I don’t usually comment on people’s music choices but I’ll make an exception this time. Music wouldn’t have been a problem if it wasn’t 6 times louder than the voice. 🥴
I was able to use the same filter wrench I use for my Polaris filters to get the oil filter housing off. Although the upper area is machine to accept the "special" Toyota tool, they appeared to understand not all of us want to purchase one-off tools for a regular maintenance item like an oil change and provided us with an option to use a standard filter wrench at the lower edge. That was my experience on my "new to me" 2018 Tundra. Thanks for the video and looks like you will be having the oy change the oil here soon!
Thanks for taking the time to put out this video. The 5.7's are bullet proof engines. Only thing to check for next oil change is to make sure you change out the little O ring that sits inside where the drain plug for the cannister is.
@@kennethriley428 my truck spends a good amount of time towing and running alot of short trips around town, I just dont feel comfortable going 10k with oil changes on a $40k dollar investment, toyota probley just wants these trucks to become worn out by 100k miles so you will buy a new one. My transmission will also be getting serviced @50k rather then 100k miles, idc what the dealer or Toyota says
Toyota put the capacity at 8 quarts of full synthetic to extend the changes to 10,000 miles. Of course, if you own stock in an oil company, you may change it as often as you please. These trucks routinely go 500,000 miles without any engine issues. I think you'll be OK at the 10K service interval.
You the man! I am not use to the no housing oil filter on a Tundra. I've been a long time K&N guy in the past. Found a 10 pack of "oem" filters and orings for $45 on Amazon along with a $35 wrench and hose kit to drain it. Costco carries a 4 pack of the 0w20 Kirkland jugs for $65, cheaper by about $20 than 4 Amazon Basics oil jugs I use on my wife's Prius. Another video shot the oil filter holder with a brake cleaner or spray to clean it. I'm also buying some 6mil gorilla poly gloves from home depot. My dad never wore gloves with reloading or working on dirtbikes/cars so I'm trying to get in the habit of using gloves now that I have a baby who will probably want to help when he's your boys age! Great video!
I had the Toyoguard 2 year free oil change bullshit when I bought mine. I just changed the oil myself after watching your video and honestly judging by looking at the bolts & screws on the skid plate I don't think its ever been removed. I bet those hacks at the dealership probably just drained and refilled the oil without changing the filter. I'll be changing the oil myself from now on. Thanks for uploading this video. Super helpful
Did the oil on my wife’s 2016 Camry and had to chisel the filter housing and buy a new one. Had three years of free oil change and it seems Toyota never replaced the filter inside and just drained and replaced oil
Yep my two "free" oil changes at the dealership, at 10k and 20k, I don't think they changed the filter! I did my own change at 25k after seeing this video. Skid plate looks like it hasn't been touch, the filter housing was stuck as thought it never been removed and I had to hire a professional friend mechanic to remove the housing. The old filter was very dirty! Truck is 3 yrs old and has only 25k miles due to covid. I will never go back to that dealer again.
I at first was hesitant about changing the oil in my vehicle. After watching your video now I know I can do it. Thank you for sharing this easy to follow video. Like others I too enjoyed the music with the video. Again thank you.
Dude, this is THE BEST video on this process on planet earth. Toyota should pay off your truck for you just to have this on their website. Thanks! PS, about how much money do you spend an oil change? Not counting the tools you had to initially purchase
Thanks. I’d estimate around $40 ? I typically buy the oil in 5qt jugs and you don’t need all of it. I skimmed over the part where the smaller rubber gasket goes in the filter housing cap but it shows the basics.

It's much much easier if you install a Baxter oil filter modifications. You'll be able to use a canister oil filter. Also there are flip down oil drain plugs to make it even more easy. And cut a hole in the skid plate for Access to the filter without removing the skid plate. I have a front tow hitch over the skid plate, so I don't want or need to remove anything to get to the filter. Jmho.
Nice job and thank you! The skidplate can definitely be a pain (wish Toyota included an access door); Motivx tools are great; finally, I hope you replaced the smaller O-Ring for the oil filter drain plug :)
The smaller O-ring that comes with the filter goes under the steel oil cannister drain plug. I didn't see you replace it. Also, while that drain hose is nice, the little plastic nipple that comes with the filter is made to screw into the bottom of the cannister to allow the oil to drain out.
You are correct. I’ve changed the oil a few times since this video was recorded. I still use the drain hose I purchased but yes you can also just use the plastic piece that’s inside the new filter box.
The music is terrible but at least it's set at an ear splitting volume compared to your voice. That's a nice new truck, you might want to invest in a good torque wrench and a box of gloves 👍
You know I appreciate your video on how so am oil change on your truck I’m only 15 and have never done an oil change before and wanted to learn how bit it would be nice to include that you need a crush washer for the drain bolt
Good point. There should always be a crush washer when you remove the drain bolt. I’ve got 2 other oil change videos and I’ve started to call them out.
I accidentally stumbled onto this video coincidentally right before changing oil in my Tundra for the first time. Didn’t know that you have to access the oil filter for beneath. It would be great to see how to reset the maintenance timer.
After pricing the amount and type of oil needed for this oil change along with the special tool and taking off the skid plate is why I am paying the dealership $70 to do it.
the skid plate is easy, and the tools cheap. the skid plate take all the front bolts off and remove the last rearmost one last and its simple, it slides slightly to the left when you take it off, and goes back real easy. put the rearmost centre one back in and she almost lines herself up. I find it more convenient doing myself and do save a few bucks no question. I'd say its about half the cost.
My dealer charges $143 for an oil change/tire rotation service. I can do my oil changes in less than 30 minutes for for about $65 and Costco rotates the tires I purchased there free.
Best oil filter cap wrench for the job. Great choice. 👍 (Music, not so much.) Also, at 3:48 I can see that your oil filter cap wrench was not totally seated on the cap even though it still worked. It should have been rotated 180°.
The Toyota dealer does not use Toyota oil as it is not cost effective. The dealer that does my oil changes uses Mobil 1, Ow20 same thing you have here. I know it is easy to do the oil changes at the house, but taking it to the dealer, I don't have to worry about the old oil. They charge $95 for the service and I get a free wash. The oil alone is about $65 if you do it yourself. 8.5 quarts with filter change.

They take care of basically two oil changes and 4 tire rotations at no cost by simply visiting your Toyota dealer. I am not sure how this can be saving money or time when taking it to the dealer literally costs nothing.

It was built in Texas, however it was initially a Canadian vehicle that was brought to auction in the US at the end of the year. There were tons of these trucks popping up at auction. How many miles did you have on the truck when you changed the oil?
Philip Kapsis around 3000 miles. It’s a 2018 however I bought it used and wanted to change it shortly after I bought it.
Who tightend the oil filter cover last. It’s like 27 newton pounds or something not 78 ft pounds. It’s just plastic lol
Can you get the oil filter wrench at Autozone or O' Reilly s?
F M it’s possible. Check their website out.
@@AndrewDeVries211is the wrench specific to the tundra filter?

No it works on all Toyotas with the cartridge system EXCEPT engines smaller than 2.0 liters like the 1.8 & 1.3 liter engines which accept the Motivx MX2321. And yes they are available on Amazon.
Good Video
Thanks bro
Thanks for the video! The music is crazy making tho:(
Forgot to reset ur oil on the dash
lose the music and its a great video
That thing have a hemi?
It’s a iforce
Eselente 👷👍
Man what a bunch of aggravation to change the oil! My Tacoma is the easiest I’ve ever owned.
Good video thanks! Just remove crappy music.
Wait until that filter housing is not so new and CRACK
Not likely to be a problem as long as it is installed with the proper torque.
@@stevensevek6151 what is the torque? 15 lbs?
Mine cracked... Mine was also WAY over-torqued by my lube shop. I do my own oil changes now lol
Hope my kids help me out lol
I guarantee he doesn't even have this truck anymore . Why ? Because he didn't run 5w 30 Full Synthetic oil in it. That's why 😅
Great video but the music is lame
Good video but sorry, the music is awful.
Good video very irritating music
probably the worst vehicle ive had to change the oil on.Toyota makes it way harder than it needs to be.Still love the truck though
I couldn’t agree more. I was very disappointed when I eventually found where the oil filter housing was. Why not just put it under the hood? If it was very straight forward I would have never made this video.
I’ll never understand why people think they can record a good “how to” video of something they’ve never done before.
