I find in winter that dry skin from the low humidity can break open fairly spontaneously when you move your hand a certain way, like gripping a steering wheel or shifter.
Set the TPS voltage at .42 and the IAC counts to around 25 or less (both readings go hand in hand so adjust one then adjust the other until they're both in spec) and a scanmaster or powerlogger would be helpful in the future. Nice project! It's come a long way. 10.8 at WOT is a good AFR btw.
I was just thinking man this is a labor of love, and then thought about how all of your work comes across as a labor of love. Thanks for having some happy content on an otherwise grey day.
I am not really a car guy, more a motorcycle person. I also don't like cleaning and detailing myself. But Alex shows his love for what he does, and that is contagious. That is why I come here. To see his joy and love for what he does. That, and Peter ;-)
Your car your choice. But FYI disk breaks weigh almost 3 times what drums do and you will need to include proportioning valves to keep the car from getting weird and sliding in the rain
Platelets help the blood clot to stop bleeding. if you've taken a lot of aspirin or IB you might have thinned your blood to keep it from clotting as fast.
Love this car - you absolutely SCORED when you bought this one. I fell in love with this car back when I was competing with car stereos in the early 90's and Richard Clark's Buick was dominating the pro class. Loved these cars ever since!
@@johnhumphreys9732 Wow! I never got to see the car in person. But I bought or "previewed" every magazine that featured his car at the local grocery store! :) Unfortunately, pictures just don't do everything justice. I heard that car's sound quality was near perfect.
When I was a senior in high school my dad worked in the development department at GM in Flint, MI and he brought a Grand National home for me to drive around for the weekend. That thing was stupid fast for the late 80's (and compared to my '77 Chevette). He also brought an '87 Corvette home one weekend. Good times back then!!!
I missed a bit of info in my previous comment. Back in 1986 or 1987 I had the privilege of driving a new Grand National that was owned by a mutual friend of my best friend. That was an awesome experience. You didn't have to accelerate much at all before the rear tires just wanted to spin. Looking back, it's a wonder the owner left a teenager (me) drive such a great car. I'm 53 now and I wish I had the opportunity to drive that car again. I'm interested in watching this one get transformed. Thanks.
Started watching you years ago and I am so glad your channel kept growing. Peter is a great addition as well 👏. Man that grand national brings back good memories. That was my dream car going up. I remember going to see it at my local Pontiac/Buick dealership and just staring at it. Back then they were asking 28 000$ Canadian for one. I remember thinking that was crazy. But it would have been a great investment.
I had idle issues with my ‘91 ZR-1, which appears to have the same TPS, and like TS said, you need to put a voltmeter to it and adjust it that way. I found the voltage value in my service manual which was set at .54 V with key on engine off. Not sure if GN is the same.
I LOVE this video series!!! ****When you do the Front Brake Upgrade, if you're going the budget route that is, maybe look into the Blazer Brake swap. It utilizes the 2WD Chevy Blazer Knuckle with sealed bearings as well as the much larger dual piston calipers and it is DIRECT BOLT IN. All the components, aside from knuckles, can be had right off Rock Auto down to the bolts. 👍👍👍 I performed this in an evening on my protouring 1987 Monte Carlo SS.
My uncle used to make Mark Jackson intercoolers for Grand Nationals. He was like the Buick Whisperer. There is nothing he can't do to those cars. His street driven GN was the fastest street car I've every driven and it looked bone stock. These cars have always held a place in my heart cause of being in elementary school and getting to ride in one all the time at grandma and grandpa's.
Flat thumb tacs always work as a temporary and quick fix for that annoying/drooping headliner, but it will leave permanent holes in the fabric if you plan on fixing and reusing it.
You can probably use a small socket to press on that little star shaped retainer. Puts even pressure all around, too Edit: sprinkle sugar on your cut. It'll stop the bleeding and clot
Painting the frame rails is something I would do. Doesn't need much skill or money and makes a big difference in the looks of the vehicle. Done it several times on pickups.
Hi Fellas, This project means allot to me, I've followed it from your purchase, because I'm running a 2003 3800sc out of a Bonneville SSei, which is one of the up-graded 3.8's from the Grand National engine, rated at 240hp but closer to 250hp. I've put a 3.4" SC pulley and cooler plugs, and she is putting out around 300+hp in my "86 Fiero GT, a 2700-lb award wining custom sports car. I've up-graded the suspension, and call her my "quasi super car!" She is an auto-cross demon, and tons of fun on winding mountain roads...! I would love to have a Grand National, so I'll be following along with your restoration vicariously, just so you know. I am an 80-year old gear head, so this is from my generation. I have built many custom and hot-rod cars in the late 60's and early to mid 70's. I love and honor what your are doing with your Grand National, and what you are doing to restore her to her former glory, and even better. Thank you so much!
You literally have like 3 or 4 of my dream cars. Love the channel on how its all things we can do at home and not all ridiculously expensive. On the GN build you should please do a b4 & after dyno test.
I had an'87 and when you have full boost these are so much fun. Easily do huge burnouts and when it hits 2nd gear my tires broke loose as well.hadto be real careful in rain or the rear would slide outfrom behind very quickly

High idling could for so many different things. When my is200 was idling high, I got so frustrated because I was losing a lot of gas as well until once day (after being inspired by Alex and Peter), I bought some tools and worked on my own car. three of my six spark plugs were totaled and there wasn't any combustion in three of the chambers so when I replaced them with some brand-new iridium high performance spark plugs, the idle just got so smooth I could've melted and I'm literally going over two (2) weeks on tank of gas. You help me figure things out all the time guys, Love your content.
The license plates are from 1976. They were the bicentennial plates. Note the 4 stars, which were for the 4 different countries that parts of Michigan were part of during its history. Very cool plates
When these cars first came out my neighbor ordered one a grand national. After he took delivery of the car, he swapped out the instrument cluster for a factory looking cluster but the speedo went up to either 120 or 140 mph, he changed the chip as well, allowing the car to go that fast!! He only drove it in the summer, not his daily driver. After Buick stopped making these he sold it for more than he paid for it!!!
This is going to be a very nice restoration, definitely can't wait for the rest. Keep it up boss, great job. The head liner cracks me up though at the end sitting on your head
I owned for 22 years. My friend called his Grand Nasty. Stock boost is 13. Check drivers side exhaust manifold for crack between middle and last cylinder if it is the original. I used a stock aftermarket one from Kirban Performance. You can hear it when engine is cold. Even if it's small, it will make a big difference. The is a black connector and a green one hanging out of the wiring harness on the drivers side. Green is a tach and the black is a fuel pump test port. We would remove Schrader valve from fuel rail, put a hose on it and connect power from back of alternator to the black connector and drain fuel at the track and put in 116. Then do the same to remove the 116. It voltage light bulb on dash burns out, you alternator won't charge. Battery must be in good condition. Ecm needs a good voltage. You car is an 86, I seen the aluminum bumper during the fuel tank drop. The real bumper behind the bumper cover. 87's had steel.
That intercooler says Duttweiler on it.. Back in the day when almost nobody had aftermarket stuff for GNs Kenny Duttweiler was the man! I'd bet there's more of his stuff in that car than just that intercooler.
Man I love this channel! The crew is amazing. The cars are such awesome "vintage" from my childhood. The work is done right with quality parts. Thanks Alex and crew!
My 87 GN was the same way with the fuel system. And #5 exhaust lobe was wiped clean off at 39,000 miles. It sat in a field for 20 years and had a .22 bullet stuck in the passenger rear quarter. Funnest car i owned. It was an astro roof car as well.

I think that harsh down shift you feel is result of only having 4 gears. If the car had a about 2 more gears the car would be amazing. Mine has 500hp and 600tq with stock internals slightly bigger turbo, 2.5 pypes exhaust, 3 inch down pipe, stock intercooler, new fuel lines, brake lines, alky razor kit, new fuel pump, sending unit, new body mounts including the missing mounts that the gnx had stiffens the body with these placed. Once you do you upgrades you will never say it's fast for its time. The engine is a beast. Mine build is slightly better than stock. 11.5 capable on 93 octane and methonal. My performance is close to a stock camaro zl1. Also Temps 40 degrees and below gives you anywhere from 25 to 40 extra hp. I have had scat packs challenge. I let them get a car length on me and then I qive it quater throttle and I'm past them. Put on some mickey thompson slicks and it grips with the low end torque.
Think about Cerakote instead of powder. Higher temp tolerance and better abrasion resistance. You can get it tons of colors including a factory looking silver. I would do all brackets, pulley's, and small attachments black (kinda like the EGR cover) then the valve covers, intake manifold, even the turbo housing factory silver to give it the high contrast look.

Had an 86 with T-tops and it was a blast to own one! So cool to see you found one and are having fun with it 👍 if it suddenly looses power always check your plumbing on the intake and intercooler.. they sometimes come apart under the pressure if you beat on it.. you should be seeing 18-21 psi on the boost.. bury that gas pedal in the floor! 😁

Heres the Answer to your question about Blood . "Proteins in your blood called fibrins work with small blood cell fragments called platelets, to form the clot. This is called coagulation, a process that helps the body when an injury occurs because it slows blood loss." "Now you know, and knowing is Half the Battle" -- G.I. Joe
Love hearing that high volume of air jetting out the exhaust on boosted cars. Nothing cooler than the GN, especially watching an old GNX wrinkle slicks and lift the fronts at the track.
I always wanted a GN. I had two regals in school (an 84 and an 85). Later, I had an 88 SS Monte Carlo. The GN was way faster than the SS. I always wondered why Chevy never did a boosted SS to be competitive with the GN. Anyway, you found a great car and a great foundation to build on. I can't wait to see how it turns out.
I will tell you, perhaps my boost gauge in the instrument cluster was inaccurate, but i would routinely peg the red boost to the max at 15-17 pounds. Mine was all stock, I do believe. Bought in 1997 from Kasch Fine Cars on 79th in Bedford Park. I did notice the bit of rubber on the rear quarters from doing burnouts. Fabulous cars. My pushrods seals in the back cylinders were old and so i learned to do spark plugs (a full set) in 20 minutes.
It would take an afternoon to update your headliner. I’ve done it with no experience. Super simple. Spray adhesive with some new headliner material, and boom. Done. No more droopy roof.
To help you in the future get your hands on Brown butcher's paper. The paper has a chemical that is used in the making of the paper that you can put on your to quickly help your blood coagulate to stop the bleeding. It will not harm you. But you need to not pull the paper off the wound or you will open it bag up. Let it dry out and fall off on its own. (Actually Brown paper bags are made the same way so find a fairly clean bag to set aside for emergencies. My father who was an Electrical Engineer and worked outside some times would make sure he had brown paper near where he could grab it quickly. He used this technique to stop the blood flow from cuts all his life and taught it to me. (I am 73.) ( When he would cut himself shaving with a blade you would see little patches of brown paper all over his face. Safer then Kleenex because you could give yourself an infection with Kleenex.)
Regarding the little clip on the filter sock. I would have thought a 6mm socket would have just pushed over the top of that. Nice and simple with no messing around with the sidecutters.
DEAR MR 2 LEGIT 2 QUIT!!!!! I personally want to thank you for rescuing this Grand National. The previous owner was not into it at all from what I could see and these are a huge part of American Automotive History. Also when you put the smack to this car I will be ready to see you line it up with the turbo Pontiac that you have thanks man we love you!!!
21:50 It's a Precision turbo, which is a modified Garrett - they cast their own exhaust housings. The compressor is larger than stock - the original had a bolt-on adapter that married the 3" hose to the smaller compressor inlet. And that looks like a Terry Houston downpipe.
Blood: platelets make it coagulate, and back in the day there were styptic pencils to stop bleeding when you cut yourself shaving. I get bad hangnails (dry cuticle ends) that will bleed when messed with too much. Great to see & hear the classic Grand National, glad you found this one!
13psi of boost is about stock so it’s a bit low on boost check the computer and see if it has a turbo tweak chip and what boost range it’s set to and you can adjust the wastegate to that
This has been a dream car of mine for years. So cool to see you bringing this back to the streets. I have an 04 buick lesabre yea I know lame but it has 76,000 miles on it. 3800 v6 and I'd love to throw a turbo on the and just run 8-10 psi just to make it alittle more fun. It's a back n forth to work car so I haven't decided yet haha. And gets 30mpg.
Back in the day, I helped my brother-inlaw build up his 86' GN. You commented on the shifting was not right. The designers that made the transmission did crazy cool things like you can with the adjustment at the throttle, pull a clip. Move the cable in or out and can change the shifting from smooth for grama to chirping 3rd gear. But the tran was the weak link so you have to put in the full blown HP kit replacing almost everything to make those trani's survive. Back then we made massive power out of his. Not like my 1,100hp R32 GT-R but pretty good for a grocery getter car. With technology what it is today. Replace the ECU. We had to re-chip the old one. Even after that, it prevented it from making more HP.
Great to see the Buick running well. If I were restoring it the valve covers and intake would stay factory. Every thing else would be powder coated in black. On a car that cool you need some bling.
Love the grand national. Wish I had one. My father handed down to me a 79 Buick regal limited as my first car and drove it till it couldn't any more. Wish the best of luck to you. And can't wait to see more to what you do to it.
Old, cold tires on January Chicago streets... plus 10 lbs of boost is bound to lead to goofiness when you press the go-pedal. Thinking the messed up air hose and the sketchy MAF may be causing some mischief.
Hey guys, speaking of keeping an eye on the tps voltage, I used to hang out with a guy that had an 87 grand national it had about the same amount of work done under the hood as well, he got a digital readout called a scanmaster to keep an eye on items like that, it was pretty easy to put in, it hooked right up into the obd port if I remember right, and it helped us do quick adjustments on the fly while we were out and about. Just thought I would throw out an idea to yall that might help.
At around 26:00 on those star shaped clips, I've always found that using a nutdriver or socket on an extension that's bigger than the shaft, but smaller than the outside of the clip works pretty well. I've also stuck a small magnet to the tool to keep the clip from falling when it was in a tight area.
You have to do something with that chrome strip on the grill. Maybe install a grill from and 87 GN on it. If it doesn't fit, maybe black out the strip? It will look soooooo much better.

I didn't even make it to 2:00 when I had to cut it off after that on-the-fly ''TPS repair''.
@@earlbrown Yeah, me too.. I was like what the Fook. Put a volt meter on it man ....lol I guess I'm just pissed I don't have a GN.
I remember his car being at a Circuit City competition in Tennessee, one of my 1st shows I attended it was beautiful!
@@johnhumphreys9732 Wow! I never got to see the car in person. But I bought or "previewed" every magazine that featured his car at the local grocery store! :)
Unfortunately, pictures just don't do everything justice.
Love the GN. I have a Typhoon and it runs 22 psi on E85 and 18 psi on Premium. That car is going to be fun with 15 to 20 psi.
Alex, adjust that TPS soon or you can mess up that engine fast. Once you mess with those throttle set screws you need to check your volts on that TPS.
Cool. I'm very interested in watching the brake upgrade. I don't generally think any vehicle has good enough brakes straight from the factory.
I love the faith he has in the cars he loves. Truly a car guy through and through
You can probably use a small socket to press on that little star shaped retainer. Puts even pressure all around, too
Edit: sprinkle sugar on your cut. It'll stop the bleeding and clot
nice wound lifehack. my mom used to sprinkle cinnamon for the same coagulating effect, but it left a darkened scar. Sugar seems like a better solution
Socket driver works great
@@hhjhj393 alum works best
Awesome 😎 timing on the dismantle... replace fuel pump.... entire unit...you won't regret it...😎 Great video... I like factory.... too nice to Change... love Olives...and almonds.... both great for you... Name her Resurrection.....
You guys are just having too much fun. Enjoyed the video immensely
Love the GN!
It would have been funny to see Peter hanging out in the median filming those fly-bys… 😆
You should look into dry ice blasting for the underside and engine. It does a remarkable job of cleaning
Hey Alex and Peter, I had an 84 T-Type triple blue denim color. I loved that car and I'm really enjoying this content. Cheers!
Your white blood cells i gotchu
You and Peter make a great team. It's as if you have known each other your whole lives.
Use a small socket to put the fuel filter lock washers on! Works slick!!!
That's what I use, they can be a BITCH to put on, I've had a few fly off some where.
@@NoWr2Run Yup!! They're built for bouncing and rolling 🤣😂🤣
One of the best body design ever done! A timeless classic. Congrats!
PLATELETS! I'd keep the engine as stock as possible..keep the silver bits silver keep the black bits black.
Man I love this channel! The crew is amazing. The cars are such awesome "vintage" from my childhood. The work is done right with quality parts. Thanks Alex and crew!
I think this is my new favorite car that you've had on the channel! So cool and glad you plan to restore it as much as possible
My 87 GN was the same way with the fuel system. And #5 exhaust lobe was wiped clean off at 39,000 miles. It sat in a field for 20 years and had a .22 bullet stuck in the passenger rear quarter. Funnest car i owned. It was an astro roof car as well.
Best automotive channel on the TH-cams and definitely the best DUO in all of TH-cam.
Shout out to Alex and Peter for the content and being genuinely good blokes. Really eased the time of dealing with my old man’s passing, he’s name was Alex as well. Lsc 2023🍻
Thanks, Condolences…. Think I know what you mean, etc.
Peter is such a great addition to the channel. You two are hilarious.
Absolutely love these mid week videos. Feels like a bonus!! Great job guys. You too Max!!!
LOL, love the quick cut edit right after saying this 26:35. They aren't super fun to get in when the sock faces completely opposite of the fuel float.
Enjoy watching you two do your magic , what a find! The car is a jewel already, and once you finish the restore the car will be show ready. Thanks for the view of having your fun, gives you a good feeling.
Dammit Alex I was looking for this video on Saturday 😂
Super Super Amazing Job!, It runs and Looks A Million times better! God Bless you, Alex and Peter! You guys are the best, LegitStreetCars is Number 1 for me!!❤👨🏻🔧
Thanks, Fellas. This was great! I love seeing old stuff getting restored and not winding up getting crushed in a junkyard.
Smoke em if you got em.And You definitely got em. Good job you two putting it back together
Great job to the whole team! My favourite car channel hands down!
Alex, we’ve heard your story on how you got into cars. When will we hear Peter’s and Max’s story?
❤Peter and the chemistry between you two. Bring on the complete restoration. 🎉
Always a good day when when LSC posts!
Love the grand national videos!!!!!❤
Think about Cerakote instead of powder. Higher temp tolerance and better abrasion resistance. You can get it tons of colors including a factory looking silver. I would do all brackets, pulley's, and small attachments black (kinda like the EGR cover) then the valve covers, intake manifold, even the turbo housing factory silver to give it the high contrast look.
Cerakote is awesome but boy howdy you're talking big $$$$.
They make a Plastic snap on your Spray can Fan Head with Trigger and Handle that works with all spray paint and primer spray cans.
It enables you to use the Spray Can and Attachment like a Real Paint Gun. No hand and finger fatigue and a more even fan/spray of paint or primer. Just a Tip for you. Works wonders with Spray Cans... Nice car btw...
*I helped restore an already immaculate factory 1987 Grand National " GNX " in 1990. We got to keep it at our 6 bay shop plus paint room for 6 months as the Commercial Airline Pilot owner had collected 10 muscle cars ( GNX was 11th) and told us we could drive it home rather than leave it in Parking lot when all bays were full. ( To avoid theft or vandalism of GNX )

Alot of people have never dealt with a gm v6. They make noises. My 3.1L v6 was the same. And they are the same engines just displacement different. That thing had 320,000 miles on it when I traded it in. And it always had Loud lifters
I've genuinely never looked forward to anybody video drops than yours Alex, Peter and matt. Love it from Belmont an Harlem Ave !!!!
What about. Black Betty as the name. ?? 😁
On a car that cool you need some bling.
you got the sock Securing clip upside down if you hold it up parrellel it is slightly tilted bend in one direction that faces up so easy on Hard off !
