Your videos are so AWESOME! The real NZ, not just the tourist traps. Looking forward so much to the West Coast, Buller and Nelson! Enjoy our country, friends! :-)
These Irish people are everywhere! 🤣. Our great grandfather William McBirney arrived to the Cook Islands in 1908 with wife and children, one of which was our grandmother! His family came from the County Armagh but our great grandmother was English. Anyway, the beautiful people with amazing hospitality in the South Islands make’s me proud to be a Kiwi! And to the lovely lady that gave you the free venison and salad, I take my hat off to her! What an amazing lady! I love watching your videos, you are a lovely couple.
Great to stumble across your St Bathans video. I live 20 minutes away, and that's my favourite swimming area. As you have seen, it's an area that survives on farming and the mining history as the main tourist attractions. There is a bike trail that was originally for trains, dismantled a few decades ago. Thousands of visitors to Central otago every year have cycled the 151 kms between Clyde and Middlemarch, usually a 4 day event, and now it's popular for e - bikes and the not so fit tourists joining in. Thanks Glen and Mado. Hopefully you will encounter many more kind hearted people (like Alana) on your NZ travels. ps love your cosy car set up.
Another gem of an episode! It does my heart good to see such generous and kind fellow Kiwis sharing their food and stories, makes for good entertainment!
Awesome episode again. Omakau is one of my favourite summer spots. Glad you're doing all the small interesting places. You really need another 6 months down here in the South Island 😂😂
Lovely place, St Bathans. My father was born a few miles away from there, nearer to Omakau. Spent quite a lot of time in the area when I was a kid! Glad you enjoyed yourselves there. Great video, guys.
St Bathans was where my German forefathers arrived in the 1850s. They ran a bakery during the gold rush days. So the Irish didn’t have it all to themselves. They ate German bread 🥰
I love that you showed our bike fence. We started it in 2001 to show our guests how to find our place, and it just grew. It started with a couple of old bikes that used to be my kids bikes that they grew out of. Then my brother in law dropped off a couple that he had and it just grew from there.
hahah that fence was awesome, I'm so grateful that this video made it to the person that made it! wow thats so cool 😂 you guys now how to make the coolest creations. wouldn't see stuff like this anywhere in the world 😂
Great video. That's around where I grew up. I suggest having a good look around Alexandria if you get a chance as well. Like alot of central Otago there's a large amount of history. The rock formations around central Otago, north Otago, McKenzie country and south Canterbury are pretty amazing and very different
There's a town there called oturehua and on average its the coldest town in New Zealand during the cold months. In winter it has a average daily low temperature of like -4 or -5 and can easily get below -10
My ancestors, “Drakes” moved to Omakau in 1800s. All in the local cemetery now. My grandmother is born and lived there before heading north. I’d love to visit one day.
I'm currently in Zürich Switzerland, one of the most expensive places in the world. I bought garlic at the more expensive supermarket yesterday, It was still under NZD $1! I cant get over how expensive so many basic everyday items have become in new Zealand.
I'm from little old Upper Hutt and went to St Bathans two years ago, walked into the vulcan and you could literally feel the history within. Greeted by a cute little pub puppy and realised the owner was the bar maid, the cook, the hotel hostess and was so incredibly interesting to learn the history of St Bathans and old mate Rosie. Tried to convince my partner to stay (I love ghostly things) and he was too scared 😅 such a beautiful lake too. Alana is the epitome of a real Kiwi, selfless, no shits given but accepts anyone with wide open arms and that special Kiwi Charisma ❤ loved this episode. Rest in love Rosie - may you haunt all those whom don't believe 😂
I feel ya, Shelley; it has such an exciting vibe when entering the beautiful little town of Saint Bathans. People were so open and welcoming, and it's so an honour to experience such amazing people like this. we absolutely love the history too as there was so many Irish as I mentioned 😉😂
Hi guys. I have recently spent about 3 months travelling around the south island, going to the places you have but not all of them. Would love to see a map on where you go each day. Also are you coming to Nelson/ Tasman. You will miss a lot if you don't. Mado there is a lovely old German settlement in Upper Moutere that has the oldest Hotel in the country. You can see some of my family history on the walls. We also have Able Tasman, great walks beaches etc etc
Hey hope your well 👋 we are actually in Nelson right now which is our second time here. We have walked the 24km return walk on the tasman region which was awesome 🙌 will try to check out this German settlement!
Very nice watching this series on N. Zealand. I didn’t know much about N. Zealand, beautiful country. I’m also interested in the vehicle you traveled, rented?, how you set it up, sleeping? and where you wash and use the bathroom. I’m guessing at camp sites as they have here in the U.S.
Hey Rob! its such an incredible place to travel especially if you do it the way we do. we bought this car at the start of our journey, we bought it the way it is. we basically just push the seats forward and put the stuff on the seats while we sleep on our comfy bed. we would basically use all the gyms as we have a membership or sometimes just jump in a lake or so. we never use campsites and mostly use the free self contained spots with toilets. we probably have paid for 1 camp site since we began.
@@GlenAndMado thank you for the detailed reply. You guys can adapt to doing what you do. I did get to the video when purchasing the vehicle in the playlist. Have safe travels!

$8 isn't that cheap for eggs direct from the producer. between $5 and $7 would be what I would expect them to be. $8 is nearly supermarket prices, but still cheaper.
I mean your totally right, but its the quality of the eggs too that your looking for 😉 and we have travelled the whole country and never seen eggs cheaper then 8dollars for the normal size ones. there much better then then supermarket though. you can buy barn eggs or organic and pay the difference.

Central Otago from Cromwell to Middlemarch can get dry very quickly if that get a few days of a North Westley wind in Spring to Summer.
