I recommend to watch it in its french dub, because as far as I can see the english dub mismatch between the lips of the characters and their voice is really high.

I don't think it's necessarily underated. It's just aimed at a different audience (middle aged man) than most other Ghibli movies. I for example didn't care that much for it because I'm probably not the target audience but I see why other people might like it. It was mostly because I didn't really know how to feel about all these grown men hitting on a teenager...But I guess it's better than castle in the sky where all the pirates fall in love with a literal child.
@@Stevem oh for sure I'm not saying that only middle aged men can enjoy it. I'm just saying It's probably meant to appeal more to an older age group, who would be able to relate to Porco more than a kid or a teenager would (I think Miyazaki said this himself).

Let's be honest. Going back to your video, it's Obvious that making this movie was a bit tricky for Miyazaki. I guess this is why it's a fifty fifty amongst people.
Sorry baby, gotta fly. Watched this when I was around 7 years old with my older bro, don't think any of Miyazaki's films stuck to me as much as Porco Rosso. Now 23, this film still leaves a bittersweet nostalgia in me whenever I hear its osts. Everyone references Spirited Away or Laputa or Totoro, and while I do agree to a certain extent of the achievement in these great films, Porco is what resonated to me the most while growing up from a child to a teenager to a young adult and eventually to an adult. Like Gina, I would also fall in love with a man who says to me, sorry baby, gotta fly. It's the chasing of those unstaying, fleeting moments in life that spurs us. It's wanting to grasp something unobtainable that makes it all the more romantic. And it's the act of trying to reverse something irreversible that made me fall in love with this pig.

Glad the Porco video was finally able to be released! This film's been on my watch list for ages, and I'm glad to see it's so well loved by so many (several people I talk to think it looks too odd to be anything but a comedy). Interesting how you brought up that the film was Miyazaki's "self indulgent project." Really makes you think, seeing as him being the oldest director still alive at Ghibli parallels Porco flying his plane alone in the clouds while the others fly away into heaven without him. Though, maybe I'm just reading into it too much! Great video!

Oh you will not believe how excited i was to see that you love this movie as much as i do! I loved your points, since for me it was always quite difficult to exactly pin point down the aspects that resonated so much with me and made this movie to one of my favourites among ghibli if not in general
As much as I like the English dub and of course the Japanese original, I actually really like watching Porco Rosso with the Italian dub. Maybe because it’s the setting but something about it just feels right. The Italians did a really great job dubbing this film!
I speak Japanese but I never understood this movie because the Japanese was too difficult for me and I finally was able to watch it in English today! It blew my mind how interesting the movie is and now I love it! It feels like the missing puzzle was filled.
I LOOOVE seeing fellow Porco Rosso lovers in the comments!!! I thought no one liked it. I've finally found my people!!!! My sister claims not to like it--she thinks because it's about a girl falling in love with a pig that is somehow sexist and I told her she was viewing it through an entirely incorrect lens!
Beautiful, accurate, well paced and touching entonation and script. Man, your voice and the way you speak in this review is one of the best narrations I have ever enjoyed. Keep up the good work mate!
I love it when people analyze Studio Ghibli movies. Thank you for analyzing this one. I really appreciate it when people give the audience a history lesson along with along with the video.
I just rewatched this on Saturday. This, Jin Roh, and Millennium Actress are in my top 5 favorite anime movies and i think the indirect tragedy of war, seen in the what is reaped for the survivors is somehow far more memorable and haunting than any blatant on screen violence to me. Jin Roh isnt outright war, but a representation of the violence experienced by people who are pawns or players in the military world.
I really hope your channel reaches 1million, they way you explain and put your heart and soul into the video makes me happy, it makes me inspired to create things that can't be done in a short time but a rather happy and enjoyable time. Thanks for that.
Genuinely great video, the film is definitely one of my very favourites and stands in parallel, albeit jocund instead of cynical, to Disco Elysium's location in the radical pantheon of contemporary art. A brilliant, beautiful film that left an impression on me since watching it with a partner years ago - originally because the thought of a cocky flying pig was (and still is) quite amusing.
Just watched Porco Rosso for the first time and this was the perfect vid to understand all the references I missed. Sorry to hear about the ghibli licensing situation. Hope you can make more like this in the future if you're still interested.
I absolutely love porco. I am surprised how different the english dub seems to be from the german. For example, the scene where the american pilot says "shut up and listen to the music". In the German dub he said "Such a song is enjoyed in silence!". In some parts I didn't recognice the sentences but maybe that's just my memorie failing me. Don't know why I wrote this, but I really enjoyed this video, especially some of the historical context.
Porco Rosso is my favorite ghibli as well. I’m a french speaker and i sometimes wish everybody could understand french for 2 hours, just to watch this movie french dub. It’s marvellous and i think it’s a big part of what made me fall in love with this movie. Elegant yet witty, in a very european way that i cant exactly describe. If you ever stumble upon the french version of this movie please give it a go, even if you don’t understand anything. Also, they kept the original japanese version of le temps des cerises in it!
Some of the most beautiful aerial scenes (in the filmo of a guy who loves flying vehicles) and the funniest lighthearted humor, and who can still hit you in the feels with scenes like the Marco's vision
I'm convinced that one of the greatest cuts of all time is when Gina says "Oh Porco, how will we ever break that curse on you" and Porco responds right before Curtis' engine starts up with "Face it Gina" *booom* "I'm a pig".
Man I loooooved this movie. I only saw it last month. The way that he animates the light glancing off of the sea, the sky and the planes. This is a gorgeous movie all the way through.
Just to give you a reason to rewatch the movie again: It has a hidden ending, that I have yet to see anyone talk about. Porco overcomes himself and his memories to become a human again and returns to Gina. Pay close attention to the hints given in the last minutes of the movie.
@@ripzmad9846 at the end of the film you'll see Porco's red seaplane parked by the hotel garden during daytime, and another scene Gina is not sitting in the garden, hinting that she won the "bet", he finally visits her during the day and she's no longer waiting for him. I also think that the pig appearance is just how he sees himself in his mind because of all the self loathing and guilt, being the only survivor during the war battle and all of his friends were gone, and his general view on humanity.
I love how Marco is a bounty hunter but he doesn’t actually kill. The pirate mentioned it when Curtis and Marco was fighting for the bet he said “the pig is not a killer”. Marco had a perfect opportunity to shoot but he didn’t. This idea is also seen even at the beginning of the film, he doesn’t kill the pirates instead he stops them in his own way. This also gives me an idea thats since he’s experienced war and seeing his friends die I think he doesn’t want to see much of that anymore. That’s why he doesn’t kill, he doesn’t want to see people die anymore. I think everyone even the pirates even if they don’t admit, they see him as a good guy.. everyone sees this except him. Love this film I had to watch it again just to remember the story. It’s such a light hearted and sad movie at the same time.
today i finally got around to watching Porco Rosso. immediately takes first place as my favorite ghibli film. delightful, poignant, funny, and i just adore the trio obaachans. i didn't even try the michael keaton dub! gotta go for another round.
it's been three years since this video was posted, but porco rosso's french dub is just amazing, and i cannot imagine Marco having an other voice ever since

Thank you Stevem for this wonderful video. You do this movie justice and make me want to watch it again and again.
Definitely my favorite. The atmosphere in this like no other.
Porco Rosso is one of my all-time favourite films so I thank you for taking up this fantastic film! you earned a sub.
Oh you will not believe how excited i was to see that you love this movie as much as i do! I loved your points, since for me it was always quite difficult to exactly pin point down the aspects that resonated so much with me and made this movie to one of my favourites among ghibli if not in general
A marvelous piece. Shared.
appreciate all the work you put into making these videos, especially exploring something you're passionate about.
I love Porco Rosso so much. It’s so relaxing to watch; especially on a rainy day.
It's finally here and it would also be my favorite if he hadn't made many other incredible films
Well done, I’ve always loved this one. Happy to support your work on Patreon.
thank you :) Ive been trying to release this video for 3 months so it's nice to see it up finally
Great to see some in depth love for porrco rosso. This film has stuck with me the moment I watched it
Same here!
I don't know why since I've seen his other films, but I was blown away by how good Porco Rosso turned out to be.
Fantastic analysis. Subscribed.
Damn! Me too, this movie is my favorite!!!!
Ghibli's fanaticism in controlling their IP is legendary, and in the context of the theme of this movie, ironic.
I enjoyed the review, thank you.
I LOOOVE seeing fellow Porco Rosso lovers in the comments!!! I thought no one liked it. I've finally found my people!!!! My sister claims not to like it--she thinks because it's about a girl falling in love with a pig that is somehow sexist and I told her she was viewing it through an entirely incorrect lens!
she’s also a minor
This is masterpiece. Even better than his later pieces in recent years.
Beautiful, accurate, well paced and touching entonation and script. Man, your voice and the way you speak in this review is one of the best narrations I have ever enjoyed. Keep up the good work mate!
It's not my favorite movie, but that scene with the planes that will never come home joining the stream in the sky is one of the best of all time.
Thank you. Such a wonderful review. Porco Rosso is also my favorite Ghibli film.
It's so good!
been bingeing your vids the past few days, really love your work
I love it when people analyze Studio Ghibli movies.
Millennium Actress is maybe my favourite Kon movie (next video in bound)
I might well be talking about the tragedy of war soon enough
I really hope your channel reaches 1million, they way you explain and put your heart and soul into the video makes me happy, it makes me inspired to create things that can't be done in a short time but a rather happy and enjoyable time.
Thanks for that.
Great job I’m glad you were able to upload it Awesome work
Genuinely great video, the film is definitely one of my very favourites and stands in parallel, albeit jocund instead of cynical, to Disco Elysium's location in the radical pantheon of contemporary art.
"We listen the song in silence" in the French dub 😉
Something about this movie was particularly sad. It doesn't try hard to be. It just is
I know what you mean.
@@wilfredlangside7981 it’s historically accurate tho, they did a good job of portraying people from the 30s.
Well makes it sadder for me since I come from the ex Yugoslavia. And I see the message clear.
@@wilfredlangside7981 you from the states pal? I feel like you are. With that terrible take
Man I loooooved this movie. I only saw it last month. The way that he animates the light glancing off of the sea, the sky and the planes. This is a gorgeous movie all the way through.
I see why this is your favorite Miyazaki movie, cause it's definitely one of mine!
This movie is cool af
Just watch this for the first time last month...it's REALLY good! My favorite Miyazaki film so far by far!
Porco Rosso is a film with no bad guys ...even the pirates are lovable
Thank you for persevering so hard to make this. It's def one of your best! Cheers.
Hopefully it will stay up
Just to give you a reason to rewatch the movie again: It has a hidden ending, that I have yet to see anyone talk about. Porco overcomes himself and his memories to become a human again and returns to Gina. Pay close attention to the hints given in the last minutes of the movie.
Please elaborate
Glad it made it to an audience Steve.
me too now lets hope it stays up
this video goes to my favorite's folder, thanks you for doing it
No worries
it's been three years since this video was posted, but porco rosso's french dub is just amazing, and i cannot imagine Marco having an other voice ever since
One of my favourite movies as a kid, I absolutely adored this movie and wanted to watch it every day when i got it on dvd
I positively adore this film. It’s my favorite Ghibli as well. The music is fantastic - Bygone Days makes me cry every time, I swear.
Thank you so much for this awesome critique (with references!) Great work and stamina to see it through. xoxoox
Shame on me for not being early enough to this video, Porco Rosso is my inspiration...
Amazing video. Thank you so much for it’s creation regardless of ghibli
I'm so glad this is your favorite movie! I love it too!!! It's TRAGICALLY underrated!
i am from Bosnia love your channel
Thank you humbly for bothering I found it very informative cheers
I like that you included pictures with Miyazaki's and Yoichi Kotabe's research trip to Switzerland at 10:34.
Great video and editing
Great production !
This such a good review / video. I learned a ton!
I do love this film. I love how even the pirates are more goofy galoots trying to get by than cold-blooded killers.
