Thanks Robbie Well explained I switched to a running sinker rig many years ago and I reckon I caught more fish But In very fast water I reckon the paternoster rig is best: caught most of my bigger cod have been caught on Paternoster rig -- about 6 years ago fished the Murray at Mathoura a few carp on Running sinker rig we switched to a Paternoster rig and we caught 20 legal Murray Cod in 300 meter stretch of river in 4 hours Will never forget that day
Thanks Peter. Sounds like an awesome fishing trip mate. They're both effective, but I would imagine that strong current would keep the bait off the bottom and exposed in the open, easy for the fish to see.
@@robbiefishing Thanks Robbie for your reply I should have added the current there is usually very strong because the river is narrow compared to the lower reaches. Both rigs have their purpose as you have well explained may be you should have been a school teacher Well done
Good day rob.. Nice and informative, and each rig has its merits, But I was always told keep it simple and your problems will be simple lol..for our spices I favour the running lead... but if livebait fishing the paternoster comes into it's own... But mate great presentation . Hope your all well and and in good form.... 😎🇬🇧
I'm in Germany now and always fish for Perch (Redfin) with the Paternoster rig, 1 or 2 hooks depending how snaggy it is, but everyone I know or see here usually uses running lead rigs. I grew up in Adelaide and the Paternoster has just been my go to forever - old habits ay. I often fish my second rod actively with a thin drop-shot sinker and lighter hook leader in case of a snags - Drop-shotting with worms often helps to find the fish fast. Thanks for sharing all of your videos Robbie
Thanks for this video! Very well explained and very informative. It has shown me how simple both rigs are and how over complicated I’ve been making things with swivels etc. Keep up the good work Robbie and thanks again. 👍🏻
Hi robbie, what is the best strategy for a huge lake like lake bullen merri and lake purrumbete. I'm going up there on the weekend for my birthday and I would like to know what to use. Thanks, and keep up the good work.
Hey mate, I have never been to either of those lakes sorry. I hope you can get some help from the info in this video. I don't know how many weeds are in Bullen Merri or Purumbete, or how steep the sides are.
it has to be said the paternoster can be really good in the salt especially when you have alot of crabs around that can steal or even bury your bait with a running sinker, it is really frustrating when you lose a live baitfish to a mudcrab. Both are good and they are my go to rigs and it is totally upto the conditions of your particular fishing spot as to which is best.
I was watching the last "From the Vault" video and thinking "I wonder if Robbie has ever made a video on why he uses a Running Sinker and Paternoster rig." A couple of days later and I am wondering whether you read my mind 😀Great explanation! I'll be re-thinking my next rig choice with better knowledge now! Thank you Robbie!
A Robbie Master Class😀 Sometimes we hear things for the first time and sometimes we need to be reminded of the simple things. Either way it’s always good to hear. Great class Sir Thanks for sharing Love your work
Great video Robbie, especially for newer anglers. These are the two basic rigs I use 99% of the time, nice thing is both work well in running or still water.
I really should use the paternoster rig more often but I'm usually too lazy to change my rig haha. Great vid mate, very informative and well presented.
I normally use the running sinker rig me and a few mates caught 8 perch using it but the good thing about the paternoster is it keeps it of the bottom which is good for preventing sunken snags that are sitting on the bottom
@@robbiefishing I have never lost a fish since I have been doing this the fish drags the sinker into the snags break off the 6_8lb line haul in fish hope this helps. Cheers Steve from Seymour. ps. share this with Rowan. Or not.
I use Circle hooks and King kahle hooks when I’m bait fishing, king kahle hooks are good for the fact you can still strike but they also 9 times outa 10 will hook the fish in the mouth, and Circle hooks are good if you’re not paying much attention, and they from my experience have always hooked the fish in the mouth, I like both hooks and I reckon that more people should try them because they’re excellent hooks
@@robbiefishing one thing you gotta remember to do when you bait up circle hooks is to always leave space between the point and the shank of the hook, that way the hook doesn’t just glance off any flat edges in the fish’s mouth
Hey Robbie loving your content,I just have a quick question, I run a different rig and want your thoughts, I don’t know what it’s called though. It’s like a paternoster but there’s another hook tied under the sinker and the sinker runs freely to the top hook do you think I should swap to a double paternoster instead I also fish dams mainly, cheers
Hi mate, sounds like a great rig. It's totally up to you. If it's working then I see ne reason to change, but if it's not working changing might be a good idea.
@@robbiefishing Put a small ring or swivel (rings work better) on the main line, free to run along the line. Tie a leader to this with the sinker on it. Tie another small ring to the end of the mainline to tie the leader to the main line. This also acts as the stopper for the running ring. When you pull the rings together, you want the sinker length longer than the hook length. This acts like the paternoster but allows the line to run when you get the strike. Very good for weedy areas with shy fish. Another one I like is to use a dropshot weight with the swivel on the sinker and just run it free on the mainline above a ring to leader. Great to hold a bait on sand flats.
I love the running sinker rig, keep the set up simple stupid so your line is in the water more often, no point spending all day fiddling with tackle and setting up your line
Great stuff Robbie can’t wait for trout opening
I'm fishing the minute it opens lol
Thanks mate, I'm really looking forward to trout fishing again.

Thanks so much mate. I agree wholeheartedly. It definitely caries from place to place and species to species.

Spring is here and I'm excited. Haha
Thanks Robbie - appreciate your effort to provide these videos.
Thanks so much Peter.
Thanks for video. I liked a running line. It's better using a stick.a small sinker can cut your line.take care and God bless.
Thanks Becky. I too prefer a small stick. God bless you too my friend.
Thanks for the advice Robbie really helped
Thanks so much mate.
There's also a variation where a feeder cage is attached to the sinker
That was brilliant, thanks heaps. I'll definitely be trying the paternoster rig.
Next I'll need to learn the loop knot
Thanks so much for your kind words Mick. 👍
Bravo bro....
Paternoster for me less chance of snagging up imo
Great video Robbie, especially for newer anglers. These are the two basic rigs I use 99% of the time, nice thing is both work well in running or still water.
Thanks Larry, I'm the same apart from the odd float rig these are about all I use for this type of fishing
Very informative. I've only used running sinker rigs before. Might give the paternoster a go on one rod. Cheers mate 👍🐕🤠
Thanks Mick. They definitely both have their pros and cons.
I really should use the paternoster rig more often but I'm usually too lazy to change my rig haha. Great vid mate, very informative and well presented.
Thanks mate. I usually just run with whatever rig is still on there from the last fishing trip. Haha If I feel the need to change I will.

For cod try payernosta ,swivel with light line to the sinker. When you get a fish on the sinker can snag. Break it off and still land the fish.
What a great idea. Thanks mate.

I'm a fence sitter. Either one is great, as you said, it depends on the situation. Next up, what about a float setup?
Thanks mate, I agree. That's a good idea. I have quite a few float fishing videos but have never really talked a lot about float rigs.
Very informative, good video! I always use paternoster or double paternoster in the river because of the current 🙂
Thanks mate. Sounds like a great choice.
Glad you cleared that one up. Well explained.
Thanks so much Vincent.

Hey Robbie are you going to do a streams condition update for the Victorian open season like you did in previous years?
Hi mate, I was hoping to but sadly I haven't even had time to go and look at the streams this season..😓
hi robbie what about using a bobber? when should i use them instead of sinkers and for which species? thanks!
Hi Stephanie, do you mean a bobber as in a float? I love float dishing and use them when I want my bait suspended off the bottom.
