give them.

    My cat was pretty shy in the shelter and anxious around so many other cats, but once I took her home and she settled in, her big beautiful personality came out. Sometimes they just need out of that environment!

    I just visited a shelter today with the intent of adopting a long haired cat with a one/two color coat and purebred (which there were some there), and came out with adoption papers to adopt a Domestic Short Hair (basically a mutt) with a Tortoiseshell coat who stole my heart. She picked me from the second I walked into the room, she reached out her paw through the cage and I walked over, it was love at first sight. They pick you more often than you pick them (workers told me that).

    This is a good video, but I think kittens do just fine in a home where people work, but I'd suggest getting two kittens and also taking a couple of weeks vacation to watch them initially, get them adjusted. One thing I also did this time is spend a little time with kittens, pick them up one by one and see if they are fearful. They were relaxed and and kept their claws retracted. I ended up with two sweethearts, crazy active but completely non-aggressive who never use claws on me. I personally think a cat bed a waste of money. I bought it for my previous cat, and she ignored it. Cats sleep where they choose, you cannot make them sleep where you want them. More often it's your bed or your sofa, but rarely what you buy for them. Oh, and from personal experience: examine your cats for no bald spots and keep new kittens quarantined in one room for a couple of weeks. I didn't, and they had ringworm, and it cost me $$$ not just in vet bills, but also in cleaning up my place. Cleaning only one room is a lot easier. Adult cats is safer in this respect, kittens are more likely to have it. I got kittens from the rescue, but cats from breeder can have the same problem. A vet tech in the clinic I take my cats too had the same problem but with a purebred ragdoll kitten.

    When I decided to go to the shelter to get my cat people tried to talk me out of it. I still went there and adopted a 4 year old black-and white cat. What can I say? She is the most amazing animal ever. She is so loving, she loves to follow me around the house and even comes to me when I call her name. Even now as I write she is sitting in my lap purring. =)
    Her previous owner gave her away after 4 years because they said she was unclean. Nonsense, she never ever did anything like that.

    She is 14 and 3 months now, and sick with IBD and heart issues.... She was shy initially, mostly in hiding. But gradually she became fine with my family, though still shy and hid under the bed whenever a door bell rings. Now she is less fearful. Not a lap cat, but at the same time the one who'd follow you around from room to room and lie near you. Very gentle - you really have to be asking for it for her to scratch you, and never bites. With strangers e.g. the vet, she'll just freeze.

    I have a shelter cat called Charlie, he was brought to the shelter because his previous owner was abusing him. When you went to sroke him, he got scared, thinking you were about to hit him. Fast foward 2 years later and hes running about, purring, catching mice, sleeping in his own bed, having belly rubs. He's the most happy cat and you get this feeling inside you when you see that you've changed this scared timid cat into a big fluffy happy one, you've saved his life almost and thats why I always go to a shelter, they have stories and it makes me even more attached

    Unfortunately that it so true. Personally my rescue was rescued from a puppy mill after being caged up for 10 YEARS!!! She was at the shelter for over 3 months b/c everyone cringed when they looked at her. I heard about her and marched myself over and adopted her. That was almost a year ago and it has taken the better part of the year for her to trust me and now she is my shadow!

    Maybe you can put something "crinkle-y" around it. Maybe something like Aluminum Foil. Some animals are scared of the shine and sound of the foil. Or if you have some shopping bags that are more firm and louder than regular ones. Maybe even some packing tape w/ the sticky side out. Just some suggestion.

    If you have a dog and want to get a cat at a shelter, should you take the dog in with you and see which cat will get along with the dog first before even deciding to get another cat? I have a dog who loves cats. He never barks at cats (only dogs). I had a cat since he was 3 1/2 months old and I broke the kitten in to be nice to my dog and they got along great. But on Sat. Jan. 18, 2014, my cat, 1 year and 11 months old never returned home after letting him out for the day. I always done that and he always came back, until that day. He's still missing. He was neutered close to 4 months old. If he doesn't come back some time this spring, I'm thinking of adopting a cat. But, I don't want to bring a cat home if it's going to be aggressive at my dog. I was thinking of taking my dog in to the shelter and see how the cats will react to my dog before deciding what cat breed I want. Have any advice for that? I'm not going to get another cat for a while because I'm giving my cat a chance to come back home before making the final decision in getting another cat. Plus, what breed is more accepting of dogs? I've been trying to find the info on TH-cam, but what I was trying to look for, there isn't any that applies to what I'm looking for.

    • @marciturner4980
      @marciturner4980 10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Devontrae Walls I completely conform that. My cat was let out this past Saturday January 18, 2014, but this time he didn't come back as he normally has. He was going to be 2 years old on February 15. He still hasn't come back since January 18. He has never done this before. He'd always come back that same night or the next day/night. When it starts raining and snowing, he wold instantly come back. But, he didn't come back when it started snowing that night (January 18). That's when I knew something was terribly wrong. My four theories are, he could of gotten run over or my neighbor killed him because they don't like cats and dogs, he could of hid in my shed as he always had until I called him to come back in the house (especially when raining/snowing) but could of hid and died under stuff in the smaller shed,he could of got picked up by someone to get him out of the cold, but that never happened in previous year when he was 1 year old. He never went that far when he left my property. I checked when it got warmer outside, months later by peaking in the shed, but I didn't see him. Recently, I asked my friend to take everything out of the shed so I can really check under his stuff and he had said yes. But, he couldn't do it that day and he hasn't come back yet. I haven't taken my cat off of pet insurance through the ASPCA just in case he does come back. But, now I'm starting to debate if I should or not. Have been thinking about it for a while, but not that much. During winter time I have went to my neighbors' housees and asked them if they saw him around, but they all said no. I went around the neighborhood too, calling out his name and purred after that as I always have, but he never came. A neighbor's cat recently came into my yard to find my cat a few weeks ago, twice looking for him. That's the only cat he liked. Otherwise he got aggressive at them when they were around the area and on my property. He only attacked one cat once, but the other cat had started it. And I know even though I didn't see it because my cat never started it when I seen him staring at another cat. he stayed in one spot when the cat was on my property and when the cat was across the street or a few blocks down the street. That's how I knew my cat didn't start the fight. I miss my cat so much, but I have moved on 3 months later. But, I still think about him and holler out his name one in a while on my own property. Not around the neighborhood. I don't holler out his name much anymore. Just once in a while out of the blue.

    6 month is a LONG time to be gone. You are being very smart to be thinking ahead. Please make sure that you will have arrangement for your pet, if you get one, for when you are going to be gone. You must also think of a back of plan should things fall through. Also, think of what will happen if medical care is needed while your are away. Don't mean to be a downer, just trying to cover all the bases.

However as soon as I saw her, I knew she was the one...and after only an hour of being here she layed on me, purring and kneading. She is honestly one of the nicest cats I've ever been around, she didn't even hiss at any of the other cats. Defiantly adopt from a shelter/humane society...they all deserve loving homes.

    I got two cats from a local shelter. Personally I'm not a people person so an animal works amazing to keep me company while feeling like what I do have a meaning. So now I have a cuddly cat and a little more reserved cat. But just knowing they are there makes me calm.

    We would recommend starting at a shelter is you do not have any other options. Shelters are full of loving animals of all ages. They all need a loving "forever family" to belong to. Hopefully you can open your heart and home to one. Usually shelters will have their shots already done. Also they are usually already spayed/neutered or will offer a certificate to have it done when they are old enough. Sometime they are micro-chipped as well.

    I just adopted a 5 year old calico and I’m getting her in a few days, I’m a bit scared about introducing her to my 5 year old dog, not because of the dog, she’s great and she has lived with a cat before but the cat used to live in the streets and even though she was the sweetest at the shelter she may not be ok with my dog. We will have to see how it goes, I’m excited about helping this beautiful cat, people go to the shelter only looking for kittens and they are missing out on giving this amazing animals a new life.

    15 days later my cat died. It's been one of the hardest situations we've had to handle emotionaly and we had to see our poor little cat suffer for a whole week. Please if you are adopting any cat, make them the proper health tests for this type of virus, because your pet ad you also can suffer you don't know how much. Thank you for listening my story and I hope it can be really useful for all of you. And I also want to thank Houdini.com for making this videos, this animals need A LOT of love

    I did much of the things "wrong" according to this video when I adopted my cat -- adopted a kitten while working full time (my retired parents visited during the day though), being a first time owner, adopted a shy kitty that hid under the bed the moment I brought her. It worked out great. She was a couple of weeks to a month older than their other kittens, likely left behind because she was too shy, jumped away the moment I picked her, went straight under the bed the moment I brought her home.

    I know this is a very old video but I am just so excited to be getting a cat for Christmas.
    Just to clear things up it will not be an impulse buy/adoption, I have been researching for months even while I had my previous pet but after he passed I started researching even more extensively to pass the time and fill the void. That's why I am here trying to make sure I know everything ( I am 13 but I consider myself mature for my age and know that cats need their space and I won't be poking and prodding the cat just for my own amusement) Anyway just wanted to share this, I have my eye on a 12-year-old cat already and if he's still there in 7 months (which I doubt he's too gorgeous) he's mine!!!!! I'll update you in 7 months i guess :)

All they need is love i did that and my cat is happier then ever. Sometimes she even follows me at home :)

    Walked into petco for cat food, walked out with a cat. Didn’t need any proof of anything. Just a drivers license and cash. Paid $80 to adopt. First cat cost me about $600 after initial cost and vet visits. Definitely adopt if you have the option

    i’m hopefully moving this summer to a house that allows pets, and i’m really hoping we can get a cat. my last cat was one that lived in the wild (where i lived in maui, there’s a lot of wild cats) and just sort of. started living with us. we had to leave her behind when we moved since the climate is really different, but i miss her so so much.

  • @jewelmarkess

    1. Play with him - A LOT, make him really tired so that he is panting, then give a little rest and play again. Do it several times a day. 2. Get a nice big scratching post. 3. Don't ever play with your hands only toys. 4. If he is biting, don't do what he wants e.g. he bites you because he wants to play - ignore him instead. If it's because he doesn't like petting, watch signs during pettings e.g. stopped purring, tail swishing, ears down and stop. I am sure you can find a lot of info on the web

    My cat was a runt taken in by college kids...we got her at 4-6 months obstensibly for a few weeks, but then the 'owner' never came for her. She's a 'one person' cat; listens to my commands and sleeps in my armpit every night lol. She's very affectionate with strangers esp. kids walking to school - calm, loving indoor/outdoor. Now she's 9 and I want to adopt a kitten for her to have some company but don't know how my first will react! She's always been an only cat. She may get insecure no?

  • @howdini
    @howdini  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    Not every shelter with require this. But...why do you not have a home that is permitted to have pets? You only what what is BEST for your pet and bringing him/her into a loving home where he/she is wanted by all member of your family is what is BEST for the kitten.

  • @howdini
    @howdini  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    Since there is about a 6wks transition period, you should separate your new kitty away from the other animals. Introduce them slowly and only when you can supervise them. Both your cats will be hissing and defensive at first but they will get used to each other.

  • @howdini
    @howdini  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    She may act like she "hates it" at first. The transition can take 6-8 wks. Be patient and don't leave them alone together unsupervised until then. They will eventually learn to at least "get along."

    1)Do cats get along with Chihuahuas dogs ?
    2) is it hard to take care of a cat during the time such as food,water, & continuing down the list of there own life style ?
    3) is there information about cats & the differences about them?

    Hi, my name is Mariana I'm from Colombia, last month my husband and I adopted the cuttest kitten I had ever seen, unfortunately here in my country is not obligatory for veterinarians doing adoptions to make the viral infection tests on cats, no one even told us that such illness existed on this animals and without knowing our little kitten had PIF a mortal infection for this type of animals without any cure,

    Yes most shelters offer the same in Portugal, but we don't have to pay any fee. I understand the need for the fee but still i think it is an obstacle for people to adopt. Asking for more than kindness for adopting a sheltered animal is so counterproductive. Maybe i think that, since i'm from a different country and as such used with different views. I find the measure odd, but if it works for the animals in USA then nothing against it.

    You never know for sure. Has your resident cat ever been around other cats? The key is usually the introduction process. Don't force them together right away. Give the new cat his own space until he's ready to tour the whole house and plan to chaperone the two cats when they first meet. Cats can take weeks or months to adjust to a new home and a resident cat. Get them used to each others' smells. Kittens are often easiest because the resident cat is less threatened.
