My 2023 Defender D250 got the yellow emissions problem light came on - was told there’s a software update coming car’s fine. Car has now been in the workshop 3 weeks waiting for a new DPF as it wasn’t the software update that it needed it has a “cracked” DPF according to the dealership. First Land Rover I’ve owned since 2001 that has had any mechanical problem - my last 2020 Defender had 15 visits to the dealer in 3 years to fix rattles and leaks but nothing mechanical failed. The last LR to break down in my hands was a TD5 Disco2 that snapped a drive belt at 2 years old due to a seized pulley way back in 2001.
Jim, I finally got the Countryman S E Sport L3 handed over last Tuesday (already racked up 300 miles in it!) - you were right about it’s drive and performance, it’s a delight and way more civilized than the hatch way but not quite as much fun as the hatch!

I disagree with your view regarding faults on the infotainment systems. These parts of cars are often a major factor in the choice of trim levels, and sometimes the model too. If they go wrong it can be a real pain and turn you off the brand altogether.

I'm in the US at the moment and it's very noticeable that the majority of cars on the road are Japanese and Korean. Americans tend to keep their cars longer so long term reliability is important to them. After all who wants to spend all their time going back to the dealership with issues.

I was expecting a JLR products to be in the most unreliable. It would be interesting to see a BEV reliability list... As in the past the breakdowns I have experienced have all been petrol. Never had a BEV breakdown yet. 🤞🤞🤞
Yes, I had a chat with someone about this recently and 12v battery failure seems to be the only real common Achilles heel.
I saw a BEV reliability study recently, not surprisingly the Jaguar Ipace was the worst, but overall the reliability was very good and models like the Mustang MachE had a near perfect score. I've only had one issue in 4 years with my Renault Zoe GTline, heat pump self-destructed and that was replaced under warranty.
@@leegoodman297 That is logical... the iPace is a dreadful car.
@@mikadavies660 A friend of mine had one and it was constantly back at the dealership with issues such as the charging flap not opening and more worryingly activating automatic emergency braking for no reason. He nearly got wiped out by a truck who was following him.
@@leegoodman297 Your friend "had one" .... surely that vehicle had a brand name. And sharing the brand and issues is generally helpful.
As it teaches others what to look out for.

Shout out for the Outlander phev, but in fairness mine did a timing chain at 162k miles. Low mile replacement engine now in.
The rest of it, inc battery and motors? Perfect.
Anyway, if you have one with 100k miles or more, get your timing chain checked, it could save your engine.

Interesting thanks, may consider an Alfa at last. I’d like to see crash test surveys for cars had a look and although you get the ncap ratings I’d like to know what cars you are more likely to survive a real car crash. People think large suvs are but they are more prone to rolling over and their weight means stopping distances arnt the best. Or are they?
Yes, NCAP is as clear as mud these days. Crash testing should be our primary concern.
Looking for a used petrol suv do you have any recommendations? Ive been looking at the bmw x1 18i 2018 but kinda feel that would be a bad choice 😅
It would. Honda, Toyota, Lexus, Suzuki are all good brands to look at.
I've had two X1's. One a 2018, 2.0s. It was so good I bought the facelift, same model. Never had any issues.
Our petrol XC40 has been good so far... touches wood
I'm a sucker for aesthetics 😅 and the X1 and XC40 are the only ones that stand out for me. I don't want audi as I've owned an A3 for 5 years and want to try something different.

Infotainment system now days control most things like air con and side mirrors so if it breaks you can’t even get your side mirrors to open or heat your front windscreen so it’s kinda is a breakdown because you can’t use or drive your car in a safe manner

Hello Jim, great vid. The only way to make SUV's more relaible is to boycott sales, it'll probably result in a two-tier system (the least & most relaible SUV's) but if that doesn't compell manufacturers to act? After all, you couldn't charge strong money for a tier 2 SUV? 🤔

while yes a sat-nag or infotainment not working would be classed reliability. it doesn't stop the car from it's main function of getting the person from point A-B safely, and reliably. and think it is thst, that I would class as reliability.
as a car parked up with a flat battery, or a car that won't start on a winter morning in -5c is more a reliabilty issue thsn a car radio not working, as there are work arounds for that type of problem,
whereas starting a car or getting to your destination is far more important. and that is from a mechanics point of view,
yes I love the gadgets, but they aren't 100% used all of the time, like you will find I have the radio switched off more than switched on while driving my car, the window either up or down never twiddling it to the point of destruction, and if electric seat it is only setup to how I prefere to drive, yes maybe a little adjustment here or there day to day, but not in total constant use. like my last car had heated seats, and think I used the function 2 or 3 times a year on average.

Anybody recommend a good family SUV for under 6k? Just got city driving. Our 54 plate HONDA CRV has too much rust to pass an MOT.

I'm a new rav 4 owner, chosen specifically for it's reliability, great car and amazingly frugal.... But....I wouldn't class it as a 'large SUV'

My 2016 ford kuga diesel has just gone through 145k miles. Most reliable car I have ever owned.

If you can still drive the car safely and within the law then it’s an inconvenience really, but I’d understand why new owners would be unhappy with it.
👍👍 me too, I just consider a bodywork issue to be a “breakdown”
Reliability is about everything NOT just mechanical.
The ONLY thing a car should have visit a dealer with is it's routine servicing... that's why Toyota and Lexus are able to give a 10 year warranty with their cars.
A fault with a cars bodywork or electrical system is just as bad as a mechanical fault.
In one respect but it's not a breakdown is it. If you notice a piece of trim is a bit loose it's not the same as the car refusing to start. It's an inconvenience rather than a problem which is why it's odd that these things are refered to as breakdowns.
Batteries are now crap quality my 2007 has have 1 replacement in 17 years about 9 years ago with a 12 months guarantee

My 2002 A3 Tdi battery lasted 14 years. My 2018 Q3 Tdi battery (stop/start) lasted 6. The factory fitted items are not robust enough for the loads more technology places on them.
My 2012 Audi A4 TDI stop start battery has never been changed and is still absolutely fine. We changed my wife's car battery (also with stop start) after 12 years. Shame battery reliability now seems to be going backwards.
