I grew up very poor until my dad got a new job with a huge salary increase in the late 90s. So I didn’t have many genesis games but I did own X-men 2 and Comix Zone. Love both of those games. Ended up FINALLY beating Comix Zone many years later as a young adult. I also remember the bonus CD it came with. Lots of really good music in there. It helped shape my musical taste as well.
Toy Story really pushed the Genesis, no idea why they didn't do a 32X version, it would have been even better. Maybe I'm just bitter, because I had a 32x and I say that about a lot of games at this time. It's true though!
The 16-bit era may be the definitive era of video games. You look at Sega Genesis in 1989 and SNES in 1991 and how so many of those early games still looked 8-bit or like they barely advanced 8-bit, never mind the really good games. Then you go to the end with SNES and Genesis games in 1995+ and they're dang near PlayStation quality, like Exo Squad, Chrono Trigger, Gunstar Heroes, Donkey Kong Country, Star Fox... Not to mention we were generally drifting away from classic arcade-style gaming and into more story-driven cinematic games.
The Punisher game from 2004 on PS2 and Xbox is the game you’re looking for! It was made by Volition (Red Faction and Saints Row) and is a great representation of The Punisher. It has the same guy who played The Punisher in the 2004 movie as the voice actor. It’s one of my favorite 6th gen games, give it a try!
Great video. I loved how you included the game covers while showing the gameplay. This video format was really good. It's also cool that you included when the game is available on the Genesis Mini. Congratulations on the great video and content (:
I’m so happy to see you put Adventures of Batman and Robin on the list. It’s my all time favourite game and I bought a Sega Genesis just for the game. Still haven’t beaten it to this day though I’ve gotten close.
Spot Goes to Hollywood was also on the PS1. I remember seeing a walkthrough in a magazine (I want to say EGM but I could be totally wrong) and all of the artwork looked soo good that once I saw it in the wild I just had to get it. There was some big lotto thing going on and everyone was rushing to this small town for tickets or whatever was going on there.. Anyway, my parents took me along and I went to this store while they were doing whatever with tickets and whatnot. Back then, the area I lived in only carried some of the games that were currently popular and not a lot of what you really wanted. What you really wanted was shown in magazines and definitely unattainable. The internet wasn't really a thing then so you had to work with what you found in front of you. Long story short, I got it, it was not good. I died constantly and found the isometric controls atrocious. I did fight on in hopes of seeing a cool cutscene with great animation (yes, we used to actually look forward to cutscenes back then.) Never made it far, didn't have a memory card. Repurchased it as an adult and never even went back to it. It was an art piece for me.
Oh, 1995 and Mega Drive (for we europeans), what a nostalgia hit for me. Some really great games here John, and I mean 90% of the games on this list are decent in the worst case, excellent stuff or even masterpieces in the best cases. I am italian, the Gargoyles animated series was a smash hit on the TV here, but we never ever seen the Mega Drive game unluckily: I discovered it only recently on my Everdrive and...oh man, that game drives me insane, it's so cryptic! But it's also really good, nice music too. Generally speaking, 16-bit has been the last great era of a certain type of gaming. Yes, we had also the Playstation after that but the 16-bit era had something that felt chaotic but also fantastic at the same time. Maybe I say that because most of the games aged way better if compared to the Playstation ones: even in the 32-bit era we had incredibile ads (such a great creativity by Sony) and the first steps of some amazing franchises, but if we come back to most of those games today the gameplay feels rough. Really rough. For my taste, the 16-bit have been the last great era of "pick up and play" kind of games. The only following eras' games I'm still able to play nowadays are the arcade racing style games and some platform games like Klonoa and Crash Bandicoot. It's my limit, I admit that.
Butterbean was a monster in the ring. Hit like a truck and had a chin made of steel. Seemed like such a nice guy too. Man I didn't realize how big of a year 1995 was for me in gaming as a kid...so many big games from my childhood, that would have put me at 11 then. The Ooze too...I got that game on clearance as a kid and LOVED it. Wanted a modern version of that for so long, and then eventually we got Carrion which I guess is close enough. Comix Zone is one of my top three favorite Genesis games too! It is a challenge, but it's a good challenge. I love that one. Also wild that in the same year both one of the best Batman games, and the worst both came out. And man, Garfield: Caught in the Act. Another game I LOVED as a kid. The graphics blew me away as a kid, because it looked so much like the comics and cartoon. And man, it was a really fun platformer too. I thought it was really neat how you went inside of the TV in between the levels too. As a kid that game blew me away. I also played an absurd amount of both Earthworm Jim 2 and Revolution X, lol. The latter was from growing up in a classic rock household. So my dad made sure to buy it for me because he wanted to play it too, lol. Fun Fact with Earthworm Jim 2 for me personally, it was actually my introduction to the Moonlight Sonata.
Comix Zone might be my favorite Genesis game. Top 3 for sure. Controls are on point, music is fantastic, and all in a unique presentation. Honorable mentions for Vectorman and Earthworm Jim 2. I played both of those a lot.
I find it crazy that no indie devs seem to even be working on anything close to a spiritual successor, and we never got a Road Redemption 2. The first game was low budget, and still missing the Road Rash aesthetic and everything, but it was nice when people were at least making games that were similar. (I think that studio is the one working on that timetravel/man brings modern weapons to medieval times and goes crazy-game that looked really cool, at least)
Best Sega Genesis games of 1995 1. Vectorman 2. Beyond Oasis 3. Adventures of Batman & Robin 4. Ristar 5. Road Rash 3 6. Crusader of Centy 7. Comix Zone 8. X-Men 2 Clone Wars 9. Earthworm Jim 2 10. Toy Story Plus many more great games. Absolute fantastic year for the Genesis. It would be the last great year as releases for Genesis slowed to a trickle in 1996.
Beyond Oasis was one of the half dozen games I found at Goodwill, along with a couple 3-button controllers and a couple 6-button controllers. I think in total, I think I paid $15. Every game was complete in the plastic box and one was more valuable than the last. Beyond Oasis came with a mint cardboard box and the manual. I didn’t even own a Genesis. I flipped all the games except Beyond Oasis on Marketplace, went to my retro game store, bought my first Genesis, and a pile of classics, but I can’t recommend Beyond Oasis enough. I couldn’t put it down.
Absolutely loved Comix Zone! Fun gameplay, neat idea, killer soundtrack. It's not easy, for sure, but there are not-so-obvious ways to help you progress through the levels and ways to beat the bosses. I also really liked Spot Goes to Hollywood. I realize the controls weren't the best, but it was still fun.
I laughed out loud when he said "we should make that happen...somebody should make that happen, I can't...I do not have the power..."6:03 It was just like tiny little sad moment then BAM! on to the rest.
7:15 Oh my gosh, one of the few TH-camrs to pronounce the name Ristar properly! 😂I loved 1995 MD games. Later MD game years are my favourite for releases. We never got a few of these games. Also I feel the MD version of Batman Forever is quite underrated. 😊
Another great video! I think the 16 bit era was great! I still play several games from that time period. While some didn't age well, there are quite a few games that are still great games to play. The Road Rash games were and are still a lot of fun, 👍
Thanks for these videos John. It was these types of videos and your best/worst series that brought back my nostalgia and got me collecting video games. Keep up the good work. Cheers sir
The only thing that saved Justice League Task Force for me was the soundtrack. Also enjoyed Road Rash 3 FAR more than the other Genesis entries, probably because you could upgrade your bike parts and steal opponents weapons
Beyond Oasis and X-Men 2 are genuinely some of my favorite games for the Genesis; the former was a great Action-Adventure with some light Brawler mechanics, and the latter let you play as the X-Men with no limit on your mutant powers, so you could just go nuts with them. Light Crusader is great, too, though some of those puzzles (PENUMBRA!) will haunt me for the rest of my days. The Scooby-Doo game has great humor, too; I played it pretty recently, and was surprised at how dark some of the jokes were.
Totally unrelated to the video game, but my favorite part of the "Gargoyles" TV show was that outside of Goliath (and Demona) none of the other gargoyles ever had names, so they were able to decide what they wanted to be known by -- something about that just seemed really cool to me. Also, early on in the show, Xanatos (voiced by Jonathan Frakes) said a "swear" (I want to say it was "damn", but I can't remember the specific word), and as a younger person (12 at the time), I was like "whoaaa"..... great video, as always.... Thanks!
Genesis is such a great system. I was lucky enough to have a friend that lived down the street from me growing up as a kid that had the Sega Channel for years so i got exposed to a lot of genesis games that way.
Yeah Exosquad was an animated series throughout 1993-‘94. Garry Chalk and Michael Donovan did voice work on it. I had some of the action figures based on the cartoon.
The Great Circus Mystery was cool, the different costumes abilities were fun. Adventures of Mighty Max gave me almost as much motion sickness as Descent. It was really rough, the way the screen scrolled up and down, too much.
They actually did remake Phantasy Star 1 and 2, but they didn't do 3 and 4. Sadly, it was a japan only, PSP game. I recommend checking those out if you can, they did an AMAZING job of expanding the characters and story. Not sure if they did an English translation hack for it. I hope one day they actually bring those games to the west, or just remake them again.
Exo Squad was an awesome cartoon. I watched through it recently with a friend. I had never heard of it as a kid, so I have no nostalgia for it, but it is definitely worth the watch today.
The Gargoyles cartoon is amazing. It's super well written. There are plot twists in later seasons that they planned all along and they're huge. I love that several Star Trek actors are voicing characters too. It's worth a binge all the way through.
X-men was fun but very hard, I like games that are easy with just a touch of difficulty, but not to hard cause I feel gaming should be relaxing not getting irritated
You didn't mention the Sega Nomad. I got it soon after release with Fantasy Star 4 and holy crap, I was a Sega fan after that. I had a SNES but I remember after getting the Nomad I took a break from the SNES. Also, never thought about it, but yeah, I was still playing Sega games when the PS1 came out. I'm confused about dates in my head. I usually didn't play games when they were new, I played them years after. Most of the time I didn't get a system on release either.
I was one of the poor schmoes who had a Sega 32x.... and the thing is, it could have been a great transitional system, it just needed more games. If you look up other TH-cam videos, you'll learn that there was at least 20-30 games cancelled for the system. Anyway 1995 still an OK year for the Genesis, but at this point, everyone knew they better upgrade to the next gen soon.
I remember things about Demolition Man having stuff that was extreme by today's standards, like the blood I think. That and Robocop vs Terminator, where every enemy is a glob of blood when you shot them.
Unless they were never beaten, there are no "winning" cartridges of Vectorman around. From what I understand, when you win the prize, you had to surrender your cartridge and they replaced it with a standard version of the game. Which makes sense because once someone found the number they could just give it out to other people
Hey John! I'd like to learn more about this disease you mentioned in this video. I kinda feel like I have this brain fog and memory loss as well and I'm wondering if it might be related. My memory loss and brain fog is from early moments in my life. I moved to Florida when I was 10 but I have a hard time recalling any significant memories before that time. Certain things I can remember but I can't be sure if thats just from family members telling me the stories or actual memories. It's really frustrating at times and depressing that I don't remember a lot of my earlier development.
Oh, it's just Grave's Disease (named after the doctor, not the destination) - I had an overactive thyroid in high school. Now I have the opposite after they killed my thyroid.
Man, I had played way more 95-Mega Drive games than I thought. Most on emulation, but I actually did play Garfield game on real hardware back in the day. Not a high-class platformer with super-slick controls, but I really liked the graphical variety with each level. Not so high standard, but it was still fun. Best game on this list is Phantasy Star 4 to me, and it is sad that every attempt by SEGA to get a remake train going just crashes and burns before the whole quadrilogy shows up. Best one in the series, I say- though Ristar is a great runner-up. Earthworm Jim 2 charmed me with it's humor, but honestly I had more fun with Ristars gameplay, and I liked the bright look more than Jim's wackiness. Even if Jim's style was definitely the winner in the general zeitgeist, as evidenced by that wrestling clip. The past truly is a peculiar place...
X-Men 2 might be my favorite game on the Genesis. The ONLY thing that sucks about it is it's one of a handful of games towards the end that used cardboard boxes instead of the plastic clam shell ones. Making in good condition CIB copies a royal pain to find.
Regarding Batman & Robin, there's a TH-cam channel called Coding Secrets that's run by a guy who worked on quite a few Genesis/Megadrive games. I'm fairly sure he's got a video where he goes into detail about the tricks he pulled to create some of the visual effects in that game.
How have i never heard of Light Crusader before now?! And it's a Treasure game on top of that! I was big into gaming magazines at the time, but some how it slipped past my radar back then and all the years since until seeing this video. Looks like all those classic isometric adventure games, but without the squat art style, I'll have to check it out.
Actually, _Phantasy Star_ and _Phantasy Star II_ both got total, top-to-bottom remakes in Japan for the PS2 -- there's quite a few gamplay vids out there if you're curious. PS III and PS IV have yet to be remade, however.
Yeah, I think that guide book being bundled with PS4 was probably the main reason it cost that much at retail back then! If the cartridge and box combined were all that was released, then the price would've been cheaper! Nintendo did something similar to that with Earthbound on SNES and I think that was even more expensive than PS4 because of all those knick knacks bundled with that big Earthbound box that also contained the game itself!
I gotta try that road runner game, it actually looks fun. They also have that SNES one (Death Valley Rally) that is kind of a sonic riff. I'm not big on that one, its just too fast for its own good.
That’s what great about Codie games Some people will trash a game while other found pure enjoyment out of it: Batman forever to me was dope looking at it in action . All they had to do was unclunk the gameplay a bit. I think made the sprite a little smaller and animate a little faster
That's the wrong footage for spot Goes to Hollywood that's not the Genesis version that looks like the Sega Saturn version. Sorry, just trying to be helpful. Wasn't sure if you noticed.
Would love to hear more about this Vector Man rabbit hole... do these cartridges still exist? How many exist? Do you own one and not know it?? Is the new stock market of video games?? 😮

I grew up very poor until my dad got a new job with a huge salary increase in the late 90s. So I didn’t have many genesis games but I did own X-men 2 and Comix Zone.

I can't tell if this channel makes me feel old or feel young.
Yes
first one, then the other.
Old. We're old if we had Genesis as kids. It's ok, I've learned to accept it.

Sega Was My Favorite 💯
X Men 2 made me think I had a bad emulation or something because it just starts in a level.

Life cycle still goes on just in a smaller way it’s far from a dead duck even now in 2024
I totally got most of my Genesis games in '95.
Powerball and Herzog Zwei both churn out SO many hours of fun. And they were way ahead of their times
Gargoyles was Saturday morning originally, and has a lot of Star Trek TNG actors voicing characters.
Wile E. Coyote is my spirit animal. I definitely played a SNES game as Road Runner.
Whatever happened to the Wile E./ Road Runner movie?
lost in the ether. Hopefully someone at the studio will 'leak' it
Desert demolition, what a fun fun game
yup, fun but short lived fun at that.
Yeah it was great
Thanks, John! Would love to see a follow-up on the different Vector Man roms!
Love it❤. Thank you for a great video on a friday😊😊
I wish the Nomad came out when Game Gear did.
X-Men 2 Clone Wars was one of the best SEGA games by far to us as kids. Well hell, I still play it to this day!
Love these videos. They make me go back in time.
I remember things about Demolition Man having stuff that was extreme by today's standards, like the blood I think. That and Robocop vs Terminator, where every enemy is a glob of blood when you shot them.
Needed some comfort videos this morning, and yours always fit the bill.
Was just watching the 94 episode, and saw this one!!
In northern British Columbia, Mighty Max came on at 4:30AM on certain days and I only ever caught it twice, was my white whale
John Riggs… Gargoyles was THE cartoon!
So glad to see this series continue! 😄
What a great channel. Keep it up man.
Comix Zone was the first game I thought of when I saw the title.
16:57, I just realized that the cat could be an inspiration for the Cuphead team when they were designing the rat and cat boss.
Man I still play hours of demolition man on snes to this day, favorite movie game of all time.
Unless they were never beaten, there are no "winning" cartridges of Vectorman around. From what I understand, when you win the prize, you had to surrender your cartridge and they replaced it with a standard version of the game. Which makes sense because once someone found the number they could just give it out to other people
Oh, I'm sure there are some carts from people who never beat it.
@@JohnRiggsI’d be so down to see a hunt for a winning vectorman cartridge episode!
@JohnRiggs sorry to hear that, I'll have to look into it. Thanks Riggs!
I loved playing Circus Mystery as a kid id playing for days at a time even when at the time i also had a ps1 to play as well
Man, I had played way more 95-Mega Drive games than I thought.
I grew up with Butterbean. Same hometown.
Did you ever run into him at the store or anything?
@ Saw him at the gym all the time. Held a punching bag for him. He owned a restaurant for a while. I moved away for work, so he may still have that.
Loved the Exo Squad cartoon. The game was fun, but that cartoon was amazing for kids animation at the time.
They did a remake/enhanced edition of Phantasy Star I on the Eshop a few years ago. Not sure why II through IV got left out.
Sadly they canceled the "AGES" line that had them re-release a couple of their old games with modern QoL updates. Sales weren't satisfying, alas.
12:06 - Bart Gunn remembers Butterbean 🤣🤣
My old school wrestling fans nodding their head
How have i never heard of Light Crusader before now?! And it's a Treasure game on top of that! I was big into gaming magazines at the time, but some how it slipped past my radar back then and all the years since until seeing this video. Looks like all those classic isometric adventure games, but without the squat art style, I'll have to check it out.
Yeah John, in the manual for Vectorman it says you can fill out a form in the manual to enter to win the contest as another way to enter!
My favorite game from 1995 was Light Crusader.
Exo squad was a fantastic series! Punched way above its weight class, and the toys were some of the best from the 90’s
Actually, _Phantasy Star_ and _Phantasy Star II_ both got total, top-to-bottom remakes in Japan for the PS2 -- there's quite a few gamplay vids out there if you're curious. PS III and PS IV have yet to be remade, however.
Hey can you lists of games that are cheap and will probably remain cheap that are really good? For example Sonic 2.
Wave Race 64
I liked Batman Forever game!!! dont understand why everybody hate it...
That’s what great about Codie games
Some people will trash a game while other found pure enjoyment out of it:
Batman forever to me was dope looking at it in action .
All they had to do was unclunk the gameplay a bit. I think made the sprite a little smaller and animate a little faster
😂 that part I don’t want to even talk about it. It’s not that bad, its ok on two player. If it was easier it would be a better game.
Love the Phantasy Star series.. I own 1 through 4 CIB. 🙂 Actually playing through 2 at the moment.. just started the blue dam.. lol
That's the wrong footage for spot Goes to Hollywood that's not the Genesis version that looks like the Sega Saturn version.
Sorry, just trying to be helpful.
Wasn't sure if you noticed.
Oh, maybe. It looked the same to me but my eyesight isn't great. It does look fantastic on Genesis.
Have 2 of them and still playing them,,,,,,,
If I recall there was a pretty cool Punisher game on PS2 and Xbox back in the day that nailed the character pretty well.
The last boss sees you as a serial killer. 😂
Going to have to check out Desert Demolition on the Sega Genesis!
Adventures of Batman and Robin and Phantasy Star IV. It was a good year++
Fantasy star 4 did not come with a strategy guide. That was just the instruction manual. It was the second game that came with a strategy guide.
Would love to hear more about this Vector Man rabbit hole... do these cartridges still exist? How many exist? Do you own one and not know it?? Is the new stock market of video games?? 😮
Sega Genesis games of 97. Check out The Lost World. Some crazy awesome graphical effects squeezed out of the aging Genesis.
