    This is a skill that is no longer found in our society in large volumes. I also,have not seen a huge number of universities teaching electrical engineering.
    But if you can apprentice with this guy, after a year or 2 you'd be as sharp as a razor.

      The switch chassis is weak and partly relies on the screen for rigidity. Add to that the legs on the bottom corners but no support leg in the center is just a bad design that easily allows the unit to be bent and receive damaged.

    I do enjoy watching you solder :) I recently had a bit of a bargain, I found a spares or repair auction on ebay for a Switch winning it with a £17 bid, got it here and it worked straight out the box, abs pleased as punch with the device but am very cautious as they seem to be made out of glass and very fragile to my thinking.

    I absolutely love your videos and have learned so much by watching your work. What I don’t understand is so often people send you items they had repaired at another shop. How are these shops in business? Do they not test the device before returning it to the customer? I know you can only speculate but it makes me wonder if a lot of these placed just don’t care about customer service like you clearly have demonstrated you do. Keep up the great work!

    • @mensaswede4028
      @mensaswede4028 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Usually the shop returns it to the customer and tells them that it’s a no-fix, and charges the customer the standard repair-attempt fee. Most shops aren’t particularly skilled, and so they are just going for the low-hanging fruit and fixing the easy ones. Anything not straightforward is a no-fix, and the customer still has to pay the repair attempt fee, so they can stay in business just fine.

    • @84201004
      @84201004 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@mensaswede4028 I’m totally aware and don’t disagree. All I can say is that if one of my devices would up on his channel after another shop butchered it like that, it’s not a no-fix….it’s a shop trying to go outside of their expertise and doing more damage which costs the customer even more money to send it to competent technicians. But if there’s proof of the damage, horrible attempt that proves they don’t know what they’re doing, or damage clearly not caused by the customer or their issue….I’d be doing what I could for a refund from that shop and also make it know to others so they don’t fall victim to the same irresponsible repair attempts.

    Great job! Admittedly the charge port repair that was done prior to you having the switch definitely needing doing as the pins didn’t look straight and may not have been connected on the inner rail. I just wondered why you didn’t try looking for power on the 9v fuse, and shorts on the board before you did the port? Always trying to learn and progress my own repairs, so would be great to know! I need one of those board jigs too!!

    • @TheRedRave
      @TheRedRave 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      The issue was "not charging" but as the previous repair shop supposedly had worked on the charged port the first thing to check is the previous attempt, to see if they really did a good job, before anything else. Assuming they did could have you work on any other component where the true issue would have been a non soldered pin. Not all repair shop do good work so you got to be a bit wary of rushed repairs.

    • @danex070
      @danex070 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      My guess its one thing to have the basic voltage and an other if the charging communication is working. and since the "usb tester" did not showed any power draw the problem could be under the connector.

    • @noahscott7272
      @noahscott7272 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@TheRedRave not all shops have the experience he does. A lot of these guys are much younger and have only been doing it half as long. You can’t really confuse inexperience with bad work, although the outcome is the same. How do you think Alex learned. I assure you, he personally ruined many devices in his early days. Any tech who says other wise is lying. Mistakes are the best experience.

    • @NorthridgeFix
      @NorthridgeFix  2 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      I answered this before. I haven't tried it, but based on first impression, I hate the blinding red light it emits. I don't know if you can hold it or have control on how far or close you can be from the board. or if you can narrow down the heat spot rather then burn half the board to de-solder one component. With hot air you can increase air speed and reflow a BGA chip using air pressure and see the chip move, with laser that's not possible. Again i haven't tried the machine, but that's what I concluded based on few videos I watched.

    I'm trying to get the BQ chip off my son's oled board but I can not get the solder to flow. I don't know what I'm doing. I've tried 3 different types of flux and I just can't get it to go. I tried to use some new solder to get the old stuff to flow but I'm pretty sure I just made some bridges on the resistors on one of the sides. I'm going to have to go in with a wick once I get it off.
