  • Changing Oil on 2016 Toyota Tundra, 3rd Generation Tundra with 5.7L V8
    Parts:
    1. 8qts 0-W20 Synthetic oil
    2. Oil filter part # 04152YZZA4. This kit should include 2 o-rings, 1 big and 1 small www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_no...
    3. Drain plug washer # 9043012031
    4. Fumoto Drain Valve - Optional. This drain valve would make changing oil a lot less messy. I didn’t have one for this video.
    www.fumotooildrainvalve.com/?g...
    Tools:
    1. Wrench cap for removing/installing the filter cap
    Something like this www.amazon.com/Motivx-Tools-T...
    2. Oil Filter Drain hose (optional)
    www.amazon.com/Toyota-Lexus-S...
    3. 3/8” Rachet
    4. 3” extension
    5. 6” extension (optional)
    6. Breaker bar (optional)
    7. 10mm socket
    8. 12mm socket
    9. 14mm socket
    10. Torque wrench
    11. Ramps or floor jack, jack stands, and wheel chock
    12. Drain pan that can hold 2+ gallons. But I think a 5-gallong paint bucket might work better.
    13. Shop towels
    14. Safety glasses
    15. Gloves

    Friend, I take a "Hefty - Contractor Bag" and cut open one side of it, and I cut open the bottom too. Then I lay it out under the vehicle as a very effective shield for my garage floor. This way oil does not splash onto the floor, as the opened up "Contractor Bag" is quite big. Also, I leave the oil pan drain plug OUT while I remove the filter element housing. I don't bother with opening the mini-cap of the filter element housing either. I don't care that the housing has some oil in it when I remove it. Once I screw the housing OUT, I dump it's old oil into the the same "catch" that contains the oil from the pan. I rub NEW SYNTHETIC oil all over the NEW 'O' ring, and install the NEW 'O' ring into it's PROPER groove on the housing exterior. Once I put the NEW element into the housing, I slowly pour a cup (8 oz) or more, of new SYNTHETIC oil into the center of the housing which gets absorbed by the new element. (I make sure NOT to over supply the element housing with oil.) At this point I carefully set the housing down where it won't get knocked over, and I install the drain plug with new crush washer to torque spec. 30 Ft/Pnd. Then I install the oil filled filter element housing, (with new filter element in place) tightening to the torque spec. 18 Ft/Pnd. New SYNTHETIC oil is then poured into the engine.

    Thanks for linking to our filter wrench and drain tools! We designed the hose to be long so that you could cut it to whatever length you needed. Looks like it worked well for you...great comprehensive overview of a late model Toyota oil change.

    I like to use those cheap Rubbermaid clear plastic storage containers as drain pans. Can get any size you need. Just wipe down after, and they double as my oil change storage box. Nice rounded lip to pour old oil into empty oil jugs for proper disposal/recycling.

    Get a Fomoto Oil Drain Valve or an EZ Drain Valve. I've had the same Fomoto DV on my last 3 cars. Before I sold each car, I'd transfer it to the new car. They never leak, ever, and no tools are needed to drain your oil. Might make your job that much faster and easier.

    • @szinski
      @szinski 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Seems to me that the Fumoto valve would leave some oil in the pan due to the threads protruding into the pan.

    • @dbfcrell8300
      @dbfcrell8300 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@szinski So what (said nicely)?.... all the bad crap comes out the minute you open the petcock. The residual filtered oil that's left in the pan is minuscule compared to the fresh oil you're putting in. Furthermore, there's always residual oil left in the gallies, oil pump and in the cyl head too. Every oil change is always 99.xx%, never 100%. Use good oil and do your change on time and your engine will be AOK. The Fomoto just makes it easier to do oil changes more often. JMHO

    • @stevensevek6151

      Why not?
      Oil pan drain plug torque: 40 N•m/30 ft lbs
      Oil filter cap torque: 25 (±5) N•m/18 (±3.5) ft lbs
      Oil filter drain plug torque: 13 N•m/10 ft lbs
      Try removing your oil filter cap first in case it won't budge.

    Can you drain most of the oil through the oil filter first since it shoots downward? Then drain the rest of the oil from the oil pan to prevent the splash? 🤔

    • @NK1794
      @NK1794  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't think it matters. You won't be draining any oil from the oil pan at the filter. Your best bet is a tall container like a paint bucket to minimize the splashing. Get a Fumoto drain valve so that future oil-change would be easier.

    Hi. Myself, I see NO use in the oil filter cartridge drain, AND I DON'T DO THAT. I drain the oil from the pan, then I remove the oil filter cartridge housing exactly the way you do it. Using the drain in the cartridge housing results in another 'O' ring replacement, and another cap being removed and reinstalled, and it's just not needed. At 6:16 you inserted text into the video indicating 30 ft/pd for installation of the oil filter cartridge HOUSING. On the drain plug that's the number, but I have found via research that on the filter cartridge housing the tightness should be 18.44 ft/pd.
    At 7:57 you begin to pull off the old 'O' ring, and it's REQUIRED, that people take note of EXACTLY where the 'O' ring is seated of the housing BEFORE it's pulled off. The new one MUST be seated EXACTLY where the old one was pulled from. If the 'O' ring is incorrectly seated THERE WILL BE OIL LEAKED!!!

    • @stevensevek6151
      @stevensevek6151 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Good points. But it is helpful to show the draining of the filter for those who prefer to do it that way. Just mention that most pros skip that step. 😉

      Since when do you need anything when you're using ramps unless you have a manual transmission then maybe blocking the wheels is advisable.

    Should put a pair of jack stands under you, they may save your Life. Are your ramps plastic or metal ? Looks plastic to me for a heavy truck. I've seen metal ramps bend and collapse too.

      Doing it yourself cuts that in half with superior components and the peace of mind it was done correctly. Too many places drain (or don't drain) the oil and replace with inferior components.

    Great video, but I stopped doing oil changes when I bought my 2017 Limited. Reason. #1. $160 for a complete oil/ filter change that lasts for 16,000km. (0/20full synthetic). Reason#2. If I did change my own oil, it is almost impossible to dispose of the used product.

    • @NK1794
      @NK1794  6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Are you in the US? I have no problem disposing used oil here. We can take them to most auto-part stores and Walmart. In San Jose I can also take it to the recycling center or simply leave it out at the curb on the trash pick-up day. They will pick it up and leave me a new jug to use next time. It's fun to do my own oil change and I know it's done right.

      Firstly, Toyota recommends oil changes every 5000 miles not almost 10,000 your 16,000 Kms converts to.

    Be warned the oil is not going to come straight down out of the pan. Its going to squirt at like a 30 - 45 degree angle twords the wheel as seen in this video. Be ready for it or its going all over your floor. Use a really big oil pan to catch it. Ask me how I know.....

    • @NK1794
      @NK1794  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If the truck is high up on ramps like in the video it's better to get something taller than a regular drain pan. I also have a drip pan under the drain pan to catch splashes.
