    It’s nice to see how face makeup wears on skin with acne/texture because that’s more realistic for the majority of people. So thanks for that.

    I just wanted to say that before I discovered your channel a couple years back, I was that girl who piled on a super full coverage foundation because I was ashamed of my acne. Watching your videos and seeing you use these beautiful, sheer, dewy foundations despite skin troubles made me do the same, and my confidence in my skin has changed dramatically. I've always struggled with acne so I completely relate to your feelings of frustrations, but I just wanted to thank you for helping me find confidence in my skin and providing some KILLER foundation recommendations along the way.

    Girl when you said you’re not going on accutane my heart did a little dance. I did it, for 6 months. My vision has decreased to the point where I went from -0.50 in each eye to about -2.5 in each eye in less than a year. My joints have never been the same and I went from a genuinely happy person to being suicidal every day. My skin is so dry and sensitive I literally can’t even wear makeup. Accutane FUCKED up my life. I would trade my life now for my life pre-accutane. You probably won’t ever read this but it just made me so happy when you said you would never do it 🥰🥰❤️

He always looks at me like I’m amazing, and whenever I bring up being upset about a breakout he listens and then just says “he never would have noticed bc I look great” every time. I used something like acutane because I nearly lost my eyesight because my cystic acne started being on my eyelids. Yeah and my eyes swole completely shut. Everyone has to decide for themselves but my sight was more important to me than other parts of my health.

    • @mominamahmood7610
      @mominamahmood7610 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      omg that's crazy!! I also went on accutane (not for the same reason, my acne was never on my eyelids) because i was sick of dealing with it and i felt like the dry skin/hair/lips were worth it in the short term for clear skin. ofc this decision is different for everyone, it also didn't get rid of my acne completely which was a total bummer after all the shit you go through while on it

    • @raneemfathy2581

      Hope you’re better now 💕

    • @genevieveve
      @genevieveve 4 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      I went on accutane too because I felt like the constant inflammation of my acne was making me ill, it seemed to be affecting my immune system. Also, deep and painful cysts made it painful for me to sleep on either side of my face.
      Everybody has to decide for themselves, but it is the best decision for some people. For me, the side effects were well worth the results.

    • @amybensky3336
      @amybensky3336 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I’m on acutane for a second time and for me it’s worth it. My acne led to many mental health issues and I hated how I looked. As painful as the acutane is I’d rather go through the short time pain than have the acne make me feel like shot about myself

  • @carajeankeeler

    I went thru the pain and dry with retinol, took about a month or so, but now my pimples are drastically better! There are ways to help the “retinization” process. Like 3 days off in between, or putting moisturizer on first, then retinol. It does go away after awhile. You just have to be patient

  • @mcsuzzer

    Accutane was so brutal. I can totally understand why you wouldn’t want to. It changed my life and trust; forever grateful. But for 4 months my face was a absolute mess, my skin everywhere was dry, I had to wear long sleeves and pants all summer etc.

    Retinol takes a good 3-4 months to fully work on all layers of your skin...when I started mine, I also started at the end of spring (4 years ago) and suffered all summer through dry, peeling,sensitive, purging skin...but literally at the 4 month mark...it just started to clear up!! I couldn’t believe it! Although I still suffer through hormonal acne here and there, I’ve been fairly clear ever since. I also am so used to the retinol, it doesn’t irritate my skin much anymore (I use only twice a week now). Good luck!!

    Hey Sam, my skin struggles have been very similar to yours. From the age of 16-19, I dealt with persistent acne all over my face until I went on accutane, which I found helped pretty significantly. The worst side effect I dealt with was dry flaky lips (thank goodness). Luckily no depression, sore joints or other unpleasant side effects. I just wanted to share my anecdotal experience if ever you do decide to take that route, but that is completely up to you. I have plenty of left over acne scars (I'm 26 now), which I have embraced and is something that we both have to show for our skin struggles! From watching you over time, I see you've developed a healthy relationship with your skin, acne and all. At times it can feel frustrating and hopeless, but in the end, your acne is not how I or others remember you. You're hilarious and a bad ass chick. For what it's worth, I personally believe your acne adds to your beauty. Well, thanks for listening to my Ted Talk, and I spied that awesome little pastel East Van painting on your shelf. I'm from the lower mainland, so if I ever see you traversing downtown, I'll say hi! 💕

    I have suffered with terrible acne for years and year (I’m 38 and this has been going on since I was about 20/21). I’ve tried everything, I had medication for it, nothing made it go away completely. But during lockdown when I’ve been at home for weeks (I’m in the U.K., literally everything has been shut for months) I decide to make sure I drank LOTS of water as I’ve always been bad at getting plenty of fluids. My skin has improved dramatically and I obviously just didn’t realise how dehydrated I was. I honestly can’t believe it. I’ve always used excellent skin care and have good skin apart from the areas where breakouts happen (mainly my right cheek and jawline) but what a difference the water has made. I’m not drink maybe about 2.5 litres per day. If you think you’ve tried everything, try looking at your water intake. Even if you drink plenty, try taking more each day.

    Hey Sam! I’m not sure what you guys have over in Canada in terms of acne products but a highly popular one in Northern Europe is Lymecycline and tetracycline (two derivatives). These are antibiotics that tackle bacteria in the skin that causes acne. I have noticed that is the US and Canada I hear a lot about accutane and roaccutane and a lot of people complaining about other health issues. I personally and my brother as well have been on courses of lymecycline (usually 6months) and I have seen results in my skin as early as one month into the treatment. I would highly highly recommend it if you want a treatment that is less severe and has less side effects. Similarly to accutane, it is recommended you don’t spend long periods in the sun while on the antibiotic. It absolutely changed the way I saw myself and the positive effects lasted far beyond the period I was taking it. Hope you read this ! Lots of love from Ireland x

    I'm so glad your partner is so supportive with your acne, whether it helps you or not - I never believe mine when he says it 😂
    I know you said you're not feeling Accutane, but it truly changed my life and the side effects are manageable once you're in a routine.

    i have never felt more seen than when you were talking about your acne and treatment plans you're willing/not willing to try! I've heard so many mixed reviews about accutane but mainly that it is very intense, so i too am just not willing to take that step. i recently tried (and still am) a retinol for the first time in my life (I'm 21, i've had constant breakouts over the past 4-5 years that don't seem to stop) and had some scaring, but again i had heard so many mixed reviews about retinols and i was terrified of having to go through a potential horrifying purge period which would just make me feel even worse, but decided quarantine would probably be the best time for me to try it if that did happen, and so far i haven't had much purging, just two or three semi-painful cystic acne that is no worse than what i was experiencing before using it, so i'm just hoping that will eventually stop, but apart from that i've noticed such an amazing difference with my skin and how quickly my acne heals and lightens. It works so differently with every single person, so i hope you are seeing or starting to see some good results and that it's not impacting you too much. Honestly Sam you're the only beauty influencer that has made me feel understood about my acne journey as i feel we're on very similar paths with it, so thanks for always being so candid about it, because for me personally acne has messed up my self-esteem for the longest time and you make me feel okay about it. hope you're well, ilysm and i love the podcast so much xxx

    Damn Sam, I struggle with acne too. My whole life and I’m so used to it. I have really good days and then BAM, pimple city. I feel you and you have the right attitude about it. Taking it day by day is the best way to cope and look forward to those days where it looks a little better. I appreciate you showing your real skin, makes you so much more relatable for those who do have skin issues versus this beauty guru skin. I would love that but on most days that’s just not me. Thanks for being your truest self for us.

    I’ve been taking pantothenic acid (a form of vitamin b5) and I’ve been superdosing for about two weeks now and I feel like it’s been helping my skin a lot, I’ve also suffered from severe cystic acne for a while now, I just like taking vitamins and eating a plant based diet and it’s helped :)

    I’m glad you’re not down with accutane. I had major side effects and eventually had to stop and I think it’s caused health problems for me and the same goes for my sister-in-law. And it didn’t work for me. I think it helps some people but others have acne for different reasons and they have to try to figure it out themselves. I think you look beautiful Sam 😘😘

    retinol tip.. start using it every 3rd night.. then build up to every other, and then every night. this will make the process much more comfortable. Your skin will build a tolerance to it and it won’t be painful and hardly peel. it’s all worth it in the end! btw, I work in a medical spa as an esthetician and know a lot about retinol

    Hey, just wanted to say I totally get you. My skin is pretty shit with acne, but as much as I hate my skin, I don't think the alternative is any better. I'm not willing to go through the harsher treatments like acutane and stuff like that and have to change my whole lifestyle because of it. I'd rather just live with the acne at the moment. I feel u. That's all.

    I was on Accutane many years ago and the side effects were hardly noticeable. The experience is different for everyone so we each have to make the right decision for ourselves. Sam has a great perspective on what she can deal with and what she can’t.

    Retinol is one of my favourite skincare ingredients! If you're skin is super irritated by retinol it's possible you're using too strong of a %. It's really an ingredient you need to build up a tolerance too and go slow with. I started out with a 0.5% once a week and increased frequency every 3 weeks. Once I'm 3/4 though my bottle then I'll up the strength. I've experienced slight purging but no peeling or irritation. Good luck with your skin journey!

    That milani foundation is my absolute fave. It mixes really well with moisturizer and oils to sheer it out and looks great over my texture and just stays all day. If they ever discontinue it I’ll cry. Also it’s the only foundation I’ve found that has shades that match my olive undertone.

    Hey Sam, firstly can I say how great I think you are as you are! :) Even with your struggles you appeal to me more and I’d rather watch your videos in spite of the acne etc etc. In a way it makes you more real and beautiful. Anyway, with regards to the accutane I know you said a deal breaker is the side effects, they only really manifest if you start at high doses and don’t step up from the low doses to a medium-higher dose. Also, for the retinol cream, I don’t have sensitive skin and all skin types are individual but typically you shouldn’t feel any burning or pain or major dryness. If you do it’s usually a sign that your skin needs you to cut back to the previous effective dose/amount until it builds more of a tolerance. I in no way hope to try tell you what to do, just thought I’d speak up and throw my two cents.
