Your channel is great and I appreciate your heartfelt speech at the beginning. I use your videos to find games to play as a retro gamer and your perspective on games is always helpful.
The N64 in '98 was awesome too. Banjo-Kazooie and Ocarina of Time, in the same year? Plus everything else. The next year the Dreamcast dropped and the tech started getting dated. I feel that was the last year Nintendo was really going toe to toe with Sony at the top of the industry.
in 1998 for "Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time" on the N64 you could put in your own name & i would change Link to Kenny! When he died i would yell out: "They killed Kenny, You Bastards!" Ha-Ha!
Body Harvest was one of my favorite N4 games. The studio that made it would go on to be a driving force with Rockstar making GTA and you can see the genes of GTA in the controls of this game. The maps and exploring easter eggs was unlike anything else in 1998
This is going to sound weird but robotron 64 is my favorite n64 game. I'm an old arcade fan and robotron 64 is a perfect example of how to update a classic game to a then modern console while maintaining the original gameplay
Thank you for your nice comments about twisted edge extreme snowboarding. As a game tester on that title, I knew it wasn’t as good as 1080. But I tested cartridge games for the Nintendo 64 and that’s awesome! -Rick Waibel
I actually like Quest 64; playing the Game Boy Color version made me realize how unfinished it is, but having to balance elemental weaknesses against, "Where does this spell it?" was a unique idea, and I love how it just goes OFF THE *RAILS* at the end. I'm a big fan of the Turoks, too, though I like 2 better, because I'm all about crazy weapons; it was my all-time favorite Shooter until I discovered Borderlands, which takes the Ikea approach to your arsenal. As for Mystical Ninja, that might be my favorite game on the N64; I felt like it did what Zelda did much better almost an entire year before Ocarina of Time came out, AND it had giant mech battles! Then again, I never liked Ocarina of Time, even when it was new, so take that for what it's worth. I can't help you with what Mystical Ninja is missing, but I can help with the Culture Brain franchise you're thinking about: it's Hiryu no Ken, which my limited knowledge of Japanese tells me that's probably why most of them were localized to have flying and/or dragon in the title.
I skipped the N64. Waited till the PS2 came out and got that instead. So I missed all these games Jon mentions here. The PS2 was well worth the wait though 😊
Seeing the Ken Griffey Jr. Baseball really hit me. I loved that game so much when i was a kid. I haven't played it since 99-2000 or seen any gameplay footage since then. Just seeing it here made me feel so nostalgic and a little sad. I used to play with my younger brother, who just passed away back in July.
Ha Forsaken 64. Someone I forgot about that game but then when you mentioned it the first thing that popped in my head was me and my bestie going the future is for Sega. To us it always sounded like that's what they were saying in the commercial.
The x games were getting pretty big in '98, I believe this is why snowboarding games were so popular. As a poor white boy in Alabama, those were the only slopes I could ski, so 1080 was pretty fun imo. Really miss those old combat racing games like twisted metal, vigilante 8, etc. Of all the racing games, waverace was my goto, though. Also, glover really makes me think hamburger helper created that game but didn't want to be tied to it. Subtle marketing strategy imo.
I used to play Doom I & II, Heretic, Hexen and Duke Nukem 3D before 1998, so my fav. N64 game was Quake 64. I remember playing multi-player with Quake 64 with friends from 1998 and onwards.
imo Banjo-Kazooie was a wonderful game for the N64!! Mission Impossible I sorta feel people expected to be like Goldeneye? I remember it being delayed and then finally playing it and for what they were going for I actually enjoyed it. I unironically loved WWF Warzone. Yes compared to the THQ games it doesn't compared but having played it first I enjoyed it, especially being able to make your own character and assign whoever moveset. For being an NFL game, Blitz was stupid fun. Body Harvest I missed out on but heard great things about it after the fact. F-Zero X is one of the best racing games for the system. WCW/NWO Revenge is just such a fun time game if you love wrestling and had the NWO Black/White and NWO Red and other characters. Even had a slot for the luchadore wrestlers. Ocarina of Time - timeless classic and Rouge Squadron was everything I wanted Star Wars 64 to be and then some. Ending with Turok 2 with the specific AI to enemies and the huge levels. 1998 was a hell of a year for the system.
John Riggs, great video on the N64. If you get the time can you do a review on Command and Conquer Red Alert Retaliation on PS1 it's an amazing game and I still play it to this day.
There's a rumor it was the Hardys that did mocap for Warzone. I'm pretty sure I remember them being brought in for Attitude, but I can't find anything concrete on Warzone.
Space station silicon valley wasnt for everyone, but i remember it as a very fun and unique platformer/adventure style game. Each stage had new or different challenges and made me want to explore all of the biomes. Scientists created animal robots on the space station, and they kind of overthrew them and killed all the scientists. You could collect their heads as secrets in the levels. You play as a robot who has been destroyed during a crash landing on the station, the microchip you controlled was vulnerable on its own, but could hop in and control deactivated animal robots. You use the animal abilities to navigate the stages. As you played through the biomes you would find your robot parts. Very unique and silly.
I was on the PS1 by this point but played the 64 at a friend's mainly for the typical zelda, mario, donkey kong etc even pokemon stadium that was cool. I wasn't really into racers back then I only played Rollcage on PS1 that was an interesting concept driving on the walls and ceiling.
I got Sculptor's Cut at Blockbuster for $15. It sat on my shelf for years. Glad I never ditched it. I only got it because I owned every Clayfighter before it. Interestingly, I think 63 1/3 is a better game
The N64 is a transformative console and so important, but so much of the games for it are really difficult to play today if you didnt play them at the time and have nostalgia for them. This is the console that did so much of the groundwork for modern gaming in terms of how to navigate 3D spaces, use free moving cameras etc. But they are almost all rough by modern standards, because you're the industry understanding of these things be created in front of you in these games. The N64 crawled so everything that came after could run.
The N64 had some bangers and they seemed too far apart. It felt like '97 and '98 were the peak years and then slowed down again while Sony was just absolutely cruising the whole time.
Man if you had goldeneye, Mario kart the legend of Zelda and no mercy or wrestlemania 2000. Or NFL blitz you’re having so much fun. It was a great time to be alive because of the four player capability most consuls didn’t have that.
Man, all the games you don't really like, are all the ones we played. We had goemon in Alaska. Rampage was a great blockbuster renter for me. 1080 we loved. Rented clayfighter too. As a 12 year old, I had fun for a weekend. I saved and read thst wwf war zone game for 3 weeks for ps1 tho. I was kinda dissapointed, but the nostalgia of me buying it, I was blinded by that glitter. Now, I look back, ir was mid. Blitz was the SHIZZZZZZ!! I littery just bought WCW revenge like 1 month ago.
Dual heroes is bad, but it's got nothing on Beast Wars Transmetals when it comes to just abject garbage fighters. Also, I'll always remember knife edge for a toonami review that said they couldn't beat the third level...so it sucked, which was very funny as a kid. (though it is VERY hard) (the winter olympics were held in 1998, so the mix of early 3d, the 90's being all about extreme sports, and snowboarding being the coolest extreme sport, is probably why you had 3 snowboarding games.)
This was the year I got mine in middle school. I definitely didn’t know if I should jump ship for the PS1 or stick with tried and true Nintendo. Thankfully, I had friends that had a PS1, and the year after that that same friend with the modded ps1 that would play burned games got a Dreamcast. Dreamcast was a super cool system and also played burned games on that.
Snowboard Kids is an awesome game. The Japanese copy is about 40 bucks cheaper than the US copy. I just swapped out the back plate of the cartridge with a busted copy of another game and saved myself some money. There isn't much that needs to be read in the game, so it works out just fine.
I have tons of expensive games from 1980-Now they just sit on my shelves still looking perfect as they were bought back in the 80s/90s/00s I have every console tons of games
0:16 I have that Michael Jackson Album. I also have the Weird Al parody of it. It's funny how the original says "Bad" and Weird Al's version says "Worse". lol
I can tell you have not played Space Station Silicon Valley by the way you described it. You should try playing it, it is very fun! Underrated for sure.
I was a kid back then, rented a lot but my parents gave me just one game per year (that's rough), I remember playing Banjo Kazooie extensively as this was the game of the year, John Riggs must be much older than me because I'm old but don't have a half white beard yet 😂
WCW/nWo Revenge is an amazing game for the N64 in 1998 and still is today VPW 64 VPW2 are the best and WT Revenge WM2000 and NM are awesome as well I’ve seen and have all from 1980-Now what a life of gaming
Compare these fighting games to Tekken 3 and Soul Edge. The 2 PS1 games were so far ahead. The PS1 was def the best system ever for fighting games and RPGS.
I loved playing Henry's house. One of my favourite games and the main reason I want this. There was so many other great games that are not included like Dan strikes back and zybex. How easy is it to put games onto. I don't own a PC so are you still able to put them on? Do you have to pay for extra games?
Watching your videos makes me so happy that I skipped the N64. My neighbor had it so I didn't play a lot of games except 007 and Mario Kart. The camera movement for me was so bad on a lot of games but I get it that it was the deal for it's time. I'm with you. I'd rather play a 2D platform than a crappy 3D game.
Twisted Edge definitely was a better title than 1080. It has some really cool effects and colorization. Boss Game Studios really was boss. Top Gear Rally, Twisted Edge, but my favorite was World Driver Championship (which has a hi-res mode.) I almost want to dust off my n64 to play these now.
Mystical Ninja worst problem was the fact that its release was totally killed by Zelda. It's a fun platformer with a huge world and RPG elements developed by KCEO which were the ones that made the franchise great. All in all, to me it was one of the most enjoyable games in the platform. It was definitely a good effort made with love. Some of the world elements are a little bland... but the levels, bosses and side quests were top.

John Riggs' overwhelming positivity and likeability just improve my mood and daily life drastically. It's like medicine
He’s the same in person.
Yep. There are other reviewers who I watch for comedy or whatever, but John's videos are just comfy and inviting. Not a lot of people have the personality to create that atmosphere.
Just wish he actually knew a little more about the subject matter. So many things he’s says just aren’t correct.

I was in a bad mood until I saw you made this video. Thank you John.

The box borders were a nice touch. A lot of banger games this year.
these are my favorite
videos you do thanks John!
No Mercy all the way. Keep the N64 games coming.
I actually preferred Wrestlemania 2000 due to having full entrances.
WCW/nWo Revenge was pretty sweet too.
in 1998 for "Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time" on the N64 you could put in your own name & i would change Link to Kenny! When he died i would yell out:
"They killed Kenny, You Bastards!" Ha-Ha!
I remember buying Yoshi Story the day it came out. I went home and beat it and thought, “is that it? I want my $60 back.”
Body Harvest was one of my favorite N4 games. The studio that made it would go on to be a driving force with Rockstar making GTA and you can see the genes of GTA in the controls of this game. The maps and exploring easter eggs was unlike anything else in 1998
John, you are so positive!! If I am feeling down, I watch one of your videos and immediately they lift me up!! Thanks and Happy Gaming!
I have zero nostalgia for n64. But ehatever video you put up, i watch. Cheers Riggs
Your best video so far ! Love the channel :D
Definitely love these vids. Keep em coming.
All you needed on N64 in '98 was Banjo-Kazooie and WCW/nWo Revenge.
This is going to sound weird but robotron 64 is my favorite n64 game. I'm an old arcade fan and robotron 64 is a perfect example of how to update a classic game to a then modern console while maintaining the original gameplay
Body Harvest is one of those games that just *Barely* misses being a really good game, but its still a relatively fun romp.
Great video !!!! Lots of titles I never heard of !!!
My day just got good! John Riggs video!!!
Thank you for your nice comments about twisted edge extreme snowboarding. As a game tester on that title, I knew it wasn’t as good as 1080. But I tested cartridge games for the Nintendo 64 and that’s awesome!

This channel is easily top 5 best TH-cam channel for me. Always amazing content.

The funny thing is as a kid you didn’t get new games often so if you got a bad game you played it anyways and grow to love it
Seeing the Ken Griffey Jr. Baseball really hit me. I loved that game so much when i was a kid. I haven't played it since 99-2000 or seen any gameplay footage since then. N64 gets a bad rap for a lot of things, but there were some decent games on the system, and this list had at least a few of them 👍
imo Banjo-Kazooie was a wonderful game for the N64!! Mission Impossible I sorta feel people expected to be like Goldeneye? Rogue Squadron was HOT.
state of the art graphics, and incredible sound effects
1998 was amazing year for n64. One game you forgot to mention WCW/Nwo Revenge top selling fighting game of 98
OoT and Rogue Squadron were my most played games on the system and still are.
had so mucb fun with the blitz games back in the video store days
Could have sworn I played Mystical Ninja the same year I got my N64, in 1997. Surprised it apparently wasn’t out until the following year
Yeah, my problem with n64 was that PC gaming was just so far superior at the time and I had already moved on to PC.
Yeah by then it was Saturn PS1 PC and going on to Dreamcast and PS2
Man, all the games you don't really like, are all the ones we played. We had goemon in Alaska. Rampage was a great blockbuster renter for me. 1080 we loved. Rented clayfighter too. I remember getting Star wars rogue squadron whenever that came out (98-99?). That was a lot of fun
Dual heroes is bad, but it's got nothing on Beast Wars Transmetals when it comes to just abject garbage fighters.
Also, I'll always remember knife edge for a toonami review that said they couldn't beat the third level...so it sucked, which was very funny as a kid. (though it is VERY hard)
(the winter olympics were held in 1998, so the mix of early 3d, the 90's being all about extreme sports, and snowboarding being the coolest extreme sport, is probably why you had 3 snowboarding games.)
It’s too bad that they haven’t made a Mario Snowboarding game yet 🤔🤔🤔
It'd sell great!
every time i think you couldnt possibly pick another year AND another console, You do it again Riggs, You Son of a ---- Im In! 😅
Slobulus was my favorite Madball.
There isn't much that needs to be read in the game, so it works out just fine.
i have a legit calyfighters sculpters cut i found at a vintage stock for 15 bucks...best day of my life so far!
How much would you be willing to take to part with that game?
I have tons of expensive games from 1980-Now they just sit on my shelves still looking perfect as they were bought back in the 80s/90s/00s I have every console tons of games
0:16 I have that Michael Jackson Album. I also have the Weird Al parody of it. It's funny how the original says "Bad" and Weird Al's version says "Worse". lol
I can tell you have not played Space Station Silicon Valley by the way you described it. You should try playing it, it is very fun! Underrated for sure.
What would an electric snowboard do that gravity doesn’t ? 😊
Um no John, we did not all rent glover. I'd say most didn't even rent it.
I was a kid back then, rented a lot but my parents gave me just one game per year (that's rough), I remember playing Banjo Kazooie extensively as this was the game of the year, John Riggs must be much older than me because I'm old but don't have a half white beard yet 😂
Rampage world tour man i love that game
War Zone is awesome. It sounds better with midi than compressed. Jeff Hardy did the moves. If memory serves. Rocky lookks as he did at the time.
Riggs the Rabbit! Riggs the Rabbit! 1998 was the best year for Nintendo 64!
WCW/nWo Revenge is an amazing game for the N64 in 1998 and still is today VPW 64 VPW2 are the best and WT Revenge WM2000 and NM are awesome as well I’ve seen and have all from 1980-Now what a life of gaming

I agree with you on Jrpg's, but Imo the Sega Saturn had the best fighting games of 5th Gen. And the Saturn controller was perfect for them!
