That's a pretty good overview of the ups and downs of sponsorship. It's worth noting that there are different kinds of sponsorships. I'm not a Sponsored Pilot. But I am a community rep and beta tester for a particular radio brand. Yeah, I get discounts when I order direct and some free stuff. I also buy a lot of stuff from that brand, much of it at full retail. (I need a receiver or sensor? I will usually just go to my local retailer and buy one, I'll leverage my contacts if I'm making a larger purchase like a radio, or a set of high-end servos). One thing I don't do is pass off my promo videos as gear reviews. I do try and focus on the educational side (here's what it does and how to use it) over pure advertising, but I don't claim to be a reviewer when I'm getting sponsored kit. Of course in my case I have the relationship because of my track record as an expert and educator online, not because I'm popular on YT or am a killer pilot. There's different paths to sponsorship and they have different tradeoffs once you are sponsored.
I work for a few Hobby companies and each one has different rules, Some will say that you can't use others' products in a review video so if you fly a brand A plane you should use Brand A radios and Batteries and so own others will just say we need a build or unboxing video and a link to the product or hashtag and or a shoutout using @ you cant talk about pricing or stock levels basic stuff

It's a shame, I feel like they changed a lot over the last few years. Low key hobbyists just out there for fun, but then they tried too hard to make a business out of it. My sense is that now it's lots a clickbait videos of cheap stuff they hope you'll use the referral link on. I still subscribe, but haven't clicked on their videos in months.

Brian used to make many videos about modding all the planes he bought because none of them come out perfect out of the box. He stopped doing that when he got the planes for free because he doesn't want to showcase the flaws of a brand new product. His channel is now very very different from when I originally subscribed. Instead of a real reviews with pointing out flaws and fixing them, the vids just become super long infomercials not worth watching beyond a (fake?) maiden flight. When RC shillers have to reassure the audience that a flight is a "true" maiden because you constantly misused the term in the past you know that whatever they say is NOT TRUSTWORTHY.
@@toolbaggers well honestly he stopped doing most mods because he doesnt have the time. He's always half a dozen planes behind, and then he has to edit 2 or 3 LONG videos on top of the flying. I have no clue where he finds the time. He has a bunch of kids all in the after-school activity ages! Its a miracle he does what he does. I used to love his mods. He must have molested his Moa and Conscendos a dozen times at least. And yes, I know Megan does most of the heavy lifting!
I love this video, so true in almost every way. Sponsorship isn't what it's cracked up to be, everyone BELIEVES sponsorship is about getting planes for free and flying hard and low. Glad I broke free from those companies before it all went south.

Patreon. He has said before. I've noticed he doesn't do many bind and fly drone reviews anymore. He is usually kind in the beginning, and then gets overly critical at the end of reviews. I'm thankful that he is thorough in his reviews. But i think its lead to not many companies giving him products to review lately. Which he has stated on live streams.
Well said! I honestly have always felt your reviews sponsored or not were always very honest. Unfortunately the sponsors don’t always appreciate that. Seems odd though that said sponsors offer V2 of many planes or cars with improvements to shortcomings mentioned in honest reviews. I truly enjoy the sarcasm and wit of your videos. You bring up a good point about how people may not trust all the way due to the sponsorship. This affects anyone’s perception and will most likely show up during a comparison video where the sponsored brand just edges our over the competitors.

becoming sponsored in RC to me seems to be the same thing as becoming someone who earns money by playing video games (streaming, e-sports...): it ruins the hobby, at least for me. can't imagine having to make a video or something all the time because they sent me a plane or other piece of tech
Some of the best memories and friends I’ve made in the hobby have been through sponsorships. It’s been really rewarding for me. But, lots of other people have different motivations, and it’s not for everybody.
@@cwojcik_rc well, i can see how a one-time-deal every now and then could be fun but having to restrict yourself all the time, even when doing those one-time-deals since you probably want more of them in the future, thinking about what to say instead of just saying what one thinks... seems tiring ^^ i see it when i feel like streaming games. it puts a pressure on that just isn't necessary to enjoy the hobby.

No. 4 is INCREDIBLY true. Basically someone taking up a sponsorship is putting their own reputation on the line. Personally, I want to hear UNbiased opinions from actual hobbyists, not sponsored shills who will almost never point out the problems with a product, that or minimize them to the point of questioning the ethics involved. There are exceptions of course, people like Michael Wargo who have built up enough credibility from being an outstanding pilot that I would be willing to take them at their word. Unfortunately there are also a lot of hack pilots AND companies who should be selling used cars for how believable they are... like a certain well-sponsored and well-known R/C channel that does crap like actually pushing an F-15 AS A BEGINNER airplane!!! Talk about irresponsible! Combine that with a few other bad habits like talking down to his wife, talking down to his audience, and you get the idea.
Sponsoring R/C pilots is the worst thing that has ever happened to R/C, and has destroyed the hobby. Sponsored pilots don't make squat, despite what they tell you. They have also completely ended R/C contests which used to be huge and wonderful events. Now, any "contest" is simply a showcase of company's products by their sponsored pilots competing against each other.
