Brother, as I told you, I have always considered Kanadehon Chūshingura one of my favorite Kabuki plays and I always review it once in a while when I have time. However, I have a doubt: there are three Kabuki actors that I always wanted to see playing Ōboshi Yuranosuke, which are Kataoka Ainosuke VI, Nakamura Shikan VIII and Onoe Shoroku IV. Do you know which of them is closest to playing Yuranosuke in the near future?
That's a good question, there will be a tōshi kyōgen later next year at the Kabuki-za, and I am hoping to make a video about the likely candidates to play each role before they are announced. Of those three, I think that Shikan VIII is the most likely to play it at the present moment, but Ainosuke VI is even more likely to be one of the main Yuranosuke actors in the future. Not sure about Shōroku IV, but I would definitely love seeing him play it. It was a great role of his grandfather, after all!
I am super stoked to see the Mizoguchi film. For some reason I was unaware. I came to "Japanophillia" through film so I'm always pleased to swing it back around.
I kind of wish you could make the images with English subtitles last a bit longer, as I am reading the words, then it goes to the next scene! Great Kabuki story! Domo arigato
I was surprised to be walking in Tokyo and see the old national theatre building abandoned without any signs of work being done on demolition. It's somehow sadder to think the building is sitting empty when I could be put to use than if it had already been demolished.
Thank you for this
Thank you not only for the great video, but the link to the book as well! It's going on my wish list for sure!
