EDIT: holy shit, this is long so read this if you want an analysis lol I initially agreed with you and thought this music video did not correlate with the song but after inspecting the lyrics, the music video actually does makes sense and covers the lyrics pretty well. I think one of the things that I was mostly confused about in the music video was like what you said, she was not really doing anything to attract attention, although she does attract his attention and seems like she was trying to by staring at him. I mostly thought when he said “you just want attention” it means attention from everybody else because of the fact that she’s dating him and I still think that’s what he meant, and I think that because of the lyric that is “You've been runnin' 'round, runnin' 'round, runnin' 'round throwin' that dirt all on my name.” 'Cause you knew that I, knew that I, knew that I'd call you up.” She wants attention from everybody else by saying bad things about him but also wants attention from him because she knew that by doing that, he’d call her up and I interpret it as that’s the only way she’ll get his attention after I assume that he found out and knows that she’s the one that’s been creating these rumours. And I don’t know if this clever songwriting or I’m just delusional, but he also says “knew that I, knew that I’d call you up” and the I is like the beginning for the next sentence? I feel like that can be very overlooked because of the comma. He basically knows her tactic now but he also knows that he’ll call her up anyway even though he knows that is all that she wants. He calls her because he’s mad (even though he knew her tactic by now) and I think she gets satisfaction from him being mad and also just maybe wants to hear his voice and have a chance to talk to him (or manipulates him to let her back into his life). I don’t think you’re supposed to look at the party scene and remember/connect it with that lyric unless you look at it from this perspective, that she wanted attention from him while not really liking him romantically. And I figure that because he said “you don’t want my heart” “you’re just making sure I’m never getting over you” “maybe you just hate the thought of me with someone new”. Even though she doesn’t want him as a partner, she likes the attention that he gives her and is just using him and he knows that but can’t get over her I suppose?
