- It's taken us until episode 48 but we finally have Miles from The Wonder Stuff on! We have a lovely chat about all thiungs 'Stuffies' as well as his hatred of Nirvana amongst other things! We knew he would be a great guest and he doesn't disappoint!
Welcome to The Stupid And Contagious podcast, a podcast focused on bringing you interviews with the bands that defined a generation!
That generation grew up in the 90s with the Grebo bands (Senseless Things, PWEI, Neds Atomic Dustbin, Mega City Four, The Wonderstuff and many more) on the UK side of the pond and quickly joined by the grunge bands (Nirvana, Mudhoney, Alice In Chains, Soundgarden and many more) on the US side of the pond.
We are not limiting ourselves to these genres though, we will chart the guitar bands from all genres throughout the decade that was the 1990s.
If you are into 1990s guitar music or just a music lover in general then this is the podcast for you!

Be sure to COMMENT BELOW your favourite Wonder Stuff tracks / memories!
Milo never disappoints. You have to appreciate that 1991 pre-Nevermind, the Stuffies were fucking MASSIVE. One of the best gigs I’ve been to was on the Hup! tour a Leicester with the Sandkings and Ned’s.
He's great right?
Same. And yes, though I was a big fan from 88, they were massive in 90 and 91. Selling out massive venues for several years.
@@Berger090640 Huge band for sure & still pulling a big crowd!
Yeah I saw the same lineup on that tour at Brixton Academy - was excellent
Couldn’t wait to watch this! Wonder stuff started my musical journey. Proud it was my first gig in Poole for the construction tour. Couple of years ago I saw miles solo at shiine. I was lucky to have a chat with him afterwards. I had seen him outside and he was a gent. I however reverted to a starstruck 14 year old! Great interview thanks so much!!
We were a bit starstruck too tbh, we usually are! Thans for watching dude!
What a fantastic interview Miles was great interesting, honest open and relaxed. Refreshing to see my opinion of grunge voiced on the podcast made my day.
He was great right? And I agree, it's always good to get othet takes on scenes, bands, we encourage it! Don't be a sheep people 🤟🏻
Yes, it makes a nice change to hear from people who weren’t part of the cult of Kurt.
‘Construction For The Modern Idiot’ was one of the albums that formed the soundtrack to my youth. My brother had it on cassette. ‘On The Ropes’ is still one of my favourite songs.
Violins or fiddles can be blamed if you like on New Model Army's Thunder and Consolation album. The excellent Ed Alleyne Johnson was the violinist. A wonderful man who plays in his hometown of Chester quite regularly as a busker. Huge NMA fan here btw.
Loved Miles's comments on Faith No More and Janes Addiction.
Great material guys. New subscriber right here.
He still busks? Welcome aboard friend! 🤘🏻
Great interview, and really cool podcast format. Keep it up!
Very kind, thanks so much for watching
Great interview really enjoyed it
Glad ypou enjoyed it, thanks for watching!
That was great..I’d forgotten about The Wonder Stuff. One of those that goes under the radar.
We used to watch the Channel 4 chart show and it would show the indie chart and that’s where I discovered them.
Miles always did a really good version of The Jams “That’s Entertainment “ and good to see him on here, looking well and smoking .
There was another quintessential British band around the same time called “Boys Wonder” ( check out the track “Goodbye Jimmy Dean”. ) long time ago..
I would like to see ya catch up with “The 60ft Dolls “ band we used to go and see in the midd 90s. The best times..
Funny how you doing these interviews breaks into the memory bank.
Excellent stuff.
60ft Dolls is on the list! We all love a bit of 90s nostalgia 🤘🏻
"If only they wrote more songs like Size of a Cow". Oh Dave...what a thing to say. 😝
Dave and his 'one liners'
Another class interview guys. Miles on top form and fantastically open to telling the wonderstuff story.. awesome as always 👏
We love Miles, what a gent!
Was really looking forward to this episode and it didn't dissapoint, Awesome interview and very interesting, I think Miles has grown older gracefully these days, to me their best work is still the first two albums. Last time I saw Miles was the Love from Stourbridge part two gig in 2019 when he opened up the preceedings for Poppies and Ned's with a solo accoustic set of Stuffies classics and it was amazing to be fair....Well done guys again! keep up the good work!
He’s a legend for sure much like yourself! 🤘🏻
Ace interview so nice to hear his views, great to hear him talk about the "Grebo" scence,it really was a close knit thing, where every band were proud of the ground "their" bands were making, really enjoyed this interview guys, thumbs up!!!
Thanks for watching! Glad you enjoyed it
went from a metal head to an indie over night after listening to' Hup'
N.M.E. once said about the Levellers "They take the folky bits from the Wonder Stuff that should be shit but aren't and make them shit again" no wonder the levellers hated the music press. great interview.
The Wonder Stuff brought made many a boy & girl an indie kid! I do love The Levellers too though! 🤘🏻
Love Eight Legged and Hup, and also like the Cow song.
Great interview.
The cow song! 😂 Thanks so much for tuning in, glad you enjoyed it!
The difference with the t-shirt thing was they existed before but they weren't the massive fashion statement they became. It's true that punks wore t-shirts, but they also wore button shirts, DIY zip, shirts with ties and all that stuff too. People also did wear Smiths shirts but many smiths fans were more into emulating the clothes that Morrisey would wear. The difference with the t-shirt bands is that they wore each others shirts, the bands themselves made wearing band shirts popular. The fans dressed like the bands, which made the demand for the shirts a lot larger, ..... Beatles fans wore suits, like the Beatles.... that's why didn't sell hundreds of shirts at gigs, it wasn't the fashion.
That just put a funny image in my head of The Beatles on stage.... George wearing a long sleeve Kinks shirt, Ringo bashing away with his Who t-shirt on. 😂
It's also not that long ago that t-shirts were still regarded as underwear or extremely scruffy .... My Dad is only 22 years older than me and he never went out of the house without a collared shirt on, he grew up in the 60's and unless you were a biker or a pretty rebellious type of some kind.. you wore a 'proper' shirt.
That's a good explanantion. The 'T Shirt bnads' made it part of their identity, like you say wearing other bands Ts
🤟🏻
Also true, we've become scruffy bastards!
Band t-shirts were huge in rock punk and hair metal etc in the 80’s.
Thats the time I think it started too
Morgan’s bass playing is pretty special anyone who steps into Jon Entwistle’s shoes is top tier.
Very true!
I can remember 89,90 going to hmv or virgin records in Leeds and loads of stone roses or depeche mode t shirts on sale and other bands
That was probably the heyday of Ts up untill late 90s?
I saw Nirvana twice and left both times. They were absolutely appalling live so I'll have to agree with Miles. The only gig worse was a pissed up Shane MacGowan and the Popes! I loved the interview, I dig the podcast! See if you can get David Gedge on!
We are working on David Gedge! Another vote for Nirvana being crap live, that’s interesting? I never got the chance to see them live unfortunately but always assumed they killed it live?
I never really liked the Wonder stuff much, I think it must be that Waterboys influence that Miles mentions several times. 😂 Never saw them live. Groove Machine was OK but it's all a bit 'meh' to me. Acoustic guitar and violins was not my bag at the time, so they lost me quite early on.
That’s fair enough, to each their own! The beauty of music 🤘🏻
Milo is correct, i was at Reading 92 and Nirvana were definitely the worst of the three headliners.
Nooo! Shattering my teenage years!
@stupidandcontagiouspodcast they weren't bad, it's just that The Stuffies and Public Enemy were incredible.
Someone's butthurt that something better came along and did for his career, lol. WS were crap and deserved being thrown into the (Ned's Atomic) dustbin of musical history.
Bit harsh? I like the dustbin joke though, my sort of humour
@@stupidandcontagiouspodcast What he said about "grunge" was harsh. But his motivations are clear, so...
@@RunOfTheHind True, It's all subjective. I loved grunge and still do, it'd be boring if we all liked the same thing
