You have no idea how RICH this video would have made you...IF you shot your video from the inside. With a really great view of your foot/shoe vigiously pumping the hell out the pedal, the way we can all see from the carb! Oh Well Jim, maybe next time.
Your truck starts about like the 70 Fury 3 with a 383 that I used to have....LOTS of cranking and LOTS of pumping...almost catching but not quite and then more pumping and more cranking..... Cool truck though! :)
I had a 1968 just like yours. It had the large Carter BBD 2-barrel and was a bitch to start. I found an aftermarket Stromberg carburetor that fit it perfectly, and it started much easier. Pumped it twice, cranked about 5 seconds, and it lit. I adjusted the choke pulloff just so it would not flood out -- but was still quite rich -- loped and smoked a bit but once it ran about 5 minutes it was fine. Drove much easier as well. Better throttle response.
I am a dodge man through and through and you could have saved your battery nearly running down and all that wear and tear on your starter by pouring a little primegas in the carb.I allways do that saves time and everthing. But only if the truck has been sitting a long while. Even with the choke closed i bet the bowl on the carb was dry thats why it took so long to start.Sounds like a good old truck .I got 67 dodge truck myself love it.P S a new fuel pump and i bet it would start up alot faster.
On starting your truck just a cap full of gas from the lid of a antifreeze jug would save your poor starter when you run the starter that long i guranteet you its very hot and a big drain on the battery as well. What alot of folks i see stating old trucks specially old dodges don't know is under the pump in the bowl of the carb is a steel ball and if its not seated good it lets the gas drain out the bowl and the carb goes dry.But after sitting long enough it will evaporate. But short time it won't
Hi i have had lots of old dodges and i never had to stay on the starter like that.I know 2 things i have had to buy fuelpumps when they get old they don't pump as good. But one other thing the bowls on those carbs will drain the gas out over nite some will and that makes bad starting too.And if that choke aint set right hard starting for sure.I would pour a little gas in one before i would wear the starter.I like them when i stand outside the door hit key running...They should
That's just a Mopar for you...They all start when they're ready to and not before...at least that's been my experience with them but I love them anyway. :)
i got admit that,s what being a cold start video is like !!!! good video! reminds me of the 85 chevette i have when she was cold blooded she wouldn,t start
LONG cold-starts with tons of pumping just go with a MOPAR. It's part of their "charm." I've had a 70 Fury and 76 and 77 Dodge pickups and they were all like that (still got the 76). The Fury (383) was by far the worst..It *sounded* like your truck starting...that allllmoosst start tease....but with mine, that went on for 10 minutes or so. LOL....I'm pretty sure back then my right leg was a lot stronger than my left...LOL
I sm sorry to hear about that blown head hasket. I know that is going to cost a good penny to fix, unless you are going to repair it yourself. Either way, good luck to you! Ken Palmer
when there's gas in the carburetor the overwhelming majority of the time a Chrysler will start faster than a Chevrolet or a Ford...it will hit on the first Turn or so.... now they were notorious for shity choke systems and after you started them you had to create enough vacuum by letting it run for a few minutes to open up the butterfly valve otherwise it would choke itself out and they were hard to restart.... other than that my Chrysler's have always started up faster than anything else I've ever had.
destroy my lower end how??? The more it cranks, the more oil pressure that builds up before it starts. This is something I dont drive and start up every once in a while..matter of fact, its been at least 6 months now since it ran..
I love to see cold starts wearing cowboy boots I like watching them when you're trying to start the car or truck
Agreed!
The sound of an old Dodge truck cranking during a hard start is one of the greatest sounds there is! Love this video!

Mopars dosen`t like to be cold started , it`s just their way of life .Love these long cranking
You're a patient man. A very patient man.
I wish I could have seen a shot of your foot pumping the pedal of the 1968 Dodge truck while you were trying to start it.

That took a good amount of cranking to get it fired up. You must have had a real strong battery in there!Good job and nice video.

this truck is possessed. it starts when its ready...lol..actually when the air cleaner isnt holding the choke closed, its starts much better..

yeah, I had one of my RV batteries there cause I knew it would eb cranking for a while...
Well, its from sitting for months on end. Its not driven yet due to it needing some work. I go out and run it to keep it oiled.
LOVE the ROAR of that ol' 383!!!
Cool videos....Hope you'll make some more too.
the carburetor on that thing with bone dry and when their bone dry they take a while to start doesn't matter what kind of car it is
The 68 runs good.

jiggled it off holding the choke closed..lol..
after i here it fire i stop cranking and pump it alot like twenty times then fires right up
That's really amazing how it started right up after you jiggled the air filter around....What's your secret? LOL
Have you started it up again lately? They're sometimes a *little* bit easier if they're fired up more often seems like.
So the choke was stuck open when you were first trying to start it up????

That truck is cursed and jinxed and very quadruple dog hexed to not want to start at all

The problem is not ENOUGH oil preasure from such a low RPM.
damm a big block with air

@TheOldcarlover .don't you know, everything is for sale for the right price..lol
IS YOUR TRUCK FOR SALE?
I couldn't have said it better! :)
and I bet your choke works too..no choke on this thing..
my dad had a truck like this in the eighties and he blew the motor
That truck is very very quadruple dog cursed to not want to start at all
luv hearing the starters try and turn over great truck luv it. check out my dodge
JBURNJROLL1, Watch your language!!!! What exactly does that expression mean anyway?
The make of the vehicle has nothing to do on how easy a vehicle starts. FYI the Chrysler 383 is well known to start up very fast +senorkaboom
Kyle Parker OK, I will rephrase. Too bad it is a POS Chrysler product.
That truck is quadruple dog jinxed quadruple dog cursed and very quadruple dog hexed to not want to start at all
i think your radiator rubber pipes 'r wasted
aply some WD 40 in the air intake
Why didn't you just throw some gas down the carb instead of destroying your lower end???????????????????????
@jmbeinbrech 700 bucks ? lol jk
once it starts, it runs great...too bad it has a blown head gasket...
