Adopting a Pet | My Checklist and Preparation Guide

- Some advice on what to do before you bring home a new pet, based on my own personal experience (and a fair bit of research!) 🐱🐶
MORE TIPS:
- If you're not sure what kind of animal to adopt, do some research about the care, cost, and lifestyle of the pets you're considering. Also don't be afraid to ask someone experienced for their opinion on what pet might suit your lifestyle best. It's very important to think this through fully before committing to pet parenthood!
- Budgeting is another great thing to work out far in advance. Figure out how much you’re going to pay in adoption fees, annual vet bills, and things like vaccines, spaying/neutering, and (of course) all the supplies and regular food purchases.
- Consider a plan (and a few backup plans) for when you travel. Friends who are willing and able to pet-sit, pet hotels that are nearby and well-rated, etc. No matter how much or little you travel, you should always have options - because odds are you will need them sometime!

Excellent advise all around. Warms my heart that you take having a pet seriously.
One thing I can think of to add is familiarizing yourself with their body language. Although not all cats give clear warning signals. Mine certainly took me by surprise occasionally.
Cats are very big on boundaries When a cat scratches you or lashes out at you, you crossed the line. It's not agression. You did something the cat doesn't like or is in the mood for.
When that happens, don't make a big deal out of it, or worse punish your cat. Just stop what you were doing and/or walk away. It makes your cat feel safe that it got its point across and therefore at ease and happy.
Each cat is different so it will vary a lot what their boundaries are.

I adopted a black cat. His name is Tchalla. He doesn't like to be held like this but he's very sweet 😊😊

I'm planning on getting a cat soon, me and my mom agreed on the name 'Jupiter' since it just rolls off the tongue. I'm going to try to get a black cat or a disabled cat since they tend to be the most unloved. I want to give my little baby the best life I can give them

We might be rescuing/adopting a black cat with no name and me and my little brother spent ages writing names down and what equipment we will need and I’ve been explaining to him to not be too loud or in the cats face so he/she can settle in nicely, I’ve also been making diagrams In my notebook about where I will put the litter tray, scratching poles, food and water bowls, bed, toys all that kind of stuff. I’ve spoken to my parents and I’ve said the cat will completely be my responsibility, I will pay for the food and all the equipment and things he needs, I’ve had 2 cats before but sadly they died of old age so I’m very excited about the fact that I’m maybe getting a cat! I just got my adoption application approved and met a potential kitty, literally could not be more excited! I've got her litter and food dish and everything already set up for when she comes home in a few days 😻😻😻
it is a good thing you set everything up before hand. alot of people don't set up for not only cats, but other new pets too. that was the first thing that came up when i researched every site and video about getting a cat so i am glad you researched too!
Thanks for this! Especially the cat proofing part, I thought as long as the kitten has everything he/she needs, they won't be interested in other places but I'm massively rethinking that.
Hamlet is adorable! A lot of the things you mentioned were familiar from my experience. 🐶🐾 I adopted my dog through a shelter, which required an application (they even contacted my personal references) and tried to ensure that Ben and I were a good match. After meeting Ben, his foster mom took us through the pet supply store to make sure we had everything we needed. She then followed us home to make sure we got settled and to train me about Ben’s personality. It was a thorough and positive experience!
Wow, what an amazing shelter and foster mom! Making sure it's a good fit is in the best interest of both the pet and the future pet parent, so it's great that they invested so much in it. And I'm glad you and Ben made a good match 😃🐶

I adopted a cat today from Pet Smart. She is adorable. She is fully trained and up to date with vaccinations, neutered etc. Clean bill of health. Thank you on the tips with regards to their habits. Pet Smart pets are very well taken care off.
I’m gonna ask mine can we get it tomorrow she already agreed to get one soon just not the day I made a list and calculated the price and it’s cheap so fingers crossed

I'm preparing for adopting my first kitty (outside of my childhood home) and I've been doing research and prepping like crazy over the last few weeks. Nearly everything that you listed has been done on my part, so this is bringing me some peace of mind that I'm doing everything right. I feel almost obsessive over making sure he'll settle in okay once I pick him up from the shelter. Of course, there's always room for improvement, but I'm a bit more at ease now. Thank you for sharing this!
Something you will find useful for a cat: a water spray bottle with a little vinegar in it. When the cat goes someplace, or does something, it shouldn't, give a quick spray and firmly say "No!'. Cats don't like being wet, so they will immediately start cleaning their fur. The vinegar will be a harmless but unpleasant taste. They will come to associate it all together as a "bad thing". Eventually, when they hear 'No!' all by itself, they will stop doing what they were / being where they were. Optimally, they will go further and avoid the situation all together. Side note: vinegar, in general, is a good deterrent ... cats will avoid being wherever it is. So you can spray a little on couches, etc to help keep them away from unapproved scratching posts, etc.

Why would you spray your cat? The cat will associate the bad thing with you, not the thing they just did.

It’s called cover up the places you don’t want it to go and get a lot of scratching posts beside the furniture so it has a different choice! Spraying them will just make them more scared of you and what if the vinegar gets in their eyes! It isn’t fair for the cat for YOUR actions and your just making your cat more scared of you so whoever is reading this, DONT EVER SPRAY YOUR CATS ! Dogs are a different story but cats hate it and they will want to attack you even more.

Sounds like your checklist to get a pet was longer than my list to give up life in Germany and come to Paris :D But I keep wondering about your background, those cups look fragile. And I have seen him walk around the shelves in your videos.
I'll admit, a couple of them have taken a tumble and somehow miraculously survived 😅 I scooted them further back in the shelf at first because he used to jump up there all the time and scare me, but he's actually become much better about that now. So it hasn't been an issue for a while, thankfully 😁

He was more content than most cats I have seen on fellow youtuber channels. Eventhough I am not a pet person i have definitely seen that with cats males are much more affectionate than females. Every Male cat I ever encountered just wanted to be my friend.
I didn't really have a preference between adopting male or female because I've had wonderful experiences in the past with both, but we definitely got lucky with Hamlet... He's so cuddly and sweet! 😻
The Lawn Gnome i actually adopted a female kitty and she is so cuddly, loving, and very clingy!! she follows me around everywhere and loves being held, she just melts in my arms! i think it depends on the animals personality, or maybe i just got lucky with my girl 😊

I’m planning on adopting a black cat pretty soon, and I’m hoping to get a cat that is cuddly, but won’t feel sad when I leave him alone (aka independent). It’s a hard balance because my brother’s family adopted a cat and he’ll come chill with you once in a while but her mostly likes to do his own thing. They like this though because they are pretty busy with kids.

I currently don't have a cat, but I used to, but she's alive. It's just that I moved several years ago when my mom remarried, and my cat and her brother (both littermates we rescued from under the shed) live with my big brother in his place. Haven't seen her in a long time, but my bro keeps me up to date. But I can tell my cat sees him as her person, not me. And that's okay, because my older brother takes insanely good care of the cats. Unfortunately, my mom and my stepdad and other older stepbrother are deathly allergic to cats, and my mom and stepdad hate cats. My older stepsister is an all-round animal lover, and she has a cat, of whom I met. He's a big black cat, and he's lovely. Hopefully when I move out, I can get an apartment that allows cats so I can adopt one.

Cats can get out of small spaces by themselves.
1hr under a cabinet isn't very long for a cat.
He probably just wanted some alone time from you(seeing as you'd just got him).
It's the same as people thinking cat's get "stuck" in trees. They aren't stuck 😂 they want alone time and they think "I'm high enough, surely the human which can't climb well, won't bug me waaay up here" ... and then you go ahead and bug them by trying to "rescue" them from their hidey spot 🤦 like bro, he's trying to get some personal space and you're just escalating how hard he needs to try.
The only things you actually need to cat proof in a home in stuff they'll chew on: -plants (many of which are poisonous to pets)
-power cords
-rubbish bins, so if you throw out something poisonous to them eg empty chemical containers, the cat won't be tempted to eat contaminated or poisonous food.
and stuff they'll knock over (not for the cat's safety, it's to protect your irreplaceable items):
-keep delicates in a room the cat isn't allowed in
-keep delicates away from edges and never on shallow shelves
-remember cats intentionally knock things over cause it's fun, you need to think "could they wack this over the edge?" rather than "will this fall over if they bump it?"
we did a rescue and the rescue had a welcome packet with a water bowl food bowl food wet food dry food litterbox so it was pretty cool and they gave us a box to transport her

I can relate that my cats are like my children. My cats arent allowed to go into the kitchen since is not cat proofed. So we normally have the door shut. My cats KNOW they cant go there because i give them the look and they seem to understand because they sit outside even with the door open. The thing is when im not watching them for 3 seconds my little boy goes inside like a ray while the girl goes more slowly like she knows is not a good thing. It's funny because he really acts like a little boy and i have to nag him everytime he does that.
