30 year Chrysler,Jeep tech here. If they kept adding oil. You may want to check the pan on the bottom of the intake. There is a paper gasket that leaks and sucks in oil under load. And yes that front crank seal is stepped. The part that sticks out is smaller in diameter than the front cover. Make sure you replace the fuel filter too. These have an external filter back by the tank.

Back in the early 2000's I was running a white Kawasaki Tecate 4 learning everything I could about engines and working 3 jobs. AmsOil Dominator was the only one that kept that Tony Kelner ported, LA Sleeved animal with a 39 mm Sudco PWK from being rebuilt way beyond my budget. I taught some people how to ride it and that always ended with injury or a good story. Gotta thank Corey Sprock for recommending it when I was picking up extra shifts just to go faster than the 'Zillas and Banshees up the hills but still be able to ride it there and home. AmsOil helped the two stroke community with a brown plug reading @ 36:1 on pump gas when no other oil companies could. Forever respect.

Great videos on this 5.9. Great engine. I had a 1978 RV built on MaxiVan w. big picture widows; it seated 9 in 3 rows -- 2f, 3middle, 4back. Carburated 360, 727tranny ran perfect. Good thing he isn't having to deal with a "97-09" dodge Durango merc engines.... those were horrible!

For those watching that don't know, the injector doesn't create the pressure that enters the cylinder but rather just release the pressure made by the fuel pump into the cylinder. That's why this DIY hack works. The spray bottle (fuel pump) is pressurizing the hose (fuel rail) and the injector is releasing the pressure.
Awesome! The 5.9 ZJ has always been a favorite of mine. I'm happy you saved this one and hopefully inspire others to save these relics as well. Loving the vids!
Great video Alex, I never really thought about the Jeep Grand Cherokee but now you got me thinking. Thanks for the tip on cleaning the fuel injectors with about $20. I'm a big fan of Seafoam it works miracles.

When left in the car while mom shopped would burn holes in the upholstery of the front seat with cigarette lighter. No seat belts circa mid to late '50s. Love to have a survivor or even restored. Love you pulling the 5.9 back from the brink.
One thing I can say about Chrysler of that era.... the Infinity sound systems were AMAZING as stock sound systems go. I miss my Aunt's Chrysler Town and Country for that reason.
The tires are late because FedEx - they used to be reliable, but that is no longer the case. They promise delivery in X days, but it never happens and they will usually blame the customer, eg. "no one home"
They have been getting more and more horrible over the last 3-4 years, but especially since the pandemic started. Shipments arriving spread out over 3-4 days, boxes looking like they were driven over by the truck. Repacked, and reboxed deliveries missing items. Don't get me started on USPS....
I had a lifted 5.9 GC. Swapped all fluids with Amsoil, put a k&n intake on it and run ethanol free gas. Even with the oversized tires it still got 18 mpg commuting and got 21 mpg on the highway.

I've always wanted a Niner, my first vehicle was a 97 ZJ with a 318. I was 17, paid a buddy of mine $150 to take me a few hours away (Hell of a friend- no way I'd do that for $150 these days.. lol), and we picked it up with his dad's trailer. I had to install a CPS, fuel pump, and spent about 3 days racking my brain trying to figure it out since I knew NOTHING about vehicle EFI at the time. If I remember right, I paid $800 for it, with around 160k miles. 4x4 Man everything I heard in this video was accurate, and I do have to give you credit for that. A lot of the newer (DIY Tutorial style) youtube mechanics tend to spew a lot of garbage that is not only useless, but sometimes harmful to the end user trying to learn. That being said, I was to give a small amount of input. Amazon offers carb-ready inline pumps for
Love the rubber tube idea!! One trick to keep things clean. Take an old tupperware clear container with a stiff lid, cut a hole just big enough for the threaded section to fit in. Catches all the fuel and lovely crap that works out of the injector too. If you were to use a glass jar(no metal lid though...), you could really see the stream well. I set up a momentary-toggle switch on a board with the 9v battery wired in along with a pair of clips for the injector connections. You can trip the switch as fast as you want or just hold it for a long spray. Pretty nice system, dirt cheap. Running fuel through the injectors in reverse also clears out the filter cups in the top if needed.
would love to see more of these resto videos where you restore it mechanicly and then cosmeticly too! just like m359 restorations just like he does with his bmws!!!
I have used AmsOil products in all my vehicles since 1977, never had a lubrication-related failure on any of them. Have been a preferred customer with them since 2001. Get this Jeep/Mopar dialed in and running! Great video!
Our first car was a 68 Valiant 4 dr. My mothers’ brother was in the Royal Canadian Navy at the time and some how we ended up with 2 gallons of battleship paint. I remember my father and I painting the car with a brush and roller with that paint. The job didn’t turn out to bad considering the method. It was my mother’s car since my father didn’t drive. Hence forth my mother was known as Battleship Betty. She took it all in stride. Nice memories for me. Thanks for the trigger on that.
I wish I new about these back when I bought my Grand Cherokee but all I knew was the durability of the 4.0L. I got the last of the 98s with the Z Package
Replacement crank seal. The Magnum's really like the normal "Performance" upgrades, but the biggest blockage/hold-up is the "Beer-Barrel" intake. It is designed just for torque and falls on it's ass after 4K RPM; an intake, better cam and tune make them really get moving
I've had like 4 of the 4 liters when I was younger. I bought an '87 with 320k miles (5spd) for $200 when I was 16 and drove it to 510k without doing anything other than a clutch , water pump and tires /brakes. Love them last one I had was an grand Cherokee I sold 10 years ago and I still see the girl driving it around. Bullet proof trucks bit not so fuel efficient lol.
I gotta hand it to Alex, his content has helped me self diagnose many things on my vehicle that i wouldnt have noticed at a simple idle. Greatly appreciate all the information that ive learned!!😊
Love it. 95 Jeep Grand Cherokee was my first car we bought from the Auction on the Southside of Chicago. Was not fast and AC and Heat would work only by the time you got to where you were going. But I loved it and I learned how to wrench on cars from that with my old man. If you ever want to get rid of it I am nearby Midway so let me know.
I got sprayed recently. I rebuilt my injectors for my 98 328i. I didn't realize there was that much pressure. Popped off once, I zip tied it after that. I got carb cleaner to the face just one time. Burns really well in the eyes..lol
His video is why i use Pennzoil Platnium ultra in my vehicles. Great oil gor a cheaper price and more readily available for me than Amsoil. #2 is ok for my shitbox.
@@davidyaroch6622 Dude watch pan the organizer or Dallas paint correction for good detailing videos. Project is cool but he’s not a detailer 😂 Turtle wax seal n shine is the most durable spray wax.

Not a Jeep guy, watched the video anyway because Alex is cool and I wanted to see him bring another vehicle back from the dead, especially on a budget! 👍👍
As a tyre (yes, tyre) fitter, I've got to say that was a dunce move putting yourself and the other road users at risk with that front rim like that! At 80kph things can go bad pretty quickly with a blow out.

Don't hesitate to tighten the steering box to factory specifications--you're already accustomed to driving cars with tight steering. Years ago, when I had a Chrysler Fifth Avenue, the shop I used was very hesitant to tighten the steering because it might "dart" so I had to do it myself. There was, of course, no problem at all.
As my shop partner would say "Dilution is the solution" (Gas bruh). What I like is the fact that thing holds the winter roads like a cats paw. Many beaters in the family but I remember the 118 mph Wood panel Oldsmobile Cutlass Wagon I just don't remember the year (yea did that on I95 on a dare). That and my pa's 66 Falcon I6 that was driven to the junkyard after being driven to the ends of the earth and back.
I'm enjoying these Alex. I especially liked the choice of location near the open electrical receptacle box for atomizing flammables :) I did this exact injector cleaning on a Jeep TJ and it worked beautifully. I do caution against holding power (even 9v) to the injector since it is built for impulse from the computer but seems to have worked well for you. Looking forward to new videos as a new subscriber.
My grandparents had a 1997 5.2 limited model with all the goodies and it was a complete disaster reliability wise, in and out of the shop every month or so. They eventually sold it at just over 100,000 miles to a friend who, after having to deal with the reliability problems themselves, blamed my grandparents for selling them a lemon even though they specifically warned them about the reliability problems. All that being said, I actually still like these things and might own one again just for some nostalgia, lol.
4:38 - When you said "I have 10 or 11 cars" my first thought was "don't move!" I don't mean you, as in don't move a muscle. I mean your family, as in don't move to another state. That may seem like an odd response, but there's a reason it came to my mind. A few years ago, my son bought a nice home in a nice suburb of San Diego. The seller had five really nice cars in addition to his and his wife's daily drivers. They were moving across the country. He hired a car carrier to load and move all of his cars. My son asked him if he was willing to say what that cost him. He said, "Yeah, it was kind of pricey. It was right around $20,000."

If I remember right, I paid $800 for it, with around 160k miles. 4x4
Man everything I heard in this video was accurate, and I do have to give you credit for that. A lot of the newer (DIY Tutorial style) youtube mechanics tend to spew a lot of garbage that is not only useless, but sometimes harmful to the end user trying to learn. That being said, I was to give a small amount of input. Amazon offers carb-ready inline pumps for
Am I crazy or did he triple his subscribers after that video with jr garage? Way to go dude!
Did he ? I thought he had 500K+
Glad to see this is going to be rescued. Keep going, Alex!
I'm in Europe probably haven't seen Jeep 5,9 ever in my life, but for some strange reason I want this to live. Seems like a really nice car.
would love to see more of these resto videos where you restore it mechanicly and then cosmeticly too! just like m359 restorations just like he does with his bmws!!!
I have used AmsOil products in all my vehicles since 1977, never had a lubrication-related failure on any of them. Have been a preferred customer with them since 2001.
Get this Jeep/Mopar dialed in and running! Great video!
The best part was the trunk cleaning, so satisfying !
I think that the drive reminded him that he needed to do that, lol
Our first car was a 68 Valiant 4 dr. My mothers’ brother was in the Royal Canadian Navy at the time and some how we ended up with 2 gallons of battleship paint. I remember my father and I painting the car with a brush and roller with that paint. The job didn’t turn out to bad considering the method. It was my mother’s car since my father didn’t drive. Hence forth my mother was known as Battleship Betty. She took it all in stride. Nice memories for me. Thanks for the trigger on that.
Personally, the sea foam stuff doesn’t really work. I’d go for BG cleaner. It’s harder to find but it works quite well.
Doesn't get much more DIY then this. Thanks for keeping it simple, and cost effective for the average person.
"82 Olds Omega. I remember the mauve interior like it was yesterday.
Instead of cleaning them, I think I would buy newer injectors with the multiple holes. Improves both fuel economy and power.
Yh but then no one eould have learned. He still has that option right?
I gotta hand it to Alex, his content has helped me self diagnose many things on my vehicle that i wouldnt have noticed at a simple idle. Greatly appreciate all the information that ive learned!!😊
Project farm tested amsoil and was shocked how well it is.
I’m gonna check that out
11:47 I totally stepped back and closed my eyes to not get carb cleaner in my eye 😂😂😂
I got sprayed recently. I rebuilt my injectors for my 98 328i. I didn't realize there was that much pressure. Popped off once, I zip tied it after that. I got carb cleaner to the face just one time. Burns really well in the eyes..lol
As a Mopar guy, I thouroughly enjoyed all aspects of this video.
Don't lie Project Farm gave us all the information we needed to know that Amsoil is #1
Absolutely love that guy , watch his vids before making a purchase
Agreed. Dude does the homework so we don’t have to. That’s why I buy the Turtle Wax Hybrid Solutions Ceramic coating.
Loving the Jeep videos my first car was a 95 Jeep Grand Cherokee 5.2l sold it with 267k miles still running like a champ I miss the thing
Ya sea foam, the jury is still out on that stuff as there has been a lot of good and bad rewiews, my youtube go to tester is the project farm guy, what you see is what you get, it did not work that well in his testing.
Haven’t seen any bad on Seafoam, just good and “it did nothing.” I guess the nothing could be bad?
Not a Jeep guy, watched the video anyway because Alex is cool and I wanted to see him bring another vehicle back from the dead, especially on a budget! 👍👍
The one thumbs down is from the person he bought the jeep from!
Lmao
I’ve owned several 5.9s. The precursor to the SRT program. When they’re running right, even stock, a 4wd burnout is available.
As a tyre (yes, tyre) fitter, I've got to say that was a dunce move putting yourself and the other road users at risk with that front rim like that! At 80kph things can go bad pretty quickly with a blow out.
Yes daddy
I'm sure he will put himself in timeout so you don't have to drive South and fuss at him in person
I have used Amsoil transaction fluid to repair a 4L60E. I've stopped lifter noise with Amsoil premium engine oil.
20 years of bringing cars back to life with Amsoil lubricants.
Mercury Villager. Plenty memories in that bad boy
The best automotive channels are informative as well as being entertaining... Alex has got it going on! Great videos with the Jeep... Thanks for posting!
Can’t wait for the detail 🧼🧼🧼
Alex is on a roll. Knocking these videos out every few days. Also really enjoying these mechanics hacks, very useful.
Love the MacGyver style fuel rail/injector cleaning tool.

I’ve just come home from a bike ride to find LSC and Ronald Finger have just posted new videos.
XHamster will just have to wait a little longer.....
Hahaha ha!
71 Buick Electra 225, land yacht. Jeep alignment, measuring tape and broom handles, solid front axles are the best. 🙂
I choked on my water when he said " it doesn't smell bad just...natural." 🤣🤣
As he found out on his 'maiden voyage'
Don't hesitate to tighten the steering box to factory specifications--you're already accustomed to driving cars with tight steering. Years ago, when I had a Chrysler Fifth Avenue, the shop I used was very hesitant to tighten the steering because it might "dart" so I had to do it myself. There was, of course, no problem at all.
That factory tophat intake looks mighty restrictive
As my shop partner would say "Dilution is the solution" (Gas bruh). What I like is the fact that thing holds the winter roads like a cats paw. Many beaters in the family but I remember the 118 mph Wood panel Oldsmobile Cutlass Wagon I just don't remember the year (yea did that on I95 on a dare). That and my pa's 66 Falcon I6 that was driven to the junkyard after being driven to the ends of the earth and back.
Awesome video man. Find the previous owner and do a reaction video! 😎🙏
Love u man 🇱🇧❤
I drove one of those for some time, by our European standards its a fairly fast car. And the noise is great
Hi can you please change the name to “one of the previous fastest SUVs “ not the fastest SUV
Alex using Seafoam to Clean the injectors did Great, i Think The #1 Reward this Jeep can Benefit from is A Engine Detail !!!
My buddy and I have just resorted a 1998 Grand Cherokee that sat with a window open for 2 years. We redid the head liner, found a full interior at LKQ and only needs some rust work now. We live in Naperville. It's the same color as your grand cherokee too!
I watch a ton of automotive channels and this one is quickly becoming my favorite!
you can also backflush the injector with the same method, just a bigger hose, if you suspect large bits of dirt have got caught in the screen
Love Amsoil. Mechanic in California here. Checkout BG 44k fuel cleaner. Best cleaner in the market! Goes in fuel tank. Super strong!
